As part of Billy’s Eagle Scout Project, he designed and crafted a new toy chest for the shelter to store dog toys. The large chest can hold ten times the amount of toys than the small plastic one the shelter was previously using. Thanks to Billy!

On May 19th, Suffolk County Executive Steve Bellone, Commissioner Ed Webber, Chief James Burke and several county legislators congratulated 54 graduates of the Suffolk County Police Academy at commencement exercises Monday at St. Joseph’s College in Patchogue. “You have chosen to invest your life in the career of public service as a Suffolk County Police Officer. You have decided to ensure public safety and put your life on the line for the greater good of Suffolk County. For that I applaud you and say thank you,” County Executive Steve Bellone said. Of the 54 graduates, 37 are joining the Suffolk County Police Department, while two others are joining the Suffolk County Sheriff’s Office. The remainder are joining village or other police units or agencies from around Long Island and New York City. “You are the best trained and best equipped police officers that the Suffolk County Police Academy has ever graduated,” Police Commissioner Edward Webber said. “With this training and authority that you have been given as police officers, comes a great responsibility. You are now responsible for protecting the lives, property and rights of the people that you serve. Your job is to ensure your community is a safe place to live, work and raise a family.“ Recruits in the academy’s 162nd recruit class receive instruction and hands-on training in criminal and civil law, physical fitness, firearms, arrest procedures and other requirements. Every Woman Matters Nearly 5,000 walkers descended on Jones Beach on Sunday for the fifth annual Every Woman Matters Walk: A Walk For Women and Their Families hosted by the North Shore-LIJ Health System and the Commerce and Industry Council. The walk benefits the Katz Institute for Women’s Health and Katz Women’s Hospitals,

specialty hospitals and programmatic initiatives that are transforming women’s healthcare. Alexa Tiven and her sister, Nicole Mancini, were among the participants. They were walking in memory of their mother, Dianne Tiven, who lost her battle with cancer. “This event is very important to us as sisters,

as aunts, as moms. Every woman matters!” said Alexa Tiven. Dr. Jennifer Mieres, senior vice president for the health system’s Office of Community and Public Health, addressed the crowd before the walk. “Women are the CEOs of their families and yet often times, they go without taking care of

themselves,” she told the crowd. “We need to educate ourselves about the differences in women’s health and understand that we are not the same as men, which is why the Katz Institute and Katz Women’s Hospitals are such vital assets to have in our community.” Superstorm Sandy compromised last year’s

event with the closing of the Jones Beach boardwalk, so this year’s walk was not only highly anticipated but celebrated. Walkers had an opportunity to visit the health and wellness showcase tent, enjoy entertainment provided by K98.3, grab a few snacks from the food and beverage tent and snap a few photos at the “flex

station” at the end of our 5K Walk. Since the inception of the 5K Walk in 2010, close to $2 million has been raised for the Katz Institute and Katz Women’s Hospitals. Fundraising will continue through June 6th online at the Walk’s website: www. EveryWomanMattersWalk. com.

St. Joseph’s College (SJC) will hold its 24th Annual Golf Classic on Monday, June 9th, at the Plandome Country Club in Plandome. The 2014 honoree is Don Lizak, former athletic director of SJC’s Long Island Campus. All proceeds from this event will support the College’s athletic programs. Since 1994, Don Lizak worked to transform SJC athletics into the highly regarded athletic program that it is today. After becoming an NCAA Division III institution in 1997, SJC won the Skyline Conference Presidents Cup four times and grew from eight varsity sports to 19. During his tenure at the College, Lizak oversaw the opening of the John A. Danzi Athletic Center in 1997 and the 24.8-acre Outdoor Field Complex in 2012. He spent 38 years in athletic administration and coaching with stints at Long Island University, Wagner College, St. John’s University and Queens College, and as a tournament director for the Metropolitan PGA. At the end of 2013, Lizak retired from SJC after 19 years of dedicated service. “Don Lizak has been an extraordinary director of athletics for St. Joseph’s College,” said Nancy Connors, vice president for the Office of Institutional Advancement at SJC. “It is fitting that the entire SJC community honor him at this event, which raises funds for athletics. Budget Results The East Islip School District 2014-2015-14 budget passed on May 20th, with 1,929 yes votes outweighing the 1,025 no votes. A total of 1,577 ballots were cast. In the race for two open trustee positions on East Islip’s five-person Board of Education, voters elected William Carpluk (1,901 votes) over Toni Brauneisen (778 votes) for the open seat held by trustee Kim G. Phillips, who did not run for reelection. They also selected Christopher Zachry (1,294 votes) ahead of Sally Gabriel (785 votes) and Ryan Stanton (557 votes) for the open seat held by trustee Glenn Reed, who also did not run for reelection. By: Jamie Lynn Ryan With the recent passing of Memorial Day, I thought it appropriate to resurrect an old column from 2006, as the sentiment remains the same no matter the year… I am willing to bet that there are many children who were probably raised to think the sole purpose of Memorial Day is strictly to roll out the barbecues, open the pool for the season, head to the beach for the ﬁrst time and check out all those great sales. Pretty sad, when you think about it. Such a holiday is surely not a “happy” occasion in the traditional sense; although,

