Two COVID-19 Clinical Trials Offer Patients Hope Catholic Health Services (CHS) is participating in two clinical trials aimed at developing treatments for COVID-19. CHS is participating in a Mayo Clinic trial that will use convalescent plasma donated by recovered COVID-19 patents to treat individuals who continue to fight the virus. The second study involves using the medication remdesivir, which was developed to treat the Ebola virus and has been successfully used for other coronaviruses including Severe Acute Respiratory Syndrome (SARS) and Middle East Respiratory Syndrome (MERS). The convalescent plasma study is being offered at CHS’s six hospitals. The remdesivir trial is taking place at St. Francis Hospital, The Heart Center® in Roslyn and at Good Samaritan Hospital Medical Center in West Islip. Initial data available from studies using COVID-19
convalescent plasma to treat individuals with severe or lifethreatening conditions related to the virus indicate that a single dose (200 milliliters/6.8 ounces) of plasma showed a benefit for some patients, leading to improvement. People who recover from COVID-19 do so, in part, because their blood contains antibodies that are able to fight the virus. Prior research of other viruses found that treating patients with plasma obtained from those who have recovered from the same virus leads to rapid improvement. The use of remdesivir to treat COVID-19 follows limited testing in the United States, Canada, China and elsewhere that led to an improvement in the condition of some patients afflicted with the virus. “Catholic Health Services is excited to be on the front lines and participate in these clinical trials for COVID-19,” said
CHS Senior Vice President and Chief Quality Officer Jason Golbin, DO, MBA, MS. “Our clinical teams have spent several weeks caring for COVID-19 patients. It means a great deal to everyone to take part in these two cutting-edge research efforts.” Potential plasma donors must have a prior, verified diagnosis of COVID-19, but are now symptom-free and fully recovered. In addition to being in good health, donors must also be at least 18 years of age and weigh at least 110 pounds. The plasma can be administered only to a consenting COVID-19 patient or a patient whose family member offers consent. The treatment will be given to those patients judged by a physician to be at high risk of disease progression to severe or life-threatening.

