Kind, Obedient, Cheerful, Thrifty, Brave, Clean, and Reverent. But the attribute that isn’t included is “Perseverance,” or also called determination. Scouting has taught me to be determined and to never lose sight of my goals. My Eagle Scout Project definitely taught me that when it came down to the wire. Rain the day of my Eagle project was only one of the factors that threatened to spoil my chance of attaining Eagle. But, by being determined, I swiftly moved them aside and sought solutions to problems.” Chris went on to say, “Lessons I’ve learned from hard work and determination through Scouting are lessons that will aid me through the rest of life’s challenges. I expect that I am going to achieve practically everything I want in life. I have been in positions of responsibility before, but none have prepared me for life more than my Eagle project.” Chris is a 2012 Graduate of East Islip High School, where he was a student
at Suffolk Community in the Fall Semester, 2012, and currently finishing his Freshmen year as a student at SUNY Geneseo, NY. He is majoring in Accounting. During his high School year’s, Chris was a member of the Business Career Academy, was a member of the Photography Club during his Freshmen year and wrestled on the Varsity Wrestling Team during his Sophomore year. Chris was also a member of the East Islip Varsity Soccer Club for two seasons, where he earned the Scholar Athlete Award. He has also been the captain of his soccer team through the East Islip Soccer Club. Chris has worked as a referee for the East Islip Soccer Club, as well as working as a sales representative for Vector Marketing Corporation, the Rainbow Tent Rental Company, USA Petroleum and Convenience Store, Carleton Carwash, and Gino’s Pizzeria. Chris is the son of Patricia and John Rathbun of East Islip.

Christopher J. Rathbun successfully completed his Eagle Board of Review in November 2012, officially making him the 41st Eagle Scout of Troop 205 of Great River, East Islip, and Islip Terrace. Chris’ Eagle Court of Honor will be held on Saturday, June 1st, starting at 1 p.m. at Timber Point Elementary School, 200 Timberpoint Road in East Islip. Chris Rathbun is a member of Troop 205, sponsored by the Great River Fire Department, under the direction of Scoutmaster Mark Businski. On his road to Eagle, Chris has served the troop as Assistant Senior Patrol leader, Patrol Leader, and Troop Guide. Chris has had many unique Scouting experiences, including
many Long Island camping experiences and a Summer Camper at Boy Scout Camp Wakpominee, Ft. Anne, NY for five summer seasons. To become an Eagle Scout, the Scout must earn 21 Merit Badges, of which 12 are specifically Eagle required, progress through six rank advancements – from Tenderfoot, Second Class, First Class, Star, Life, then Eagle, and also plan, develop, and implement a major Service Project for the Community. The Service Project that Chris conducted with the assistance of his fellow Troop members was designing, developing, and implementing the house number painting on the curbs of 185 homes in the Country Village section of East Islip – as a way for first responders to quickly locate a home requiring immediate assistance. The house numbers were applied to the curb’s using stencils with reflective spray paint. As Chris reflects on his Scouting experience, he recently said, “A Scout is Trustworthy, Helpful, Friendly, Courteous,

For the second year in a row, 3rd through 5th grade students at South Country School had the opportunity to experience skateboarding as part of their Physical Education curriculum. The entire Skate Pass Program was purchased for the school by South Country’s PFA and included a curriculum guide, thirty student boards, two long boards, and all the necessary safety
equipment. Throughout the unit, students learned the basics of skateboarding, including its history, proper safety and stance, and even some exciting tricks such as rail grabs. The introduction of this unit has given students a chance to try something new and exciting in an ongoing effort to promote lifelong wellness and physical activity.