for most people, all that matters is that it qualiﬁes as a paid day off. And there we are, off and running, blissfully unaware and increasingly unpatriotic as a result. When did this sense of apathy set it? Is it just a manifestation of the more recent generations, or is it representative of our country as a whole? Now, I’m certain there are many to whom this sentiment does not apply. Any veterans, or the family and friends of those who have served, are generally quite appreciative of such a day’s signiﬁcance. I, for one, admit that I had never attended any kind of Memorial Day commemoration prior to this year when my family

decided to take a ride out to Calverton for the cemetery’s annual services. Sure, it was solemn, but you know what? So is the fact that hundreds of thousands of people have lost their lives over the course of the last several centuries in wars at home and abroad. Is it really asking too much to observe a day – a portion of a day, even – to appreciate that sacrifice? So, the next time some overly-commercialized holiday comes along, take a moment to reflect upon the reason why it was made a national holiday in the first place. I doubt it was to give people another excuse to have a barbecue.

This summer, Nassau BOCES Long Island High School for the Arts (LIHSA), Long Island’s top-ranked arts school invites students to learn from the masters in a variety of disciplines. The LIHSA Summer Arts Academy offers young artists (entering grades 6-12 in the fall) a hands-on learning experience with professional artists who will help them to develop their skills. Beginnerthrough

advanced-level classes and workshops are conducted in a custom-designed, airconditioned arts complex that boasts professional dance studios, state-ofthe-art digital media and music/audio production labs, art studios, practice rooms and a fully-equipped professional theatre. Daily courses are available in drama, musical theatre, creative writing, dance, music and visual arts. Students can also choose from master classes

in clowning and stage combat. Attendees work with ensembles, enjoy performances from guest artists and take cultural field trips to museums and Broadway shows. The academy concludes with performances by all students in each arts discipline. This four-week academy runs June 30th-July 25th at the Long Island High School for the Arts in Syosset. Enrollment into the academy requires an individual school district recommendation. Accepted students are placed in classes based on age and level of achievement. The students wanted to know how people survive horrific life events but still maintain dignity, integrity and compassion; and the artistic task for the students was to find the proper medium and method to best respond to this question. They also wanted their artwork to pay tribute to two women who, in the face of extraordinary abominations, managed not only to salvage their existence but to subsequently live full and productive lives in New York. This week has been full of “lasts.” Today was my last Varsity Sports Award Dinner. Tomorrow is my last day of high school. As I write my last article of my high school years, I look back fondly on the memories that I have made and the bonds that I have formed. Even though I’ll be entering college soon, St. John the Baptist will always hold a special place in my heart. There are great people here. Tonight, at my fourth Varsity Sports Award Dinner, I felt like I was part of something bigger than just the Crew Team. I felt as if I was a member of the entire SJB family.

From the athletes to the athletic directors, the bond is strong. As I collected my AllState Award, I couldn’t help but feel nostalgic. It was the fourth, and final, time I would ever stand on that stage and hear my name read by my coaches. It was a bittersweet moment as I won several accolades. From that stage, I could see some of my classmates. They make up the group that has accompanied me in this great journey that culminates in just a few hours. Now, that part of my life is almost over. We are still in training for Nationals, but there will never be a team

that can influence me so greatly. Soon, I’ll be done with high school, and those same classmates will forget my name. The teachers will forget I existed. Only I will remember the wonderful times that I’ve had and the memories I’ve formed. I’ve loved every minute of this crazy ride. Each year, as we watched the seniors lock their lockers for the last time, I have said that I won’t cry when it’s my time. Now, I am welling up from just writing this article. From day one, this place has been my home. I’m going to miss it.

Excellence Scholarship Ten Islip High School seniors were awarded scholarships for academic excellence this year. Anthony Balestra, Theresa Colonna, Austen Couvertier, Maeve Gesualdi, Budie Kadir, Andrew Lithen, Sarah Marin, Gina Panarese, Bryan Ramirez and Emily Rooney have all been

selected for the Academic Excellence Scholarship given by the New York State Education Department. This program provides scholarship assistance to outstanding New York State high school graduates. Each year, 8,000 scholarships are awarded – up to 2,000 scholarships of $1,500

and 6,000 scholarships of $500 to top scholars from registered New York State high schools. Awards are based on student grades in certain Regents exams. In order to redeem the funds, the students must attend a New York State college in the fall.

