ith a May 6th victory against Riverhead, the East Islip Varsity Boys Track team finished the season with an undefeated 6-0 record, clinching the League Championship. The close 7264 win came down to the final relay before the Redmen pulled ahead. This was the first time since 1979 that East Islip was Spring Track Champions. Marking The Milestones By: Jamie Lynn Ryan I’m not sure when it first occurred to me, but at some point over the course of the last few weeks, I came to the somewhat startling realization that it has been 10 full years since I graduated from college. A whole decade. Wow. I’m not sure why this came as such a shock. After all, the math clearly adds up. And I did attend my high school’s 10-year reunion a full 4 years ago. But still, it seemed that there would be a bit more of a cushion until the next milestone. I suppose time flies while you’re busy Over 40 Years In Business!

working to make ends meet and your life is not dictated by a bell schedule. Although, come to think of it, there were no bells to signal the beginning or ending of class in college, which was nice in its own way. It was that subtle transition from the structure of high school to the faux freedom of “the real world,” where you were able to choose a path well suited to your future pursuits and, well, pursue it. And now here we are, 10 years later. Bells have been replaced by alarm clocks and deadlines and bills and all those fun adult

responsibilities. To think we once thought finals and term papers were the ultimate source of stress, right? It almost makes school seem appealing once again. Almost. To all those graduating from college this Spring, congratulations. May you find something worth pursuing that brings you a great deal of happiness and fulfillment; ideally, something which pays the bills, of course. And may you savor these next years most of all as, before you know it, you will be receiving invitations to your own 10 year college reunion.

The Long Island Council on Alcoholism and Drug Dependence, Inc. For the third consecutive year, Goldman Sachs volunteers will work with the Suffolk County Vanderbilt Museum’s corps of volunteer gardeners on May 19th to prepare, plant and mulch the Museum’s large organic vegetable garden. The project includes preparation, weeding and planting the flower gardens around the Vanderbilt Mansion. The bountiful harvest from the organic garden is donated each year to a local food pantry. Volunteers from the Goldman Sachs Community Team Works (CTW) initiative will work with the Vanderbilt’s own volunteer gardeners. In the past two years, the firm’s volunteers have expanded the vegetable garden and, with a corporate grant, have installed an advanced drip-irrigation system that has increased the yield per plot. CTW is Goldman Sachs’ global initiative that allows the firm’s employees one day off each year to volunteer in team-based projects coordinated with local nonprofit organizations. In 2013, more than 25,000 volunteers from 50 offices around the world partnered with over 900 nonprofit organizations on a diverse array of community service projects. The 43-acre estate was built in the early twentieth century by William K. Vanderbilt II, greatgrandson of Cornelius Vanderbilt, founder of the New York Central Railroad and builder of Manhattan’s Grand Central Terminal. raising funds for Friends of Karen,” said Evelyn. “And heartwarming for our family that we have an opportunity to give back to this organization in this fun way.” Since 1978, Friends of Karen has been providing emotional, financial and advocacy support for children with a lifethreatening illness and their families in order to keep them stable, functioning and able to cope. The Art League of Long Island is presenting a series of three lectures conducted by curator and art historian Franklin Hill Perrell in the League’s Jeanie Tengelsen Gallery between June and November 2014. As former Chief Curator at the Nassau County Museum of Art with a finely tuned background in art history and contemporary art, Perrell’s lectures are known for their witty and incisive observations. Dreaming of walking around in art museums and cobblestone streets blanketed with history, Rachel’s wish was to go to Europe. Proud of her family history, Rachel and her family will be headed to Rome, Italy for a 9-day journey. “Knowing that I had this wish gave me something to look forward to while finishing up my treatment,” said Ragone. Rachel completed her treatment in January and was medically cleared to travel. “We are going to Rome, there is so much to do there, and I can’t wait to eat the food!” “A wish gives the patient something to hold on to and look forward to during some of the darkest moments,” said

The Long Island Council on Alcoholism and Drug Dependence (LICADD) has received a $150,000 competitive grant from the New York State Department of Health/ AIDS Institute to launch a new program for Long Islanders with HIV/AIDS who also struggle with substance use disorders and/or other mental health issues. Called Positive Connections, the program will ensure that local residents living with HIV/ AIDS have full access to regular behavioral health screenings, facilitated entry into addiction and mental health treatment and ongoing psychoeducational support designed to promote treatment adherence, sexual/substance abuse risk reduction and optimal physical and mental health. “In the midst of Long Island’s opiate crisis,

we are seeing a growing generation of young substance users who lack cultural and personal knowledge of HIV/AIDS and it’s risk factors,” said LICADD Executive Director Dr. Jeffrey Reynolds. “These are folks who were in diapers during the height of the AIDS crisis and aren’t likely to be reached by traditional AIDS service providers,” he added. “We, of course, thank the AIDS Institute for funding this important initiative as we work to engage young opiate users.” One of Long Island’s oldest nonprofits, LICADD offers school-based prevention education programs and a wide range of communitybased services to families impacted by addiction. The agency’s specialty programs include a medically supervised overdose prevention

program, a mentoring program for children of prisoners, an E-Therapy initiative offering relapse prevention via secure video conferencing, and Long Island’s largest Employee Assistance Program (EAP). Positive Connections will operate out of LICADD’s offices conveniently located in Mineola, Ronkonkoma and Riverhead. Counting Down The Days To The End

