Volunteers are the backbone of PalO-Mine, and there are many different ways to get involved. All volunteers must be at least 16 years of age, attend a volunteer orientation (orientations are held monthly), complete a training program and be available to volunteer a minimum of four hours per week. Some ways you may volunteer are: working directly with children and adults in lessons, working with therapy horses and performing barn chores, fundraising, and helping with property enhancement and landscaping. Hot ‘n Cold ’Tis time for a bit of this and that, a collection of random thoughts and musings collected over time and compiled for your reading pleasure - or displeasure, as the case may be. But seriously, I do hope you’ll indulge this meandering assortment of musings. How about this weather? After waiting for what has seemed like months for spring to arrive - oh, wait… - it appears the season of growth has finally taken up residence over the shores of Long Island. Some might even go so far as to say time has fast forwarded right into summer; but we can be sure to experience a few more chilly days before it’s safe to put the jackets away for good. ’Til then, best to keep those flip flops on stand-by. There will be plenty of time for bare feet and bathing suits in the months to come. In the meantime, the trees have begun to explode with blossoms, and everyone is busy sprucing up their gardens - or, in my case, balcony - with the latest annuals. Year after year, I am struck by
all the pretty perennials at the nursery, and wind up purchasing far too many tulips, daffodils and hyacinths for someone who has nowhere for them to permanently reside. This year, I “scaled back” the floral collection; but still, as we speak, several tulip plants have already bloomed past their expiration and are in desperate need of a home for the offseason. What can I say? I’m a sucker for spring. I tend to have the same unhealthy obsession when it comes to indoor decor, as I have amassed quite the array of seasonal knick knacks, wreaths and doormats. As soon as the months transition, there I am, back up on the step stool, peering into the infamous “Christmas Closet” for signs of the many spring, summer and autumn accents I have accumulated over the last five years. Back in March, I realized that, with the exception of Easter decorations, I am seriously lacking in anything not resembling a bunny, chick or egg. Were my apartment able to hold one more thing, I’d say it was time
for a small spring shopping spree; but alas, it cannot. Well… maybe just one more thing. Speaking of decor, my little finned friend, Norton von Spudley - “Spud,” “Norty,” “Baby Betta Extraordinaire” - seems to be flourishing in his bowl on my desk at home, nestled under “his” desk lamp and next to a rather striking likeness of himself in the form of a blown glass ornament. Often, I find him staring intently at the little turquoise fish in the hand-painted ball, as if pleading with it to come out and play. Nearly 18 monthsold, my Norty seems to be enjoying his time as my companion, which he expresses daily by trying to devour my finger as I sprinkle crushed pellets into his bowl. Table manners are not a strong point. And that’s the way it stands in this second week of May, hovering on the brink of summer while shaking off the winter doldrums that have engrossed us for the last several months - the happy medium, if you will, of weather. Enjoy it while it lasts. This, too, shall pass.

Lisa Gatti is the CEO & Founder of PalO-Mine Equestrian, Inc., a comprehensive therapeutic equine program that uses horses to facilitate growth, learning and healing for individuals with disabilities and for other vulnerable populations. Through persistence, hard work and a passion to serve others, Lisa opened Pal-O-Mine in 1995 as a 501(C)(3) non-profit. Pal-O-Mine grew from having two programs, eight horses and 80 students per week to 11 programs, 25 horses and 400 students per week - and they continue to grow today! This organization sits on eight acres, with a 20-stall barn, handicapped accessible bathrooms, a new 100’ x 120’ indoor arena with state-of- theart footing and a rider hoisting system, and three outdoor riding arenas. They help an unbelievable amount of people, and their work is truly heartwarming. Individuals of all ages are welcome to take part in the programs they offer. They operate with five full-time employees, 35 independent contractors and 80 volunteers a week. Their riding instructors have experience with the following diagnoses: Autism Spectrum Disorders, Anxiety Disorders, Sensory Processing Disorder, Attention Deficit Disorder, Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder, Neurological Disorders, Cerebral Palsy,

Earlier today, the Suffolk County Department of Labor hosted a Job Fair at the Suffolk County OneStop Employment Center, located in Hauppauge, to recruit and fill positions in the food service and hospitality industry; event security; parking attendants and shuttle/ bus depot attendants; and operations. The Suffolk County Department of Labor has been actively supporting the recruiting efforts of multiple USGA vendors such as Purple Tie by Ridgewells, MTK Resources, Country Club Services, and Andy Frain Services, to bring temporary employment opportunities to our residents for the U.S. Open Golf Championship. “There are thousands of positions still open for our residents of all ages to take advantage of,” said Suffolk County Executive Steve Bellone. “I encourage all

