Gala Raises Millions In recognition of his dedication to the fight against cancer, Joseph R. Biden Jr., 47th Vice President of the United States of America, was honored at Stony Brook University’s annual charity Gala at Chelsea Piers in Manhattan. Hosted by the Stony Brook Foundation, the Gala generates funds for student financial aid

and a select academic area of excellence. This year, the University raised $6,946,000 in gifts and pledges including $2,051,000 for scholarships and $4,895,000 to support the Stony Brook University Cancer Center. Since 2000, the event has raised more than $50 million. As Vice President, Joe Biden led the White House “Cancer Moonshot” with

the mission to double the rate of progress in preventing the disease that leads to more than 8 million deaths worldwide every year. The intention, said Biden in his remarks, was to infuse the cancer research culture with “the urgency of now.” Under his leadership, the Cancer Moonshot Task Force catalyzed novel, innovative and impactful

partnerships among 20 government agencies, departments and White House offices as well as over 70 private sector collaborations. Biden also helped lead the effort to pass the 21st Century Cures Act, which provides $1.8 billion over seven years for the Cancer Moonshot scientific priorities. “The Moonshot is a program,” said Biden that

“has become a movement, giving cancer patients and the people impacted by their illness new hope. And what cancer patients want more than ever is hope. WELLINGTON, Fla. (CBS12) — Grief counselors are at Emerald Cove Middle School on Monday to help students cope with the loss of a fellow student, according to district leaders.

Hundreds of students and friends showed up at a candlelight vigil at the Wellington Edge clubhouse. Mourners marched to the canal where the crash happened.

Suffolk County Sheriff Vincent F. DeMarco was honored yesterday by the United States Drug Enforcement Administration’s (DEA) Long Island Office in a private ceremony at the Central Islip Courthouse. The DEA

Northwell Health Walk More than 6,500 people will hit the Jones Beach Boardwalk on Sunday, May 21st to take part in the annual Northwell Health Walk, which will support the health of women and children throughout the region. Qualifying Suffolk County residents between the ages of 14 and 20 may be able to secure summer employment through the 2017 Temporary Assistance to Needy Families (TANF)-funded Summer Youth Employment Program. This program, offered through the Suffolk County Department of Labor’s One Stop Employment Center, is a wonderful way for County youths to take advantage of their time off from school to earn money to help with their personal or family expenses. According to Legislator D’Amaro, the summer program is scheduled to begin on Tuesday, July 5th, 2017 and will run for seven weeks through Friday, August 18th, 2017. Island Harvest Food Bank is teaming up with the National Association of Letter Carriers (NALC) and the United States Postal Service (USPS) for the 25th annual Stamp Out Hunger campaign on Saturday, May 13th. As the nation’s largest single-day food drive, postal carriers across the country will collect nonperishable food items donated by generous homeowners. On Long Island, all food collected will help Island Harvest Food Bank to provide supplemental food support to the more than 316,000 Long Islanders who are at risk of hunger and food insecurity. Participating in Stamp Out Hunger is easy. Simply leave nonperishable food items, such as canned goods, cereal, pasta, rice, boxed juices and shelfstable milk (please, no glass items), next to your mailbox before your regularly scheduled mail delivery on Saturday, May 13th. Your USPS letter carrier will do the rest. East Islip Wows For this year’s spring musical, East Islip High School’s Musical Club recently presented an elaborate production of “Aida,” wowing audiences over three nights at the school’s Rydzeski Hall. An intimate, epic and timeless tale of love in ancient Egypt, “Aida” was based on the opera by Giuseppe Verdi. The score by Elton John and Tim Rice won both the Grammy and Tony Award. Aida was played by Alex Bertolini. Michael Robert Krebs played the conflicted Egyptian captain Radames. The role of the heartbreaking princess

Amneris was performed by Victoria Tiernan. Roy Anderson portrayed the evil minister Zoser, father of Radames, who employs sinister techniques to gain the Pharaoh’s throne for his son. Kyle WestgateAddessi played the wily Nubian slave Mereb, who befriends Aida and assists her captured father, Nubian King Amonasro, portrayed by Alexander O’Neill. Michael Kelly made his East Islip stage debut as the pharaoh, while Karina Gallagher portrayed the Nubian slave Nehebka. “I have been involved with so many fine high school productions,

but this one was truly special,” said director and club adviser Brad Frey. “Tim Rice and Elton John teaming up with one of the most passionate love stories ever written is a director’s dream, and I am so proud of the cast and crew for venturing to stage such a popular and difficult musical. The Suffolk Community College Foundation Salute to Excellence Gala celebrating Randi Weingarten, president of the American Federation of Teachers, AFL-CIO will be held on May 4th at the Hilton Long Island in Huntington. The