As I count down the days until my final day of high school, I can’t help but feel nostalgic about the friends that I’ve made, the things that I’ve done, and the chapter of my life that is now coming to a close. These past few years have gone by so fast. From the moment I walked into SJB on the first day of my freshman year, I knew that my final day would be hard. I’ve made special bonds here. I’ve done great things here. St. John’s has afforded me the ability to attend Villanova in the fall. Without SJB, my high school years would have been mediocre. Now, as a

graduating student, I feel torn between emotions. It is a bittersweet end to the greatest part of my life thus far. As I close my locker for the last few times, I am just beginning to realize how special my time here was. I’ve never felt so accepted by a group of my peers. It is with a heavy heart that I write this article. I am going to miss every aspect of SJB. From the Cougar Crazies to Mrs. Walsh screaming in the hallways, St. John’s has been a pleasure. My years here have influenced my future. I’ve just qualified to row in the National Championship for St. John’s. Hopefully, I can

TEAMING UP FOR A CLEAN-UP - Islip Town Councilman Steve Flotteron recently joined other elected officials and local community leaders at a clean-up event for neighborhoods in Brentwood and Central Islip as part of the Clean Streets initiative. The volunteers removed litter from numerous sites, and helped beautify neighborhood roadways in our town.

Islip Middle School science teacher Ashley Bloch has been selected as a New York State STEM Master Teacher for the Long Island region. Ms. Bloch will work with 41 other teachers across Nassau and Suffolk counties to improve the science, technology, engineering and mathematics education of students and teachers across the state

during the next four years. “I teach science because I have always had a natural curiosity about the world around me, and I really enjoy sparking that curiosity in my students,” said Ms. Bloch. “Seeing my students become motivated about learning really inspires me to push myself and be a better teacher. I’m also lucky that I get to work with so

many wonderful people – there’s a lot of positive and productive energy here!” The Master Teacher program encourages educators to mentor their peers and deepen their own scholarship and professional development in the areas of science, technology, engineering and mathematics.

Scholar Athlete Of The Month

Bay Shore High School Senior Ryan Mazzie was recently featured on News 12 and the News 12.com website as their Scholar Athlete of the Month. Ryan’s baseball coach, Mr. Herbst, describes him as “determined, motivated, compassionate and intelligent” and went on to say, “He is an involved student-athlete whose hard work, both in the classroom and the athletic arena, has enabled him to become an exemplary leader at Bay Shore High School.” In the classroom, Ryan is an accomplished student. He boasts a 101.55 (weighted) GPA, is ranked fourth in his class of 417 students, is an International Baccalaureate Diploma Candidate and has been named to the Principal’s List and selected for Bay Shore High School’s Breakfast for Champions. Ryan has also been involved in numerous scholastic activities, such as Student Council (Class Treasurer), National Honor Society (Treasurer), Model UN, SADD, Athletes Helping Athletes, Peer Support, Math Club and the school newspaper, The Maroon Echo (Sports Editor). No stranger to community service, Ryan has taken part in community service projects such as Spruce Up Bay Shore, Fall Clean Up, Light the Night, football clinics, baseball clinics and Bay Shore High School’s Breast

Cancer Brunch. Ryan displays an uncommon level of compassion for someone his age. In 9th grade, Ryan donated his bone marrow to help save his younger sister, Melina, who was battling a rare form of aplastic anemia. As an athlete, Ryan is quite a standout. In his first Varsity football game, Ryan threw six touchdown passes,

breaking an 86-year old school record. He has continued to excel on the football field as the starting quarterback and team Captain. As a Senior, he was named First Team All-Division and honored as the starting quarterback in the Suffolk County All-Star Game.

On the baseball diamond, Ryan is a left-handed pitcher/1st baseman/team Captain who serves as a threat in the heart of the batting order. As a Junior, Ryan led the team in home runs, tied for the team lead in RBI’s and maintained a .408 batting average, earning him AllLeague honors. For his athletic prowess, Ryan appeared in a “Best Feature” sports story, in Newsday’s Top 100 (football), in Blue Chips Prospects Top 100 (baseball), in an MSG Varsity feature and was recognized as the 201314 NYSAHPERD Suffolk Zone Award male student recipient for Bay Shore High School. Being able to successfully balance all of his scholastic, athletic and serviceoriented activities is a testament to Ryan’s tremendous work ethic, character and uncanny maturity. In describing himself, Ryan stated, “I am driven by that same motivation as a mountain climber. Sure the climb to the top is difficult, but once you get there the view is breathtaking.” Ryan plans on playing baseball at the collegiate level, while pursuing a degree in finance. The Bay Shore School District congratulates Ryan and his family on his impressive achievements and wishes him the best of luck in the future.