In celebration of another year of devoted fundraising for the benefit of East Islip School District students, the For the Kids Foundation held its 17th Annual Black Tie Gala at Villa Lombardi’s in Holbrook on March 15th. FTK has been recognized as the most successful nonprofit school organization in Suffolk County and has donated more than $1 million for East Islip’s scholastic programs since its formation. Themed “Emerald Elegance,” this year’s event recognized three renowned community champions and FTK supporters. Stony Brook Match Eighteen high school seniors from underserved communities on Long Island who completed Stony Brook’s Health Occupations Partnership for Excellence (HOPE) Program are on their way to college. Under the mentorship of Stony Brook University faculty, the two-year program fosters the academic development of 11th and 12th graders and preps them for future careers in the health industry. Five students will be attending Stony Brook University with their eyes wide opened to the burgeoning field of healthcare. Since its inception in 2005, the HOPE program has helped open new avenues for 126 promising high school students from underserved and racially and ethnically diverse communities. During the 2013-2014 academic year, more than 30 Stony Brook faculty and community members have instructed students, with educational venues that included lectures, hands-on demonstrations and shadowing professionals from multiple areas in medicine such as cardiothoracic care, surgery, and neurology; as well as in nursing, midwifery and respiratory care. “I could not believe how much I got out of the HOPE program, and I learned that healthcare is a great opportunity to not only help people but pursue many fields,” said Sierra Gardner, a senior from Wyandanch Memorial High School. “We learned there is way more to healthcare than just doctors and nurses,” added Gardner. Gardner became fascinated with the impact of technology on healthcare. Intrigued with biomedical

engineering, she applied to several undergraduate programs. Accepted to Stony Brook, she will major in biomedical engineering when she starts this fall. Like many of the HOPE “graduates,” Christine McIsaac, a senior from Longwood High School, who will major in either biology or psychology at Stony Brook, felt that her career interests by participating in HOPE, and that choosing a field in healthcare is certainly a leading possibility.

“Respiratory care is so interesting, and helps all kinds of patients. We also saw how much work goes into patient care at Stony Brook’s dental school and veterans’ home during our tours there. All of this has made me very interested in healthcare,” said McIsaac. Three other HOPE graduates who selected Stony Brook University will explore fields in scientific research.

Islip Town Clerk Olga Murray recently welcomed future Eagle Scout, Billy Baldwin, and members of Troop 292 of Brentwood, as they delivered a new handmade toy chest to Islip Animal Shelter and Adopt-a-Pet. As part of Billy’s Eagle Scout project, he designed and crafted a new toy chest for the shelter to store dog toys. The large chest can hold ten times the amount of toys than the small plastic one the shelter was previously using. Troop

292 also collected and donated other items, from food and snacks to toys and towels. “Our Town loves to see young people get involved in our community. We are more than thankful for Billy’s efforts, as well as those of Troop 292. It is the small but necessary improvements such as these that help us provide a better environment for the countless animals we shelter in the Town of Islip,” said Town Clerk Murray.

Jessica Rodriguez, of Brentwood High School will major in biochemistry. “Physics is perfect for me,” Yalin. “I am interested in engineering but also considering healthcare, and being at Stony Brook University and near its hospital can only be a plus for me during my college years when I need to decide.” “It is inspiring to see each of these students talk about their experience with HOPE, the confidence they have gained, and their interest in science and healthcare,” said Judith Berhannan, Dean of Undergraduate Admissions at Stony Brook. “On top of all of that, some have chosen to come to Stony Brook to pursue their dreams.” “The HOPE program is an example of Stony Brook’s commitment to the community and to reduce healthcare disparities,” said Yvonne Spreckels, Director of Community Relations at Stony Brook University Hospital. “We are excited that some of these talented young people have decided to pursue careers in healthcare and look forward to the day when they will serve their communities as healthcare professionals.” Some of the other colleges these HOPE graduates will attend include Hofstra University, Suffolk County Community College, SUNY Geneseo, SUNY Binghampton, Sacred Heart University and Clemson University.

Annual Art Show

The annual Ruth C. Kinney Elementary School art show on May 7th, curated by art teacher Dana Belfiore, featured artwork from grades K-5, with each student represented by at least one piece. The exhibit included projects that showcased various techniques in clay, painting, collage, drawing, wax resist and pastel, as well as concepts related to

literature, history, famous artists, and environmental and social issues. Visitors were treated to music from small band and orchestra ensembles led by music teachers Lynda Maniscalco and Angela Stewart. Former RCK student Jenna Norrby held a bake sale during the art show which raised $376 to support leukemia

Timber Point Elementary School held an art show on May 7th, curated by teacher Christina Spera-Bartlett. Featuring pieces from every student in Timber Point’s K-5 art classes, the exhibit showcased both a range of art materials, including colored pencil, clay and watercolor paint, and a range of techniques such as sculpture, grid enlargement, selfportraiture and still-life.

Fifth-grade art demonstrators Joshua Banville and Haley Sheehan displayed their knowledge of grid enlargement, while the East Islip Music and Arts Program Support organization auctioned a fifth-grade collaborative collage depicting musical instruments. To the delight of the many attendees, musical performers accompanied the show, including

The National Circus Project (NCP) is an educational program that teaches children, through circus acts, many life skills, such as cooperation, perseverance, selfmotivation, and teamwork. Students rehearse their very own circus acts, recently such as stilts, juggling, and diablo sticks, among

others, and work with their peers in order to put together their very own circus performance! St. Patrick students practiced with artists from NCP during the school week and put on their performance Friday, May 9th!
