For the first time, the Bethpage Air Show at Jones Beach, one of New York State’s largest public events, will take place starting at 12 noon and run until 5 p.m. – a new time for the show, which traditionally ran from 10 a.m. until 3 p.m. Fans are encouraged to arrive early for the best parking opportunities. The Bethpage Air show at Jones Beach takes place on Memorial Day Weekend, Saturday, May 23rd and Sunday, May 24th. The Space Between By: Jamie Lynn Ryan I’m sorry, this seat is taken. We’ve all done it. In a crowded movie theatre, a packed-to-capacity train… sometimes, our desire for personal space wins out over common courtesy. I’m not proud of it, but, well, I’m not entirely ashamed of it either. Case in point: Just last week, my cousin and I ventured out to one of several opening night screenings of The Avengers, Marvel’s latest in a long line of comic-inspired blockbusters. Like most others in attendance, we arrived at the theatre a full 45 minutes before show time in order to avoid sitting in the front row, straining to
see the top of the screen. After scoring two relatively centered seats in the last row, I strategically placed my jacket and pocketbook on the neighboring chair. Fortyfive minutes elapsed. The theatre filled in quickly, but there were still plenty of other options aside from the one single seat I had “saved.” About 20 minutes into the previews, there it was – two stragglers wandered in, loudly discussing where to sit, with one pointing out several suitable options as the other continued to climb up to the last row, our row. “Is that seat taken?” the one, more irritating individual bellowed, while literally standing in front of
me, I might add. I glanced at my jacket and pocketbook, briefly considered moving it aside, then decided against it. “No, sorry, someone is coming,” I replied blandly. Even later than you, if that’s possible, I mentally added. He looked at me doubtfully, then did an about face and headed back to another seat further down the aisle. I glanced at my cousin and whispered, “So much for that theory – now he’s going to see no one’s coming. Whoops. Perhaps if he didn’t arrive after the opening credits…” And with that, I settled back into my seat with my popcorn, my personal space preserved. Obnoxious? Sure. Worth it? You bet.

Stamping Out Hunger Saturday, May 9th, marks the 23rd anniversary of America’s largest-single day of giving - the National Association of Letter Carriers Stamp Out Hunger Food Drive in Partnership with the U.S. Postal Service, Feeding America, United Way and other partners. Currently, 49 million Americans - 1 in 6 - are unsure where their next meal is coming from. Sixteen million are children who feel hunger’s impact on their overall health and ability to perform in school. And nearly 5 million seniors over age 60 are food insecure, with many who live on fixed incomes often too embarrassed to ask for help. In 2014, over 72 million pounds of food was collected by Postal carriers nationally, feeding an estimated 30 million people. Over the course of the 22-year history, the
Stamp Out Hunger Food Drive has collected well over one billion pounds of food. The food drive’s timing is crucial. Food banks and pantries often receive the majority of their donations during the Thanksgiving and Christmas holiday seasons. By springtime, many pantries are depleted, entering the summer low on supplies at a time when many school breakfast and lunch programs are not available to children in need. How The Stamp Out Hunger Food Drive Works Just leave a nonperishable food donation in a bag by the mailbox on Saturday, May 9th, and the Postal carrier will do the rest. This summer, high school and college students can win a scholarship by hosting an American Red Cross blood drive through the Leaders Save Lives program. Registration is now open to host a participating blood drive between June 1st and August 31st, 2015. The Leaders Save Lives program encourages community-minded 16- to 24 year-olds to host blood drives to help maintain the blood supply over the summer months. Students who participate as a
blood drive coordinator are eligible to win a scholarship up to $2,500 for higher education and to earn a gift card. “The Leaders Save Lives program is a great way for students to learn valuable leadership skills while helping hospital patients in need of lifesaving blood transfusions,” said Red Cross spokesperson, Stefanie Arcangelo. “Summer can be a challenging time to maintain a sufficient blood

Fresh Air volunteers need your help to create another fun-filled summer for children from New York City! Each summer, nearly 4,000 children visit volunteer host families in rural, suburban, and small town communities across 13 states from Virginia to Maine and Canada. Host families simply want to share their homes with city children and the pure joys of summertime outside of the city. Families find hosting so rewarding that
more than 65 percent of all Fresh Air children are reinvited to visit the same host families year after year. First-time Fresh Air visitors are six to 12 years old, and Fresh Air hosts range from young families to grandparents. All it takes is the willingness to welcome a New York City child to your community. “Our Fresh Air child loves hanging out on the front lawn and jumping in the pool. Honestly, she enjoys the simple things