Special Honor

East Islip High School science teacher Kathleen Dinota was among only 42 Long Island teachers to be named New York State Master Teachers by Gov. Cuomo’s office. She and the other honorees are the first group of Master Teachers from Long Island. A total of 215 teachers statewide have been named since the initiative began last October. The Master Teachers program, an element of New York’s mission to upgrade science education and help students better prepare for STEM careers, recognizes science, technology, engineering and math educators who demonstrate outstanding skills in professional development and peer mentoring.

“I am very excited to have the opportunity to work with the other Master Teachers to improve STEM education in New York,” said Dinota. “I am currently in the third year of a program at Stony Brook University pursuing a Ph.D. in science education. I hope to continue to work with pre-service and new teachers upon completion. The Master Teachers program will be the first step in what I hope will be a new dimension in my teaching career.” Dinota has taught at East Islip High School since 1990, including such subjects as biology, chemistry, life science and marine science. Since 2001, she has taught honors and AP chemistry. Enrollment for the latter course has grown significantly during her tenure. “I am passionate about teaching and my students know this,” she said. She received a Bachelor of Science degree in marine science from Southampton College of Long Island University in 1982, and worked as a lab technician at Cold Spring Harbor Laboratory. Deciding to switch course and pursue teaching, she obtained her master’s degree in secondary education from Dowling College in 1986. Prior to joining the staff in East Islip, she taught biology and earth science at William Floyd High School in Mastic Beach. “I found the work at Cold Spring Harbor Laboratory interesting and the environment intellectually stimulating, but soon realized that I did not enjoy research and rethought my plans for the future,” she recalled. “Since childhood, I had given passing thought to teaching and it seemed like a logical course to take. East Islip was designated one of the Best Communities for Music Education by the NAMM Foundation this year, a highly significant achievement announced at the East Islip Board of Education’s April 24th business meeting. For the last 15 years, the annual “Best Communities” survey has highlighted music’s crucial role in the academic success of students by recognizing

school districts that place exceptional emphasis on maintaining music education as part of their core curriculum. Only 376 districts were chosen for this honor in 2014, out of thousands of applicants from across the U.S. The NAMM designation is reviewed by the University of Kansas-affiliated Institute for Educational Research and Public Service, and is based on several metrics including

science class during the last period of the school day. I was hooked from that moment and have never regretted my decision to change my intended career path. The desire to pursue a doctorate took a backseat to raising my family and my energy went into becoming the best educator that I could.” As an item writer for the New York State Education Department, she wrote questions for the state’s Regents chemistry exam and participated in pre-test and fieldtest ratings, range-finding, and question editing. She also prepared review questions for the 2005 textbook “Chemistry: The Physical Setting.” She has also served at East Islip as a mentor in the new teacher induction program, a class adviser and a National Honor Society adviser. Dinota collaborated with a colleague to develop the school’s science research program in 2011. It began with 18 students in the first year course, and has since expanded to include 25 students in a first-year course and an additional nine students continuing through the second and third years. “Working with an extremely limited budget, we have tried to instill a love of science and have begun actively entering a variety of science competitions,” Dinota said. “I love to share the excitement of the students as they delve into their areas of interest, and I enjoy helping them make their way from students to active researchers. Golf Outing Set Overton, who serves as board chair for Mercy Haven, emphasized Empire’s commitment to community issues and local residents through its support for a cause that provides housing for Long Island’s most atrisk residents. Two ALS patients at the event were strong enough to walk the day’s trek onto the Stony Brook University campus. Clinton Strait, of East Northport, who continues to work as a project manager, said he felt inspired and would hopefully walk on other days during the Ride. Paul Weisman, of Bohemia, walked the Ride course for two days prior to the Stony Brook event. On hand to support the Ride for Life and Stony Brook event were New York State Senator John J. Flanagan, Town of Brookhaven Supervisor Ed Romaine, and Suffolk County Legislator Kara Hahn. The event concluded with the Remembrance Ceremony – when the names of 90 people lost to ALS – representing the number of minutes between deaths from ALS in the United States – were read aloud. As the gusts of a coming rainstorm picked up, the families and friends of patients stood around the pinwheel “field of dreams.” Family members then read their loved one’s name aloud, a bell was rung, and a balloon released into the air to honor each of them.

