student Tyler Nakkin. Islip’s English language learner program has made extensive use of the makerspace. ELL students sometimes lack confidence in other classes, but in the makerspace, they can take risks in a safe environment. Guided but independent, they are exposed to activities they might not otherwise experienced due to their academic load in learning English. “Language is not a barrier when my students use the makerspace,” said ELL teacher Claudia Osorio, who noted that many of the makerspace tech resources, such as SnapCircuits and Ozobots, utilize colors when building or programming, which facilitates visual learning for the ELL students. Special education

students also find a source of growth and creativity in the makerspace, according to teacher Cheryl Hegermiller. Rather than it being a one-time experience, her students want to return to the makerspace, where they can see the results of their work rather than simply sitting and listening. “My students feel successful when they

go to the makerspace,” Hegermiller said. “The most valuable part of the makerspace is that it is something students enjoy. It’s self-directed creation and design, and the students communicate with each other while making. The best thing about it is that makerspace activities go across all areas of the curriculum.”

The makerspace program began with simple supplies and systems such as puzzles, recyclables, Legos and K’nex building sets, and by the end of the first year, Islip had included tech kits such as Makey Makey, BrushBots and drones. According to school librarian Gina Seymour, the most popular makerspace projects this year are items with circuits, such as Snap Circuits and LittleBits, which are used daily by classes and individual students, as well as robots like MiP, MiPosaur, Sparki and Ozobots. her flooded street, despite her repeated warnings that it probably wasn’t going to end well. She never did let me live that one down, deservedly so. But that was Rose, always dispensing advice – some solicited, some not so much – and serving as the unofficial “work mother” to many of the younger employees. In that capacity, a coworker and I took her along as a “chaperone” of sorts on my very first trip to Adventureland not so many years ago. As we made our way from one ride to another, taking care not to miss any, the air was filled with the sounds of screaming – not ours, but of our beloved Rosie, yelling, “Get me OFF this thing!!!” and “Why did I let you two talk me into this???” I don’t think I have ever laughed so hysterically in my life. Needless to say, that was our first and last trip to any amusement park. But the memories, well, those last a lifetime. (As does the framed photo of the three of us plummeting over “Adventure Falls” at the moment of impact, a priceless reminder of all the fun that was had that day.) Just last week, Rose lost her battle with cancer, leaving a giant void here at South Bay – and in my heart. Her selfless determination to continue on over the past year was a perfect example of the type of person she was, always putting others first while forging ahead. What an incredible person, one that is dearly missed by so many. I’ll miss her sitting in the “friend” chair on the other side of my desk, coming to chat about life and work and family and friends and everything in between.

I’ll miss our goodnatured teasing back and forth... her imitations of my ballet positions... her self-deprecating analysis of her “fashion” sense – “don’t have a hair clip, use a paper clip!”... our phone conversations – in spite of her staunch refusal to ever get a cell phone, and her insistence on keeping important phone numbers on a crumbled piece of paper in her pocketbook… just seeing her smiling face every day at the office. But mostly, I’ll miss my special friend. This past December, in celebration of her birthday, Rose and I went out to dinner. She may not have been feeling like her old self, but it was truly like old times. For over three hours, we sat and talked, just the two of us, reminiscing about the highlights and lowlights of our decade working together, chatting about the latest happenings in our lives… and we laughed, hysterically, about many of the same stories recounted here – and countless others, some not suitable for publication in a family newspaper! We could have continued talking for three more hours, easily; it seemed that neither of us wanted that night, that moment, to end. I will always treasure it. How lucky I was to have her in my life – there to guide the way as I began this new chapter all those years ago… and there to see me through the journey every step of the way since. Rose, you will never be forgotten – not by me, and not by those who had the wonderful pleasure of knowing you, of loving you, of having you touch their lives. May you be at peace now.

Rosemarie Kupencow – “Rosie,” as I always affectionately called her – was the very first friend I made when I started working here at South Bay’s Neighbor Newspapers, just about 11 years ago. The resident proofreader, she introduced herself to me right away, and made sure I felt welcome in this new, unfamiliar setting, showing me the ins and outs of the newspaper she had come to call home for close to a decade at that point. In addition to being hired as an editorial assistant, I was brought on to help Rose, my new friend, with some of the weekly proofreading duties. Armed with her magnifying glass and a stash of green pens – “only green,” she would say, “NEVER make corrections with anything else” – she quickly took me under her wing, and we became close companions, often taking breaks together outside in whatever patches of sun we could find, and occasionally heading out for lunch outings at Nathan’s, one of our favorite destinations. She would always order the fish and chips from Arthur Treacher’s, then laugh hysterically as I looked on in horror, marveling at why someone would go to Nathan’s for anything other than a hotdog. After a short time, we realized that not only had I attended high school with her daughter, Jennifer, but we now lived just a few short blocks away from each other, and we began to carpool frequently to and from work. On one memorable return trip, during a rather heavy rainstorm, I infamously “drowned” my car during an ill-fated attempt to navigate down

