A 45th Reunion BBQ for the Lindy Class of 1970 is planned for Saturday, August 1st, at Lindenhurst Fireman’s Pavilion, from 12 to 4 p.m. Cost is $30 for age 21 and over, $25 for under age 21; kids under 5 are free. Following their commencement, the newly minted physicians will start their post-graduate work at elite institutions across the country, including North ShoreLIJ hospitals. “I think we all realized the potential risks and benefits of being at a new medical school, and some of us were more apprehensive than others,” said Daniel Ohngemach, a member of the charter class who will train for a year in internal medicine before beginning a residency in radiology at North Shore-LIJ Health System. “But I knew that if I stayed true to myself, I would graduate a well-trained physician.” AJ Blood, a fellow graduate and past president of student government, agreed. “I looked at the track record of these institutions [North Shore-LIJ and Hofstra University] and the leadership brought in to begin the School of Medicine, and I saw an amazing opportunity,” said Blood, who is heading to Duke University to train in internal medicine. “I knew that far from a risk, I was being offered a chance to get in at the ground floor of the ‘Google’ of medical schools.” Said Samantha Ruff, who is looking forward to training in surgery at North Shore-LIJ: “The faculty and staff are incredibly supportive and engaged in the students’ development. Throughout my four years, there was never a shortage of faculty ready and willing to support me and my career.” The commencement ceremony also included the bestowing of the Branson Sparks Humanism Award. Sparks, who completed his first year with the charter class, died in 2013.

The inaugural class of Hofstra North Shore-LIJ School of Medicine, a group of 30 students who helped pioneer a new approach to medical education, graduated Monday at Hofstra University’s John Cranford Adams Playhouse. “This is an historic day,” said Hofstra University President Stuart Rabinowitz. “Four years ago, this gifted group of young men and women began a groundbreaking journey at a new medical school with a unique curriculum that challenges convention. Today, they graduate not just as doctors, but as innovators and leaders who will transform their profession for decades to come.” Established in 2008, the School of Medicine is the first allopathic medical school to open in New York State in more than 40 years. The institution has 2,200 faculty and approximately 280 students, a roster that is expected to grow to 400 by 2016. The school’s innovative curriculum combines basic science with clinical experience from the first day of a student’s training, focusing on patient interaction, interdisciplinary teamwork and community service. Among the innovations is training of all first-year medical students as emergency medical technicians whoride with North Shore-LIJ Health System ambulance crews. “Every graduating class is special, but a medical school’s charter class is truly distinctive,” said Lawrence G. Smith, MD, MACP, founding dean of the School of Medicine. “These students are confident self-starters whose participation helped us to shape and refine the cutting-edge curriculum that would make the School of Medicine a leading center for medical education in the

On May 2nd, the Moriches Paquatuck Squaws hosted their firstever Inlet Ride Bike-AThon in Westhampton Beach. Over 100 bicyclists participated in this event, with funds raised going to benefit Camp Pa-QuaTuck. Bicyclists enjoyed a 28-mile ride along Dune Road from the Moriches Inlet at Cupsogue Beach to the Shinnecock Inlet in Hampton Bays and back. Refreshments were

provided along the way and prizes were awarded to the top three riders who raised more than $500. The first 400 entrants to register received a free Inlet Ride T-shirt. After the event, all the riders were treated to lunch. Camp Pa-Qua-Tuck is a resident summer camp serving children and young adults ages 6-21 with both physical and developmental special needs. Its mission is to help these children to achieve equality,

dignity, and maximum independence through a safe quality program of camping, recreation and education. Throughout the program, campers participate in many activities, such as arts and crafts, talent shows, cook-outs, swimming and boating. Emmy’s Highest Honor Legendary sportscaster Bob Wolff was honored with the prestigious Governor’s award the New York Emmy’s® highest honor by the New York Academy of Television Arts and Sciences. Walking For Autism For the third consecutive year, volunteers will walk 130 miles across Long Island raising money for children and adults with autism and other developmental disabilities. The journey will begin on Sunday, May 24th, at the Montauk Point Lighthouse and will take the seasoned volunteers to the Brooklyn Bridge on Saturday, May 30th. The funds raised will benefit the Developmental Disabilities Institute (DDI), the leading service provider for children and adults with autism on Long Island, as well as bring about awareness of autism and other developmental disabilities. “I have had the honor and pleasure of working with these students/alumni from St. Johns University for over three years,” commented DDI Director of Development Dan Rowland. “I was astounded when they first proposed the idea of doing such an

event and then amazed that they are undertaking this journey for the third year in a row. I think this reflects very well on this generation of our future leaders as they all embody the highest ideals and dedication to serving others less fortunate.“ “DDI is an organization that is willing to go the extra mile for the children in its school program, so we decided to go the extra 130 miles for those kids as well” explained John Kenny, founder and organizer of the walk. Chickling Observation During the week of April 27th, kindergarten and first-grade classes at Islip’s Wing Elementary School had the opportunity to observe the beginning of life, watching daily as eggs hatched into ducklings. Accompanying a teaching unit on ducks and their life cycle, each

classroom was provided with five duck eggs from a local farm, which were kept in heated, see-through tanks for the students to observe – both visually and aurally – until they hatched into fuzzy yellow ducklings. At week’s end, the ducklings returned to the farm, leaving the

students with an indelible memory and a tangible connection to their biology curriculum. “It was a very exciting week at Wing,” said teacher Lucy Katsch. “The children were given the experience of a lifetime.”

