Grant Presented JOIN US FOR OUR ANNUAL

Kat’s Ribbon of Hope presented a grant of $100,000 to the Adelphi Breast Cancer Program for their bilingual patient navigation program for underserved breast cancer patients. The grant will be used to support patients at Nassau University Medical Center (NUMC) and local hospitals through their diagnosis and treatment. The Adelphi Breast Cancer Program’s social workers address disparities in mortality by providing psychosocial support, counseling, patient navigation and concrete services to underserved patients. Additionally, the program facilitates a 9.875 x 5.437 Spanish language support group, Cafecito, in the community for breast cancer patients. “Our partnership with

the Adelphi program supports our goal to provide financial assistance to women who would otherwise not be able to afford early detection and treatment services for breast cancer,” says Katerina Dinas Raptis, a breast cancer survivor who is the cofounder of KROH. Kat, who was diagnosed when she was 32, says that while having breast cancer was “a nightmare,” she was blessed in many ways with the support of her family and excellent medical care. She realized that there were many women who did not have such support and was determined to do what she could to help. She and her husband George Raptis and sister Despina Yarian established Kat’s Ribbon of Hope in 2013. “The staff of Adelphi is

a big part of what we do,” says Despina. “Through their work they define what Kats Ribbon of Hope is all about.” Last year, KROH gave the Adelphi program a grant which allowed them to hire an additional patient navigator. “The generosity of Kat’s Ribbon of Hope is greatly increasing our ability to help underserved women,” says Hillary Rutter, the executive director of the Adelphi Breast Cancer Program. The Adelphi NY Statewide Breast Cancer Hotline & Support Program, established in 1980, offers free emotional support, education and advocacy for breast cancer patients and the community. with Jamie Lynn Ryan This week, I thought I’d throw it back to a classic from the archives, a column which received quite a bit of positive feedback leading up to last year’s Memorial Day. Reﬂecting on past traditions always tends to get the creative juices ﬂowing, so to speak, and memories of family gatherings are no exception… There are many Memorial Day weekend traditions that people enjoy. Most of them tend to involve barbecues and beaches, bathing suits and sunbathing. Few take the time to truly appreciate the meaning of the holiday itself. I’ve written in the past of attending the annual service which takes place at Calverton National Cemetery, a mere two hours of the weekend designated to pay respects to those who have come before us and sacrificed so much for this nation. This brought to mind another, perhaps less traditional, “ceremony” which my grandfather and great uncle

used to enact each Memorial Day, and then again at Labor Day. Both veterans themselves, they had held on to their service uniforms and, ill-fitting as they were, would dig them out and don bits and pieces of them each year to take part in the annual “flag raising” in my grandfather’s backyard. For as long as I can remember, there stood a flagpole at one end of the lush green lawn, and from that pole hung Old Glory, proudly waving in the wind, for the entire summer. My grandfather and uncle would unfurl this flag each May and, with a mix of reverence and humor as they paraded in their snug jackets and trousers, would carefully raise it – and then, salute proudly. Come September, this same succession of events would take place in reverse, and the flag would be carefully stored away for another season. As a child, I can’t say I truly understood what was going on, nor did I appreciate the significance of the ordeal. Sure, there was a bit of tongue-in-

cheek humor to go along with the solemnity; but make no mistake; they took it all very seriously. Thankfully, there are pictures from a few of these ceremonies… along with the memories to last a lifetime. Last summer, as my grandparents’ house stood empty for the first time in 56 years, a “For Sale” sign staked on the front lawn, the family gathered one late spring afternoon to begin the process of going through belongings. The ceremonies of days gone by a distant memory at this point, a somewhat tattered flag still hung from the pole. Inspired, the “children” decided to raise a brand new flag, one last time, in honor of my grandfather, and all the wonderful summers spent in that backyard. As for the old flag, the last one my grandfather had hung, I kept it. And each time I drive by the old house, now filled with a new couple just beginning their lives, I look to see if the old flagpole still stands. It does, and the flag remains.