A Legend Retires East Islip High School varsity wrestling coach Guy Leggio has announced his retirement after this recent season. The longtime leader was recognized at a recent Board of Education meeting for his 26 years of Redmen wrestling success. Leggio, who was inducted into the National Wrestling Hall of Fame
last year, finished his storied coaching career having nurtured three state champions, 14 state place winners, 14 county champions, 72 county place winners, 85 league champions and 273 league place winners. His 2006 squad earned the county title and was ranked No. 1 on Long Island.
A bricklayer, volunteer fireman and Bay Shore Board of Education president, in addition to a legendary coach, Leggio founded the East Islip KID elementary wrestling program in 1994 and organized the construction of the East Islip High School wrestling room in 2000. Native Earth Day
Staff members from the Journeys Into American Indian Territory organization presented an enriching “Earth Day, Every Day” assembly for second-graders at East Islip’s Timber Point Elementary School. During the April event, sponsored by the school’s PTA, students were introduced to Native
American cultures of the Eastern Woodlands, including hunting and farming practices, and explored a museum of more than 70 different Native American artifacts. At the end of the presentation, the students walked through a fully constructed longhouse, beat on drums and pounded corn. “The kids learned that
the American Indians of our region can teach us a lot about our earth,” said PTA representative Marianne Gilmore. “They learned how the Indians respected the earth and all its creatures. They used every part of an animal and crop so that nothing was wasted.”
50 YEARS HONORED - Islip Town Supervisor Angie Carpenter was accompanied by Councilman Steve Flotteron and Councilman John Cochrane, Jr. at the Central Islip Fire Department’s 109th Annual Installation of Officers, this past Saturday, April 25th. Town Officials presented Honorary Chief Kenneth G. McConnell with a Town of Islip Citation as he celebrates his 50th year of active service with the Central Islip Fire Department.

Students brought in teddy bears or stuffed animals, and were taught the basics of safety and first aid with their toy by Southside professionals. “We had the teddy bear
clinic years ago, back at the Early Childhood Center, and we were so excited to have it again now at Timber Point,” said Laura Micalizzi, the president of Timber Point’s PTA.

Islip Town Councilman Steve Flotteron was joined by Supervisor Angie Carpenter and members of the Islip Town Board as he celebrated Earth Day, April 22nd, with the clean-up and beautification of the Brookwood Hall grounds, located at 50 Irish Lane in East Islip. The clean-up was co-sponsored by Keep Islip Clean and the Islip Arts Council, and spearheaded by Councilman Flotteron as part of his Brookwood Hall renovation efforts. Over 200 volunteers from the community came together to help cleanup, rake leaves, plant flowers, and allaround beautify the grounds of the 1903 mansion. Among the volunteers were companies such as Quintal Landscaping, PSE&G, Capital One, Keep Islip Clean, and more. More than 1000 flowers were donated and planted. Food and music was provided by local businesses. Councilman Flotteron expressed his pride to see so many different people come together for what he considers the beginning of a much-needed renovation. “This building has been here since 1903 and it is integral that we treat it as the historic landmark that it is. This is only one step in the renovation of Brookwood Hall and the Town of Islip is excited for the future of this building and its grounds,” said Councilman Flotteron. Brookwood Hall was once the home of the wealthy Knapp family, later of New York City stockbroker Francis
B. Thorne and later, for 23 years, part of the Brooklyn Orphan Asylum. Now, the mansion is the home of the Town of Islip Parks, Recreation and Cultural Affairs office, the Islip Arts Council and the Islip Arts Museum. Councilman Flotteron and the Islip Town Board are working with the recently established Brookwood Hall Restoration Committee to continue the restoration effort.

