Golf Classic Set increase awareness of the importance of physical activity. This event provides an excellent networking opportunity while promoting exercise and physical activity. This year’s event will honor Louis C. Grassi, CPA, CFE, Grassi & Co. The American Heart Association is excited to announce that the Tennis Classic will once again be a part of the

The LIU Post Chamber Music Festival is available on a noncredit basis or participants may elect to earn undergraduate or graduate credits for participation. High school students may earn college credit through the High School Enrichment Program. The Festival, one of the region’s premier musical events, will be held July 11th to 29th at LIU Post. The primary focus of the Festival is the study and performance of standard instrumental chamber music, including string quartets, woodwind quintets, and mixed chamber ensembles. Also included are a series of instrumental and performance master classes, a concerto competition, chamber orchestras, and a series of public concerts at Hillwood Recital Hall and Tilles Center for the Performing Arts featuring The Pierrot Consort and guest artists; the Festival Chamber Orchestra and chamber music performed by Festival Participants. The Festival also includes musicianship classes, individual master classes, chamber music performance classes and a conducting program – an overview of conducting and rehearsal techniques, score study, musical style, and full orchestral and chamber orchestral repertoire. Conducting participants attend master classes, receive training with the Conductors’ Ensemble and actively observe rehearsals of the Festival Chamber Orchestra. The non-refundable application/audition fee is $40. Festival fees and tuition vary with scheduled participation and programs. She lists going to the county championships the last three years as the highlight of her East Islip tennis tenure. Islip Town Supervisor Angie Carpenter was recently joined by local middle-school students at the beginning of the 2016 Youth in Government Day, which is sponsored by Elks Lodge 2533 of Islip. Supervisor Carpenter introduced the students to the basics of town government, before answering questions on her job and the role that government plays in everyday life. After these brief
remarks, the students were led on a tour of several Town facilities. In the past, students have visited the Recycling Center and Waste Energy Facility, and this year they were given a tour of the Town’s Compost Facility in Ronkonkoma. The students watched as yard waste and other organic material was converted into compost and mulch, which is then sold to companies and given out to residents at designated Town sites.
Following the Compost Facility, the group was driven to the MacArthur Airport Fire and Rescue Department, where employees demonstrated the equipment that will be used in the event of an emergency. The students were able to see the hose trucks in action, and were given a chance to climb aboard the trucks and get a feel for what it’s like to serve as a first responder at MacArthur Airport.
In advance of Holocaust Remembrance Day, East Islip High School sophomores in Gregory Kguloian’s English Language Arts class recently finished reading the nonfiction book “Night,” by Elie Wiesel, a painful and haunting memoir of what the author endured during the Holocaust. The book ends with the liberation of the concentration camp where 16 year-old Wiesel was held prisoner. According to Kguloian, his students are approximately the same age as Wiesel was, which increased their empathy and made the real-life story all the more relevant to them. “Kids today are
extremely empathetic and well aware that groups such as ISIS are the most recent scourge to threaten civilization as we know it,” said Kguloian. “However, my students have come to understand Edmund Burke’s statement that all that is necessary for evil to succeed is for good men to do nothing. In their understanding of the gravitas of Wiesel’s book, they showed true appreciation and sincere sympathy, which really filled me with pride and the belief that this generation is probably the best since the Greatest Generation, who lived during the time period that they just read about. It is important for our young people today to be able to connect with
those who came before us and to truly appreciate what some people have gone through to better appreciate our place in the timeline of humanity.” After the class finished reading “Night,” they were introduced to related and connected artifacts from the same time period to help make the era more tangible. This included a review of several journals written by teenagers who lived – and in some cases, died – during the Holocaust. “This was a great lesson and an awesome resource for Mr. Kguloian’s students,” said Principal Bill Brennen. “No wonder they do so well, with all that information at their fingertips.”

