Memorial Day weekend is upon us and, just like that, the unofficial start to summer beckons. Swimsuits will be unearthed from the back of closets, beach passes affixed to car windows, and bags packed with sunscreen and towels as the great majority of Long Islanders head to one of our local beaches to celebrate the season. For the last seven or so years, I have been attending the Jones Beach Air Show, taking in the breathtaking aerodynamics of the U.S. Navy Blue Angels and the U.S. Air Force Thunderbirds on alternate years. It doesn’t matter how many shows – and pre-show arrivals – I have witnessed; it just never gets old. There is something incredible about witnessing these planes in flight, soaring against the sky in perfect formation.
Of course, Memorial Day weekend is only the beginning, and the hope is that there will be plenty more beautiful beach weekends to enjoy throughout the next several months, although, doesn’t it seem as though the nicest days are reserved for those spent inside the office staring at a computer screen? There is just no predicting Mother Nature, so best to take advantage of whatever rays of sunshine you can as soon as they begin to peek through. Speaking of unpredictable weather, I currently have tickets to about seven or eight concerts at the Jones Beach Theatre this year; fingers crossed that at least a few will be enjoyed under a clear summer sky, sans torrential downpour, lightning storm or any other inclement conditions. While none of my shows have ever been cancelled, there have

been several that pushed the boundaries. Just last summer, in fact, I found myself pondering just how “waterproof,” in fact, my phone was, and whether it was advisable to continue videoing the performance in front of me as sheets of rain streamed down around me. {The answers, in case you were wondering, were: A) not quite as waterproof as expected, and B) not so advisable.} So, enjoy your weekend, whatever it is you choose to do to usher in the summer season. Although the calendar indicates there’s still one month to go, the collective mindset seems to say there’s no need to wait. So slather on that sunscreen, grab your beach bag and dig your toes into the sand as the ocean caresses your feet. Just keep an eye on the sky for any storm clouds approaching.

Honoring a Legacy Suffolk County Executive Steve Bellone recently attended the dedication of the brand new Suffolk County Fire Rescue and Emergency Services (FRES) Mobile Command Unit in honor of Warren A. Horst. Warren was a long time employee of the Suffolk County Department of FRES spending nearly 15 years as Chief County Fire Marshal. He was also an active member of the West Sayville Fire Department for over 47 years. This new FRES Mobile Command Unit will provide mobile information and technology for infrastructure as base camp operations during emergency and nonemergency events. It is also outfitted with stateof-the-art communication equipment enhancing the Suffolk County FRES’s team and their partners’ ability to communicate when responding and coordinating with law enforcement and fire suppression personnel.
Budget Results The Islip School District’s 2017-2018 budget passed on May 16th, with residents casting 988 yes votes to 372 no votes. For the Board of Education, incumbent trustee Philip Dineen, running unopposed, was reelected, winning 952 votes. In the race for the trustee seat of incumbent David Twomey, challenger Kelly Vallette was the victor, earning 647 votes to Twomey’s 565.

It has been many years since it has become nationally realized that physical activity is an important aspect of overall good health, not only for adults but for children as well. To that end, the Physical Education Teachers at Mary G. Clarkson School – Mrs. Ochwat, Mrs. Pasquerella and Mrs. Arias – strive to contribute to good health and well-being practices by hosting their annual MGC “SPORTS NIGHT”
activity. Staff, students and parents of Mary G. Clarkson were integrated into the challenging feats of physical ability and endurance. This year saw a considerable increase in the amount of parents participating! Everyone in attendance participated in one form or another. The contestants were divided into teams of Staff vs. Parents vs. Children, and the audience participated by cheering
on the contestants. All of the activities, including Animal in the Bucket, Treasure Island, and Ship to Shore, proved to be highly rousing, gripping and refreshingly invigorating for the participants and particularly entertaining for the audience. Of course all of the teams experienced their share of wins and losses, but it was the teachers who won the day!
Congratulations to the Bay Shore High School Model UN Team! They recently traveled to New York City to take part in an international Model UN competition.
This year, the Bay Shore team was chosen to represent Norway. After a meeting with the Norwegian delegates to the United Nations, the students worked diligently
on the competition tasks. At the end of the competition, they were awarded an Award of Merit, one of only three teams to receive this honor out of the dozens that competed.