Career Choices A terrific year of career exploration and mentoring opportunities, developed for the school’s Student Career Connection program by the East Islip School-Business Partnership, has wound down at East Islip High School. The Catch-a-Career Breakfast, the first event in the year-round careers program, was held on Nov. 1 at the Irish Coffee Pub. It provided a crucial forum for students to discuss their career plans with business professionals representing their personal career interest areas. The participants gained insight on current trends, specific skills, and the academic or vocational programs that will help the students prepare for success in their intended career field. A total of 71 students attended, networking with 44 table facilitators representing more than 30 career fields including medical and healthcare, business and finance, law and law enforcement, journalism, media, politics, education, engineering, environmental sciences, and information

technology. East Islip alumna Veronica Pasha, a Class of 2011 graduate and registered nurse at New York-Presbyterian/Weill Cornell Medical Center, served as the keynote speaker. Pasha spoke about her journey into nursing and acknowledged her family and teachers who helped guide her to a rewarding career. “Veronica’s inspirational words echoed the importance of seeking advice from others when pursuing a career,” said teacher and SchoolBusiness Partnership coordinator Paul McHugh. “Student interaction was excellent, and there was a lot of energy in the room.” The next step was the Mentor Me program, now in its 18th year of providing students with hands-on experiences in career fields they wish to pursue after high school. It began with the Meet My Mentor Breakfast on Nov. 29, where the high schoolers made their first contacts with experienced professional mentors, who guided the students into the business world. Participating

mentor organizations and individuals included Bideawee, Country Village Florist and Gifts, attorney Jodi Ann Donato, The Electrical Training Center, architect Joseph Gabriel, Glen Head Country Club, JVC Broadcasting, dentist Raymond Mascolo, Northwell Health, St. Francis Hospital, Signature Bank, the Suffolk County Police Department, Suffolk Transportation, the Town of Islip and Zebra Technologies. Each student then began to exchange emails with their selected mentor and were given the opportunity to “shadow” the mentor for a full day in 2018, enabling them to see what it is like to work in that career field. “This worthwhile program is a must for students, as it opens their eyes to what their future will look like,” said teacher Bridget Lopiccolo, the coordinator of the Mentor Me program. “It is truly remarkable to see the students as they light up and feel the passion of the career that they want to pursue.”

Pal-O-Mine grew from having two programs, eight horses and 80 students per week to 11 programs, 25 horses and 400 students per week - and they continue to grow today! Every day, they have a different school drop off children at their location to benefit from their organization; they also offer group programs, individual lessons, corporate workshops and a program

They ask for one hour a week of your time to visit with an isolated, homebound senior for socialization and companionship (time is flexible). They will match you with a senior based upon your location and interests. Volunteers are also needed for their Ombudservice Program. Volunteers are trained to help seniors living in nursing homes or assisted living facilities understand their rights and help them advocate for themselves. Lastly, volunteers are needed for their Health Insurance Counseling Program. Volunteers inform seniors about Medicare and healthcare options to achieve a higher quality of life. The Islip School District’s 2018-2019 budget passed on May 15th, with residents casting 1,060 yes votes to 355 no votes. The district thanks the community for voting. For the Board of Education, incumbent trustee Tom Leggio, running unopposed, was reelected, winning 1,093 votes. In the race for the trustee seat held by Board President Brian Clock (who did not run for reelection), Eric S. Buehler defeated Matthew Kriss, 913 votes to 374. Running unopposed for the seat of trustee Mary Ann Coughlin (who did not run for reelection), Paul J. Austin was elected, winning 1,085 votes.

Spring’s Caprice

The East Islip School District’s 2018-2019 budget passed on May 15th, with 1,873 yes votes outweighing the 933 no votes. The district thanks the community for their participation and support. East Islip voters also approved the ballot proposition for a capital improvement bond by a total of 1,680 yes votes to 1,116 no votes. For East Islip’s five-person Board of Education, voters reelected two incumbents, Board President Jessica Carney (1,852 votes) and Vice President Philip Montuori Sr. (1,704 votes), both running unopposed.