Hoops for Hope The student government at East Islip Middle School hosted a fun-filled, charity 3-on-3 basketball tournament, “Hoops for Hope,” to support the Special Olympics of New York and celebrate the school’s March Madness Spirit Week. In total, 101 students on 23 teams
participated in the March 23 event, which raised $298 for Ronald McDonald House. Serving as master of ceremonies was middle school teacher and basketball coach Chris Padgur, who worked tirelessly with the student government to plan the
event. More than 20 prizes were raffled to attendees, and each member of the winning “Social Anxiety” team – Ahmed Abdelbaky, Thomas Boyd, Pat Collerex, Cody Goldsmith and Christian Hard – received a $10 Applebee’s gift card.
Students from the Supermarket Warehouse Occupations and Carpentry Programs at Islip Career Center recycled empty bottles so they could adopt “Hulk” a rescued Loggerhead Sea Turtle that had been injured by a boat. recycled empty bottles over the course of six months and we sent the money over to the Riverhead Foundation.” The recycling project at ICC is on-going and has helped fund a number of causes. Abel said, “We are always looking for ways to engage and encourage the students to give back to the community.” The blue recycling bins that are placed throughout ICC are fitted with blue wooden covers created by students in the carpentry program.
Carpentry Teacher Joe Postiglione said, “Students in the Carpentry Program made the blue covers so that they fit the bins perfectly. When students and staff drop empty bottles in, they stay in the bins, and don’t spill out onto the floor.” The Riverhead Foundation for Marine Research and Preservation were grateful for the donation and presented the students with Certificates of Adoption for their support.

Stamping Out Hunger Island Harvest Food Bank and the National Association of Letter Carriers (NALC) are again joining forces for the 24th-annual Stamp Out Hunger campaign on Saturday, May 14th as part of the nation’s largest single-day food drive. Postal carriers throughout Nassau and Suffolk counties will collect nonperishable food items left by caring Long Islanders who want to be part of the solution in ending hunger in our communities. All food collected will benefit
Island Harvest in providing supplemental food support to the more than 316,000 Long Islanders at risk of going hungry every day. Participation in the Stamp Out Hunger food drive is simple. Residents are asked to leave nonperishable food items such as canned goods, pasta, rice, boxed juices and shelf-stable milk (please, no glass items) next to their mailboxes before regularly scheduled mail delivery on Saturday, May 14, 2016. The postal carriers will do the
rest. Food donated will help replenish food supplies at Long Island’s food pantries, soup kitchens and other feeding programs served by Island Harvest. “The longstanding partnership we have forged with the NALC, the United States Postal Service, and our corporate partners is making a difference in providing much-needed food to the scores of men, women and children who often don’t know when their next meal will be,” said Randi

The U.S. Navy Blue Angels will give the final performance of the show at approximately 2 p.m. The Royal Canadian Air Force Snowbirds will be making their 3rd performance at the Bethpage Air Show where they will perform over 50 different formations and maneuvers for fans. Breitling Jet Team, the world’s elite professional civilian jet aerobatics team, returning to Long Island for their second consecutive performance following a successful performance last year. The new United States Air Force F-35 Lightning II, the world’s most advanced multi-role fighter aircraft, will also perform at the Bethpage Air Show for the first time in its inaugural year its F-35 Heritage Flight performance. The F-35 Heritage Flight performance will feature the F-35 flying alongside WWII, Korean and Vietnamera aircraft in a dynamic display of our nation’s air power history. With a top speed of 1,200 mph, the F-35 is capable of setting off sonic booms as it did this past January for all of the East Coast to experience! Laptop Lab experiment with coding software to simulate an animation of an amusement park ride lasting for 15 seconds, with two separate functions occurring simultaneously so that the ride simulation would move and the seat would rotate and stop where it started. Once students created the code and moved the animation to their individual laptops, they were able to connect their computers and try it out on an actual small model of the amusement park ride. “This took a lot of careful work and testing and
revising of the program, but students were able to see the behind-the-scenes work and careful coding that creates a safe, costeffective and entertaining ride,” said Hall. “Here at Islip High School, we are continuing to find ways to engage and excite students in different career paths,” said Christiansen. “The Islip staff is eternally grateful to the Army and A+ Mobile Solutions for bringing this amazing engineeringand technology-based opportunity to our students.”
East Islip High School’s theater students pulled out all the stops in three bravura performances of this year’s school musical, “Pippin,” delighting audiences who attended on March 31st, April 1st and April 2nd. A Tony Award winner that debuted on Broadway in 1972, “Pippin” was written by Stephen Schwartz from a book by Roger O. Hirson, with additional contributions from original director Bob Fosse. The musical’s performance troupe, led by a Leading Player, tell the story of the young prince Pippin and his search for the meaning of life. East Islip’s production starred Jon Sawyer Coffin as Leading Player, Michael Robert Krebs as Pippin, Jack Burke-McGoldrick as
Charles, Noelia Vazquez as Fastrada, Caleb Shulman as Lewis, Meg Tohill as Berthe, Danielle Pafundi as Catherine and Roy Anderson as Theo. The U.S. Army and members of Farmingdale State College’s A+ Mobile STEM lab facilitated a STEM Army Day at Islip High School on April 18th. With the help of Dr. Matthew Christiansen, the high school’s science and business chairperson, and guidance counselor Nicole Hall, more than 150 technology and engineering students participated in the event, working throughout the day with an exciting handson mobile engineering and coding lab. Throughout the lab, students were able to

