Honorees Named For Classic The Avino Family has been named honoree for the 2014 Ann LePage Golf Classic benefiting Brookhaven Hospice. This year’s event, the Tee-off In The Tropics, will be held on Monday, June 2nd at the Bellport Country Club. In 1984 Jim Avino opened his first restaurant, The Bellport Chowder House and has owned Avino’s Italian Table in Bellport for six years. Jim has always been a member of the Bellport Chamber of Commerce and is currently the Chamber Historian. He has a strong sense of community and supports many local organizations, including the Eastern

Farm Workers Association, Bellport Football, and Playcrafters. Nancy Avino is a registered nurse who has worked at Brookhaven Memorial Hospital and Stony Brook for the past 20 years. Nancy has served on the committee for the Brookhaven Hospice Cocktail Party, which Avino’s has supported for many years. Meredith is the manager and face of Avino’s. SCAVENGER HUNT - Islip Town Councilman Steve Flotteron recently met with a group of students from Commack Road Elementary School who were visiting Town Hall to participate in a scavenger hunt aimed at helping students learn more about their local government. Take a stroll in the park, stick your toes in the ocean, have a picnic in the grass – anything to enjoy the great outdoors. Baseball season is underway, summer concert season is right

around the corner and miles of sandy beaches beckon just over the horizon. But Spring is here now! Enjoy all that the great outdoors has to offer before the thermometer hits 90º and everyone runs back inside to their air conditioners – a different sort of hibernation. Finding Paradise On An Island

For many years, Andros Island in the Bahamas has remained an untouched treasure for marine enthusiasts. From the white sand beaches to the deep blue holes, Andros Island has just as much to offer as any popular vacation spot. As I am writing this, I’m sitting on the beach, with no other human being in sight. This island is desolate. With an area roughly twice the size of Long Island and only three thousand inhabitants, Andros isn’t too crowded. The diving is simply incredible. During our first scuba dive of the vacation, we saw roughly eight sharks. Ranging from reef sharks to nurse sharks to a twelve foot bull shark, our first dive was full of big creature encounters. On another dive, during our safety stop, we were confronted with a leatherback turtle roughly the size of me. It was swimming around us,

and even let a member of our group take a ride on its shell. I’ve never been this close to a turtle in the wild before, and was curious as to why it stuck around. When we boarded the boat, we found out it was turtle mating season, which could explain its interest in us. We even went spear fishing on this vacation. With the third largest reef system in the world, fish were abundant. We caught nearly a dozen fish, and had so much fun while doing it. At the blue hole known as El Dorado, we dove nearly one hundred and fifty feet into the Earth’s crust. These inland flooded caves serve as a time capsule, harboring the preserved bones of species that are now extinct. While surrounded by stalagmites, my family felt completely immersed in the history, culture and beauty of Andros Island. The bone fishing is some of the best in the world.

Although I didn’t get a chance to try it, apparently there are some monster bonefish in shallow water here. To get to Andros, it is necessary to take a small plane from the main airport in Nassau, Bahamas. This may be a deterrent to some travelers, but the island is worth it. With the clearest waters I’ve ever seen combined with undeveloped beaches, Andros offers abundant wildlife in a serene natural setting. Despite the lack of major hotels, there are plenty of lodges that a “high rise” hotel might offer. Many of us can go a week without a spa or basketball court. We aren’t going on vacation for those aspects. Andros Island proved to be one of the most relaxing places that I’ve ever been to, and I would recommend it for any adventurous person looking to spend a vacation on a surprisingly pleasant island.

Going To Work

Students from St. Patrick School in Bay Shore recently took part in a unique hands-on educational field trip. Students went on their field trip to Commerce Plaza, located in Levittown, where they interacted with a simulated work environment. Students took on roles

such as a business owner, a bookkeeper, and doctor, among others, to see what it was like to work and run a business. As part of this experience, students also learned basic economic principles, such as supply and demand, as well as the basic skills needed for the world of work, like collaborating with others.

They also were able to experience what it is like to get a paycheck and to pay bills by writing personal checks. This was an eye-opening experience for studentsbut they enjoyed the hands-on experience and seeing what it is like to be an adult!

Over 50 dogs and nearly 100 people hopped down to Doggie U K9 Academy on Friday evening, April 18th, for their first Easter Egg hunt that went to the dogs! Each dog that went into the Easter Egg Hunt course were given two minutes to sniff out the most treat filled eggs. Eggs were hidden throughout the course in baskets, boxes, decorations and some easy agility obstacles. The winning dog sniffed out 28 eggs! The second place pup got 22 eggs and their was an ‘egg off’ for third place as their was a tie at 20 eggs.

