Written In The Stars By: Jamie Lynn Ryan I’ve never been one for astrology, but I recently came upon a site that analyzed such philosophies based upon the date, exact time and location of your birth, providing a detailed account of every personality trait imaginable. I have to admit, I was prepared to be skeptical of the results – until I read them. So many characteristics were, shall we say, scarily accurate. The analysis was so in depth that even the most cynical person might take pause. From pinpointing my shy, somewhat introverted

nature to delving into my tendencies toward “bitter sarcasm,” it covered all aspects quite thoroughly. I was impressed, to say the least. So what conclusion should be drawn from these seemingly abstract signs and symbols? Are our personality traits pre-determined, based upon some random arrangement of the sun, moon and planets, or are we continuously shaped by the environments in which we are respectively raised? It is an interesting concept to consider, especially taking into account the unexpected accuracy of this “reading.”

It coincides with the ageold question: can we alter our destinies, or is our fate predetermined? Normally, this contemplation is reserved for our path in life as a whole, not necessarily the many facets of our specific being – but the question is valid, nonetheless. I suppose, as with anything, there is a happy medium of open mindedness and reservation that serves us best. Reading into anything can bring mixed results; but there is no substitute for stepping back and seeing a situation – or a person – for what it truly is.

I took a trip to Fire Island this past weekend. For the first time since last summer, I was back home. When I hopped on the ferry, I did not even think about the changes that may have influenced my little island. Upon arrival, it became clear that the summer rush had not yet spoiled the little barrier beach which, for me, symbolizes paradise. After many months of labor, the island is starting to get ready for the busy season. Starting Memorial Day weekend, the concrete sidewalks which seemed so isolated will be crawling with tourists. This is not a bad thing, however,

as the influx of visitors exponentially bolsters Fire Island’s economy. As I enjoyed my first few moments back on Fire Island, I noticed one characteristic that I had longed for the most. The geniality of the people who call this island home is a trait that I have never experienced elsewhere. Living as an “islander” grants you access into an exclusive club reserved only for those who treasure the island the most. Like myself, those same islanders have built the barrier beach up even after devastation. Following Hurricane Sandy, Fire Island was in pretty

bad shape. Thankfully, essentially all facets of the infrastructure have been repaired, and the island is better than ever. As one walks down the beach, “TrapBags” can be seen. Filled with sand, these large canvas sacks were purchased in order to create a dune. It seems as though this plan is thoroughly succeeding, possibly saving countless homes previously marked for demolition, like my own. After months of rebuilding, Fire Island is back in fighting shape. It seems as though this little slice of heaven is ready to welcome the masses as we quickly slide into summer.

FOOD FOR FINES - Brentwood Public Library patrons and staff donated 800 pounds of food to Pronto of Long Island during the library’s annual Food for Fines event. This annual event, organized by Senior Clerk Celia Vollmer, collected much-needed food for the non-profit community outreach center, which provides basic human services to those in need.

EASTER BASKET DRIVE - The students teachers and parents at St. Patrick’s school in Bay Shore recently put together over 115 Easter baskets. These baskets were an unexpected treat to the children of St. Patrick’s Parish social ministry outreach program. These generous donations brought smiles and excitement to the children of less fortunate families in the community. This show of caring and generosity embodies the spirit of the St. Patrick’s school.

Robotics Regional

The Bay Shore High School Robotics Team, The Mechanical Marauders, has had one extraordinary year. The Robotics Team is part of the FIRST (For Inspiration and Recognition of Science and Technology) Robotics Program. FIRST strives to inspire students in the fields of Science and Technology. Working with real world engineering mentors, students learn all about the world of engineering. On January 4th, the Robotics Team attended the official FIRST 2014 Season Kickoff at Stony Brook University. There, the annual “game” was announced for the first time. This year’s game, Aerial Assist, requires teams to design a robot able to move a exercise ball (2 feet in diameter) through the field and into a goal on the opposite end. More points are awarded for passing

between robots during the game and for scoring in goals at different levels. From the moment this game was announced, students and engineers started brainstorming design ideas and immediately got to work on construction. FIRST only allows six weeks for the robot to be designed, built and tested. During this time, students spend a lot of hours working on the construction of the robot under the supervision of engineering mentors. From March 27th - 29th, Bay Shore’s Robotics Team competed at the SBPLI Long Island Regional against 49 other teams. The Mechanical Marauders performed very well and made it all the way to the finals. Teamed with robots from Hicksville and Southold schools, their alliance took home 2nd place. In addition, Bay Shore received the Quality