Taking on Plastic

Eighth-grade life science students at Islip Middle School prepared for Earth Day last month by participating in the school’s annual on-campus cleanup of Orowoc Lake. Equipped with waders, nets and buckets, students braved cool weather and chilly waters as they removed plastic bottles and plastic bags from the lake. “They were amazed by the amount of plastic trash that collected in the very waters that they had grown to love and appreciate this year,” said teacher AnnMarie Mills. “This outdoor activity supported the lessons taught inside the classroom that focused on the harmful effects that these plastics have on our environment, especially plastic bags.”

The Seatuck Environmental Association enlisted the help of the life science students for their ninth annual Eco-Carnival by requesting that the eighth-graders design a “plastic bag garland” that would spur interest and curiosity in the event’s visitors. “Our students were eager to help support the organization and immediately went to work,” said Mills. “They were so enthusiastic that the garland grew to a whopping 400 feet. Fellow students and educators gasped as they walked past room 105 and their response inspired the idea of displaying this seemingly never-ending garland on Main Street for all to see.”

On April 20, the school erected a plastic bag art instillation along the fence that lines Main Street with the hopes of generating awareness of society’s dependence on plastic. Multiple classes had the opportunity to walk through the fluttering bags on the windy day. “The students described the experience as powerful, saddening and amazing,” said Mills. “The honking response of community members as they drove by generated as sense of validation, that this war on single-use plastics is supported by many and once again, the opinions and voices of our generation are being heard.”

Each student in Greg Kguloian’s freshman global history class at East Islip High School was recently given the opportunity to join intellectual forces with three other classmates to do research on a “reach and teach assignment” on one of six classical civilizations: the Persian Empire, ancient Greek city-states, the Mauryan Empire, the Gupta Empire, the Qin Dynasty and the Han Dynasty. The ninth-graders were encouraged to use classroom textbooks,

the internet and other reputable resources to gain information, put it into an interesting format and prepare audiovisual presentations. The groups of four were then asked to teach their “lesson” the way they would want to be taught. A peer-interactive question-and-answer session at the end of each presentation served to not only find out what the students learned, but also to allow the students teaching the lesson to determine how effective their lesson was via

instantaneous feedback. “I was most impressed with how each person in our classroom respectfully paid attention to their fellow students as they gave reports on their given classical civilization, took notes and asked appropriate questions,” said Kguloian. “I am extremely proud of the way they all helped each other to learn more. Our young people today deserve to be given the tools to be better potential leaders tomorrow.”

Moving Forward Although there have been many books and articles written about the power of positive thinking, new findings about its importance in daily living are always surfacing. The old saying, “If life gives you lemons, make lemonade,” still holds true more than ever. We begin this update with a look at how attitudes are formed. To start, a stimulus enters your consciousness and ends with a response. However, in between the stimuli and response is what I like to call “the buffer zone,” where your brain makes a split-second decision whether to act favorably on the stimuli (hence the response will be more favorable), or the reverse will be true. If you are like most people, this type of interaction occurs with high frequency daily. In a broad sense, positive thinking is the carrier which turns negative thoughts into positive ones. Some examples of its many benefits include: giving you a pleasant feeling of high esteem, coupled with a sense of self-fulfillment. This can be enough to really make a person’s day without him/her realizing what caused it!

