North Shore Animal League America’s Adoption Center is currently conducting adoption by appointment only. Our Adoption Team is contacting pre-approved adopters with a scheduled day and time to complete their adoption. The health and wellbeing of NSALA staff, volunteers, adopters, and the community remains our priority at this time. Long Island Community Hospital has raised over $550,000 toward its $1,000,000 goal for the Knapp Family COVID-19 Health Crisis Challenge within ten days of announcing the campaign. The matching grant is made possible by the Knapp-Swezey Foundation, Island Outreach Foundation and Gardener Foundation to help raise vital funding for the community hospital in their fight against COVID-19. “The outpouring of support has been humbling, to say the least. Pet owners can rest easy that there is no reason to believe that dogs or cats in the United States might be a source of infection for the new coronavirus disease — COVID-19 — or cause its spread according to the Centers for Disease Control (CDC) in Atlanta, Georgia. And so far, according to the CDC, there have been no reports of pets becoming sick with COVID-19. This coronavirus appears to be primarily transmitted from human to human. As a pet owner, you may have heard of canine coronavirus, an intestinal infection in dogs, especially puppies, and feline coronavirus, which can cause feline infectious peritonitis (FIP). Adolescence can be a trying time for teenagers and their parents. According to the American Psychological Association, parents and caregivers face an entirely new set of tasks to deal with the changing needs of children as they reach adolescence. The changes that accompany adolescence include physical, cognitive and social changes, and parents may need to adopt an entirely new approach to parenting as they deal with the changing needs of their children during their period in their lives. The APA notes that adolescents often crave greater independence and autonomy, and this desire is a natural part of their development process. It’s important that parents of adolescents find a way to maintain the familial bonds they and their children have developed up to this point, while also allowing increasingly mature teens a level of autonomy that can benefit them throughout their lives. According to clinical psychologist William Stixrud, Ph.D., decades of psychological research has shown that a lack of perceived control leads people to feel overwhelmed, helpless, hopeless, passive, and resigned. So adolescents who feel that they have control over the direction of their lives, feelings which can be strengthened when they are given some level of autonomy as teenagers, are less likely to feel overwhelmed, helpless, hopeless, passive, or resigned as adults.

Sherwood’s Recycling Club Takes Action A grassroots recycling program, helmed by teacher Karen Magee, has bloomed at Islip’s Sherwood Elementary School. The Recycling Club initiative was born when Magee started to bring home paper to recycle, and wondered why schools couldn’t put their recyclables out on the curb like residents. After getting advice from the high school’s Keep

Islip Clean Club adviser Wayne Mennecke, and the town’s Keep Islip Clean organization, Magee determined the cost and began the project in 2019, aided by enthusiastic Student Council helpers. Earlier this year, Sherwood’s Recycling Club placed a blue bin and sign in the cafeteria for students to recycle their plastic bottles and aluminum cans, and Town of Islip Department of Environmental

Conservation recycling educator Danielle Wynn visited for an informative assembly including tips on technology recycling, creating recycled paper and what items can be recycled. “Everyone’s minds are all for helping the earth and recycling and doing what’s right,” Magee said. “It’s just a matter of taking the actions.”

Guardians Of Rescue Is Struggling To Help The Animals Most of us are aware of the toll that the pandemic is having on humans around the country, and even around the world. Yet the economic impacts are being felt beyond humans. The animals are being impacted in numerous ways through this situation, leaving some animal rescue organizations to struggle in being able to provide their services. Guardians of Rescue has had an increase in dogs to care for, while their financial stability to do so declines. Guardians of Rescue is overwhelmed with the hardest hit people who can’t feed their pets and taking in abandoned animals left to fend for themselves which has become a big problem. Now, they are now turning to the people and asking that their organization be rescued amid the pandemic. “We have been providing our rescue services for over 10 years, but now we are struggling to keep our organization going,” explains Robert Misseri, president of Guardians of Rescue, an animal rescue organization. “We are in jeopardy because of the perfect storm that this pandemic has created for organizations such as ours. Many people are living paycheck to paycheck so pets are in trouble.” The pandemic has impacted Guardians of Rescue and other animal shelters in a variety of ways, including: Due to so many people having their employment impacted by the virus, donations to the organization are down. This makes it difficult for them