The Islip Town Board recently passed bond resolutions that authorized the Town to begin drainage improvements throughout the Town, repave parking lots, improve the Town parking lots and sidewalks as well as acquire emergency service radios, and light and heavy equipment. The total approved in authorizing bonds is just over $5 million. “I’m encouraged that the funding for these improvements to some of the Town’s infrastructure was approved by the Town Board, but there is more that needs to be done, to bring our infrastructure to a level that our residents deserve,” said Supervisor Angie Carpenter. Among the approved bonds $800,000 for drain age improvements which will allow the Town to immediately begin addressing neighborhoods most afflicted by regular flooding. The goal is that eventually, drainage systems throughout the

Town will be upgraded and equipped to handle severe weather events. The Town Board failed to approve a bond resolution that would have allowed necessary improvements at the Town’s Bay Shore Marina and bulkheading to finally begin. This further delay may now continue into the boating season, threatening what has normally been an economic and cultural benefit for our Town and its residents. A bond resolution that would have expanded the parking management program to other areas of the Town also failed to gain the necessary approval despite the estimated $1 million in net revenue that such a project was anticipated to generate, to maintain the overall upgrades to parking across the Town. In addition, the bond resolution to construct a new animal shelter once again failed to gain the necessary votes. Supervisor Angie Carpenter joined

Councilmen Steve Flotteron and John Cochrane, Jr. voting in favor of the measure, which would allow the Town to finally construct a shelter to replace the antiquated sub-standard structure originally build in the 1960’s that does not meet today’s standards. “Right now the Town enjoys a Aaa bond rating, the highest possible credit rating that a government can achieve, allowing us to obtain this borrowing at a vastly reduced interest rate. Our families and businesses deserve better facilities and infrastructure than they had to endure in the past, and there is no better time for the Town to seek the funding that would make theses necessary improvements a reality,” said Supervisor Carpenter. The Town Board will have another chance to pass these critical resolutions at a future meeting.

The team of middle schoolers from the district’s academically gifted program earned four medals competing against 38 other teams from around the state. This year’s Islip EXCEL Science Olympiad team consisted of Anjalee Appalsammy, Liam Biscari, James Cottral,

Devin DePass, Elizabeth DeSimone, Aaliyah Esmurria, Mackenzie Howell, Emmie Jensen, Sheyla Lopez, Noah Margolin, Jaelyn McCracken, Victoria Pearsall, Vasu Persaud, Liam Rich and Steven Schadt. Appalsammy and Margolin earned second place in the Mystery Design category, the team of Esmurria and Pearsall won sixth place in Bottle Rockets and seventh in Towers, and Howell and

Medal Winners Jensen came in 10th for Mission Possible. “I was not surprised to hear the state director tell us at the awards ceremony that New York is the most competitive state for this competition out of the entire nation,” said team adviser Julia Johnson. “To make it to this level was an honor, and to come home with awards is extraordinarily exciting. We prepared 25 events to participate at this level and the entire team worked very hard.”

Rewarded with Recognition The current staff of East Islip High School’s awardwinning newspaper, The Broadcaster, continue to uphold the paper’s longstanding tradition of success. At two recent competitions this past week, The Broadcaster was once again noted for excellence in newspaper production. At the Quill Awards, an annual Long Island high school newspaper competition hosted by Adelphi University and part of Adelphi’s Press Day event, the staff equaled or bested their peers from other Nassau and Suffolk high schools, bringing home five awards in six possible categories. The staff as a whole took first place for best layout, awarded for excellence in design and layout, and an honorable mention for most outstanding newspaper. Kerri Kolensky took first place in the best opinion piece category for her story “Finding Emily and Finding Myself.” This

award is given to a thoughtprovoking personal column or opinion piece that reflects the writer’s voice and expresses an issue that affects the high school community. Mike Dondero also won first place in the best illustration or cartoon category, an award judged on the quality of the illustration and its connection to high school life. His drawing accompanied the paper’s November editorial on violence in the world today. Nicole Humpf’s “It’s a Reunion for Rydzeski” earned her an honorable mention in the best news story category, which is awarded to a well-crafted hard news story that deals with a relevant issue at school or the world at large. Broadcaster adviser Joan Dlouhy and Editorin-Chief Emily Glennon were invited to sit on the Quill Awards panel and participate in a discussion presented to the attendees on First Amendment

rights and censorship of high school newspapers. The Broadcaster also picked up two more prestigious awards at the LIU Post Best of High School Journalism Awards. Glennon won an honorable mention for her feature story “EI Alumni Creates Self-Made Business,” while the entire staff of the paper was recognized for its outstanding work, capturing third place for “Best High School Newspaper.” “I’m always so proud of the work our students produce for this newspaper,” said Dlouhy. “They work very hard at producing a top-notch and well-written publication, and it’s rewarding for them to get the recognition they deserve, especially from judges on the college level.” “They compete against students from the top high schools on Long Island and consistently prove they are among the best,” added fellow Broadcaster adviser James Connell.