ALICE ON STAGE - The YMCA Boulton Center for the Performing Arts recently hosted the YMCA Act Out student production of Disney’s Alice in Wonderland, Jr. The production featured many songs from the thrilling animated motion picture. The show put on was a fast paced version of the classic tale that pleased the entire crowd. The cast and crew put in many hours to make this production a possibility.
Amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS) strikes people between the ages of 40 and 70, and approximately 20,000 Americans can have the disease at any given time, according to the ALS Association. It is also referred to as Lou Gehrig’s disease because the baseball great was stricken with it. To help try to combat this progressive neurodegenerative disease that affects nerve cells in the brain and the spinal cord, Islip students, teachers, family members and friends are holding the second annual Islip Family
Run for ALS Research, Saturday, May 21st, at 9 a.m. Last year, hundreds ran (or walked) a mile around the Islip school track, raising money to fight this debilitating disease. This worthwhile event brought together competitors running a six-minute mile, students joining with their sports teams, and spectators cheering from the sidelines. Businesses and organizations showed their support, while teachers, staff and even the principal gallantly volunteered to sit in the dunk tank. All proceeds will be
donated to the Packard Center, a research center at Johns Hopkins University dedicated to finding a cure for ALS and to the Ride for Life Foundation, a local group that raises money for research and patient care. Merging glamor and giving, East Islip’s For the Kids Foundation held its 19th annual Black Tie Gala on April 9th, honoring Paula Caylor, the East Islip School District’s secretary to the superintendent, as Educator Advocate of the Year, and Kurt Bohlsen of Bohlsen
Restaurant Group as Community Advocate of the Year. The Gala, whose theme this year was “Mystique,” is the FTK organization’s premier fundraising event to benefit students in the district, donating more than $1 million for educational programs since its formation. Community and local business members in attendance at Villa Lombardi’s in Holbrook were entertained by a jazz band of student-musicians from East Islip High School, directed by Christopher Neske. Caylor, a Bay Shore native and alumna of Bay Shore High School, married her husband Rick soon after graduation, and they have two sons, Keith and Ken. She began her career as a secretary and bookkeeper for an accounting firm. After 24 years, the firm’s owner retired and she switched to public education, starting as a paraprofessional for two years in the Bay Shore School District. Caylor accepted a position with the East Islip School District in 2002, and serves as the secretary for both Superintendent John V. Dolan and the district’s childcare program. She has helped organize numerous events for both the district and FTK during her 14 years as an integral member of the East Islip staff. Bohlsen and his family own and operate the Bohlsen Restaurant Group. He is among the third generation of the Bohlsen family to carry on their traditions of hospitality
and community service. He began his education in the East Islip School District, attending through ninth grade. After attending Choate Rosemary Hall preparatory school in Connecticut, he returned to graduate from East Islip High School. He earned a bachelor’s degree in hospitality administration from Boston University, and went on to open acclaimed restaurants including Prime and Harbor Club at Prime in Huntington, Monsoon in Babylon, H20 in Smithtown, and Verace, Tellers and Pizza Parm in Islip. He and his family have hosted and contributed their efforts to numerous fundraising efforts for Southside Hospital and causes from breast cancer to Superstorm Sandy. Bohlsen currently resides in East Islip with his wife Oriana, a mathematics educator, and daughter Hannah, who attends East Islip Middle School. Caylor and Bohlsen both received proclamations from local lawmakers in attendance, State Sen. Testing Program Suffolk County Community College’s Women’s Softball is on a 25 game win streak in and first in the National Junior College Athletic Association’s Region XV. The team won the championship after knocking off Northern Essex of Massachusetts and then defending Region XV Champion and rival Nassau Community College. started a NYS learner’s permit training and testing program in his class. Students sit at a computer in the classroom which links to the NYSDMV online test. Three months ago, Matthew, a Comsewogue UFSD student, secured employment at Uncle Giuseppe’s in Port Jefferson. Matthew has an entry level position. He does parking lot maintenance, collects carts, and helps people find things in the store. He found the job on SnagAJob.com and completed an online application. “We looked for a job related to the skills he is learning in the Supermarket Warehouse Occupations Program,” said Abel. Matthew’s mom drives Matthew and picks him up from work. Matthew has his learner’s
permit and will be taking his road test in April. He said, “I like working at Uncle Giuseppe’s. I’m nervous about taking my driving test. I hope I pass. It will make it easier if I can drive myself to work.” Matthew has another goal, to obtain a forklift certification, which is also offered in Abel’s class. “I feel that having that ability, that skill, will help me advance at work,” Matthew said. Abel said, “It’s important that our students transition from school to successful employment. Having the ability to get a learner’s permit right in the classroom and then secure a job with the skills that lead to employment supports the vision of our school and the mission of the ESBOCES agency.”