Trophy Winners has taken three years of hard work with a focus on developing continuity of keeping the team intact to develop a competitive team. The success in this year’s competition is the results of the many dedicated practice hours and steadfast commitment of the JROTC cadets and MSgt Perez. Academics are first and foremost a priority in AFJROTC. Almost one half of Brentwood’s JROTC students have made the Principal’s Honor Roll this year. Credit is also due to MSgt Richard Lochren and the work he has done with the Academic Challenge Team and Oratorical/ Briefing presentation Team they achieved first place wins in both of these events at this competition. The JROTC program at Brentwood has had a large number of students
in the past. This year, the program has 323 cadets and is the largest program on Long Island. Character Education and Citizenship are the common thread which binds the Brentwood Jr. ROTC and students are held to the high standards of self-discipline, ethics and moral behavior. Presently, the Brentwood Jr. ROTC has accumulated 3,588 hours of community service this year. Events included. Red Cross Blood Drive, Relay for Life, Breast Cancer Walk at Jones Beech, Keep Islip Clean projects, School beautification, Kindergarten Chaperone Bus run, Gary Mintz Memorial Scholarship, Pancake Breakfast & Run, Coat & Can Good Drives, and American Legion & Veteran outreach programs to mention a few.

Brentwood High School Jr. AFROTC sets new personal record of 10 ten trophies ever received in a multi-service drill competition for Brentwood since the ROTC program was established in 1973. On Saturday April 27th, Brentwood’s Fighting Falcon competed in their final Joint Service Drill competition at Bridgeton High School, Bridgeton NJ, against 20 JROTC high schools units from the Tristate area. The Drill Team participated in 12 events and earned 10 trophies! This breaks their previous record of six trophies. Major credit is owed to Master Sergeant (MSgt) Ray Perez who is the coach of the Drill & Rifle Team. The Drill Team was in desperate need of leadership and mentorship prior to MSgt Perez joining the Brentwood staff. It

Carrying each class’s environmental banners, John F. Kennedy Elementary School students enjoyed some fresh air and sunshine during the school’s annual Earth Day Walk on May 3rd. Joining them on the trek down Woodland Drive and back through the playground were JFK Principal Aileen O’Rourke, teachers and staff members, as well as parents, friends, preschoolers in strollers, bicyclists and several puppies. The event could not be
held on Earth Day itself (celebrated worldwide on April 22nd) due to testing schedules, but the bright May weather kept everyone in the right spirit. “Every day is Earth Day at JFK,” explained O’Rourke. “We stress the importance of taking care of our planet and we urge students to reduce, reuse and recycle.” After the walk was complete, the crowd gathered by the back of the school. Three JFK students – Kendall Bensen, Sadia Malik and Phoebe McCann – performed a

Developmental Disabilities Institute (DDI), the leading service provider for children and adults with autism on Long Island, will be dancing for a cause during Autism Awareness Month. Adults served by DDI will be partnering up with students of Vic D’Amore’s American Studio of Performing Arts to produce Dancing for Autism 2, Broadway Nights at 7 p.m. on Friday, June 7th at the Kings Park High School Auditorium. Tickets will be sold at $10 general admission or $7 for senior citizens and children under 12 to benefit DDI’s Adult Day Program. There will also be a special advance ticket package for $25 that will include special seating, a commemorative DVD of last year’s event, candy and custom event program. DDI’s Day Programs serve adults with developmental disabilities and autism at seven locations throughout Suffolk County. Day programs assist adults served by DDI with education, personal skills

Sunshine & Socializing By: Jamie Lynn Ryan As I sit here on deadline, writing my column at the eleventh hour – as usual – is it wrong that the only thought I have is how I would rather be lying on the beach, soaking up the sun, on this fine spring day? Nothing against work – it just tends to conflict with the nice weather, you know? Sure, summer isn’t even officially underway yet, but the signs are everywhere. Concert schedules are out, vacations are being planned, baseball is in full swing – before you know it, it will be time to break out the
BBQ and open the pool for the first summer soiree. School? Work? Eh, plenty of time for that in the winter. Now it’s just a matter of coordinating all those fun summer plans, which is often easier said than done. Is it just me, or has it become increasingly difficult to set anything in stone? No matter the amount of advance notice, things always seem to fall through at the last second. Me, when I make plans, I stick with them. Barring an unexpected emergency, there is really no legitimate reason to cancel on someone. Call it a pet peeve, but there’s nothing worse
than looking forward to something only to have it cancelled. Kind of makes you not want to even bother. It’s almost better to play it by ear, see how it goes… and if things fall into place – great. If not, at least you didn’t waste your time getting your hopes up, right? I think that will be my mantra for this summer. Nice and relaxing. No stress, no aggravation, just enjoyment. And if, when all is said and done, that means lying on the beach by myself…so be it. I can think of worse things. See ya on the sand!