Osteoporosis ( N A P S ) — Osteoporosis—bone loss— is a serious condition that half of all women and many men can expect to develop at some time in their lives. Fortunately, it can be detected and treated. In fact, women who have a bone density scan have 35 percent fewer hip fractures

Morning Mindset “Morning is an important time of day, because how you spend your morning can often tell you what kind of day you are going to have.” ~ Lemony Snicket We all have our routines. Me, I find particular solace in the schedules of daily life more so than most. My mornings, especially, tend to dictate the tone of the afternoon and evening. This is both good and bad, of course. A missed wake-up alarm, a favorite pair of jeans in the laundry, no more milk in the fridge… all can lead to being thrown off track and sent on your way in a state of disarray. Whereas, when things run like clockwork, the feeling tends to be more of the notion that nothing can stand in the way of productivity. Who knew the snooze button could hold so much power? In lieu of last week’s column

ruminating on the power of the almighty calendar and its tendency to dictate our schedules to the point that we no longer can differentiate those things we truly enjoy doing from those that are pure obligation, I received several kind letters from readers expressing their complete agreement that their lives, too, have been taken over by those tiny square boxes. One woman even went so far as to recommend a book, “Quiet Mind,” which suggests that we would all be better served by taking a moment to sit back and relax, to find an hour of peace in which to clear our minds of the clutter that accumulates over the course of day after day spent running from one task to the next. The idea is to eventually, over time, expand upon this hour and have its influence extend throughout the entire day. How nice that would be.

It all begins with one moment, whether it is rising early to see the sun come up over the Great South Bay, or taking the extra time to prepare a homemade breakfast during the rush of the week, or even driving the scenic route to work. Little things add up to big things, and big things become a way of living, day by day. There is ample benefit to be found in making that effort. It is not a perfect process, to be sure. There will still be those days when the snooze button seems the most viable option, when skipping breakfast and running out the door to sit in traffic is how you are destined to spend your morning. But that doesn’t have to dictate the tone of the entire day. Pop a CD in, turn up the volume, sit back and enjoy the ride. There are miles to go before you sleep.

Operation Safe Stop At the April 25thGeneral Meeting of the Suffolk County Legislature, Introductory Resolution 1198 was adopted unanimously. The bill, sponsored by Legislator Tom Muratore, “declares April 27th, 2017 as “Operation Safe Stop Day,” designed to promote school bus safety. Operation Safe Stop is a cooperative project supported by the New York State Governor’s Traffic Safety Committee, the New York State

Education Department, the New York Association of Pupil Transportation, the New York State School Bus Contractors Association, the student transportation industry and state, county, city and local law enforcement agencies. Its purpose is to increase awareness of school bus safety, as well as the dangers associated with passing a school bus illegally. “An estimated 50,000 motor vehicles illegally pass New York State school

buses every day,” stated Legislator Muratore. “That statistic is astounding to me - 50,000 times each day, we put our most valued resource, our children, in peril. The awareness provided by Operation Safe Stop Day is crucial in preventing school bus accidents that could result in injury or death. Remember, if you approach a stopped school bus with its red lights flashing, you must STOP…it’s the law!”

Ceremonies for bachelor’s degree candidates will begin at 10 a.m., the doctoral, master’s and dual degree candidates will receive their degrees at 3 p.m. The graduates celebrated

in this ceremony, from LIU’s Post, Brentwood and Riverhead campuses, will include 904 undergraduates, 1095 masters candidates, 174 receiving advanced certificates, 43 doctoral candidates and 56 students receiving dual bachelormaster degrees. “As one of the nation’s most celebrated entrepreneurs and philanthropists, T. Denny Sanford’s keynote address will honor the hard work of

LIU’s graduates and their aspirations for the future,” said Kimberly R. Cline, President of LIU. “Mr. Sanford’s vision, to inspire and educate the next generation of leaders and give back to community, is one that reflects LIU’s own values, and we are eager to watch the Class of 2017 achieve great things as they begin their careers.” Sanford, is chairman of United National Corporation and has been honored as one of America’s
