Great Expectations By: Jamie Lynn Ryan “Spring is the time of year when it is summer in the sun and winter in the shade.” ~ Charles Dickens, Great Expectations While the calendar may technically still say spring for almost another month, the approach of Memorial Day weekend signals summer on the horizon. As thousands of Long Islanders head to the beach to enjoy the sun, surf and sand, we reflect on the first five months of the year… how has your 2016 been so far? Is it headed in the right direction? Are there still goals left to attain? What

does the remainder of the year hold in store? Of course, we can only predict so much, direct our fate to a degree; but, with that, our actions – or inaction, as the case may be – are what set the precedence for how our days will unfold. A little positive momentum goes a long way in determining the course of weeks, months, even entire years. One small step in the right direction is all it takes to turn things around. And with that, spring is the perfect time to look forward, that season of rebirth and growth, of blossoming flowers and greening grass, of eggs hatching and bunnies

frolicking, of pools opening and bathing suits and flip flops seeing the light of day. Speaking of, those late afternoons and early evenings of golden sunlight do wonders for the psyche – how nice to leave work and still have that sunset glow to drive home by. And so we turn the page on May, look ahead to June and all that summer beckons. We dust off the remnants of the past, and gaze forward into the great unknown, full of anticipation and promise and excitement in the hope that tomorrow will be a better day. Here’s to 2016 and molding it into something memorable!

I spot a pair of robins flitting from branch to branch on a newly blossoming tree. Esteemed Elders East Islip High School students in the high school’s Culinary Arts and Hospitality Career Academy hosted their second annual Esteemed Elders event at the Early Childhood Center on April 13th for the benefit of the senior citizens of the community. More than 125 senior citizens – including Board of Education President Philip Montuori Sr. – attended the event, dining on a home-cooked feast prepared by the students of the Culinary Academy, who served appetizers and a buffet style dinner under

This year’s Esteemed Elders event included a new cook-off competition between 10 different groups, each comprised of one Culinary Academy student, one high school student and one adult parent, teacher or community member. The students were provided a recipe and a group of food items to use. Each group was also given two mystery items that they would need to incorporate in their meal. The elders in attendance were able to watch the teams prepare

and complete their meals, and then were given a chance to walk around and decide which teams did the best job. Four judges were on hand to select the three winning teams at the completion of the event. “As shown in the students’ performance for the Esteemed Elders dinner, the Culinary Career Academy provides them with the necessary skills required to successfully take the ProStart certification exam and work in a food establishment,” said Israel Malinowitzer, Career Academy director.

Terrific Artists In recognition of their remarkable talent and creativity in the artistic fields of video, photography and electronic illustration, 10 East Islip High School students were named “Best in Show” at the 2016 Long Island Media Arts Show, held at Five Towns College’s Performing Arts Center in Dix Hills on April 1st. Kristianna Schlosser earned three Best in Show awards for photography. Other East Islip Best

in Show winners from Heather Toomey’s photography class were Defne Duyku, Delanie Fitzgerald, Rebecca Kreamer and Destiny Nalls. “Attending the Media Arts Show was a great experience because we gained a lot of insight from discussing our work with professional photographers,” said Kreamer, a junior. Best in Show graphics winners from Erin Jacob’s electronic illustration

class were Zoe Stengel, Arthur Tuck and Veronica VanDerlofske. Best in Show film winners from James Connell’s video production classes were writers and directors Ashley Karlin and Steve Murello. Karlin won for “Be Good for Goodness Sake,” while Murello earned his prize for “Where’s Eddie,” a film inspired by the 1990s cult crime movies.

Virtual Enterprise Islip High School Business Academy students in the Virtual Enterprise International program competed at VEI’s annual Youth Business Summit trade show at New York City’s 69th Regiment Armory on April 19th. The trade show allows students from around the world to participate in the

global VE network, exhibit a wide range of products and tout their marketing campaigns. Islip’s team, Tranquell Beverages, who had won first place for Best Sales Pitch at VEI’s Long Island Regional Trade Show in January, was one of 165 student firms at the trade show to race against time to sell goods and

services to other firms. “The firm did an outstanding job marketing and selling their product,” said business teacher Joe Modica. “This was a great student-centered experience which prepared them for potential future careers in the business world.”

The local marine environment is cleaner and therefore healthier thanks to a recent cleanup of the shoreline along Havemeyer, Sexton and Captree Islands by volunteers from the Islip Town Leaseholders

Association. ITLA members often have ties to the area for several generations and participate in this cleanup of public shoreline as part of their year-round environmental stewardship of the islands.

The group worked from both land and boat to fill 40 large contractor bags with litter. Large debris was discarded in a dumpster provided by the New York State Parks Department, which has jurisdiction over the islands.