Award for quality of design and strategy of game play. The following weekend, from April 4th - 6th, the BSHS team competed at the NYC Regional at the Jacob Javits Convention Center, where Bay Shore competed against 65 other teams from a total of 5 countries. Once again, the Mechanical Marauders made it all the way to the finals. Allied with a team from Brooklyn and one from Brazil, Bay Shore did an amazing job, again taking home 2nd place. The winning alliance consisted of teams from Canada, the UK and the US. Bay Shore was honored to again receive the Quality Award, an even bigger accomplishment at this competition considering the volume and quality of the teams present. Congratulations to the Robotics Team on all their hard-won success this season. Go Team 271!

EAGLE SCOUT CONGRATS - Suffolk County Legislature Presiding Officer DuWayne Gregory presented Michael Vincent Kissel of East Islip with a proclamation at his Eagle Scout Award Ceremony, held Sunday, April 27th, at the Great River Fire Department. Michael is a member of Boy Scout Troop 205 in Great River. The Eagle Scout Award is scouting’s highest honor. Eagle Scout Michael Vincent Kissel is among the small percentage of young men who achieve the prestigious award.

For the Barnes and Noble sponsored My Favorite Teacher Award, middle and high school students were invited to nominate their favorite teacher by writing an essay, poem or thankyou letter explaining how that teacher has influenced their life and why they appreciate and admire them. Entries were judged on the compelling nature of the teacher’s qualities, the sincerity of the student’s appreciation and the quality of the student’s expression and writing. Bay Shore Middle School

Librarian Mrs. Holzweiss was named the contest’s local winner and was honored at an event at the Bay Shore Barnes and Noble on April 24th. Middle School student Stephanie Parana, who wrote the winning thankyou letter, was also honored during the ceremony and received a certificate of recognition. During the ceremony, the Bay Shore Barnes and Noble donated a percentage of the store’s sales to the Bay Shore Middle School. Mrs. Holzweiss will now be entered into the regional

competition, where five winners will be chosen. Each regional winner will receive a $500 Barnes and Noble gift card. From the pool of five regional winners, Barnes and Noble will name one teacher the Barnes and Noble National Teacher of the Year. The winning teacher will receive $5,000, the title of Teacher of the Year, win $5,000 for their school and be recognized at a special community celebration at a local Barnes and Noble. Congratulations to Mrs. Holzweiss on this honor.

Thanks to a generous grant from the Bay Shore Schools Arts Education Fund (BSSAEF), Knighthorse Theatre Company once again took up residence at Bay Shore High School for the week of March 11th. Knighthorse provided performancebased workshops for English classes, grades 9-12, consisting of excerpts from Romeo and Juliet, Macbeth, Hamlet and Othello. In addition, a “Shakepeare Jukebox” was presented after school on the 13th, wherein the actors performed spirited scenes from a host of other

Shakespeare plays to a cheering audience filled with students and teachers. Since reading one of the Bard’s works is mandatory for each grade, Ty and Amy Lemerande’s performances served to not only entertain but strengthen students’ understanding of Shakespeare’s dramas. Their dynamic presentations immersed students, both culturally and theatrically, in the kind of atmosphere in which Shakespeare’s works were meant to be experienced. Knighthorse skillfully extended the work done by our teachers by reinforcing

the earmarks and conventions of Elizabethan theater. In addition, Ty and Amy excelled, as always, at communicating the themes of Shakespeare’s plays in a relatable fashion that allowed students to grasp their depth, humor and timelessness. The 15-yearold has a rare progressive

mobility disorder known as Fatty Acid Hydroxylase Neurodegeneration, or FAHN-FA2H. He was undiagnosed for 10 years before the National Institute of Health identified his malady. “Despite being told that there is no cure, and having to fight this disease, Kyle has a strong spirit and always has a smile on his face,” said Falkman. “I would like to thank all the performers, stage crew and the members of the Key Club for helping out with such a worthwhile cause for our friend Kyle.”