Supervisor Carpenter and the Town Board met numerous volunteers throughout the day and thanked them for their hard work and commitment to our Town. “I was delighted to be a part of the Earth Day Brookwood Hall Clean-up. We are so lucky here in the Town of Islip to have a program like Keep Islip Clean that keeps our community beautiful and clean,” said Supervisor Angie Carpenter. Keep Islip Clean is currently participating in the annual Great American Clean-up project. Brookwood Hall is only one of many clean-up dates they have scheduled between April and May. This is KIC’s 25th year of making Islip Town cleaner and greener. “It’s very gratifying to wrap up Keep Islip Clean’s 25th Anniversary by partnering with the Town and Islip Arts Council in this Brookwood Hall Park project. Volunteers will see to it that the grounds are litter free, they’ll build on that with an ambitious beautification plan and we’ll even recycle the water bottles we’re providing. Spark! Challenge Students at East Islip High School’s Medical and Health Technology Career Academy were recently named finalists in Long Island’s first annual Spark! Challenge, sponsored by North Shore-LIJ Health System. Last November, the students had the opportunity to spend the day at Southside Hospital, where they witnessed first-hand the
expert care given to local patients by the hospital’s professionals. As part of the day, students were able to view emergency care, radiology and laboratory services, and to interview the SkyHealth trauma team of North Shore-LIJ’s new helicopter transport system. Back in teacher Paul McHugh’s Health Information Networking class, the students,
led by senior Megan Ludwig, compiled a video showcasing their day. Entered into an Islandwide contest, the video scored as one of the top 10 entries. On April 30th, Medical Academy students will travel to a Spark! Challenge awards ceremony at the Cradle of Aviation Museum in Garden City to celebrate the achievement and find out how they finished overall.

Seatuck Eco-Carnival Second Grade students from Fifth Avenue Elementary School in Bay Shore recently got an advance peek at some of the festivities planned for Seatuck Environmental Association’s 6th Annual Eco Carnival, a special celebration held in observation of Earth Day, when they visited the site at the historic Scully Estate in Islip, during a special

School Students to iron out any kinks before the big day. “The Eco Carnival is one of Long Island’s best Earth Day events because it gets kids outside to participate in an authentic nature experience,” said Nardone. Walk For A Cure Help find a cure for the nation’s leading cause of disability by participating in the 2015 Walk To Cure Arthritis on Saturday, May 16th, at 11 a.m., at Belmont Lake State Park in Babylon, New York. More than 800 walkers, including individuals, families, and teams, will walk the 5K or optional one-mile route to raise awareness about the disease and funding for research to discover a cure. The family-friendly event includes a kids’ zone, Sponsor Expo, Team T-shirt contests and a dog costume contest. “Arthritis is more than
just minor aches and pains,” said Jacqueline Duodu-Burbridge, Regional Director of the Arthritis Foundation Long Island Chapter. “Arthritis destroys joints, bones and connective tissue and can be so painful that just shaking someone’s hand or getting out of bed is not possible.” More than 3.6 million New Yorkers live with arthritis and two thirds are under the age of 65. More than 18,400 children in New York have juvenile arthritis, including Frankie Cernuto of Selden, this year’s Walk to Cure Arthritis Youth Honoree.
“Nobody should have to deal with pain on an everyday basis. I’m honored to serve as this year’s Walk to Cure Arthritis Youth Honoree and will continue my efforts to find a cure for arthritis,” said Frankie. Three members of East Islip High School’s girls varsity basketball team – Jackie Carty and cocaptains Alexa Mattera and Katlyn Walsh – and East Islip Middle School player Gia Gremaux were selected to play at All-Star Saturday at Northport High School on March 29th. The event’s games featured some of the best players in the county in their respective grades. Mattera, a junior, was also named to the 2014-2015 Suffolk AllCounty basketball team at a ceremony at Villa Lombardi’s in Oakdale.
The first East Islip girl recognized as All-County since 2004, she averaged 20.8 points per game (seventh highest overall in Suffolk) and led Long Island in free throws made this year. At All-Star Saturday, she and Carty, who was named to the AllLeague team, both played in the Rising Stars game, which their team won. Walsh, a senior and AllLeaguer, played in the Exceptional Seniors game, and likewise won. She will play basketball for the Wildcats at Wheelock College in Boston,
Massachusetts this fall. Gremaux, a seventhgrader, played in the Future Stars game and scored six points. “I am very proud of Alexa and all the girls for having represented East Islip so well in their allstar games and throughout the season,” said girls basketball head coach John Caraccia. “I am looking forward to seeing Alexa, Jackie and Gia continue to grow and I look forward to following Katlyn as she continues her basketball career at Wheelock.”