Project Lifesaver On Tuesday, the Suffolk County Sheriff’s Office and Brookhaven Town Supervisor Edward Romaine presented a Project Lifesaver informational seminar to parents and caregivers of individuals with Autism and other cognitive impairments. Representatives from Eastern Suffolk BOCES, as well as local school and medical professionals also attended the event, which was held at the Brookhaven Town Hall Auditorium in Farmingville. The Suffolk County Sheriff’s Office Project Lifesaver program is a countywide emergency response locator service capable of finding individuals diagnosed with cognitive impairments

which may cause them to wander and become lost. The program, which Sheriff Vincent DeMarco implemented in Suffolk County in 2007, combines radio technology and specially trained search and rescue personnel from the Suffolk County Sheriff’s Office. Project Lifesaver clients wear a personalized one ounce battery operated transmitter bracelet which emits a tracking signal every second, 24 hours a day. Transmitters are smaller than a quarter and each transmitter has its own unique frequency. Suffolk County Sheriff’s Office Project Lifesaver personnel are specially trained, not only in search and rescue with the use of the electronic tracking equipment, but also in

the methods necessary to communicate with a person who has a cognitive impairment such as Alzheimer’s, Dementia, Autism, Down Syndrome, or other mental challenges. To be eligible for Project Lifesaver, clients must be a resident of Suffolk County and have a history of wandering related to cognitive impairments. The 6,000 pinwheels displayed on a Stony Brook University field represents the annual lives lost to ALS (amyotrophic lateral sclerosis), or Lou Gehrig’s disease. The field of pinwheels is also symbolic of a growing theme of the annual Ride for Life and for Christopher Pendergast, a 21-year ALS patient, advocate and founder of the Ride for Life Organization. Pendergast, the ALS specialists at Stony Brook Medicine, and supporters of the Ride for Life envision that like the pinwheels, a cure for this fatal neurodegenerative disease is out there with an answer ‘blowing in the wind.’ “Hope is alive, and there is no doubt in my mind we will eventually find a cure. That’s why we press forward,” said Pendergast, at the Ride for Life Celebration and Remembrance Ceremony took place on the Stony Brook University campus on May 10th. The ceremony is the cornerstone event of the 12-day power wheelchair trek by ALS patients that ends in Manhattan on May 17th. The Ride for Life, which raises awareness and funds for ALS research, began in 1998. During the ceremony, the Ride for Life donated $160,000 to Stony Brook’s Christopher Pendergast ALS Center of Excellence, the only ALS Association-certified center on Long Island. “This day is about the Riders, the people who support them, those who provide their medical care, and the researchers who are working tirelessly to find a cure for ALS,” said L. The East Islip High School Medical and Health Technology Career Academy partnered with North Shore-LIJ Southside Hospital to present the school’s second annual Medical Career Day on April 29th, featuring 72 professionals from North Shore-LIJ, dozens of interactive medical exhibits, informational tables and health-related workshop lectures, designed to provide students with working knowledge of career options in the fields of medicine and health. “Two years ago, we

created the Medical Academy program to help students see what it’s like to go into the medical field, and to learn that it can be much more than being a doctor or a nurse,” said Israel Malinowitzer, Career Academy director. “Partnering with North Shore-LIJ has been wonderful, and for this event, their professionals came here for the entire day and were more than willing to sit with our kids, answer their questions, and provide chances for internships.” Raymond Smith, a paramedic supervisor for

Undefeated Champions

With a May 6th victory against Riverhead, the East Islip varsity boys track team finished the season with an undefeated 6-0 record, clinching the league championship. The close 72-64 win came down to the final relay before the Redmen pulled ahead. This was the first time since 1979 that East Islip was spring track champions. The 4x4 relay team

of Zach Acocello, James Kelly, Tom Koppelmann and Alex Newhoff placed first. In discus, East Islip nailed down all three top spots, with throwers Jared Coupe (109 feet, 8 inches) first, Anthony Mattera (109 feet, 6 inches) second and Bob Hayword (107 feet, 4 inches) third. “What a great season, and what a job by the team and the coaches,” said

Board of Education trustee Glenn Reed. “As I told the boys, this was a complete team effort,” said coach Ralph Tubello. “Everybody was involved in this process. The team kept their eyes on the prize, which was the league title.”

Second-graders in Mary Bauernfeind’s class at Islip’s Maud S. Sherwood Elementary School teamed with associates Sarah Bjorkgren and Bill Kuhlwilm from the Bay Shore Home Depot to participate in the company’s Kids Workshop Program. Working with

parent volunteers and dressed in brightly colored orange Home Depot aprons, the students hammered nails and painted to create a perfect birdhouse. For the in-school program, Home Depot provided all of the tools and materials necessary

for the students and their adult helpers to assemble and complete their birdhouses. The program gave the students the opportunity to practice following instructions and working cooperatively in small groups, while further developing their hand-eye coordination.