East Islip High School students in the Medical and Health Technology Career Academy recently partnered with Stony Brook University medical students for a unique mentoring experience. Each East Islip senior has been paired with a mentor from Stony Brook, providing a one-on-one look at what medical school is really like. They

learned basic examination skills, such as auscultating blood pressure and testing reflexes; participated in a CPR simulation program; and volunteered at a local clinic run by Stony Brook and with an affiliated Habitat for Humanity program. “This has been a wonderful and enriching experience for our Academy students, thanks

to the generosity of Stony Brook University School of Medicine, its students and facilitator Diane Piscitelli,” said East Islip science teacher Lisa Neri. “They have learned so much from their mentors and have made lasting friendships that helped solidify their decisions to pursue careers in the medical field.”

Drive to Departmentalization This year at Islip’s Commack Road Elementary School, a pilot program of departmentalization was instituted for fifthgrade students. Also known as “platooning instruction,” students have a daily schedule of reading, writing, science, social studies and math that requires them to switch classes each period and receive instruction from a different teacher for each subject. Fifth-grade teachers and administrative staff created a program wherein the teachers would drop their role as generalists and break from the traditional elementary model of one

teacher being responsible for all subjects during the day, and teach instead as experts in one or two content areas. Many benefits became evident: Teachers have become passionate in their fields as they have ripened into specialists in their areas of expertise; teaching staff are provided with the opportunity to get to know all the students in the fifth grade; and students are significantly better prepared for Islip Middle School because they have been exposed to departmentalization for an entire year as well to the instructional style of numerous teachers rather than just one; and

the students have been afforded the opportunity to be educated as responsible young adults. When asked what she liked best about being in the fifth-grade departmentalized program, which will continue in the 2016-2017 school year, student Maggie Hayes said, “I like how teachers teach their own subject. Some teachers are better at teaching certain subjects. Also, we have 40 minutes for each subject. When we had one teacher, we sometimes did not get to every subject. Changing classes has prepared me to be confident about going to middle school.”

Through the Distance Learning Program at Saints Cyril and Methodius School in Deer Park, educators have the ability to leverage learning from around the globe, bringing down the walls of the classroom and exposing students to a diverse array of educational opportunities. One such activity was SSCM’s participation in a series of Video Conferences with the Milwaukee Public Museum, during which students learned all about

“The Christmas Tree Ship” in their “Art of Storytelling” Series. Guided instruction from experts in a dynamic digital setting keeps kids engaged and entertained while learning lots and allows teachers to then return to the classroom with hands-on activities that bolster that learning. Each year, in line with this program, the Milwaukee Public Museum offers schools the opportunity to share projects created by students who have participated in their Video

Conferences. SSCM’s Fifth Grade teacher, Mrs. Nicole Congro tasked students with thinking through what they’d absorbed during the session and transform the story into a 4-panel story board of their own creation. The students’ designs were wide and varied and showed how much they’d taken away from their faraway instructors in order to showcase their creativity and round out this virtual activity to make it a more authentic hands-on learning experience. Students from all across the country submit projects for consideration to the museum as part of this program, so the news was extra exciting that for the second year in a row, a number of projects from SSCM students have been selected and are on display in the museum’s Student Art Exhibit nearly 1,000 miles away! Congratulations to all the students who participated and especially to those whose projects made it onto the museum wall!

Learning First Aid Kindergartners at East Islip’s Timber Point Elementary School recently learned first aid and safety basics with the help of teddy bears and the Division of Trauma and Emergency Medicine at Northwell Health’s

Southside Hospital. At the hospital’s annual Teddy Bear Clinic at Timber Point, held during two days on April 13th and 14th, the students brought in teddy bears or other stuffed animals, which were used as “patients”

to teach the children familiarity with first aid and medical equipment. Southside program managers Tim Dackow and Angela Scimone also discussed pool safety and the necessity of wearing bike helmets.

Inspiring Kindness In an annual environmental event, students at East Islip’s John F. Kennedy Elementary School celebrated the planet with the annual Earth Day Walk on April 22nd. Bearing special class banners and beaming in the sunshine, the students

trekked from Woodland Avenue back around to the playground, joined by parents, staff and community members. For a fitting conclusion, music teacher James Santoro led the students in singing Joni Mitchell’s “Big Yellow Taxi.”

“We organized our annual Earth Day celebration at JFK to inspire our students to be kinder to our planet, reflect on the beauty of Mother Nature and find ways to reduce, reuse and recycle,” said Principal Aileen O’Rourke.