FIRST® Tech Challenge Team #5477, “Innovo” from Hewlett; Team #4137, the “Island Bots” from East Setauket; and Team #9421 the “Hydrofluoric Robotics” from Greenlawn; each competed at the FIRST Tech Challenge SuperRegional Championship in Scranton, Pennsylvania, March 16th-18th. These teams earned the chance to compete at that post-season event following the FIRST Tech Challenge SBPLI Long Island Championship at Smithtown High School on February 9th. A total of 15 FIRST® Robotics Competition teams will represent Long Island at the FIRST World Championships in Detroit, April 25th-28th. Included among them is Team #810, the “Mechanical Bulls” from Smithtown, which won the SBPLI Long Island Regional FIRST Robotics Competition #2 on Saturday, April 14th, along with the event’s coveted Chairman’s Award and the Woodie Flowers Finalist Award. Also advancing is Team #5016, “Huntington Robotics”
from Huntington, which won the Chairman’s Award at SBPLI Long Island Regional #1, on April 11th, earning them a guaranteed spot. Team #6806, the “Mineola Wild Reds” from Mineola, the region’s only rookie team for 2018, took home the Rookie All-Star Award at Regional #2; while Team #2869, the “Regal Eagles,” earned the Engineering Inspiration Award at Regional #1; both will compete in the Championship. Further FIRST Robotics Competition teams from the region set to participate in the FIRST World Championship are: Team #533, the “PSIcotics” from Lindenhurst and Team #2638, the “Rebels” from Great Neck, were each finalists in Regional #1; as well as Team #870, “Team R.I.C.E.” from Southold; Team #1468, the “J-Birds” from Hicksville; and Team #3171, the “Hurricanes” from Westhampton Beach, were each finalists at Regional #2, and all secured Wildcard opportunities. Team #263, the “Sachem Aftershock”
from Ronkonkoma; Team #527, the “Red Dragons” from Plainedge, whose member, Nicole Jacobsen, earned the Dean’s List Award; and Team #3950, “RoboGym Robotics” from Glen Head, which earned the Team Spirit Award; were each waitlisted following Regional #2 and will now also attend the Championships. Team #4458, the “Infernobotix” from Center Moriches, which won the Tech Valley Regional in Troy, New York on March 17th; Team #329, the “Mohawks” from Patchogue-Medford, which was awarded the Engineering Inspiration Award at the Hudson Valley Regional in Suffern, New York on March 25th; and Team #3624, the “ThunderColts” from Huntington Station (Half Hollow Hills), which earned a wildcard spot following the Tech Valley Regional, are all also competing at the 2018 World Championships. “We are extremely proud of all the hard work and dedication that

Suffolk County Legislator Tom Cilmi, guest speaker at the April 19th Eastern Suffolk BOCES (ESBOCES) Community Legislative Committee Meeting shared about his pathway into politics, emphasizing the importance of perseverance and making a difference. In attendance were ESBOCES and Academy staff and students, parents, board members, and local school district students. Mr. Cilmi provided a brief synopsis of his life from the work ethic he learned from his mother, his days as a musician, owning his own business,
and his entry into politics by way of volunteering in a local election. “I’ve had different careers through my journey to becoming a legislator,” he said. He shared one of his favorite sayings: “The more bridges you build, the more rivers you cross,” which is a metaphor to his life’s journey. The rivers are challenges to the success you wish to achieve; the bridges are what you build to attain the success. “I thoroughly love my job and I think it’s vitally important that I make myself personally accessible to my constituents.” Cilmi represents the residents
of the 10th Legislative District, which comprises Great River, portions of Bay Shore, Bohemia, Brentwood, Central Islip, East Islip, Hauppauge, Islandia, Islip Terrace, Oakdale, and Ronkonkoma. He advised everyone to get to know their government official. He said, “Call them and get answers to your questions. At the high school level, Dr. Semel launched a cosmetology career program, provided computer-driven SAT prep and coordinated Academy programs. Dr. Semel, an Amityville resident, holds a Doctor of Education degree in literacy from Hofstra University and a Master of Science degree in administration from LIU Post. “I am delighted to be chosen as the next superintendent for the Islip School District,” said Dr. Semel. “For the last 11 years, I have worked closely with a wonderful administration team and dedicated staff who enrich the lives of students daily. Emily Prunty, a Bay Shore High School student, enrolled in the Academy at Bixhorn Technical Center’s Professional Photography and Digital Imaging Program captured the Gold medal at the New York State SkillsUSA Competition held in Syracuse. The Eastern Long Island Academy of Applied Technology is located in Bellport. Emily competed against regional winners from across NYS, having her skills and knowledge in the photographic field tested against the best in the state.
This First Place award entitles Emily to a trip to the National SkillsUSA Conference in Louisville, Kentucky, where she will compete against State winners nationwide. The contest is defined by industry standards. It is divided into two parts: a written exam testing overall photographic knowledge and a skill performance. The contest includes a written knowledge exam that assesses the overall photographic knowledge through a series of multiple-choice questions. The contest
also includes a series of hands-on performance activities assessing overall photographic mechanics and techniques. The performance portion of the contest includes a field assignment, conceptual assignment, portrait studio – where a student will create a conceptual piece of art, commercial studio, photo challenge, a digital editing session, a troubleshooting section, print competition, and job interview to assess job preparedness.

Town Supervisor Angie Carpenter and members of the Town Board, welcomed more than 40 students, their families, and administrators at the Town’s 40th annual Student Achievement ceremony held during the April Town Board meeting. The students, who were hand-picked for having exhibited academic excellence in a total of 11 different categories, hailed from schools across Islip Town and beyond, including: Bay Shore,
Brentwood (Freshman Center, Sonderling, Ross), Central Islip, Chaminade, Connetquot, Islip, St. John the Baptist, and West Islip. Michael will attend Georgia Institute of Technology on a College of Science Dean’s Scholarship. He will major in Physics with a minor in Spanish and plans to pursue medical school in the future. He is also an active volunteer with Challenger Athletics which is an organization dedicated to providing sports programs to people with learning and physical disabilities. Michael is the president of SJB’s chapter of the National Honor Society, competes in Varsity Lacrosse, and is a dedicated volunteer at St. John the Baptist’s Writing Center where he serves as a tutor. In addition to his inschool activities, Michael volunteers at St. Charles hospital where he works in an administrative capacity. He also served as a research assistant at Stony Brook University during the summer of 2017. Aidan will attend Boston College next year, where he will pursue a major in Finance and Accounting at the Carroll School of Management. He plans on minoring in Spanish.
