Team to Debut New Flight Demo during its 18-minute performance. “We are excited to reveal a new routine to our supporters for the 2018 Air Show Season,” said Lead Solo Pilot Steve Salmirs, who choreographed the Skytypers’ new demonstration for the 2018 season. “There is more dynamic maneuvering from the various aircraft, additional interaction between the planes in the air show air space, and some surprise elements developed to enhance and highlight the aircraft and pilots’ capabilities. Our narration will continue to educate audiences as the team demonstrates military maneuvers taught and executed from WWII to present day. We look forward to seeing old friends and making new acquaintances at air shows
to hear comments about the new routine. We hope everyone will be pleased,” Salmirs added. The GEICO-sponsored team is known as the “Skytypers” because of its unique capability of creating giant messages in the sky when not performing in air shows. Flying five aircraft in a tight, line-abreast formation, the planes coordinate in typing dot matrix-style messages with environmentally friendly puffs of white smoke. A computer in the lead aircraft uses a customprogrammed tablet to send commands to the other planes via radio signals. The result is astonishing individual letters as tall as the Empire State Building generating messages that can be seen from 15 miles
away in any direction with 20-25 characters typed in less than two minutes. Flying demonstrations will begin at 10:00 a.m on Saturday and Sunday. The U.S. Navy Blue Angels and Royal Canadian Air Force Snowbirds will coheadline the air show that includes military and world-class civilian acts such as: the F-22 Raptor Demonstration Team, U.S. Army Golden Knights

The GEICO Skytypers Air Show Team returns for their 15thappearance at their hometown air show at Jones Beach. The team has prepared a new demonstration that will be performed during Bethpage Air Show at Jones Beachon May 26th27th. The 15thannual event will be hosted at Jones Beach State Park, which is one of the largest events for the NY State Parks Department. The homecoming show will be the sixth stop for the 2018 air show season for the squadron of World War IIera aircraft. The GEICO Skytypers fly six SNJs powered by 600-horsepower Pratt and Whitney engines. As WWII training aircraft, the SNJs were designed to perform all the maneuvers of fighter planes from the same era,

drop off children at their location to benefit from their organization; they also offer group programs, individual lessons, corporate workshops and a program specifically designed for military members. Volunteers are the backbone of PalO-Mine, and there are many different ways to get involved. Some ways you may volunteer are: working directly with children and adults in lessons, working with therapy horses and performing barn chores, fundraising, and helping with property enhancement and landscaping. Pal-O-Mine has two major fundraising events that are coming up in June. One is their 16th annual “Day at the Races,” which will be on June 8th at Belmont Racetrack. This is held the day before the Belmont Stakes and is a wonderful outing, offering lunch, a premium open bar and door prizes. Their 10th annual Golf Outing, “Par Fore the Horse,” will be held on June 25th at Southward Ho Country Club in Bay Shore. This will include golfing, brunch, course refreshments, an open bar, cocktail hour, dinner, gifts and prizes. Both of these events have sponsorship opportunities and are open to the public (tickets must be purchased). Another Organization YOU Can Become Involved With . . . Girls on the Run ~ Long Island
www.GOTRLongIsland.org Girls on the Run is an empowerment program for girls in third through eighth grade that inspires them to be joyful, healthy and confident, while using a fun, interactive curriculum that creatively integrates running. Meeting twice a week in small teams for the 10-week season, volunteer coaches teach girls life skills through engaging lessons and fun movement activities. At each season’s conclusion, all girls from teams across Long Island meet up for a celebratory 5K running event. Their Spring 5K will take place on June 2nd at Hofstra University. They are in need of volunteer coaches (no running experience is required) who have a desire to make an impact on the lives of young girls. All training is provided. They also need volunteers to help out at their upcoming 5K in the areas of: registration, hospitality, pre-run fun and course cheer. Anyone for Dessert? I have had my fair share of dining adventures through the years, most of which have since been reflected upon with a degree of amusement in hindsight. At the time, however, well let’s just say there are moments when our entire eating experience seemed to be part of a rather lengthy segment of Candid Camera. There was the time, while up in Saratoga Springs one summer years ago, that our meal was interrupted by a rather persistent fly. Upon swatting said flying creature, he began a free-fall into what had been - up to that point - a rather enjoyable pasta entree of my mother’s. As she watched, horrified, the formerly agile winged critter began what appeared to be a slow dog paddle through the sauce. Both my father and I were in complete hysterics by this point. When the waiter stopped by the table to check on whether we were enjoying the meal, my mother pointed to the at this point - motionless fly and replied, “Well, I was enjoying it very much, but…” The waiter, without missing a beat, shrugged
and remarked, “Oh yeah, that happens a lot - summer and all.” No offer of a replacement, no sympathy for the ruined meal, no nothing. The customer is always right, indeed. Of course, there are times when the customer seems obliged to seat him/herself, place the order and perhaps even head back into the kitchen to cook it as well, such is the poor quality of service. On the other end of the spectrum, I’ve been witness to a waitress literally sweeping a plate out from under my friend’s poised fork, determining that she was, in fact, finished. As we sat, incredulous over this turn of events, we didn’t know whether to laugh or demand a refund. After about two hours of nursing our drinks and “contemplating” dessert, more appetizers, perhaps a breakfast course… we decided to take the check. Oddly enough, the waitress didn’t seem amused. Fast forward to this past Cinco de Mayo, a “holiday” I have never made a special point to celebrate
aside from perhaps ordering a taco or two at a take-out restaurant. This year, my friend and I (different friend, same Candid Camera tendencies) decided to wait it out to dine in style at a genuine Mexican establishment on the busiest Saturday night of the year. After about an hour, we were seated. We ordered drinks, appetizers and entrees, all of which arrived in quick succession. Having already decided what we wanted for dessert, we patiently waited for the waiter to return. And waited…. And waited… Each time he passed our table, all attempts to make eye contact and flag him down went unnoticed. We were, we determined, completely invisible. Nearly an hour later, a random waitress happened to glance our way. Can we order dessert from you? Certainly. Nearly another 30 minutes elapsed before our own waiter, the one who had seemingly abandoned our table, returned. Dessert? We looked at each other. We had now been in this venue for precisely four hours. Cheers, indeed.