Islip Middle School student Christian Muller has been honored for his exemplary volunteer service with a state-level Certificate of Excellence from the 2013 Prudential Spirit of Community Awards Program. Presented annually by Prudential Financial in partnership with the National Association of Secondary School Principals, the Prudential
Spirit of Community Awards honor young people across America for outstanding community service activities. Christian was honored for his volunteer work in protecting the environment. He is a member of the Keep Islip Clean club and a founding member of the 4H Cornell Cooperative Extension club and participates in various beach and wetland
cleanups. Through his award, Christian received a congratulatory letter from President Barack Obama. In the letter, President Obama wrote, “Your volunteer service demonstrates the kind of commitment to your community that moves America a step closer to its great promise.”

from East Islip Middle School. The program’s aim is to promote and encourage proper environmental ideals. Baranek’s creation and other winning posters will be displayed on the third floor of the Town of Islip’s 401 Main Street
building during the month of May. She also received a certificate of recognition along with a $50 gift card, and was honored at the Town of Islip’s annual Earth Day Celebration on April 27th in Sayville.

The East Islip PTA hosted its annual Meet The Candidate Night at the district’s Early Childhood Center on May 1st. Steven Behan and Jessica Carney, the two candidates seeking the open board seat in the upcoming May 21 election, were both in attendance to share their thoughts and views, and community members in attendance had the chance to question the candidates
for approximately one hour. Meet the Candidate Night is a nonpartisan PTAsponsored event designed to inform the East Islip community about the candidates running for this elected position. Voting will take place this year on Tuesday, May 21st from 6 a.m. to 9 p.m in the Early Childhood Center. “I thank Mr. Behan and Mrs. Carney for taking the

Teacher Gregory Kguloian’s sophomore English language arts classes held a friendly competition in March, aptly titled Beware The Ides Of March! This “intelligence contest” involved two “tribes” of students locked in intellectual combat for academic survival, going head-to-head in a questionbased battle of wits. The game’s questions were created, delivered and answered by members of two tribes, each organized into two rows. The front line of each tribe consisted of a “chief,” a “second in command” and a
“connection” to the second row, who had access to notes and study guides. The front-row students depended on those in the back row to serve as their experts, and the entire group worked together to answer their opponents’ challenging questions. “This was all set up to reflect the dynamics in the William Golding novel ‘Lord of the Flies,’” explained Kguloian. “The students taught each other lessons through fun and games, and also learned to defend a ‘civilization’ of their own making.” Noting that
the intelligence contest proved to be an excellent educational experience for his “tribes,” Kguloian gave kudos to the dedication of the participating students. “They organized themselves efficiently, divided up the work and established a ‘brain battle’ plan to ensure success,” he added. “Our pupils are truly devoting so much energy and passion to learning from literature and making real-life applications to show what they know.” Photo by: Greg Fasolino, Syntax
Bay Shore South Country School students are celebrating Earth Day this year by doing their part to Reduce, Reuse and Recycle. South Country teacher Ms. Keish Bolling told her students, “Our planet Earth takes care of us by supplying all of the things we need, including fresh air to breathe, water to drink and a wide variety of foods. Consequently we must take care of our world!”