Diabetes Management Suffolk County Executive Steve Bellone and Health Commissioner James Tomarken, MD, invite residents who have type 2 diabetes and their caregivers to attend a free program that will enable them to manage their diabetes. The program, entitled, “The Stanford Diabetes Self-Management Classes,” is conducted in collaboration with Cornell University Cooperative Extension of Suffolk County and comprises six highly participative classes. “Diabetes is a growing public health concern that we must address,” said Executive Bellone. “These interactive classes will provide participants with the tools to manage and control their health and to properly manage their diabetes so they may enjoy an improved quality of life.” Some of the topics
include: techniques for dealing with the symptoms of diabetes, such as fatigue, pain, hypoglycemia, stress and emotional issues such as depression, anger, fear and frustration; appropriate exercise for maintaining and improving strength and endurance; healthy eating; label reading; appropriate use of medication, and effective communication with healthcare providers. Participants will make weekly action plans, share experiences, and help each other solve problems they encounter in carrying out their self-management plans. Each will receive a free book entitled Living Healthy as well as a relaxation compact disc. “Diabetes puts the body at risk for many serious health conditions. The good news is that moderate changes in lifestyle can help you to

Yes, that’s right, Buddy the Betta will soon be accompanied by the likes of a small, colorful (but not too colorful), aquatic snail. I’m thinking purple, to
complement my gorgeous aqua fins. The best part is that, in addition to having a companion for those ohso-long days when my Human leaves me to my own devices, my new little friend can also serve as a portable vacuum cleaner of sorts. With my larger residence, the maintenance can be a bit much, and I do like immaculate living quarters. I’ve even picked out a name – “Squeegee.” Oh what fun we will have together, so long as he keeps those long tentacles off my delicate fins, of course... and away from my food… and off of my favorite bedtime leaf… and, well, we’ll see how it
goes. This could be shortlived. Other than that, life in the bowl is pretty much status quo. I’m going on 15 months old, still as vibrant and beautiful (and humble) as ever, and my Human has graduated to feeding me twice a day – small portions, but still, I’ll take what I can get. It’s a good life – especially when Grammy comes to visit and makes kissy-faces at me. ‘Til next time, this is Buddy, anxiously awaiting the arrival of my new googly-eyed roommate. Take Heart With Tea An apple a day may keep the doctor away, but a recent study found drinking tea might keep the cardiologist at bay.
The USDA reported that men and women who drank black tea for three weeks reduced their total and bad
cholesterol (LDL) levels by an average of 7.5 percent. Researchers concluded that drinking tea may reduce the
risk of coronary heart disease. Antioxidants called flavonoids, found in both green and black teas, are thought to
be potent weapons in the fight against heart disease. That news may be especially important
for women, given that heart disease kills more women than all forms of cancer combined including breast cancer.
