Hope House Ministries (HHM) is a non-profit organization located in Port Jefferson. They provide compassionate, comprehensive and competent care for the poor, the marginal and the wounded among us. This commitment is woven in the Gospel vision that all life is sacred and every human person is unique and has the right to be respected and protected. They have accomplished much over the 40+ years they have been helping others with minimal financial assistance from federal, state or county agencies. They depend on the generosity of private contributions, fundraising events and corporate donations. Hope House Ministries services people in both Nassau County and Suffolk County, offering services free of charge. Together, their staff and volunteers have created an empowering sense of family and community that are the change agents, helping young people grow in self-discipline, critical thinking, problem solving skills and personal responsibility. There are so many ways that this non-profit can truly help you get your life on a better track. Additionally, there are plenty of ways for people to get involved in helping others through volunteering. Over the past 40 years, thousands of people have donated their time and talent to help this organization reach those in need. If you are interested in volunteering with Hope House Ministries individually or with a group, here are just some of the areas you can do so: Office Work, Cooking, Photography, Transportation for Residents, Maintenance, Gardening/Farming/ Grounds Keeping, Transportation for Furniture/Donation Pick Up. The idea of non-profits asking for donations can become stale and repetitive, but it really is so important for us to give financially to non-profits that rely a large amount on donations instead of grant money. Here’s two reasons why you may want to consider giving to this organization: What if this was personal? Imagine your son or daughter, your grandchildren, your own brother or sister, or parent experiencing homelessness, addiction, mental health issues, domestic violence or severe depression. Imagine your family torn apart by circumstances out of your control. If you were connected to a crisis situation you would be very comforted to know that an entire community of supporters have made it possible for your loved one to find professional help and healing free of charge. So consider joining that network of support and be a part of the Hope House Ministries’ family. All of the services Hope House Ministries offers are FREE! This includes housing, supportive professional services, counseling, healthcare, insurance, transportation, food, clothing and opportunities for education both for both high school, college or trade school. When explained to those new to their agency, few believe it possible. Many question how they are able to stay open. Spirit’s Promise Equine Rescue is offering Summer Clinics every week from Monday, June 28 through Monday, August 30. During the clinic children will learn the ins and outs of a working horse rescue and will help groom, feed and care for the horses and other animals on the farm. Cost is $45 per day for members or $65 for non-members. The clinics will be held from 8:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. for children in grades 1 – 7. A “Leader in Training” program is available for grades 8

2nd Oakwood Cemetery Tour: A Walk Through Time With Islip and Bay Shore’s Famous & Infamous

Meet Islip High School’s Valedictorian And Salutatorian Islip High School’s Class of 2021 valedictorian and salutatorian are Lauren Callaway and Jessica Chan, respectively. Callaway, who earned a 103.16 weighted GPA, serves as president of the school’s English Honor Society. A Girl Scouts Gold Award recipient, she was chosen for Empire Girls State and Brookhaven National Laboratory’s Student Partnerships for Advanced Research and Knowledge. She is a

member of Islip’s Science Olympiad and varsity softball and tennis teams. Callaway will attend Georgia Institute of Technology, majoring in biomedical engineering. “I’d like to thank my family, friends and teachers who supported me during the past four years,” Callaway said. Chan, who earned a 102.89 weighted GPA, serves as vice president of the school’s National Honor Society. She is also

a member of Islip’s student government, Mathletes and robotics teams, and Math and English honor societies. Chan will attend Carnegie Mellon University, majoring in computer engineering “I am so thankful for my family, friends and Islip for not only supporting me, but offering countless opportunities, which has helped me obtain this great achievement,” Chan said.

He was a successful coastal captain operating an oyster sloop. Burr was attacked and killed by a crew member and died at sea; the marker was placed in the cemetery by his family to commemorate his life”.

Volunteering is a great way for individuals to strengthen their communities, but it also can be a unique way for individuals to improve their own overall happiness. A 2020 study published in the Journal of Happiness Studies examined 70,000 participants, each of whom received

surveys that asked questions regarding their volunteering habits and mental health.The study found that, when compared to those who did not volunteer, people who had volunteered in the previous 12 months were more satisfied with their lives and gave their overall health higher ratings.

The frequency of giving back to one’s community also may affect just how much volunteering affects mental health. Study participants who volunteered at least once per month rated their mental health even higher than those who volunteered but did so infrequently.