The first place winner won an Easter Basket with over $100 worth of doggie products and the 2nd and 3rd place winners also got Easter baskets with $40 worth of prizes. “We had so much fun with this event! There was an element of training for the dogs and their owners going through the course looking for eggs. Each dog got the hang of it after finding one or two eggs and it was a riot to watch,’ said Ginny Anziani, co-owner of Doggie U. “We were thrilled with the turnout and met so many new dogs

and so happy to help Live. Love.Bark Rescue as well.” A portion of the proceeds from the event benefited Live.Love.Bark Rescue Inc., the non-profit group that works with the Islip Town Shelter Adopt-A-Pet and Rescue Center. The rescue group was there with information and t-shirts for sale and some of their dogs that have been adopted through them. Everyone had a great time and many people were saying so when they left and said they will be back and Doggie U plans to do it again next year!

“Cruising through the Decades” was the theme for this year’s East Islip High School Fashion Show on March 26th. The annual event, coordinated by the school’s SADD club, raised $1,400 for the senior SADD scholarship to be awarded in June. More than 60 students and teachers participated, enthusiastically following the theme with fun outfits from the ’70s, ’80s and

’90s. Seniors were decked out in prom wear donated by RSVP Tuxedos in Bay Shore and Estelle’s Dressy Dresses of Farmingdale. Jon Joseph Salon in Islip Terrace donated salon services for all of the senior girls in the show. Serving as the evening’s emcee, Assistant Principal Nicholas Bilotti kept the audience laughing, while student and guest DJ Chris Abbatepaolo kept them

dancing. “The night cruised by so fast,” said SADD adviser Bridget Lopiccolo. “What a great time we all had, and for such a great cause. It takes many hours to put together this program, but it is worth every ounce of effort.” Photo by: East Islip School District

Putting their knowledge of the scientific method to the test, more than 75 students at Islip’s Commack Road Elementary School participated in the school’s annual Science Fair. For more than five weeks, students in second through fifth grade tested their hypotheses, made observations and drew

conclusions. “The science fair gives students the opportunity to expand upon what they’re learning within their classrooms and explore topics of interest to a greater extent,” said teacher Ted Dieumegard. Grade-level winners for this year are: secondgrader Dakota Dieumegard

Park Temporarily Closed Town of Islip officials have announced that Roberto Clemente Park will be temporarily closed to the public at the suggestion of State and County authorities to allow them to conduct a full investigation into alleged misuse of the public park by a private entity. Town officials and law enforcement agencies received an anonymous complaint that alleges a private contractor may have spread illegal fill during the construction of donated athletic fields on Town-owned parkland. The Suffolk County District Attorney’s Office has started investigating the extent of any infractions as well as the NYS DEC, who weeks ago, began working with Town officials to investigate the anonymous complaint. “As a former prosecutor, and as a parent, I am deeply disturbed and frustrated that impropriety is alleged to have taken place at a community park where our children play. The safety of our

residents and compliance for safe recreation is a responsibility we uphold,” said Councilman Anthony Senft, Jr. “The Town is grateful for the involvement of both the Suffolk County District Attorney and the NYS DEC, and we are committed to cooperating with them to reach a determination of any improper actions taken by a private company.” In 2013 the Town Board secured funding to rehabilitate the public swimming pool at Roberto Clemente Park, which had been neglected for years and became a public health hazard. “We have made too much progress to see this park once again fall into disrepair,” said Senft. “On behalf of the entire Town Board, I am committed to rooting out any unlawful activity that may have taken place at our beloved park. In the event it is discovered that wrongdoing occurred, we will ensure that the wrongdoers are held accountable.” “We take our responsibility to protect

our environment seriously and we will not tolerate any contractor to who fails to follow the law. We will take all steps necessary to remain a positive force in ensuring our residents have safe, clean and environmentally sound parks.” While Clemente remains closed during an investigation, families who are looking for parks with comparable facilities should visit the Brentwood Recreation Center, which has its own athletic fields and open spaces, or call the Parks and Recreation Department at 631.224.5411. The boys spring track squad took their fourth consecutive Suffolk League IV meet at home on April 23rd, beating Hauppauge by an 89-29 score. Robert Hayward won the shot put with a toss of 44 feet, Brian Kennedy came in first in both the mile and two mile, Kennedy and William Reed tied for first in the 1600,

and Alex Newhoff won the 800 meter with a time of 2:09.50. The win kept the team tied for first place. The undefeated Redmen team, one of the largest for East Islip in many years, continues to rack up new personal records while besting their league rivals. John T. Mather Memorial Hospital’s 29th Annual Golf Classic will take place at the Port Jefferson Country Club at Harbor Hills on Monday, June 2nd with proceeds benefitting Nursing Education programs at the Hospital. The event has raised more than $1 million dollars for the Hospital over the years. This year’s John T. Mather Founder’s Award will be presented to International Recovery Associates (IRA) of Nesconset, a full service collection agency for both the commercial and medical industries. The award is given to a distinguished individual or organization with an exemplary record of leadership, dedication and excellence to the provision of health care in the community. IRA has since 1990 generously supported various hospital events including the Golf Classic, Fortunato Breast Health Center and One Enchanted
