Timeless I recently celebrated my twelve-year anniversary of working here at South Bay’s Neighbor Newspapers. How quickly time does fly. I can’t say I recall the exact start date of any previous jobs; but this one happened to coincide with my grandmother’s birthday, and so it was instantly commemorated for being just a bit more special. Bittersweet, perhaps, since her passing… but May 2nd shall always hold a place in my heart. It’s funny how we place such importance on certain dates, knowing full well that each subsequent year will bring with it an entirely different set of emotions and circumstances; in effect, no two anniversaries will ever be the same, whether it be of the celebratory or the solemn

sort. Expectations rarely hold up to the standards we have imposed. If you had asked me twelve years ago what I would be doing in the year 2017, I can’t say I would have pinpointed my current situation for what it is; nor would I have had any real inkling as to what would transpire in the decade to come. There is something to be said for longevity, to be sure. As long as you are able to find fulfillment in your daily life, who’s to say what you “should” be doing at any stage? Only you. The calendar is merely a guideline, a means of breaking up the years into more manageable chunks of time by which to take a step back and evaluate. One day at a time, that’s about all most

of us can handle. Some will be good, some bad; but in the end, they will steer your life in a particular direction. That, you can be sure of. Who knows what the next twelve years might bring. Maybe I’ll be writing my 1000th column for South Bay’s Neighbor Newspapers. Perhaps I’ll be taking photos as I journey from one corner of the world to another, journaling as I travel to undiscovered lands. Or maybe, I’ll have gotten all that out of my system and decided to settle down in a house in the suburbs with the white picket fence. Who knows. In the meantime, another May 2nd has come and gone, very different from the last and most likely nothing like the next. Only time will tell.

(ACLD), headquartered in Bethpage, serves each year by taking part in the second annual Journey to an Enviable Life 5K Walk/ Run on Saturday, May 20th at Heckscher State Park in East Islip. Teaming Up Habitat for Humanity of Suffolk and future Habitat homeowners will work alongside Lowe’s volunteers and additional all-female construction crews for Habitat for Humanity’s 10th annual National Women Build Week from May 6th-14th. Habitat’s National Women Build Week invites women to help make a difference and devote at least one day to help build decent and affordable housing in their local communities. More than 17,000 women, including Lowe’s Heroes volunteers, are expected to volunteer at construction sites across the country as part of Habitat’s 2017 National Women Build Week. Habitat Suffolk has a multitude of construction events planned throughout the week including women volunteer groups from Advantage Title, PSEG LI, Zebra Technologies, Line Dancers from Stylin’ Gang, United Way Women, as

well as groups of friends and individual build participants. The week of community service will culminate with a special Girl Scout MotherDaughter Build Day taking place the day before the Mother’s Day holiday. Lowe’s helped launch National Women Build Week in 2008 to empower women to advocate for affordable housing and spotlight the homeownership challenges faced by many. Each year, Lowe’s provides the support of their employee volunteers, Lowe’s Heroes, and conducts how-to clinics at stores to teach volunteers construction skills so they can feel equipped to take part in the builds. Habitat Suffolk staff and volunteers will join women across the country to help build decent, affordable housing on Long Island as part of National Women Build Week. “Through our

partnership with Habitat and support of National Women Build Week, Lowe’s empowers women to get involved in their communities, learn construction skills and make a meaningful impact,” said James Frison, Lowe’s director of community relations. “We’re grateful to all the women on Long Island who will volunteer this week to help build and repair decent and affordable housing.” Habitat’s first Women Build event was held in 1998. Since then, allwomen construction crews have helped build more than 2,500 homes in partnership with families. ( N A P S ) — Osteoporosis—bone loss— is a serious condition that half of all women and many men can expect to develop at some time in their lives. Fortunately, it can be detected and treated. In fact, women who have a bone density scan have 35 percent fewer hip fractures

than those who do not. The problem is only 23 percent of eligible patients are scanned. The experts at the National Osteoporosis Foundation (NOF) say that if you’re a woman over 65 or a man over 70 or if you’re over 50, postmenopausal and have risk factors for osteoporosis, you should

probably talk to your doctor or other health care provider about getting a bone density test, especially if you’ve never had one. Many doctors are learning more about this testing device at www. hologic.com.