East Islip High School’s ninth annual Key Club Talent Show on April 7th continued a longstanding charitable tradition. In past years, the event has collected donations for St. Jude’s Children’s Research Hospital, the Red Cross and various members of the community who are facing financial crisis due to mounting medical bills. Family and Children’s Golf and Tennis Tournament will be held on May 22nd at the exclusive Creek Club in Locust Valley. The Creek Club, located at 1 Horse Hollow Rd, has been featured in Golf Digest’s America’s Greatest Golf Courses listing and offers players stunning views of Long Island Sound. The Tournament begins with brunch at 10:30 a.m. followed by an afternoon of play. Darlings Of Drama

The Bay Shore High School Drama Club’s recent performance of The Phantom Of The Opera rivaled the Broadway production. This March, under the direction of Mr. Christopher Bilella and Assistant Directors Emily Howitz and Megan Beauchamp, BSHS Drama proved it is truly a force to be reckoned with. The show’s very talented cast, including Remson DeJoseph as the Phantom, Asia Stewart as Christine Daaé, James Vaughan as Raoul Viicomte de Chagnhy, and an ensemble of students from both the High School and Middle School, mastered the show’s challenging vocals with the aid of

Vocal Director Ms. Katie Malpigli and Assistant Vocal Director Francesca Hilditch. Other leads included Lindsay Tierney and Kordell Hammond, as the opera house’s principal singers, Killian Quinn and Zander Pacella as opera house managers, Sabrina Song as Meg Giry and Erin McArdle as Madame Giry. Andrew Lloyd Webber’s dramatic musical score, consisting of many contrasting parts and melodies that challenge even professional musicians, was performed expertly by an all-student pit orchestra, led by Music Director Mrs. Christina Mendolia and Assistant Music Director Austin Funk. From building a

twelve-foot high staircase that could fit 100 cast members to transforming our very own auditorium into a 19th century French opera house and Phantom lair, the Backstage Crew created scenery that transported us all back in time. With amazing direction and guidance from Mrs. Julie Berke and Crew Chiefs Emily Certain and Walpole Jean-Philippe, the Backstage Crew showed its one-of-a-kind talent. The Bay Shore High School Drama Club continues to impress the Bay Shore community and raise the bar with every passing production. It will be interesting to see what they come up with next!

Eight of East Islip’s finest art and video students were named Best in Show at the 2014 Long Island Media Arts Show. Students from James Connell’s video production and broadcast television classes and Brian Ortiz and Heather Toomey’s photography and electronic illustration classes attended the annual competition, held at Five Towns College’s Performing Arts Center in Dix Hills on March 21st. The eight winners’ selection for recognition by the judges spotlighted the district’s continued emphasis on advanced arts curricula. “The Media Arts Show is always a wonderful opportunity for serious students to get feedback from professionals as well as view work and gain

inspiration from students across Long Island,” said Toomey. “The students have a wonderful time and really enjoyed the critique and professional feedback. I am very proud of all the students and acknowledge the hard work they put into preparing for this show.” East Islip senior John Callagy received Best in Show for his video “The Shadow,” a five-minute short film combining horror and comedy. Senior Maria Guadagno and juniors Songul Camlica and Melissa Gallardo also won video honors for “At the Gym,” a comedy based on one girl’s struggle between wanting to work out and desiring delicious junk food. A total of 20 photography and electronic illustration students from East

Islip participated, with Best in Show winners including Asma Malik (for her “Beauty’s Death” poster), Joan McCormack (“Rangerstown” poster), Kimberly Moreno (photograph as “The Joker”) and Michelle Suter (“Frozen” poster). “It was interesting and fun, and I enjoyed looking at photography from other students,” said East Islip’s Destiny Nalls. “It was a good experience, and I learned how I can improve my photographs,” added Teresa Teuschler. “All in all, the day went very smoothly for East Islip,” said Connell. “The students who attended had a great time and got the opportunity to showcase their efforts with other school districts throughout Long Island.”

This year’s PTA Reflections arts contest theme of “Believe, Dream, Inspire” proved inspirational indeed for artistically minded students of the East Islip School District.