Students at South Country School recently “Teamed Up to Put Cancer to Sleep.” For a donation of $1, the students were allowed to wear their favorite pajamas or team jerseys to school. The event, coordinated
by teacher Mrs. Dale, raised $4,645 for the Leukemia Lymphoma Society. Mrs. Boyle’s third grade class raised $409 in their room alone! Fifth grade student ambassadors assisted with the circulation of

One of the core r e q u i r e m e n t s for completing the International Baccalaureate (IB) Diploma Program is the completion of an Extended Essay. Over the course of a year, with the support of a faculty mentor, diploma
candidates choose a topic, conduct independent research and write a college-level paper, which is then submitted to an IB examiner for assessment. Bay Shore High School’s senior IB diploma class recently held a special ceremony during which all candidates submitted their
papers electronically and placed copies in binders that will be kept in the school library as a resource for future IB students. Each student received a commemorative pen in celebration of the achievement.
Special Volunteers East Islip High School’s varsity softball team volunteered for the annual Special Olympics event held at Bellport High School on May 7th. Each team member partnered with an athlete and took him or her to their events
throughout the day. “It was great to have Eric again,” said junior Katie Burk. “We missed him last year and I’m happy we had the chance to reunite with him.” Sophomore Allison Dell’Orto bonded with her
athlete and was excited when she took first place in both of her events. “It was great seeing her compete and get that gold medal, I was so proud of her,” Dell’Orto said.

Islip Town Supervisor Angie Carpenter recently joined local school superintendents and Islip Public Safety officials to discuss the rise of gang activity nationwide, and how it affects all hamlets and school districts across Long Island. The Public Safety Department made a
presentation to those assembled, and highlighted the recruitment strategies of local gangs. Afterward, a discussion was held to identify ways that school districts can take steps to reduce and prevent gang influence among student populations. “Recent events demand a full response from all those
in a position to make a difference,” said Supervisor Angie Carpenter. “I hope today’s presentation and discussion lead to tangible solutions that can help those who are threatened by gang activity. School officials can be the ‘eyes and ears’ for law enforcement who are working to combat gang recruitment efforts.”

Honored for Volunteerism East Islip Middle School seventh-grader Johnathan Yankus was recently honored for exemplary volunteer service with a Certificate of Excellence and President’s Volunteer Service Award by the Prudential Spirit of Community Awards. He was recognized for this achievement at the April 20th board of education meeting. Presented annually by Prudential Financial and the National Association of Secondary School
Principals, the Spirit of Community Awards honor young people across America for outstanding volunteer service. The Certificate of Excellence is granted to the top 10 percent of all applicants, while the President’s Volunteer Service Award recognizes Americans of all ages who volunteer significant amounts of time to serving their communities. Yankus volunteers at the Long Island Aquarium in Riverhead, where his
favorite assignment is working in the Butterflies, Bugs & Birds exhibit. “Johnathan encourages the birds to land on him so people can see them close up and the visitors can have the birds walk on them,” said guidance counselor Peter Ludlow. “He also works with the Keep Islip Clean program where he helps to keep the marina and its beach clean. He is sad to report that he has picked up over 300 cigarette butts in a single day.”