RECOGNIZING ESSENTIAL WORKERS - On Saturday, April 25, 2020 a THANK YOU sign was installed at the South West corner of Montauk Hwy and South Windsor Ave in Brightwaters. Scouts BSA Troops 43-B and 43-G were very excited to work in coordination with their charter organization AMVETS Post 76 of Bay Shore and the Village of Brightwaters to recognize and express their thanks to the Essential workers on the Front-lines. Each letter of the wooden sign is three feet tall and sixteen inches wide spelling out the words “Thank You”, each letter was designed and decorated by the youth of Scouts BSA Troop 43. The entire project was done strictly following the BSA guide to safe scouting, NYS PAUSE mandates and social distancing guidelines. Scouts communicated and planned the idea using virtual meetings and worked in teams sharing a letter with a theme for several industries and professions. The scouts would like to also thank all other responsible citizens for following the NYS PAUSE mandates. Unemployed Due to Coronavirus? Find Available Benefits (StatePoint) Selfquarantines and stay-athome orders as a result of the COVID-19 pandemic are having an impact on employment right now, and that may continue for some time. During this period of uncertainty, finding ways to pay bills or keep medical
benefits are top concerns for many. Here are some tips from Janine Nowatzky, managing director of Inside Rx. What is unemployment insurance and how do I sign up? Unemployment insurance is a program between
your state and the federal government that provides money when you’ve lost your job. With the federal government’s passage of the Coronavirus Aid, Relief, and Economic Security (CARES) Act, you can receive an enhanced benefit. It authorizes:
• Self-employed and gig workers to receive benefits • An extra $600 a week for up to six months • An extra 13 weeks of benefits beyond what your state currently provides Each state’s rules are different. Review your state’s unemployment insurance program to learn about how to apply for benefits. Or learn more by visiting www.usa. gov/unemployment. How much money will I get? It will vary by state. But remember, under the CARES Act, you will be able to get an additional $600 a week for up to six months. The program’s start date was set to Jan. 27. So if you lost your job due to COVID-19-related reasons between the end of January and now, then you should be able to receive the additional benefit. What about health insurance? It’s scary to think about FIND AVAILABLE BENEFITS - While losing one’s primary source of income is getting through this stressful and scary, taking advantage of available benefits can help you and your family pandemic without health stay healthy. Guardians of Rescue is a 501(c)(3) non-profit organization. Their mission is to facilitate and foster programs and activities that further the unique benefits of interaction between people and animals. They are truly an animal rights and welfare organization whose members work to protect the wellbeing of all animals and their owners, and come to the aid of those in distress. The Guardians are keenly aware that there is no shortage of animal neglect and their goal is to help in as many ways as possible to make sure animals are always taken care of. We are all aware of the toll that this pandemic is having on people, yet the impacts are being felt beyond humans. Animals are also being impacted in numerous ways through this situation, leaving some animal rescue organizations to struggle to provide their services. Guardians of Rescue is overwhelmed
and could really use your help. So many people have had their employment impacted by the virus, therefore donations to this organization are down. This makes it difficult for them to continue feeding the animals, building doghouses, taking in new rescues and trying to cover all their expenses. “We have been providing our rescue services for over 10 years, but now we are struggling to keep our organization going,” explains Robert Misseri, president of Guardians of Rescue, an animal rescue organization. “We are in jeopardy because of the perfect storm that this pandemic has created for organizations such as ours. A couple of weeks ago I invited readers to submit good news they have heard amid these trying times. Below is a heartfelt and inspring submission that I’d like to share it with you all. Mr. & Mrs. Garvey live in Babylon with their 3 children, Kate (11) and Eloise and Sam (10 year old twins). Since the beginning of the stay-at-home order, their kids decided to set up a table on their driveway every single day, weather permitting, to collect food for St. Joseph’s Food Pantry. A neighbor (Anthony Pascarella - owner of CJS Printing ) whom they did not know before the food drive, dropped off several printed signs for them, unsolicited and free of charge. The signs have been very helpful in alerting the community about the food drive. When they began collecting food in late March, Kate, Eloise and Sam set a goal for themselves to collect 1 ton of non-perishable food items and paper products, and they have already surpassed it! With 3000 pounds of donated food collected, they are exited and confident they can reach their new goal of 2 tons very soon. With smiling faces, a passion for others and a spirit of giving, these children have made a big impact on their community. Many people are doing all they can to assist those in need and make a difference, but it is always enlightening to see young children doing so on their own! Also, a big thanks to Fred Shores and the entire Babylon Community for their generous donations, and to Anthony Pascarella for his random act of kindness!

Northwell Health To Delay Payments For Patients Financially Impacted By Covid-19 distress resulting from the COVID-19 pandemic. Northwell has been on the front lines and among the first US health systems to test and treat for COVID-19. The health system is taking this financial step to help alleviate the economic pressure and stress so many families are experiencing as a result of the COVID-19
crisis. “We are first and foremost an organization committed to the health and well-being of the communities we serve,” said Northwell Executive Vice President and Chief Business Strategy Officer Richard Miller. “We live and work here too and are cognizant of the impact the virus is having on
people’s physical, mental and financial health. All of these things are connected. We pride ourselves on being a partner with those we serve and being part of the solution to the challenges we collectively face.” Mr. Miller said this initiative is an extension of Northwell’s already robust financial assistance

A Sweet Lesson At Wing Early in March, first graders in Lisa Dieumegard’s class at Islip’s Wing Elementary School were treated to a visit from local author and illustrator Nancy Ann Bowe. Bowe spent the morning reading her stories to the children and teaching them all about honeybees and caterpillars. “Arnie and the Magic Caterpillars” explained the process of metamorphosis, with the students enjoying learning about each of the stages involved as a caterpillar grows and changes into a beautiful butterfly. Ms.
Bowe also read her story. Ms. Bowe told the students that she wrote “Queen Bee by the Sea” to teach children to love, honor and respect hardworking honeybees as the pollinators that we all depend on.
“The children loved the stories and had a great morning with Ms. Bowe,” Dieumegard said. “They were all very excited when she gave us the books to keep in our class library.”