Making His Mark Anoune Basse, a new student at the Cleary School for the Deaf’s secondary program at East Islip High School, joined East Islip’s boys spring track team in March, where he has made a mark as a sprinter in the

100-meter, 200-meter and relay events. “Anoune is participating in numerous track meets and invitationals this season across Suffolk County, representing East Islip High School,”

said Cleary coordinator Valerie Frederick. “He has aspirations of being on the soccer team this coming fall and is enjoying his time spent with his fellow athletes.”

Student Ambassadors Sworn In

Islip Town Supervisor Angie Carpenter recently swore in over 120 students into the Ambassador Program, a program that is run and created by Town of Islip Anti Bias Task Force Chairman Rabbi Moss and Co-Chairwoman Mary Louise Cohen. The students are selected from nine high schools and middle schools. They meet four times each year, rotating locations. Sessions feature guest speakers who tell stories of various biases and present a final project

about how they will take what they have learned and make a difference in their schools and communities. This program has grown quite significantly since its inception five years ago. They hope to continue to expand and include all middle and high schools throughout the Town of Islip. “It is encouraging to see these young leaders come together in an effort to improve relations within our community and promote equality,” said Islip Town

Supporting SADD East Islip High School’s Students Against Destructive Decisions club held its first SADD Awareness Day on April 30th, bringing awareness to many issues that SADD addresses including suicide, drunk driving, texting and driving, eating disorders and cyber bullying. According to SADD adviser Bridget Lopiccolo, the idea for the event came from previous SADD members, who wanted to have a day where students

could meet and speak to a variety of organizations that aid teens who have made destructive decisions and help in preventing future poor decisions. Numerous organizations were in attendance at the school, showing their support for SADD and providing opportunities for students to sign up to volunteer and get involved in their community. In addition to a sobriety testing station, four positive activity tables showcased things students

can do instead of making destructive decisions, such as drawing, creative writing, listening to music, exercise, yoga and martial arts. “Our students enjoyed the day of activities and speaking with the different organizations,” said Lopiccolo. “The SADD club members worked very hard to put it together and for next year, they are already thinking of ideas to add to the program.”

Learning Online Safety Twenty-seven Bay Shore High School IB students traveled to Denmark for an international exchange visit with a Danish high school this past spring recess. The students’ goal was to raise their global awareness with a ten-day immersion in Danish culture. Acccompanied by Mr. Nelson, IB Coordinator, Mr. Sullivan, IB English teacher, Ms. Watford, Assistant Principal, and Mr. Pashkin, Principal, the students started their tour with a three-day exploration of Copenhagen, highlighted by a Saturday bike tour of the capital’s most charming neighborhoods. Excursions to Amalienborg Castle to see the changing of the guard and to Helsingor to visit Kronborg Castle, fabled inspiration for the castle in Shakespeare’s Hamlet, were followed by evenings spent under the colorful lights of

Tivoli, the world’s second oldest amusement park. After the whirlwind tour of Danish culture, the students traveled to Odense, Denmark to meet their host families for the second half of the trip, where they attended a Danish high school, Sct. Knud’s Gymnasium and collaborated on international projects. On Tuesday, the IB students received a lesson in Danish language and history. On Wednesday, the students continued research for their service project to aid Syrian refugees. As part of an initiative developed in collaboration with Sct. Knuds’ students, the IB students traveled to the Red Cross Center in Jelling, Denmark to meet immigrants seeking asylum. The students gathered with refugees from Syria, Uganda, and Eritrea to hear accounts of the harrowing

Young Lawyers East Islip High School’s Mock Trial team recently earned second place overall in the annual New York State Law Day Tournament, competing against 15 other teams from Suffolk, Nassau and New York City. Now in its 41st year, the tournament was hosted by Northport High School and sponsored by the New York State Bar Association and the Law, Youth and

Citizenship Committee. Students representing East Islip were Brittney Baker, Erica Hayden, Elizabeth Loizides and Joseph Teknus as attorneys, Angela Loizides and Kierstin O’Hara as witnesses, and Jessica Muroff, Jessica Sabal and Katrina Shea as legal researchers. The judging panel for the tournament included the NYBA’s former president

Thomas Levin, acting State Supreme Court Justice James C. Hudson and Touro Law School professor Thomas Schweitzer. “All the judges praised our East Islip students for their knowledge of the law, legal arguments, and excellent presentation,” said the team’s adviser, Patricia Lester.