to continue feeding the animals, building doghouses, taking in new rescues, and trying to cover all their expenses. Some rescue organizations are seeing adoptions and fosters up but this is because people are homebound right now. This leaves the shelters worried about what will happen to the animals when people go back to work. There are some people who fear for their own well-being and financial stability, which motivates them to drop their pets off at the rescue shelter. They feel they can’t adequately take care of their pets during this time, so they surrender them, putting more strain on shelters. Many shelters have to cancel fundraising events that usually bring in a lot of money to fund their programs. Additionally, some shelters offer spring break camps as a fundraising tool, and those had to be canceled due to the pandemic. Many rescue organizations and shelters are trying to help people care for their pets by providing them with food. This helps to keep the person from surrendering the animals to the shelter or rescue organization. Food donations to many shelters are down, simply because people are focused on their own families and are staying home. This leaves shelters scrambling to try to come up with enough money and food to continue feeding all of the animals, as well as providing them with any medical care they may need. “The pandemic has

created a host of problem for the animals,” says Misseri. “I hope that we can make it through this difficult time, so that we can continue to help the animals in need. Our programs have helped countless animals including military members. Making An Impact On Her Local Community!

Tara Capolongo, a Special Education Teacher in the Bay Shore School District, also a member of NYSUT, is making an impact on her local community! Her sister, Jamie Ferro, is a nurse in the MICU/ CCU and she wanted to do something kind for the staff but couldn’t decide on what to do. A few weeks ago, her sister had called her and asked if she can get her a specific type of lotion to help heal her cracked and bleeding hands due to excessive washing. That was where it all began! Tara placed her first order for 45 bottles of lotion on April 8, 2020 with the intent to donate solely

to her sister’s unit. With a nudge from her other sister, Megan Granelle, she decided to share this mission on Facebook in a public post on that same day. Within 36 minutes of posting, she was able to place an order for another 50 lotions. Another member of NYSUT, the President of the Bay Shore Teacher’s Association, Michael Krieger, embraced the mission and shared her post with their colleagues. A close friend of hers, Jacqueline Azzizzo, shared this post with her friends at Twin Pines Elementary School in Brentwood and with Bay Shore’s Fit Boot Camp. Other close friends,

family and members of the community where she lives have also all shared in the efforts to raise money. When all was said and done, Tara was able to order a total of 255 lotions! The lotions were separated into four baskets for distribution. All of these lotions are to be donated to the medical staff at Long Island Community Hospital. Tara wants to take this opportunity and thank the nurses and other medical professionals at Long Island Community Hospital! She states, “Their hard work and dedication have not gone unnoticed during this very difficult time.”

MAKING AN IMPACT - Jamie Lynn Ferro is an ICU nurse at Brookhaven Memorial/Long Island Community Hospital. She expressed concern that the nurses and doctors hands were suffering from the excessive washing and sanitizing. She specified that one one type of lotion would heal their hands. Tara Capolongo, her sister and special education teacher in the Bay Shore School District created a Facebook campaign to reach out to the local community and raise money to purchase these hand creams. Tara was able to raise enough money through donations and ordered 255 lotions for the medical staff at Long Island Community Hospital.

Receives Grant from Bethpage Federal Credit Union Ronkonkoma based nonprofit Options for Community Living, Inc. was awarded a $7,500 grant from Bethpage Federal Credit Union. Funding supports Options’ scattered-site supportive housing program for formerly homeless individuals and families with disabilities and those living with HIV/AIDS. “This award couldn’t have come at a better time,” said Yolanda Robano-Gross, Options Executive Director. “As all Long Islanders struggle with the COVID-19 Pandemic, our residents have been greatly impacted. Our staff is a real lifeline for those with compromised immune systems, dropping off donated meals and food, and providing support to help them stay safe and get through this crisis.” Supportive housing provides a long-term solution to homelessness

for vulnerable people. Last year, Options’ supportive housing program for formerly homeless people with disabilities and those with HIV/AIDS provided housing to more than 200 Long Islanders. uch like St. Patrick’s Day is celebrated by people with no trace of Irish heritage, Cinco de Mayo has become a day of celebration for people who do not trace their ancestry to Mexico. In fact, History.com notes that Cinco de Mayo is a relatively minor holiday in Mexico, where the day commemorates a symbolic yet not significantly strategic win by a heavily outnumbered Mexican army over French forces sent by Napoleon III to establish an empire on Mexican land. In the United States, Cinco de Mayo has become a day to commemorate Mexican culture, including its much-loved cuisine.

