The students explored how sound is produced by each instrument, and learned songs and listened to authentic music from each country.

Lending Support They were bold, beautiful and bodacious; and the over 75 unique pieces of “bra art” were auctioned off for a good cause on the evening of Thursday, April 14th at the “Bodacious Bras for a Cure” event. Caregivers, patients, survivors, healthcare workers and artists from local high schools, the North Shore Art Guild, Brookhaven Arts Council and LI Craft Guild were among some of the designers who crafted these empowering pieces

of art for the event. Others were crafted or inspired by celebrity contestants like actor Ralph Macchio, NY Mets pitcher Steven Matz, former NY Jets Marty Lyons and Erik Coleman, Victoria’s Secret Angel Lindsay Ellingson, Radio personality Fingers from WBAB, the NY Yankees, the NY Islanders, and the NY Rangers. The night kicked off at the Charles B. Wang Center at Stony Brook University, where these creative bras were all on display and

guests were able to put in their bid during the silent auction. The reception started with former New York Jets great Marty Lyons giving the keynote address, sharing his personal experiences with loved-ones who battled cancer and thoughts on why fundraising efforts and events like “Bodacious Bras” are important in finding a cure. The auction gavel hit and the live bidding began with a bang as NFL alum Erik Coleman’s bra was

Residents need to be vigilant against unsolicited phone calls and internet scams. In 2012, Suffolk County Legislator Sarah Anker partnered with the Suffolk County Police Department to create a scam alert website, www.scpdscamalert.org. The website was one of Legislator Anker’s first initiatives upon entering office, and is an important resource to warn residents about common phone and internet scams, and illegal money schemes. Since launching the website in 2012, Legislator Anker has worked diligently with

auctioned off for $1,500. Between the auctions and ticket sales, the event raised nearly $35,000. The proceeds will support patient programs at Stony Brook University Cancer Center. “We are so excited that this year’s event was so successful,” said Linda Bily, Director, Cancer Patient Advocacy & Community Outreach,

The American Heart Association’s 7th Annual Healing Heart 5K Run/ Walk will be held on Sunday, May 15th, on the property of the beautiful Pugliese Vineyards in the heart of the Long Island wine country in Cutchogue. More than 700 runners are expected. Day of event registration begins at 8:00 a.m., with the fun run for children 10 and under beginning at 10:00 a.m. and the 3.1 mile off road race beginning at 10:15 a.m. Following the race, the awards ceremony will take place at 11:15 a.m. with awards being given to the top male and female runners along with the top runners in various age categories. A health expo will also be available during the event open to all participants. The Healing Heart 5K hopes to raise awareness that heart disease is the number one killer of men and women across the country and here on Long Island. The event creates a culture of health and physical activity, giving families the opportunity to participate in heart healthy activities together. As I often do when beset with burdens, I took to the wharf down by the bay To view the choppy waters have their way. Five minutes passed, and my concerns began to fade; Nature had spun its magic, majestic and unafraid. Soon I noticed people in cars surround me, Sharing this comfort the scene implored. It’s nice to know there are others Eager to find a moment like this And take the time to explore. Refreshed and encouraged, I began to take my leave, And in the rearview mirror the scene began to fade; But the choice to come was a choice well made.

I am thankful for my mom and dad. They are the water and sunlight to my plant. They’re the only true role models in my life. They pay the bills, put food in my stomach, and put clothes on my back. They are the most important things in my life. I am thankful for my mom. She is the star in my galaxy. She turned me into the nice gentlemen I am today. She fought through mental illness

two times. She taught how to act respectfully around people she puts in charge of me. She is the main reason I love to be alive. Also, if it weren’t for her, I wouldn’t be in Pal football. I wouldn’t be able deal with my grandfather’s recent trip to the E.R. I wouldn’t be able to keep going in life. Those are many reasons I am thankful for my mom. I am thankful for my dad. He’s the anchor in our ship. My dad makes

sure that the family is stable. He taught me how to defend myself, to ride a bike, and to be safe on the Internet. He makes me happy when I’m depressed. Also, he tells me what my dead grandfather expected of me. He taught me to be respectful to him and to the elderly. He gives donations to foundations for breast cancer and autism. Those are reason why I’m thankful for my dad.

The Hourglass By: Jamie Lynn Ryan There are moments that stay with you. Forever. And people, people who leave an indelible imprint on our lives, one that simply does not fade with the passage of time. How lucky we are to have those memories, those associations. How deeply we should treasure them… Time is the one thing we never seem to have quite enough of. It’s a precious commodity, one often taken for granted right up until the moment that it runs out. One day runs into the next – and we

often neglect those things and people we should have paid more attention to along the way. Be thoughtful. Be kind. Be compassionate. Each and every day, to whomever you meet, but mostly to those family and friends who are most important to you. Those are the gestures that will stand the test of time – the gatherings full of laughter and love, the conversations, the greeting cards and gifts, the time spent together. Life is destined to have its fair share of sadness; all we can do is try to minimize the regrets along the way.