The multi-campus LIU Cares initiative is expanding the reach and impact of LIU’s academic service initiatives, providing community agencies and nonprofits with volunteer assistance, fundraising opportunities and access to both Post and Brooklyn campuses. The Sanford Institute of Philanthropy at Long Island University will strengthen these partnerships by serving as a resource for nonprofit organizations in the Northeast that wish to increase their fundraising capabilities and their impact in the community.

The core approaches of the Sanford Institute of Philanthropy movement are based on Mr. Sanford’s own interactions with hundreds of nonprofits and foundations, and his desire to provide training for fundraisers to more effectively convey their causes.

The founding Sanford Institute of Philanthropy at National University has created foundational curriculum based on the vision of Mr. Sanford to increase the impact of nonprofits through a unique focus on frontline fundraising and donor relations. A common cornerstone among each Institute is the Cause Selling approach, which blends the passion of philanthropy

with an emphasis on proven business principles. Suffolk County Legislators presented the legislature’s Employee Excellence Award to three employees for their outstanding efforts at their April 25th, 2017 meeting; two from the Suffolk County Department of Law, Division of Risk Management and one from the Department of Information Technology. Michele H. Johannsen of Farmingville and Jenine M. Vella of Sound Beach were nominated by County Attorney Dennis Brown and Leslie Baffa, Director of Risk Management for implementing the inhouse Risk Management Complaint System as co-captains. Marc Perez, Senior Programmer Analyst, was nominated by Department of Information Technology Commissioner Scott Mastellon for his management and execution of the County’s web development. “We are pleased to

District Earns Award The NAMM Foundation has again recognized the strength of the Islip School District’s rigorous music program, awarding it a Best Communities for Music Education designation for 2017. Northwell Health’s Southside Hospital provided instruction on bicycle, pool and general safety, using handson participation. The kindergartners enjoyed roleplaying as doctors, nurses and EMTs by “treating” the plush patients. “What a fun way to learn

about safety,” said PTA President Susan Kiernan. In light of the teddy bear clinic’s popularity among students and teachers alike, a representative from Cohen Children’s Medical Center attended with Dackow to facilitate the CCMC’s future mirroring of the program in Nassau County.

Students can pay it forward by sharing the information they learned in their classroom with friends and family. A Chance to Shine

Islip’s recent annual spring districtwide String Festival, held at Islip Middle School’s auditorium, featured performers from around the district, including two orchestras each from Commack Road Elementary School, Sherwood Elementary School and the middle school, and the high school’s orchestra, chamber orchestra and electric string ensemble. This year the event’s musical selections included Ed Sheeran’s “Thinking

Out Loud,” performed by guitar students and the combined middle and high school orchestras. Continuing a tradition, the event culminated in a performance of the combined ensembles, with nearly 300 students playing the “William Tell Overture.” According to Vincent Green, Islip’s director of fine and performing arts, the String Festival began three years in response to a lack of opportunity for student string players.

“Musicians other than string players have lots of chances to both perform and hear great local performances,” said Green. “Marching bands and choral concerts abound, but orchestral gigs are less common. We wanted our students to have the opportunity to stand sideby-side with players like them, whether it’s the senior recalling what his first sounds were like or the fourth-grader aspiring to play the electric cello in high school.”

Heartland Proposal Town of Islip officials held a public hearing that was attended by hundreds, who turned out both in favor of, or in opposition to, the proposed Heartland Town Square project. The Heartland Town Square proposal involves the development of the former Pilgrim State site into a mixed-use space, containing commercial, retail and residential areas, in what developers are calling a “self-contained community.” Over 144 members of the public

registered to voice their opinions on the proposal at the meeting, adding to the roughly 1,600 comments submitted online through the Town’s website. “This is one of the most important decisions to ever come before the Islip Town Board, and we have to ensure that the public is given every chance to be heard,” said Supervisor Angie Carpenter. “Last night we heard spirited comments from people and groups representing all interested parties,

which is how the process is supposed to work in our Town.” The submission period for online comments has ended. However, anyone wishing to submit any additional comments may do so by mail through the end of business, May 15th, by mailing or delivering to the Islip Town Clerk at: Islip Town Hall, 655 Main Street, Islip, NY 11751. All comments received will be entered into the public record.

The students had to demonstrate that their success in a subject went above and beyond what is normally expected of a student. The Town Board members thanked the students for their hard work, and thanked the parents and teachers as well who have succeeded alongside the students.

