A chorus of cheers and bagpipers could be heard as patients with ALS (amyotrophic lateral sclerosis, or Lou Gehrig’s disease) rode onto the Stony Brook University Campus in their power wheelchairs at the annual Ride for Life event. Stony Brook University athletes escorted the Riders who rode to Stony Brook to take part in the Pinwheel Remembrance Ceremony on May 2nd, the cornerstone event of the 12-day power wheelchair Ride for Life trek across Long Island that ends in Manhattan on May 9th. Christopher Pendergast,
President and Founder of Ride for Life, and a 22-year ALS patient and advocate, led the way with six other ALS patients as they rode to the ceremony area, where 6,000 pinwheels were displayed. The pinwheels symbolize the lives lost to ALS each year. At the Pinwheel Remembrance Ceremony, the names of 90 patients lost to ALS were read aloud. The 90 names, requested by their family members to be read, also represent the fact that every 90 minutes someone dies from ALS. A candle was lit for each individual in their memory. Brook Medicine gathered with the family and friends of patients to celebrate hope – as symbolized by the pinwheels that a cure for ALS is ‘blowin in the wind.’ “ALS is a remarkable challenge to physicians and neuroscientists, but this is an exciting time in the Neurosciences and through research we continue to seek better treatments and hopefully a cure,” said Kenneth Kaushansky, MD, Senior Vice President, Health Sciences, and Dean of the Stony Brook University School of Medicine. “We are all here today to join together in hope and strive to make ALS a tragedy of the past.” During the ceremony, a $60,000 donation was announced to the Ride for Life on behalf of the ALS Association, Greater New York Chapter. The funds will be used to support clinical services and research at Stony Brook’s Christopher Pendergast ALS Center of Excellence, the only ALS Associationcertified center on Long Island. Keynote speaker Al Jordan, a Ride for Life committee member and Associate Dean of Student & Minority Affairs in the School of Medicine, had attendees join hands as a sign of unity to fight against ALS and hope for a cure. A recitation prayer by the Reverend Rich Allen of Sayville United Methodist Church added to the spirit of hope at the event. The ceremony closed with a jolt into the sky – as a 16-rocket launch salute took place. The “spirit salutes,” as they were referred to, symbolized the 16 lives lost to ALS every day.

I Did The Grid On Saturday, May 23rd, the eighth annual Cpl Christopher G. Scherer “I Did the Grid” 4 Mile Competitive Run, 1 Mile Fun Run, and 4 Mile Recreational Run / Walk will be taking place on the streets of East Northport. On July 21st, 2007, Christopher Schererm who was a Corporal in the Marine Corpsm lost his life while serving our Country in the Al Anbar Province of Iraq. He was born and raised in East Northport and grew up playing in the neighborhood that he fondly referred to as ‘The Grid.’ On the first day of
Memorial Day weekend, participants of all ages can experience four miles of the [grid] streets of East Northport while running, jogging or walking from the starting and ending location at Pulaski Road School. High School Law Day
Bay Shore’s rich history provided the subject matter for Bay Shore High School’s annual Law Day mock trial competition held on April 23rd. Students tried negligence cases “loosely” based on George Washington’s historic visit to Sagtikos Manor, a hot coffee spill at Entenmanns’s Bakery, and a fall at a video shoot by famous rapper and ex-Bay Shore resident LL Cool J. Eighteen teams of three students each performed their roles as lawyers and witnesses before attorneys from Bay Shore, Brightwaters, and neighboring communities. The attorneys served as judges for the competition and mentors as they
provided the students with advice on proper trial techniques, the rules of evidence, and how to better frame arguments to become more forceful advocates. For the first time we had an all sophomore final round. Students Gen Bryant, Emily Swain, and Sabrina Song earned first place honors. In second place was the team of Katie Barba, Helena Schnorr, and Caroline Fallon. The third place team consisted of seniors Bailey Spahn, Miriam Joseph, and Sharon Ahmed. In fourth place was the junior team of Damian Bianco, Justin Kehati, and Muaz Chaudray. Judges for the competition were local
attorneys Steven Askinas, Esq., Jack Finnerty, Esq., Timothy Finnerty, Esq., Ellen Kluepfel, Esq., John Lawlor, Esq., Nick Santomartino, Esq., Thomas Telesca, Esq., Tammy Trees, Esq. and Maria Zouros, Esq. As an element of the Social Studies Department’s Law Program, Law Day is organized by teacher and former practicing attorney Jeanne-Marie Marziliano. Assistance was provided by Joseph Lemke, Director of Social Studies, K-12 and John Selzer, Bay Shore High School’s mock trial coach. Next year’s Law Day is expected to be held on April 21st, 2016.