Imagine how you would like to be treated, and do your best to emulate that in your interactions with others. It’s the simplest of concepts, really, but its effects are far-reaching. The most important thing is to appreciate those moments – the ones that stay with you – right then, while they are happening. You just never know when it might be the last opportunity. Such is the bittersweet nature of life; the great unknown. May we all be so fortunate to have memories worth treasuring along the way.

Medical Career Day In partnership with Northwell Health’s Southside Hospital, East Islip High School’s Medical and Health Technology Career Academy hosted its fourth annual Medical Career Day on March 24th, replete with guest speakers, hands-on exhibits and career information tables. More than 50 clinical and non-clinical medical professionals, including Northwell Health coordinators Vincent Cunningham, Ed Fraser,

Kim Schwalb and Roy Timm, participated in the educational event, which included 25 exhibit tables in the gym, 22 medical presenters in the library and forum, and a blood drive held by the school’s Science Honor Society. “Medical Awareness Day provides all of our students with an opportunity to learn about the many different career paths that are available to them in a hospital or medical setting,” said Career

Academy director Israel Malinowitzer. “These students are given advice on different paths that they can take to ultimately find the career that is best for them. The medical professionals at this event have been attending this event every year for the last four years, and they all agree that they wished they had this opportunity when they were going to high school.”

East Islip High School’s Mock Trial team won the first round of the Suffolk County playoffs on March 16th. The prosecution team successfully argued their case against Comsewogue High School before the Hon. Anthony Senft in U.S. District Court in Central Islip, qualifying them for the Suffolk County Elite Eight round. The lawyers for East Islip were Brittney Baker, Bella Pizzuto and Katrina Shea, and the witnesses were Steve Geiseler, Emma McGaugh and Kierstin O’Hara. “Our team was thrilled to have the support of many parents, family members and friends who came out to watch the

trial,” said team adviser Patricia Lester. On March 23rd, East Islip defeated longtime rivals William Floyd in the Elite Eight competition at District Court, extending their undefeated season to 6-0. The case was argued before the Hon. Judge Robert Cicale, with defense lawyers Madison Lane, Jessica Muroff and Joe Teknus facing off against a tough and polished prosecution team from Floyd. Outstanding performances by East Islip witnesses O’Hara, Pizzuto and Christian Thomesen helped seal the verdict in East Islip’s favor. Pizzuto proved particularly impressive as she stepped

in at the last minute as a substitute for a sick teammate who could not compete. East Islip went on to compete in the Suffolk County Final Four, held at the District Court on April 6th. While losing in the semifinals, the team finished among the top 32 teams in New York State Mock Trial Tournament. They later competed in two single-day events, finishing in the quarterfinals at Long Island Law Day and in second place at the Plainview-Old Bethpage John. F. Kennedy High School Moot Court Tournament on April 7th.

Special Career Education high school students and three and four-year-old preschoolers were treated to a Cornell Cooperative Extension presentation, Birds of a Feather. The presentation included a story, a craft, and a hands-on experience with a chicken and a duck. Agricultural Educator June DeVitto brought a domestic chicken, Butterscotch, and an Indian Runner Duck, Fudgecake, to the Early Childhood Education

(ECE) Program at Islip Career Center in Eastern Suffolk BOCES. DeVitto has been an educator with Cornell Cooperative Extension for over 22 years and is amazed at how many people have never touched a chicken or a duck. “The presentation is geared to the preschoolers but it is a learning experience for everyone,” she said. ECE Teacher Rachel Grodofsky said, “This presentation offers

something to both the high school and preschool audience. It highlights comprehension skills. The high school students learn how to work with very inquisitive young minds; best of all, everyone gets to use their five senses.” High school students in the ECE Program are preparing for careers working with children. They are getting career ready to be camp counselors, work in nursery schools, or as child care providers. Grodofsky said, “These high school students are learning how to be effective classroom leaders.” June DeVitto wanted everyone to learn how to handle animals properly and to be gentle. “Kids grow up and they want a pet,” she said. “I want them to learn about the animal world and gain a respect for life. I want them to use their senses and I hope the program heightens their awareness of other things that are around them in the world.”

Playable Percussion Joining the worlds of art and music, secondgraders in Christina SperaBartlett’s art classes and Kathleen Carter’s music classes at East Islip’s Timber Point Elementary School collaborated to create traditional percussion instruments of the Americas for display at Timber Point’s Curriculum Cruise event held on March 29th. The students “upcycled”

items such as paper towel rolls, coffee cans, paper plates and water bottles to construct playable instruments from South America and North America such as guiros, maracas, drums and rain sticks. The second-graders then used their artistic skills to decorate the instruments with traditional colors and designs from each country. They explored how sound is produced

by each instrument, and learned songs and listened to authentic music from each country. “The students worked cooperatively and their designs were extremely colorful and well thought out,” said Spera-Bartlett. “We are very proud of their hard work in making the project a great success,” added Carter.