Cleanup Day

Islip Town Councilman Steve Flotteron, and members of the Islip Town Board, joined nearly one hundred community volunteers, members of Keep Islip Clean (KIC) and Youth Environmental Services, to continue the beautification of Brookwood Hall in East Islip at the Town’s 3rd

annual Gardening Day. The project, spearheaded by Councilman Flotteron, brought together dozens of dedicated citizens, who worked throughout the day to clean-up and beautify the estate’s grounds at Brookwood Hall. Staff and volunteers planted 24 ornamental cherry trees, which now

line the property’s original gated Main Street entrance at the waterfall. Flowers were planted around the estate’s signage, and additional shrubbery was added to the lakefront esplanade. Volunteers also cleared debris throughout the day.

ECO-CARNIVAL - Suffolk County Legislator Tom Cilmi stopped by Seatuck’s 8th annual Eco Carnival held at the Suffolk County Environmental Center in Islip. In celebration of Earth Day the Eco-Carnival featured a full day of family fun and education for residents of Suffolk County through nature programs, live animals, music, art, games and food. Legislator Cilmi was delighted to meet Delaney and Katrina, who were enjoying the festivities.

The Adelphi NY Statewide Breast Cancer Program is the recipient of a grant from Kat’s Ribbon of Hope (KROH) that will allow the program to expand its services for bilingual social work/ patient navigation at local hospitals. Kat’s Ribbon of Hope, Inc., established in 2013, provides financial assistance to women who otherwise would not be able to afford early detection and treatment services for breast cancer. These women die at twice the rate of those who can afford medical attention. Currently bilingual social workers/patient navigators from the Adelphi Program meet with patients immediately following their breast

risk factors for serious health issues. According to the American Heart Association, nearly 70 percent of American adults get no regular physical activity. Yet contrary to common perceptions, physical activity is just as important in preventing heart disease as other modifiable

risk factors including smoking, cholesterol and blood pressure. A person is 1.5 to 2.4 times more likely to have coronary heart disease if he or she is inactive. Adult (and childhood) obesity/overweight level continues to increase: 65% of all Adults are obese or overweight.

There will be morning and afternoon shotgun starts to accommodate all participants for the golf event at the Meadow Brook Club and an afternoon shotgun start at Piping Rock. There will also be themed holes and raffles along the 18hole course. Cocktail dinner reception and

awards will follow at the Meadow Brook Club for both courses. For tennis, a light morning breakfast will be served with round robin play to follow. Lunch will be served after the tournament. Brisk walking around the golf course and playing

Suffolk County Executive Steve Bellone recently threw out the first pitch at the Long Island Ducks first home game of the season against the New Britain Bees. For the third year in a row, the home opener kicked off Suffolk County’s “Heroes of the Game” program, where a local veteran or active duty service member is honored during a live in-game tribute for their dedication

and service to our country. The “Hero of the Game” who was honored during the home opener was Anthony Dellvalle, who served in both the U.S. Army and U.S. Navy from 1986-2001. Anthony is currently a member of the American Legion and also assists veterans with the filing of disability claims and obtaining benefits. Veterans and active duty personnel can register to

Each Hero of the Game will receive 10 complimentary tickets to the game at which they will be honored, so that they may bring their family and friends.

Suffolk County Executive Steve Bellone recently joined Suffolk County Police Commissioner Timothy D. Sini, members of the Suffolk County Police Department and members from other law enforcement agencies in Suffolk County to honor this year’s “Top Cops” for making the most arrests of drivers who were ability impaired by drugs or alcohol in 2016.

DWI arrests last year totaled more than 4,600 in the police district and the County’s east end towns and villages. This year’s ‘Top Cops’ were: First Precinct Officer Weldon Drayton; Second Precinct Officer Joshua Parsons; Third Precinct Officer John Mercurio; Fourth Precinct Officer Douglas Nassisi; Fifth Precinct Officer Timothy Vicinanza; Sixth Precinct

Officer Michael Malerba; Seventh Precinct Officer Brian Koch; SAFE-Team Officer Zacarias Alverado; and Highway Patrol Officer Roger Kleber, who had the most DWI/DWAI arrests in all of Suffolk County. Officer Nassisi also received the “Distinguished Recognition Award” for leading his precinct in DWI arrests for the 20th year in a row.