Racing toward a bright future, East Islip High School senior and undefeated League III cross-country champion Niamh Ashe signed a National Letter of Intent on March 19th to attend Quinnipiac University in Hamden, Conn., where she will be a member of the university’s Bobcats cross-country and track teams. “The coach is nice and the running program at Quinnipiac is amazing,” she said. “They are Division I, and I am really excited to run with such fast girls.” The athletes’ prowess isn’t the only thing Ashe admired about Quinnipiac, which was founded in 1929 and is known for its strong business and health science programs and the famous Quinnipiac University Polling Institute. “It’s gorgeous up there,” said Ashe, who plans to study nursing. “The atmosphere is great and it’s such a pretty school.” Among the highlights of the All-County runner’s season were a fourthplace finish (out of 45 contestants) in the 2-mile race at the New Balance Nationals for winter track, a second-place overall

Sweet Season It was a “sweet” season for the East Islip High School mock trial team, beginning with a three-school scrimmage in Brooklyn (with members of both the Sheepshead Bay and Brooklyn Tech mock trial teams) and a February 6th victory over Half Hollow Hills East in the opening round of the New York State High School Mock Trial Tournament, also known as the “Sweet Sixteen.” East Islip’s defense – lawyers Alexa Dante, Elizabeth Loizides and Brooke Ryan and witnesses Kevin Capobianco, Christina Giordanella and Joe Teknus – prevailed against the Hills East plaintiff team. East Islip next defeated bitter rivals Smithtown on February 13th at the East Islip High School library in the second round of the tournament. Their winning case against Smithtown, “Morgan Martin v. Cattaraugus Programming University,” involved a fictitious plaintiff contending that she was unemployed and in debt after attending Cattaraugus Programming University, a for-profit college. The plaintiff claimed that CPU uses deceptive acts and practices to get students to enroll and predatory lending tactics to get students to borrow high-interest student loans, while providing a worthless education. The defense denied these allegations and claimed that the plaintiff was a lazy student who didn’t work hard. “This fact pattern comes right out of today’s headlines, with many students around the country claiming they were deceived by for-profit colleges.” The EI defense team against Smithtown included
lawyers Melissa Gallardo, Zach Purdy and Bob Rosenthal; witnesses Tim Cerrito, Mustafa Kemal and Kierstin O’Hara; and bailiff Ashley Brett. “Our students really enjoyed that case because they could relate to it,” added Lester. “They have been thinking about college and
careers, and issues such as choosing a school and how to handle loans are very much on their minds. It also caused a lot of discussion about what it takes to succeed in college.” The team paid an unsuccessful visit to St. Anthony High School for the third round on February 27th, and the controversial loss left East Islip at risk of missing the playoffs. The fourth and final case of the tournament was held at home in the high school’s library on March 6th against Kings Park, as East Islip’s plaintiff team fought through adversity to deliver a win. A key plaintiff member for EI,
attorney Gallardo, was suddenly unable to compete due to illness, but the team’s two seniors stepped up to fill her role. Plaintiff attorney Purdy took over Gallardo’s opening statement while defense attorney Dante rapidly learned her stricken teammate’s direct and cross examinations, and freshman O’Hara adapted quickly to working with a new lawyer. “Zach and Alexa showed excellent leadership and rallied the rest of the team,” said Lester. “The whole team pulled together and delivered the necessary win for EI.” Also participating were attorney Rosenthal, witnesses Cerrito and Kemal, and bailiff Brett. The victory raised the team’s record to 3-1, securing their 11th consecutive playoff spot. During the mock trial playoffs in district court, East Islip ended up losing to Northport High School in the Suffolk County quarterfinals. “The match was extremely close and the judge praised all participants,” Lester said. “While the loss was unexpected and disappointing, the East Islip team’s performance was exceptional and they went out strong.” Six members of the EI mock trial team also traveled to Plainview-Old Bethpage High School for their annual Moot Court Competition on March 20th. Two teams of three students each participated in four rounds of mini civil trials. Team 1 featured Capobianco, Cerrito and Rosenthal and Team 2 included Brett, Dante and Ryan. “Both teams did a great job,” said Lester. “The event was a fun learning experience.”