Big Fish Islip High School’s theater program, which earned Best Ensemble recognition at last year’s Islip Arts Council Teeny Awards, wowed audiences again with the school’s 2016 production of the new musical “Big Fish.” Due to ongoing construction at the high school auditorium, the three April performances of “Big Fish” were held at the Noel S. Ruiz Theater at CM Performing Arts

Center in Oakdale. “Big Fish,” based on a 1998 Daniel Wallace novel and 2003 Tim Burton film adaptation, takes place in Alabama in the 20th century and revolves around the relationship between a traveling salesman with cancer and a penchant for tall tales, and his estranged adult son. The music and lyrics were written by Andrew Lippa, with a book by John August based on his screenplay for

the movie version. “Despite the change in venue, the community helped to make this one of our most successful productions to date,” said Vincent Green, the district’s director of fine and performing arts. “The staff at the Noel S. Ruiz Theatre were outstanding to work with and our talented students put on an engaging, emotional and musically extraordinary production.”

Tee-Off for Teens

The Long Island Council on Alcoholism and Drug Dependence (LICADD) will be hosting its 5th Annual Tee-Off for Our Teens tournament at the Sebonack Golf Club, Southampton, on Tuesday, May 17th, 2016. Seventy-two golfers will have the opportunity to play on one of Long Island’s most exclusive courses, enjoy spectacular views overlooking The Great Peconic Bay and help to support the programs and services LICADD provides to all Long Islanders. Sebonack was the host of the 2013 U.S. Women’s Open. The course opened in 2006 was designed by progolfers, Jack Nicklaus and Tom Doak and is adjacent to the National Golf Links of America and Shinnecock Hills Golf Club. Sponsorships are available and include priority tee-off, two tee signs and your corporate banner display. Individual players are $1,250 or $4,000 for a foursome. Registration begins at 11:30 a.m with plenty of time to practice putting and enjoy lunch before the shotgun start at 1 p.m. Early reservations are highly recommended for this exclusive course. Islip High School’s Science Olympiad team finished in 20th place overall in the 31st annual New York State competition, held in March at Le Moyne College in Syracuse. It was the third consecutive year that the team has qualified for the event, where they competed against the top 54 New York high schools, winnowed down from the more than 400 schools that originally competed in the individual regional competitions across the state. Previously, the school’s best finish at the state competition was 38th place in 2005. The team, led by senior

and captain Lauren Schadt, also included seniors Schuyler Dineen, Sean Dineen, Alex Geneci, Brian Lithen, Wendy TullyGustafson and Amber Yildizel; juniors James O’Halloran and Brendan Mercado; sophomores Grace Constantino, Julia Hormann, Morgiana McDevitt, Kyle Ness and Anthony Zavala; and freshman Matt Southard. In addition to reaching 20th place overall as a team, four paired medals were earned, including fifth place in the Green Generation event by Schuyler Dineen and Zavala, sixth place in Robot Arm by Sean Dineen and Geneci and sixth place in

Dynamic Planet and 10th place in Remote Sensing by Schuyler Dineen and Lithen. “This was a tremendous year in the history of the Science Olympiad program at the high school, and a huge accomplishment for our Islip students,” said Matthew Christiansen, the high school’s science/ business chairperson. “This could not have been possible without the hard work and commitment of assistant coach Kelly Mackey and Islip’s science and technology departments, and the support of our administrators, teachers, Board of Education and community.”

LICADD delivers prevention programs aimed at bolstering children and young adults’ selfesteem, confidence and communication with peers and parents, before they are presented with the choice to use alcohol and drugs. Too Good for Drugs, which is designed for children in kindergarten through 12th grade, builds students’ resiliency by teaching them how to be socially competent and autonomous problem solvers. Under the Student Assistance Program (SAP), these resources are available in schools throughout Long Island and continue to expand into new school districts each month. For young people displaying signs of alcohol and drug abuse, Teen Intervene offers a month-long combination of individual and parentpresent counseling sessions focused on charting a different direction that includes abstinence and healthier coping strategies. “Long Islanders remain unaware that the number of teens affected

by prescription drug, heroin and alcohol abuse continues to rise each day, and the expanding need for services is staggering,” said LICADD Executive Director Steve Chassman, LCSW, CASAC. “We need our community to become a part of the solution by participating in the Tee-Off for Our Teens and supporting programs that save teen’s lives and restore families.” For 60 years, LICADD has successfully delivered evidence-based programs designed to prevent and treat substance abuse and addiction. LICADD offers crisis intervention, screenings, referrals to treatment and several family education workshops to help Long Islanders struggling with the effects of addiction.