Angel Ball Held The Long Island Council on Alcoholism and Drug Dependence (LICADD) celebrated possibility, hope and promise at the 30th annual Angel Ball. Three hundred and twenty-five LICADD supporters and friends came together to note a year of milestones in the addiction and recovery arena. The filled to capacity crowd raised over $310,000 enabling LICADD to continue it’s important and vital work of service, support, prevention education and advocacy. At the height of an opioid crisis on Long Island, this successful event was a positive stride in the fight to support those individuals and their families who struggle with alcohol and drug addiction. The Angel Ball paid a heartfelt tribute to the late Adele C. Smithers. A good friend and advocate for LICADD, she has been dubbed the “godmother” of research, education, prevention and recovery in the field of alcohol abuse and drug dependence. Her guidance, leadership and generosity will remain guiding principles for LICADD, as the agency furthers its 61year mission for years to come. Of Adele Smithers, LICADD Executive Director, Steve Chassman shared, “Amid the sad reality of Adele’s passing, there has been tremendous opportunity and strides
forward. Adele left us a blueprint for what it means to dedicate a life to community service, to lend a voice for those who have none, and to work diligently to confront inequity and injustice.” In tribute to Adele Smithers, the Angel Ball was renamed, The Adele Smithers Angel Ball. The Christopher D. Smithers Foundation, led by Adele’s son, Christopher Smithers, his wife, Nikki and family were on hand to accept the honor. Commissioner Timothy D. Sini of the Suffolk County Police Department was honored as LICADD Community Champion. LICADD applauded Commissioner Sini’s approach to addressing the opioid epidemic. Under his leadership, the Suffolk County Police Department offers rehabilitation rather than incarceration for youthful drug offenders. With Commissioner Sini’s support, LICADD and Suffolk County have partnered to operate a 24-hour substance abuse hotline. This successful program is entering its second year. The evening’s Keynote address was offered by filmmaker and advocate, Greg Williams. His ground-breaking films, The Anonymous People and Generation Found have changed the way addiction and recovery are viewed, discussed and
supported and has started a movement. LICADD was honored to have Mr. Williams share his powerful story. Thank you to all who attended the 30th Angel Ball and to our friends and supporters. We encourage you to become acquainted with all that LICADD offers and see how you can become involved. It takes a village and we appreciate your interest, support and participation. For 61 years, LICADD is Long Island’s premier nonprofit agency providing life-saving alcohol and drug prevention and intervention services to at-risk children, individuals, and families across the region. With offices in Westbury and Holbrook, LICADD conducts screenings, brief interventions, referrals to treatment and relapse prevention services to individuals and families impacted by substance abuse. The agency also conducts evidence-based prevention programs, community outreach initiatives, a mentoring program for children of incarcerated parents, and participates in public policy advocacy. joined a team of women volunteers who were participating in Habitat’s National Women Build Week, which invites women to help make a difference and devote at least one day to help build decent and affordable housing in their local communities. Lowe’s helped launch National
Women Build Week in 2008 to empower women to advocate for affordable housing and spotlight the homeownership challenges faced by many.

With offices in Westbury and Holbrook, LICADD conducts screenings, brief interventions, referrals to treatment and relapse prevention services to individuals and families impacted by substance abuse. The agency also conducts evidence-based prevention programs, community outreach initiatives, a mentoring program for children of incarcerated parents, and participates in public policy advocacy.

Discovering Recovery The Long Island Council on Alcoholism and Drug Dependence (LICADD) celebrated possibility, hope and promise at the 30th Annual Angel Ball. Three hundred and twenty-five LICADD supporters and friends came together to note a year of milestones in the addiction and recovery arena. The filled to capacity crowd, raised over $310,000 enabling LICADD to continue it’s important and vital work of service, support, prevention education and advocacy. At the height of an opioid crisis on Long Island, this successful event was a positive stride in the fight to support those individuals and their
families who struggle with alcohol and drug addiction. The Angel Ball paid a heartfelt tribute to the late Adele C. Smithers. A good friend and advocate for LICADD, she has been dubbed the “godmother” of research, education, prevention and recovery in the field of alcohol abuse and drug dependence. Her guidance, leadership and generosity will remain guiding principles for LICADD, as the agency furthers its 61year mission for years to come. Of Adele Smithers, LICADD Executive Director, Steve Chassman shared, “Amid the sad reality of Adele’s passing, there has been tremendous
opportunity and strides forward. Adele left us a blueprint for what it means to dedicate a life to community service, to lend a voice for those who have none, and to work diligently to confront inequity and injustice.” In tribute to Adele Smithers, the Angel Ball was renamed, The Adele Smithers Angel Ball. The Christopher D. Smithers Foundation, led by Adele’s son, Christopher Smithers, his wife, Nikki and family were on hand to accept the honor. Commissioner Timothy D. Sini of the Suffolk County Police Department was honored as LICADD Community Champion.
LICADD applauded Commissioner Sini’s approach to addressing the opioid epidemic. Under his leadership, the Suffolk County Police Department offers rehabilitation rather than incarceration for youthful drug offenders. With Commissioner Sini’s support, LICADD and Suffolk County have partnered to operate a 24-hour substance abuse hotline. This successful program is entering its second year. The evening’s Keynote address was offered by filmmaker and advocate, Greg Williams. His ground-breaking films, The Anonymous People and Generation Found