Parade Set The Memorial Day Parade in East Islip, pays tribute to the pride, sacrifice and service of America’s Veterans. Memorial Day, which was originally known as Decoration Day, has a
history stretching back to the Civil War and serves as an important reminder of those who died in the service of their country. This year’s parade begins at 10 a.m. on Monday, May 25th, at the Intersection of
Greenwood Ave, East Islip/ Main Street, and heads West to Islip Town Hall. Parade Grand Marshall’s, James Zaun, and Miriam Woodward are being recognized for their service.
LITTLE LEAGUE KICKOFF - Opening Day recently kicked off for members of the Little League of the Islips. They joined the White Sox AAA team as they began another highly anticipated season of baseball. Islip Town, in conjunction with the Sayville Chamber of Commerce, held its annual Earth Day Celebration on Saturday, April 25th, at Gillette Park in Sayville. This year marked the 25th anniversary of the everpopular celebration. Islip Town Supervisor Angie Carpenter and members of the Islip Town Board joined hundreds of residents in attendance to celebrate the day. Board Members also presented students with Town of Islip Certificates of Recognition for winning the Earth Day Drawing contest. “Our Earth Day Celebration is truly a great day for residents and businesses to come out and get involved in beautifying
our Town. In addition, there is something for everyone to enjoy,” said Islip Town Supervisor Angie M. Carpenter. “It’s a fun-filled day that helps encourage our community to take responsibility for the protection of our environment and to dedicate ourselves to a cleaner and greener Town.” The annual Earth Day celebration has always been a free celebration that attracts hundreds of families and residents. This year’s celebration featured mascots WRAPIT and SORT-IT, a flag ceremony, live musical performances from Nexus and other local musicians, educational workshops and over 65 local vendors. The event also showcased demonstrations from local companies including a solar panel company called GreenLeaf, which displayed a solar paneled mini house at eight feet wide, twenty feet long and thirteen feet high. Visitors could walk through and experience solar paneled living. A&A Sewer and Drain Maintenance had a display of an Aerobic Treatment Unit (ATU) which helps treat the wastewater from the septic tanks in an earth-friendly manner.

DEPT HONORED - The Brentwood Fire Department Annual Inspection and Installation of Officers was recently held. Town Officials presented William Feeley and Javier Valentin with Town of Islip Citations. Mr. Feeley is an Ex-Chief and Past Commissioner and still a valued and active member of the Brentwood Fire District. He’s been a member of the Brentwood Fire Department for the past 57 years. Mr. Valentin is the Outgoing Chief of the Brentwood Fire Department. He joined the department in 1996 and has served as the Chief since 2013.

The Museum of American Armor at Old Bethpage Village Restoration, 1303 Round Swamp Road, Old Bethpage becomes an embattled European countryside of 1945 during the weekend of May 17th and 18th between 10 a.m. and 4 p.m. as World War II armor advances down country lanes and living historians maneuver across open fields before thousands of visitors during the 70th anniversary of the end of that epic conflict. Admission is $10 for adults, $7 for seniors and veterans and children between the ages of 5 and 12. Active duty military personnel with I.D. are admitted for free. Presentations will include tactical military exercises, displays of period weapons and an armor parade that includes a Sherman tank, armored cars and halftracks.
A memorial service will be held at Noon on both Saturday and Sunday to honor all American servicemen and women who have given their lives in the defense of freedom. Nassau County Executive Edward P. Mangano stated, “The ability to create an armored column that replicates the sights and sounds of American forces during World War II is one of the most compelling educational tools we have to recount the story of our G.I.s’ courage, valor and sacrifice. Of Memories Made & Yet To Come By: Jamie Lynn Ryan As I get ready to head off to a dear friend’s graduation on this fine spring afternoon, I am reminded of a similarly lovely day 11 years ago when I donned a cap and gown to receive my BFA in Journalism from C.W. Post. The four years spent on that sprawling campus in Upper Brookville were full of fond memories… reading Leaves of Grass on the lawn in front of the Philosophy building, strolling through the Chipmunk Trail on the way to class, lounging on the Great Lawn with friends, studying in the Honors
Lounge, aimlessly wandering through the library’s book stacks... Being a commuter student, the challenge was always to assimilate into campus life, a task made much easier by my involvement in the Honors Program. Many a day was spent planning events, fundraising, working on our very own newsletter, The Athena, and networking with the best and the brightest administrators, professors and students. Perhaps the greatest benefit, though, was the lasting friendships made within the walls of that lounge, those forged on the first day of
Freshman Seminar that have endured until today, 15 years later. As a junior and senior, I was fortunate enough to serve as a Peer Mentor, leading my very own Freshman Seminar classes, and bearing witness to the next generation of blossoming friendships. Which brings me back to today, as one of those “first friends” prepares to accept a Masters Degree on the very same campus, under the big tent on the famed Great Lawn, and sets out to embark on the next stage of her career. What an exciting moment, what a memorable journey… one that, in so many ways, is just beginning.

Volunteers Needed The Jimmy Fund is looking for local movie lovers with big hearts and a few spare hours to help raise money for cancer care and research at DanaFarber Cancer Institute this summer. The Jimmy Fund/Variety Children’s Charities Theatre Collections Program is seeking volunteers to pass collection canisters to guests in the below Holtsville movie theatres following a brief Jimmy Fund trailer that will be shown before a feature film. Island 16 Cinema de Lux at 185 Morris Avenue
Volunteers are needed during select movie times each day of the week from June 12th to July 30th at theaters in Massachusetts, Rhode Island, Connecticut, New York, New Jersey, and Ohio. All contributions go directly to the Jimmy Fund, which supports lifesaving adult and pediatric patient care and cancer research at Dana-Farber. Now in its 66th year, the program launched in 1949 and is the Jimmy Fund’s oldest annual fundraising effort. Since its inception the program has raised more than $30 million. In its early years, the Theatre
Program attracted the support of such legendary stars including James Cagney, Loretta Young, Bing Crosby, and baseball’s Ted Williams. Volunteers can earn exciting incentives, depending on how much time they commit to the program. These range from a volunteer t-shirt, to complimentary National Amusements movie passes, to Blue Man Group or Boston Red Sox tickets!
