omeowners looking to add more space to their homes do not necessarily need to make major renovations. They simply have to see the possibilities in outdoor living spaces. Outdoor living spaces are coveted niches in a home. The American Home Furnishings Alliance says more than 70 percent of American households have outdoor living spaces, and nearly 70 percent of people use these spaces at least once per week in-season. Furthermore, homeowners are increasingly interested in enhancing these spaces to make them more usable and comfortable.

Though most breast cancer survivors don’t get cancer again, the American Cancer Society notes that they are at higher risk for getting some types of cancer. According to the ACS, the most common second cancer in breast cancer survivors is another breast cancer. That only underscores the importance of continuing to get screened even after successful treatment. In addition to a second breast cancer, breast cancer survivors have a greater risk of developing salivary gland cancer, cancer of the esophagus, stomach cancer, colon cancer, uterine cancer, and ovarian cancer. The risk for thyroid cancer, sarcoma, melanoma of the skin, and acute myeloid leukemia also is greater after successful treatment for cancer.

Ethical Friends of Children, a program helping needy families on Long Island, seeks clothing (tops, bottoms, pjs, sweaters and socks) in certain sizes. Specific sizes are: GIRLS: 3-4, 4-5 and 9-10 and BOYS: 7-8 and 9-10. Ethical Friends of Children is an outreach

program of the Ethical Humanist Society of Long Island., established in 1985. “We assist more than 2,500 children and their families each year by providing them clothing for children from newborn to size 12 as well as infant furniture at no cost,” says Pat Spencer of Port Washington. National Contest Encourages High School Students To Write Short Essays Exploring Mental Health

In 2021, the U.S. Surgeon General issued an advisory to highlight the urgent need to address the mental health crisis among youth. Prior to the COVID-19 pandemic, up to 1 in 5 children ages 3 to 17 years old experienced mental health challenges. In an effort to address this public health concern and spark conversations about mental health among high schoolers, the National Institutes of Health invites students ages 16 to 18 years old to participate in the “2022 Speaking Up About Mental Health!” essay contest. Essays should explore ways that individuals or society can address or eliminate mental health stigma that young people may face when seeking mental health treatment. The contest, supported by

the National Institute of Mental Health (NIMH), the National Institute on Minority Health and Health Disparities (NIMHD), and the Eunice Kennedy Shriver National Institute of Child Health and Human Development (NICHD), will award multiple winners a total of up to $15,000 in cash prizes. Ideas for essay topics could include: Resilience and coping during challenging times School policies or practices that could help reduce stigma Conversations about mental health or related stigmas Barriers to mental health treatment Other areas of concern to individuals and their communities with respect to mental health

Through these short essays, teens can express their own thoughts and ideas about the mental health challenges they and their peers face. They can also share possible solutions for improving communication and understanding among teens, parents, teachers, guardians, and other caregivers. Additional information: There is no application fee to participate, and entries must be submitted by April 30, 2022 on Challenge.gov. Winners will be announced in September 2022. ne of the ﬁrst steps is to apply a pre-emergent weed killer to get a head start in knocking out weeds that can plague the lawn during the growing season. Killing weeds at the roots early on can mean far fewer hassles in spring and summer, and may prevent new generations of weeds from cropping up each year. While it may be tempting to take a prematurely warm day as a sign that spring is in full force and purchase a bunch of annuals, it’s better to know the last of the possible frost dates (check “The Farmer’s Almanac”). Otherwise, you may waste your time and money planting

Spring Landscaping Tips flowers or vegetables only to have them zapped away by another cold day. Amend the soil so that it is the right consistency — just crumbling when lifting it. Soil that is too muddy after a spring thaw can harden, making it difficult for plants to flourish later on in the season. Speak with representatives at a local lawn and garden center about which types of amendments you can add to your soil in your particular area, in order to enrich your soil. Lawn and garden experts at The Home Depot suggest filling in bare patches of lawn now by mixing a few shovelfuls of soil with grass seed. Then apply this patch to the bare areas, water it, and continue to care for the entire area until the spot fills in. Spend a day in the garage or shed tending to the lawn mower and other gardening equipment. Clean all of your tools and ensure that everything works, repairing parts as needed.