Lisa Gatti is the CEO & Founder of PalO-Mine Equestrian, Inc., a comprehensive therapeutic equine program that uses horses to facilitate growth, learning and healing for individuals with disabilities and for other vulnerable populations. Through persistence, hard work and a passion to serve others, Lisa opened Pal-O-Mine in 1995 as a 501(C)(3) non-profit. Pal-O-Mine grew from having two programs, eight horses and 80 students per week to 11 programs, 25 horses and 400 students per week - and they continue to grow today! This organization sits on eight acres, with a 20-stall barn, handicapped accessible bathrooms, a new 100’ x 120’ indoor arena with state-of- theart footing and a rider hoisting system, and three outdoor riding arenas. They help an unbelievable amount of people, and their work is truly heartwarming. Individuals of all ages are welcome to take part in the programs they offer. They operate with five full-time employees, 35 independent contractors and 80 volunteers a week. Their riding instructors have experience with the following diagnoses: Autism Spectrum Disorders, Anxiety Disorders, Sensory Processing Disorder, Attention Deficit Disorder, Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder, Neurological Disorders, Cerebral Palsy, Traumatic Brain Injury, Multiple Sclerosis, Down Syndrome, Spina Bifida, Genetic Disorders and Emotional Disturbances. A group of talented East Islip High School studentartists were chosen for display in the 15th annual 12x12 High School Art Exhibition, held from May 7th-16th. Sponsored by LIU Post, the competition asks students to create works of art that are 12 inches wide by 12 inches high. Chosen students
included Caitlin Breitenbecker, Kaylin Cuba, Julia Lambert, Christopher Palmer, Gia Piazza and Alicia Rodriguez for photography; and Eliza Channing, Hailee Cornell, Sabine Gebhard and Kevin Mesa for electronic illustration. “I’ve never had my artwork shown in a college exhibit, and it’s an honor,”
said Mesa. “The students selected for this exhibit have such excellent pieces, and I am so proud of their artwork,” said teacher Heather Toomey. “It is such a wonderful opportunity that LIU Post provides, exhibiting high school students in their gallery space.”

players a chance to shine as well as perform as a massed group. “The String Festival gives older students an opportunity to appreciate how far they’ve come as musicians, while giving younger students the
opportunity to see what they can become with practice,” said Vincent Green, director of fine and performing arts. “The opportunity to play as part of an orchestra of 200 caps off a singular musical event for the district.”