Mr. Michael Krieger, Bay Shore Middle School Social Studies Teacher, has been selected as the 2015 recipient of the Long

Through BNL, Islip has an ongoing relationship with the Seatuck Environmental Association. Noted scientist Peter Walsh, the educational director of Seatuck, guided students through the process of leaf pack extraction. Clad in waders, students gathered the packs and used dichotomous keys and microscopes to identify microorganisms and macroorganisms that are living in Pardees Pond. By identifying the organisms, which included an American eel as well as
insect larvae and isopods, the students gained knowledge about the pond’s water quality. “It is empowering for such young students to explore their natural world under the guidance of expert scientists,” said EXCEL director Julia Johnson. “This endeavor integrates outdoor and nature education with a handson and student-driven approach to learning. As these spectacular young scientists hovered over their macroinvertebrates, dichotomous key in hand, just itching to identify the organism in front of them, their excitement about learning was priceless.”

Fifth-graders in the Islip School District’s EXCEL program for the academically gifted returned to Pardees Pond on April 27th to extract previously placed leaf packs. The event served as a follow-up to their March field-test of remotely operated underwater vehicles they constructed with naturalist Brett Curlew, which provided a glimpse of the leaf packs under the water. The packs were inserted in the pond, which adjoins the district’s middle school, as part of the Open Space Stewardship Program, an initiative run by Brookhaven National Laboratory that connects

Spring & Sunshine Celebrating Earth Day and environmental awareness on April 22nd, students at East Islip’s Connetquot Elementary School walked the perimeter of the school grounds with their classes and staff members, enjoying spring’s sunshine and observing nature. The children spotted
several bird and squirrel nests, admired flowers, and delighted in breathing in the fresh air. Connetquot’s PTA donated reusable water bottles for all of the students to foster the importance of reusing and recycling products. “Our Earth Day celebration raised awareness about the
importance of protecting our environment and appreciating the world on which we live,” said Principal Deborah Smith. “It was so nice that Mother Nature cooperated by providing everyone with such a warm and sunny day.”

Kevin Nicholas Capobianco successfully completed his Eagle Board of Review on February 5th, officially making him the 57st Eagle Scout of Troop 205 of Great River. Kevin’s Eagle Court of Honor will be held on Sunday, May 31st, starting at 12 noon at Timber Point Elementary School, 200 Timber Point Road in East Islip. Kevin Capobianco is currently a member of Troop 205, sponsored by the Great River Fire Department, with Scoutmaster Mark Businski. On his “road to Eagle,” Kevin has served the Troop as Patrol Leader, Assistant Patrol Leader, Troop Guide, and Den Chief for Cub Scout Pack 205. He has also earned the Firem’n Chit and Totin’ Chip awards and is a member of The Order of the Arrow – the Honorary Camping Society of the Boy Scouts of
America. Kevin has had many unique Scouting experiences, including attending and participating in the 100Th Anniversary Boy Scout Jamboree in 2010 at Ft. A.P. Hill, Virginia, Camp Wakpominee in Fort Ann, NY for five summer seasons, the Gettysburg Historic Trails, Washington, D.C. tour, and a historical Philadelphia trip. To become an Eagle Scout, the Scout must earn 21 merit badges, of which 12 are specifically Eagle required, progress through six rank advancements – from Tenderfoot, Second Class, First Class, Star, Life, then Eagle, and also plan, develop, and implement a major service project for the community. Kevin has actually earned a total of 25 merit badges. The Service Project that Kevin developed, planned, and constructed with the assistance of his fellow Troop members, friends and family members, was five doghouses that were provided to the SCSPCA to give to those who would adopt a dog, but have no home to house them. As Kevin reflects on his Scouting experience, he recently said, “Throughout my time in the Boy Scouts of America, I have acquired a massive amount of knowledge that will help me prevail in my life, and become a model member of society. The BSA taught me how to be loyal, brave, and hardworking. With these traits, I can continue into the world being a responsible and mature young man. I believe the Boy Scouts provide a milestone for boys, and even adults – to live their lives by a high code of honor. Boy Scouts is the organization that has left a positive mark on my life forever!” Kevin is currently a senior at the East Islip High School, where he will be graduating this upcoming Spring Semester. He has been very involved in school activities and clubs, music, and acting.
Kevin is currently enrolled in the East Islip High School Business Academy, Vice President of Marketing of the VE Connected organization, a member of the East Islip High School Inter-Academy Council, the Mock Trial Team, the Yearbook Club, the Class of 2015 Council, the Art Club, and a PTSA Grade Level Representative. Kevin also plays the Cello and is a member of the high school Orchestra, where he has served as Publicist and Co-Vice President. He has also been very involved in soccer, where he has been a member of the East Islip Soccer Club participating in many tournaments, has served as an Assistant Coach, and the proud recipient of the prestigious “Dave Arden Award” – being the first youth member to receive this award from the club. Community service has been important to Kevin as he has worked at St. Mary’s R.C. Church, East Islip, NY as a Vacation Bible School Teacher and Craft Leader, a Teaching Assistant at the Trinity Lutheran Church, Islip, NY Vacation Bible School, worked at the East Islip High School PTSA Craft Fair, worked on the AFSP Walk event, performed Christmas Caroling and Bingo at a local nursing home, collected food for local food drives, and has worked at the St. Anne’s Soup Kitchen. Kevin has also been busy with part-time jobs babysitting, performing catering and waiter services, and currently a Fountain Server at Friendly’s Restaurant, East Islip. Kevin is the son of Mike and Jodi Capobianco, whose father Mike is a former Scoutmaster and Assistant scoutmaster of troop 205. His is also brother to Eagle Scout Steven Capobianco, and brother to Amber, who is a lifetime member of the Girl Scouts and recipient of the Gold Award – Girl Scout’s highest honor.