Further, it can enhance your level of satisfaction and feeling of well-being. In many cases, this effect can automatically be blended with the above paragraph on high esteem and self-fulfillment. By giving well-deserved thanks to others whom you come in contact with, both you and the other person have the potential to feel better. The key here is that it must be based on a factual, pleasant event. It cannot be accomplished with false praise. If this occurs, you will be looking at a person who feels good throughout the day and never gives a thought to the cause. Have you witnessed this in another person? Better yet, has it ever happened to you? Now, let’s bring all of this into the world of everyday living. Wouldn’t it be nice to learn some tips on how to turn a negative into a positive? The Power of Positive Thinking contact with you. Response: If this is happening to you, quickly take several deep breaths, slow down and wave that person to enter his/ her car in front of yours. In most cases, the person will give you a friendly wave and smile - and you will feel good about it too! Situation: You are walking behind an elderly person who is walking at a very slow pace, and the green light is about to turn red. Although she is in the proper crossing lane, she is in danger of being hit by an aggressive driver. Response: Walk rapidly until you are in front of her and gently suggest that you both walk faster to cross safely to the other side. If necessary (and with her permission), gently take her arm and proceed. Special Tip I have used the following method for many years with much success, and I now will pass it on to you. It consists of two simple parts: Part #1: Shortly before you fall asleep, think of all the good things you

could accomplish during the next day. Concentrate for a few moments on each one you have selected. What most people don’t realize is that, while you sleep, your subconscious takes over and “stores it” for the next day! Part #2: Upon waking (and continuing) throughout your early morning routine before breakfast, think of some good things you could do today, and don’t forget to include yourself if appropriate. Now, here’s the really interesting part; in most cases, this list will come easily to you. Do you know why? It’s because your subconscious worked most of the night to develop this for you! May I ask a favor for any of my readers who might be doubtful about this? Please give it a try. It will take a bit of practice to perfect this technique, but keep going. The results you obtain will be well worth the effort. Now, you are ready to move forward and give it a try. Remember to be patient with the process – it will pay you back in many ways. ~ Peace ~

tress affects people from all walks of life, and the causes of stress are as varied as the people it afﬂicts.

In its 2017 Stress in AmericaTM survey, the American Psychological Association found that the three most common sources of stress were the future of the nation (63 percent), money (62 percent) and work (61 percent). According to the National Institute of Mental Health, routine stress that becomes chronic can result in a host of negative side effects. Such stress can suppress the immune system, disrupt digestion and have an adverse effect on sleep. But men and women who feel stressed at the end of each day need not resign themselves to sleepless nights and/or weakened immune systems. A proactive approach to alleviating stress during the day can help men and women reduce their stress levels and avoid the negative side effects associated with chronic stress.

A 2015 60 Minutes/Vanity Fair poll found that people tend to be more judgmental of themselves than others when it comes to bad habits. Nearly seven in 10 Americans admitted they judge themselves more than they judge other people. Men and women who are hard on themselves when it comes to their bad habits may want to try some of the following techniques to break those behaviors: Employ the buddy system. Men and women who aspire to lose weight often stay motivated by exercising alongside a friend or family member and/or encouraging their families to adopt certain dietary changes. The buddy system also can be employed when trying to break bad habits. Whether a partner, family member or friend is trying to break the same bad habit or not, having someone along to praise your successes and discourage you from falling back into bad habits can make overcoming certain

behaviors that much easier. Try something new. When trying to quit a bad habit, having something to do in its place can help. For example, men and women who want to spend less time staring at their devices or watching television can benefit from finding something healthy to do in the hours they would normally be spending online or on the couch. For example, adults may find joining a recreational sports league gets them out of the house on weeknights when they would otherwise be sitting at home watching television. Replacing something that’s perceived as a negative habit or behavior with one that’s considered positive can provide the motivation necessary to kick a bad habit. Figure out what’s triggering your bad habit. Another way to kick a bad habit is to understand what triggers it. Such an understanding can help people develop healthier reactions to the triggers,

athletic competitions. Stop the Bleed training enables me to now provide immediate assistance to halt serious bleeding until emergency responders arrive. While I hope I never have to utilize the skills learned in Stop the Bleed, the training could one day prove to be the difference between life and death.” According to a National Academies of Science study, trauma is the leading cause of death for Americans under the age of 46. In many cases, the deaths are due to blood loss and are preventable. The Stop the Bleed program teaches tactics to recognize life-threatening bleeding and provide immediate response to control that bleeding including by direct pressure, the use of tourniquets, or packing