Food is front and center at many Cinco de Mayo celebrations. Those who simply want to enjoy some homemade Mexican fare this Cinco de Mayo can try their hands at this recipe for “Fiery Corn Salsa” from Kelley Cleary Coffeen’s “200 Easy Mexican Recipes” (Robert Rose).

FIERY CORN SALSA Makes 2 cups 1⁄4 3

DIRECTIONS In a large bowl, combine oil, lime juice and cilantro. Add tomatoes, corn and jalapeño to taste. Mix well until corn mixture is well coated. Season with salt and pepper to taste. Transfer to an airtight container and refrigerate, stirring occasionally, for 1 hour or up to 2 days. TIP In place of the corn kernels, you can used canned corn, drained; frozen corn, thawed; or corn from the cob, cooked on the stove top. For a smoky flavor, use corn grilled on the barbecue grill.

inco de Mayo celebrates the 1862 defeat of the French by the Mexican army at the Battle of Puebla. That battle occurred during the Franco-Mexican War, which was an invasion of Mexico launched by the French in 1861. The French invaded Mexico as a result of newly elected Mexican President Benito Juarez's decision to suspend interest payments on loans the country took out from foreign countries. France was one such creditor, but the French were not the only country to send troops to Mexico in response to Juarez's decision. Spain and Great Britain also sent troops to Veracruz, but both countries entered negotiations with Mexico and ultimately

withdrew their forces. However, France, under the leadership of Napoleon III, wanted to ensure access to Latin American markets. The French naval fleet's arrival in Veracruz forced President Juarez and his government to retreat. Months later, Juarez's force of 2,000 squared off against 6,000 French troops at the Battle of Puebla. Despite being heavily outnumbered, the Mexican forces claimed victory, losing fewer than 100 men while French casualties numbered nearly 500. While the victory itself did not prove a major win in the war against the French, it symbolized the strength of the Mexican people and served to strengthen the resistance movement. Cinco de Mayo is a minor holiday in Mexico, but has grown into a popular celebration of Mexican culture in the United States.

The Fifth Annual Run for Tomorrow’s Hope 5K Succeeds, Virtually

The Fifth Annual Run for Tomorrow’s Hope, originally scheduled for Saturday, April 4th as a road race on the streets of Garden City has been a virtual success. The event, staged by St. Joseph School in Garden City for the benefit of the Tomorrow’s Hope Foundation, a Long Island charity that provides scholarships for students who attend Long Island Catholic elementary schools, had to adapt very quickly to become a virtual race where competitors chose their own favorite place to run, clocked the distance and time using one of a variety of apps, and took a photo of themselves before, during or after their run. In spite of the unique circumstances, the event had 462 participants in the 5K and 1 mile Fun Run, 312 of them competing in the 5K itself. The event’s Race Director, Dr. Michael Spinelli, a Board Member of the Tomorrow’s Hope Foundation said “I am pleased with the way the community that supports our Catholic schools responded under rather challenging circumstances.” The race, which is run each year in the early spring, is widely supported by the families and friends of Catholic elementary and high schools. This year was no exception, with entries from 7 of the area’s Catholic high schools and with participation from 14 of the island’s Catholic

Who Are Your “Toilet Paper & Paper Towels?” As we still find ourselves enduring this pandemic, we are slowly yet surely seeing the light at the end of the tunnel. T h e r e is talk of re-opening businesses, heightened anxiety seems to be diminishing and the curve has begun to flatten. My thoughts and prayers remain with those in need, as well as those serving on the frontlines. We will continue to stand strong and one day this pandemic will fully be behind us.

If we change our thought process from items to people, which two people in your life do you rely on everyday? Who are your “toilet paper and paper towels?” Sometimes the people we love and rely on the most are the people we take most for granted.

As I take a few moments to reflect on who would be my “toilet paper and paper towels”, I find it’s hard to just choose two. There are so many people who I truly lean on, respect, love and treasure. Just like with those paper products, there are moments where I forget just how important they are to me.