Office Chaplain Named On Thursday, April 26th, Suffolk County Sheriff Errol D. Toulon Jr. hosted a ceremony at the Yaphank Correctional Facility to officiate the Sheriff’s Office first group of uniformed Chaplains in its more than 330 year history of continuous service to the county’s residents. Among the uniformed Chaplains was Pastor
Daris A. Dixon-Clark of First Baptist Church of Bay Shore. Pastor DixonClark was dressed in full uniform and received his badge during the formal ceremony conducted by the Suffolk County Sheriff. Record Breaking Attendance The Long Island Council on Alcoholism and Drug Dependence, Inc. (LICADD) is pleased to announce that the 31st annual Adele C. Smithers Angel Ball, celebrating 62 years of “Recovery… One Step at a Time” was held on Monday, April 30, 2018 at the Garden City Hotel. The annual LICADD event raised over $350,000 to support LICADD’s substance abuse counseling and educational programs serving Long Islanders in Nassau and Suffolk Counties. LICADD was honored to host a record breaking number of guests and sponsors who
graciously believe in vital importance of the LICADD mission. More than 350 donors, community members, elected officials, treatment providers and their family members turned out to support LICADD and ensure that the agency’s life-saving addiction resources and recovery programs remain available to individuals and families across Long Island. LICADD Executive Director Steve Chassman stated, “LICADD is grateful for all of our generous donors and sponsors who support LICADD’s substance abuse prevention programs.
Sixty-two years ago R. Brinkley Smithers had a vision that all persons who suffer with addiction would have access to treatment. other in challenging feats of physical ability and endurance. Activities that got heartbeats racing included various relay races, including Kracken, Animal in the Bucket, Treasure Island, and Ship to Shore. It was an energizing experience for all and, as
expected, all of the teams had their share of wins and loses. This year, teachers won the night. Thanks to all of the teachers and students that participated as well as all of our gracious parents that volunteered to meet the challenge!

Animal Adaptations
Mrs. Rentkowicz and Mrs. Balsam’s third grade class at Gardiner Manor School has been studying animal adaptations in science. They used the late March snow to their advantage and incorporated it into
a Polar Bear adaptation experiment. The students covered their finger in Crisco to mimic polar bear blubber. By dunking an uncovered finger and a “fattened” finger into the snow,
students discovered that the blubber helped protect their finger against the cold environment. This messy hands-on experiment taught them why polar bears can survive in the frigid temperatures!

Recently, the students at Fifth Avenue School celebrated European Heritage Month with a culminating assembly. Mrs. Bertolino began the program with a greeting song that taught the students how to sing “hello, children” in many
different languages. The first and second graders then performed traditional folk dances, one from Denmark and one from France. The students were also treated to the music of Ireland, thanks to Fifth Avenue’s librarian, Mr.
Powers, who played his bagpipes while Kate Mattfeld performed an Irish step dance. The program concluded with a slideshow of beautiful scenes from places around Europe.

Escape Room Project
Satoko Matthews from the Culinary Arts Program at Suffolk County Community College recently visited the Culinary Careers class at Islip Career Center to give a demonstration on how to make traditional Japanese gyoza (dumplings). Chef Matthews made the dough for the dumpling wrappers; prepared two types of filling (vegetarian and pork); showed students the proper way to stuff, pleat and seal the wrappers; and then cook and serve the dumplings. She also demonstrated how to make the dipping sauce. Islip Career Center is an Eastern Suffolk BOCES
school that provides special career education services to students with special education needs. The skills they learn may enable them to obtain entry-level employment in certain fields. The students worked side-by-side with Chef Matthews in the kitchen as she progressed through each step of the demonstration, pointing out details and incorporating cultural information about Japanese cuisine. A threestep method known as fry-steam-fry is used to cook gyoza. The bottoms are seared in a shallow pan with oil, then steamed
after water is added and the pan is covered. Lastly, the lid is removed so they the remaining water cooks off and the gyoza fry for a second time. In Japan, it’s popular to serve gyoza upside down on a platter to highlight their crunchy brown bottoms. “Handson demonstrations from a professional who also incorporates background information into the lesson are great teaching vehicles for my students. They put their skills to use preparing something new, practiced following a recipe and learned about the history of the dish,” said Culinary Careers Teacher Barry Rosenthal.
The eleventh graders in Lindsay Schultz’s U.S. History class at the STEM High School recently created an escape room as part of a creative project after studying the Roaring Twenties and the Great Depression. The escape room mysteries to be solved employed skills from multiple high school subjects. The STEM High School is
part of the Eastern Long Island Academy of Applied Technology, the career and technical education program of Eastern Suffolk BOCES. To enter the escape room, students had to decode a word puzzle involving a quote from the Great Gatsby. Once inside, they had to utilize a physics reference sheet to perform a mathematical
calculation. Other challenges that followed led them to look inside the paper recycling bin in the room after reading, “Reform, Recovery and Relief” (part of FDR’s economic plan), which was hidden in a desk. A single piece of paper in the recycling bin contained a phone number. Participants dialed that number and the person who answered the phone talked about the stock market crash, providing the next clue. Students gradually worked their way around the room until they solved the last puzzle and found a key. Said, Justin Rosado, Connetquot CSD, “Creating an escape room for our classmates was a fun way to use everything we’ve learned in our classes, push ourselves to be smarter and to think up ways to challenge other people.”