(filling) a wound with gauze or clean cloth. Bleeding wounds, such as to the arms and legs, can many times be controlled by direct pressure. Dr. D’Andrea Joseph, Chief of NYU Winthrop’s Division of Trauma and Critical Care, hopes that Stop the Bleed will become a standard lifesaving program just like CPR. The Hospital is encouraging institutions to install Stop the Bleed kits, which include tourniquets, alongside defibrillators in public venues and at schools. Stop the Bleed The Trauma team from NYU Winthrop Hospital, an ACS Level 1 Trauma Center, expanded the scope of its Stop the Bleed program to more than a dozen Athletic Trainers who serve area high schools throughout Nassau County. Athletic Trainers from Syosset and Locust Valley high schools participated in this week’s training alongside NYU Winthrop’s Athletic Trainers who serve high schools in Garden City, East Meadow, Herricks, Hempstead, Rockville Centre, Plainview, Westbury, Uniondale and Levittown among others. Knowledge gained through Stop the Bleed is most often associated with treating injuries following mass casualties, gun violence or car crashes, but sports injuries can

also be very serious. By empowering the Athletic Trainers through Stop the Bleed, high school sports teams in Nassau County will now be better prepared to address a wide range of injury possibilities – including life-threatening bleeding. “The NYU Winthrop Athletic Trainer team collaborates with physicians to provide preventative services, emergency care, clinical diagnosis, rehabilitation of injuries and more,” said Christopher Napoli, MS, ATC, Supervisor of Athletic Training Services at NYU Winthrop. “Empowering Athletic Trainers through Stop the Bleed helps round out their capabilities if faced with serious bleeding, enabling them to provide assistance to save lives and

limbs. This training should be required for Athletic Trainers in every school district on Long Island.” NYU Winthrop’s Athletic Trainers are part of the Hospital’s Sport Medicine program and the Athletic Trainers’ services include community outreach on acute care of injuries. “Although most injuries that occur in athletics are relatively minor, lifethreatening injuries are unpredictable and can occur without warning,” added Tony Marra, Athletic Trainer at Locust Valley High School. “Serious injury can occur during any physical activity – and at any level of participation. Now, following Stop the Bleed training by NYU Winthrop trauma experts, I’ll be equipped to provide lifesaving assistance during

serious bleeding situations should they arise.” Stop the Bleed is a national program that encourages first responders and everyday citizens to become trained to assist in a bleeding emergency until professional medical aid arrives. The NYU Winthrop Trauma team has been training organizations and residents across Long Island, bringing the program’s lifesaving techniques to firefighters, public safety officers, health professionals, universities, public entertainment venues and, more recently, high school staffs. Summer Portfolio Program Art Adventure Program (SAA) and was a teaching assistant at SAA while earning her Bachelor’s Degree. As a high school student Korey attended the Art League’s Summer Portfolio Program where she went on to earn scholarships to attend the New York Institute of Technology and Dowling College, earning her Bachelor’s Degree in Arts and Sciences, with a dual major in Secondary Education and Visual Arts. Lucas Sheridan has been with the Art League’s Summer Portfolio Program since 2016. When not teaching the summer program, Lucas teaches at the Baccalaureate School of Global Education as an IB Studio Art Teacher and Curriculum Developer, a position he has held since 2011. Prior to the Baccalaureate School he was an Art Teacher and Curriculum Developer at the NYC Lab School. Sheridan earned his BFA in Drawing and Painting at Syracuse University and his MA in Art Education at Brooklyn College. His recent students have applied to and been accepted to a wide range of schools including: Pratt Institute, Rhode Island School of Design, The School of Visual Arts, Maryland Institute College of Art, Parsons School of Design, and Yale. The Summer Portfolio Development Program

runs in two three-week sessions from 9:30am to 2:30pm at the Art League’s center in Dix Hills. Session One takes place July 9th-July 27th, Session Two takes place July 30th-August 17th. A public exhibition in the Art League’s main gallery featuring artwork created by program participants will be on view August 11th through August 19th.