East Islip Middle School sixth grader Angelena Smith was named the first-place winner of the grade 5-8 category in the Town of Islip’s Virtual Earth Day Poster Contest. The school was awarded a $250 gift card to Barnes

and Noble, while Smith received a Nook tablet as a prize. A member of the middle school’s Art Service Club and Craft Club, Smith was recognized at an Earth Day ceremony on April 22, hosted by Islip Town Supervisor Angie

Carpenter at Islip Town Hall. “Angelena is a very bright and creative student, and I’m very proud of her accomplishments,” said art teacher Joy Taylor. “Congratulations on this very well-deserved award.”

Alzheimer’s Caregiver Tips needs a playbook to succeed, and the same is true of caregiving teams. Team members can often ignore their own needs, leading to stress and potentially health problems. Every good caregiving plan includes both the person with Alzheimer’s or dementia and the people providing care.” The Frank & Barbara Broyles Foundation was founded in honor of former University of Arkansas football coach and athletic director Frank Broyles and his wife, Barbara, who both had Alzheimer’s disease. In 2006, Coach Broyles penned “Coach Broyles’ Playbook for Alzheimer’s Caregivers,” which offers strategies and goal-oriented advice for those caring for loved ones

with Alzheimer’s. Those who attend the free program will receive a free copy of Broyles’ book. According to the Alzheimer’s Association, there are more than 6 million Americans living with Alzheimer’s disease and more than 11 million family members caring for them. In New York alone, there are 410,000 people battling the disease and 586,000 caregivers. “Play by Play: Creating Care Plans” will begin at 2 p.m. EDT on Thursday, May 20. Caring for a loved one with Alzheimer’s disease can be stressful, and for those who are new to caregiving, it can also feel overwhelming. To help families cope with the challenges of dementia caregiving, the Alzheimer’s Association is teaming up with the Frank & Barbara Broyles Foundation to share helpful tips. On May 20, the two organizations will host “Play by Play: Creating Care Plans,” a virtual program on combating caregiver stress and maintaining a healthy lifestyle. “A plan can make a real difference for anyone involved in caregiving,” said Kate Anastasia, director of programs at the Alzheimer’s Association. “Every team

Before COVID-19, donors could stop by community blood drives at convenient locations like high schools, colleges, and offices. It has been one

year since these groups had to cancel their blood drives due to COVID-19 and few have been able to resume these lifesaving events. NYBC currently has a 4 day supply of blood, which is well below what is needed by area hospitals. New York’s healthcare system requires 1,500

donations each day to treat patients ranging from trauma victims to newborn babies and their mothers to cancer patients. Donors with type O and type B blood are especially needed as NYBC currently has a 1-2 day supply of these blood types. “With thousands of New Yorkers getting

vaccinated each day, we are thrilled to watch our state recover from this catastrophic year,” said Andrea Cefarelli, Senior Executive Director at New York Blood Center. “As New York bounces back in strides this spring, we need everyone to make an appointment and donate blood to help save lives. While the

AMERICANISM AWARDS - On Wednesday, May 5th 2021, the Amvets Auxiliary Post 18 participated in the statewide Amvet Americanism Contest for students in grades K – 12. Winners were chosen for each grade level who competed in different ways; either coloring the ﬂag, drawing a poster or higher grades wrote an essay on “What the American Flag means to me”. Due to Covid restrictions we were limited to have a drive by and not an awards ceremony. However, each child who placed 1st, 2nd, or 3rd received a certificate, an American ﬂag and cash award. National Fire Protection Association Says Use Caution When Using Grills According to the National Fire Protection Association, roughly half of the injuries involving grills are thermal burns. Of the approximately 16,600 patients who visit emergency rooms for injuries involving grills each year, 8,200 are treated for thermal burns. UPMC HealthBeat notes that thermal burns typically occur when a person touches ﬂames or fire or hot molten liquid or steam. Thermal burns also can result when touching a hot object, such as cooking pans, irons or heated

appliances. WebMD advises burn sufferers to call 911 immediately if the burn penetrates all layers of the skin; if the skin appears leathery or charred, with white, brown or black patches; or if the hands, feet, face, or genitals are burned. In addition, call 911 immediately if infants or seniors suffer any burns, even if the burn does not appear severe. Treatment will depend on the severity and location of the burn. In the immediate aftermath of a thermal burn, Stanford Children’s Health advises cooling the

affected area with cold water or a cold compress until the pain is reduced or alleviated. Avoid breaking any blisters that form, and protect the burn with a dry, sterile gauze bandage or with a clean bed sheet or cloth. Do not attempt to remove clothing that is stuck to the burned area. In such instances, cut around the clothing and leave the burn intact. Resist any temptation to apply ointments, oils or sprays to the burned area, as these should only be applied when prescribed by a doctor.