Suffolk County Department of Health educator Robin Spencer recently offered pedestrian safety lessons to students in grades K-2 at Islip’s Wing Elementary School. The visit was a result of a New York State Highway Safety grant awarded to Wing by the department. Spencer spoke with
students in each Wing classroom, touching on topics such as crossing at the corner, wearing light colors at night and what to do when there is no sidewalk. “These lessons gave the students an opportunity to have direct instruction about pedestrian safety and the potential hazards near
roads,” said first-grade teacher Lisa Dieumegard. “We encourage the children to play outside, so we need them to be conscious of their surroundings and how to navigate the area around them. The lessons increased their awareness of the world around them.”

A Brentwood, New York, native and 2003 Ross Brentwood High School graduate is serving in Guam in the U.S. Navy aboard the expeditionary submarine tender, USS Emory S. Land. Petty Officer 2nd Class Sophia Jackson is an interior communications electrician aboard the Guam-based submarine tender, one of two submarine tenders in the U.S. Navy. The ship routinely deploys to protect alliances, enhance partnerships, and respond if a natural disaster occurs in the region. A Navy interior communications electrician is responsible for operating, coordinating, and performing organizational and intermediate maintenance on alarm, warning, and indicating systems. Jackson is proud to
With a crew of 42 officers and 600 enlisted, submarine tenders are 649 feet long and weigh approximately 23,493 tons. Their mission is to provide maintenance, repairs, hotel services, weapons reload and logistics support to deployed guided-missile and fastattack submarines. Both of the U.S. Navy’s submarine tenders are homeported in Apra Harbor, Guam, and rotate between deployment to support the forward-operating in the 5th and 7th Fleet areas of responsibility and in port in Guam to support in-port and visiting units. Submarine tenders are additionally capable of providing repair and logistic services to deployed surface ships. “Being forward deployed, I take it a day at a time and it is very rewarding when I get to go home and see my friends and family,” said Jackson. “It’s the cost for a better life. The Navy has made me more dedicated. I have more pride in what I do for my country. Being in the Navy is a confirmation in my work ethic.” As a member of one of the U.S. Navy’s most reliedupon assets, Jackson and other sailors know they are part of a legacy that will last beyond their lifetimes providing the Navy the nation needs. “Serving in the Navy means accelerating my life,” said Jackson.

Path of Hope Thirteen high school students from underrepresented school districts graduated from the HOPE (Health Occupations Partnership for Excellence) Program on May 8th. HOPE is a successful 2-year academic program that preps high school students from underrepresented school
districts and economically challenged backgrounds for the SATs and gives them exposure and experience in healthcare and related fields. Through classes and workplace shadowing experiences with Stony Brook faculty, they learn about the lives and skills it takes to be nurses, physicians, physical
therapists, laboratory technicians and other healthcare professions. This is the 10th HOPE graduation celebration, in which a total of 141 students have graduated and gone on to college in New York and around the country. Some have or will be entering healthcare fields.

student, enrolled in the Art, Design & Visual Communications Program received a Gold Medal for her First Place win in the New York State SkillsUSA
Advertising Design competition. The competition consisted of a written exam, assessing the general knowledge of advertising design and a skills performance portion. The competitor had to design an existing advertisement and develop a new creative design. Rebecca had to demonstrate her mechanical skills on the computer, understanding of advertising design industry terminology and concepts and demonstrate a professional presentation and technical execution of the comprehension within a specified amount of time. Rebecca will be attending the SkillsUSA National Skills & Leadership Conference in Louisville, Kentucky at the end of June competing against students from across the United States.
FOOD DRIVE HELD - Many families throughout Suffolk County rely on local pantries to help feed their families. Suffolk County Legislator Steven J. Flotteron along with members of the Islip Chamber hosted a food drive at Best Market on Rt. 111 over the weekend which collected an overwhelming amount of non-perishable goods. All donated items were distributed between Presbyterian Church of Islip.