Think about any annuals you might want to plant in the landscape this year that

will complement your existing shrubbery or perennials. Come up with a theme so that the entire yard is cohesive. Before homeowners know it, it is time to once again enjoy long days spent outdoors. Get a jump start on spring lawn prep as soon as you can.

Mock Trial Team Finishes In Top Four In County Tournament

East Islip High School competed in the annual Suffolk County Bar Association Mock Trial Tournament from Feb. 2 through March 23, finishing in the top four out of 30 schools. The case was a criminal matter involving securities fraud. Students met with social studies teacher and mock trial coach Patsy Lester several days a week after school as well as Saturday

mornings to prepare for the tournament. They also received professional coaching from attorney Brian Mitchell, who has been working with the team alongside Lester for 22 years. The team took turns as both prosecution and defense, going undefeated against St. Anthony’s, Deer Park, Sachem, Newfield, St. John’s and John Glenn before falling to Huntington by one point in the county semifinals.

The semifinal round was argued in District Court before Judge Eric Sachs, who commended East Islip’s mastery of the case and their professionalism in the courtroom. “I’m so proud of the way this team bonded and worked together through a very tough competition,” Lester said. “They inspire me with their dedication and team spirit.”

EAST ISLIP ICE HOCKEY CHIEFS WIN CAN/AM CHALLENGE CUP GOLD MEDAL - The East Islip Ice Hockey Chiefs won the CAN/AM Challenge Cup gold medal at the at the Olympic Center in Lake Placid on April 3. The varsity club team won three playoff games in a row – beating the New England Stars by a 6-0 score and CT Mayhem by 7-2 on April 1, and the Boston Jr. Terriers by 6-5 on April 2 – to head to the championship game for the Grenoble 16U League. Hope for Youth www.hfyny.org Hope for Youth is an Amityville-based, notfor-proﬁt organization that works to facilitate positive change in the lives of Long Island children, youth and families.

Nationwide, 45 percent of foster children reside in a foster family home with a nonrelative, while 34 percent are with a foster family home with a relative. For 54 percent of foster children, the goal is to reunite the child with a parent or primary caretaker. The goal is adoption for 28 percent. On Long Island, Hope For Youth is a central player in the identiﬁcation and training of foster families. All Hope For Youth foster families receive multiple certiﬁcations in parenting skills. Foster parents take part in mandated educational workshops throughout the course of the year.

The team members at Hope For Youth are keenly aware of the unique role that kinship caregivers play in working to achieve reuniﬁcation for children and youth in foster care. This focus helps to keep moving the system toward one that truly supports families. The organization also participates in “Wendy’s Wonderful Kids,” part of the Dave Thomas Foundation for Adoption. Under this program, Hope For Youth has two adoption recruiters who bring children waiting to be adopted from foster care closer to safe, loving and permanent homes. The Foundation’s adoption recruitment model has proven effective nationwide in serving children who’ve been in foster care the longest. Hope For Youth is always looking for new foster parents. They also welcome volunteer and charitable donations to help advance its foster care work, and to advance all of its programming in support of children Island-wide who deserve more stable and fulﬁlling lives. In this article we focus on their vital role in promoting foster care across Long Island. As next month is quickly approaching, it is appropriate to mention that May is National Foster Care Month, an initiative conducted through the US Department of Health and Human Services. The month is devoted to “ensuring a bright future for more than 407,000 children and youth in foster care.” The average age is 8 years old for those children, and there is just about an event split between how many of them are boys and how many are girls. The month acknowledges foster parents, family members, volunteers, policymakers and others who help children and youth in foster care ﬁnd permanent homes and connections.

we have all had, the 2022 Parade will honor the first responders and essential workers for their sacrifice, service and selflessness during the past two years. “The phone has been ringing constantly,” remarked Teatro Yerbabruja’s ExecutiveArtistic Director and founder, Margarita Espada. “After two years of little if any opportunity for joyful celebration,” she continued, “we’re all running toward the light at the end of the COVID tunnel, and this