Art Contest Winners The first annual eSchoolData Login Page Art Contest was a resounding success, with over two dozen entries received. The contest runs regionally in NY over the course of the school year to promote as much student participation as possible. School districts in Suffolk County were the latest to complete the contest and will be followed by eSchoolData districts in the Western New York region. The Northeast region was the first area scheduled and was completed in December of 2014 followed by districts in Nassau and Westchester Counties. Participating districts’ initial entries were accepted from February 2015 through April 2015. After careful consideration, the voting committee selected the First, Second and Third Place winners below:

Contestants were required to submit works of art that focused on a specific theme relative to current educational topics. Submitted by Denise M. Poveromo... My neighbor recently found a mother duck who had made a nest in her front yard, in a little garden near a big oak tree. I went over and was amazed to see that no squirrels, dogs, cats, etc. have bothered her! The mother duck sits proudly on the nest she has made with her feathers. There are several eggs she nestles upon each day, and only leaves briefly. I managed to snap a quick shot of her, so as not to scare her. She will probably have the chicks sometime in mid-June. This cute Copiague mama duck is the talk of all the neighbors! We all wait anxiously for the arrival of her babies.

Month Of Awareness In recognition of National Autism Awareness Month, the East Islip School District embarked on a wide-ranging awareness campaign and slate of related activities during April. Each school in the district organized informational and awareness projects as well as fundraising initiatives. Classes made posters with facts about autism and informational poster boards were displayed in the many of the schools. “I am confident that the creative initiatives in each school truly helped to raise awareness and answer questions about autism spectrum disorders,” said Susan Kosser, the district’s assistant to the superintendent for student support services. “It was wonderful to see all students – including our students with autism spectrum disorders and other disabilities – as well as staff participating in this important initiative.” Connetquot, Ruth C. Kinney and Timber Point elementary schools recognized World Autism Awareness Day on April 2nd, with students and staff dressed in primary colors that represent autism awareness. Students at the schools also colored various puzzle pieces, hung in prominent location, to represent the motto “We all fit together.” Over at JFK, the month was celebrated with various fun and educational activities including a special “Autism Cube” donated by the EJ Autism Foundation. After students painted the different puzzle pieces on the cube, it was put on display in the school’s main lobby.

East Islip High School dedicated April 1 and 2 to autism awareness, with students from the career development program and Girls Leaders Club selling “I Support Autism Awareness” puzzle pieces outside the cafeteria during lunch periods. The puzzles were displayed throughout the school. According to school psychologist Lauren Costantino, the proceeds were donated to the

Students who recorded all of their answers or wore a shirt in support of autism were able to enter a raffle to decide an ice bucket challenge, with the end result being the selection of Principal Mark Bernard and Assistant Principal Jason Stanton to be doused with ice water. The middle school’s Art Club created an autism awareness banner, and during lunch periods, the Best Buddies club set up an informational booth and sold bracelets to raise money for the EJ Autism Foundation, with purchasers entered into a raffle to win an autism awareness shirt. Heyanka’s technology classes were able to utilize their Full Spectrum Laser engraver to create a stunning sign for National Autism Awareness Month. His classes watched videos relating to autism and conducted research before engraving facts and inspirational quotes about the disorder onto a huge piece of wood that was later displayed in the school’s lobby.

Principal’s Challenge As part of the Islip school’s Parents As Reading Partners program, Wing Elementary School Principal Christopher Smalley challenged his charges to read for a total of 75,000 minutes during the two-week period from March 9th-20th. The

Three Months & Still Swimming Strong By: Jamie Lynn Ryan Well, barring any unforeseen circumstances (fingers and flippers crossed), tomorrow will mark Buddy the Betta’s much anticipated 3-month birthday with me. Why such a big fuss for such a tiny milestone? I think it’s fair to say that any landmarks achieved while residing in a fishbowl should be celebrated, don’t you? Other than his uncanny fascination with the ornamental plant he resides beside (well, in, really), he seems perfectly content to swim laps around his bowl, only pausing long enough to inhale a few flakes, chew, and move on. They say that fish do truly come to know their owners over time, and I firmly believe this to be so. The moment I walk into the room, I

don’t even need to flip the light switch before I see my little Buddy, face pressed against the glass, anxiously awaiting my return. Who needs a puppy with a greeting like that, right? Of course, it would be nice to interact on a bit more of a personal level. With this in mind, I decided to briefly dip the tip of my finger into the bowl one night just to see what he would do. Well, let’s just say that anything moving near the surface is assumed to be edible. No sooner had my finger hit the water, then Buddy came zooming over, anxiously pecking. Curious, I decided to do a little research to see A.) if Bettas have actual teeth (they do); B.) if they can harm humans with aforementioned teeth (not so

much); and C.) if I was creating an unsanitary environment by welcoming these tiny Betta “kisses” to my finger. Apparently, as long as you thoroughly wash your hands and don’t immerse your entire hand in the bowl, you can even gently pet your Betta on the back. How sweet! I went on to read that, in most cases, these extremely intelligent fish can even be trained to perform simple tricks, such as “jumping” to get their food, spreading their fins in front of a mirror, and responding to feeding time by waiting in a set spot for the prized flakes. Well, we’ve definitely mastered that last one. On to the rest of the circus tricks! Happy Birthday Buddy. Here’s to many more…