East Islip High School sophomore Michael Stevens was the sole Long Island musician selected to join the 2015 Carnegie Hall National Youth Orchestra of the United States of America, and only one of only six horn players selected nationwide to represent the U.S. on the Orchestra’s first tour of China this July.
The NYO-USA program, now in its third year, was created by Carnegie Hall’s Weill Music Institute to recognize the finest young musicians aged 16-19 from across the country. The 114 students in this year’s Orchestra, hailing from 37 different states, underwent a comprehensive audition process including audition tapes of solos and essays
about their musical inspirations. The orchestra’s Chinese tour, led by acclaimed conductor Charles Dutoit of the Philadelphia Orchestra and Royal Philharmonic Orchestra of London, will feature guest pianist soloist Yundi. The players will visit many of China’s most acclaimed concert halls in several different regions of the country, including the National Centre for the Performing Arts in Beijing, the Shanghai Oriental Art Center and the culminating concert at the Hong Kong Cultural Centre. Among the pieces performed will be a new work by groundbreaking Chinese composer Tan Dun. Despite his talent, being selected for the NYO-USA came as a wonderful surprise to Stevens, an All-State musician and member of

the Metropolitan Youth Orchestra. “I was so excited, I was in disbelief,” he said. While the teenager is no stranger to world travel, having performed in eastern Europe with the MYO in fifth grade, he is looking forward to his first trip to China. “It’s going to be very new for me,” he said. The Orchestra’s China trip will be preceded by an intensive two-week training residency at the campus of SUNY Purchase in Purchase, New York, working with principal players from some of the country’s finest professional orchestras. The 2015 tour will kick off on July 10th at the Performing Arts Center in Purchase, followed by a live broadcast show at Carnegie Hall in New York City on July 11th, before the sevendate Chinese visit. The tour will allow
Stevens and other fine young musicians to share their artistry with Chinese audiences while also experiencing the richness of China’s culture and history. The orchestra’s visit has been designated as one of only four Cultural Pillars of the Consultation on People to People Exchange between the U.S. and China, designed to strengthen ties between citizens of the two nations through culture. As part of their travel schedule, NYOUSA players will have the opportunity to tour cities, interact with local young musicians and participate in informal community performances. “We are thrilled to bring together this extraordinary group of young musicians, challenging them to not only perform at the highest levels, but also to act as great musical ambassadors for their country,” said Clive Gillinson, Carnegie
Hall’s executive and artistic director. “The orchestra’s first tour to China will be an amazing opportunity for musical and cultural discovery, and I am confident that these talented, dedicated musicians will inspire audiences with their music-making and return home with new knowledge and enthusiasm to share with their peers.”
