We are looking to hire one Inside Advertising Account Representative to work in our Farmingdale office and one Outside Advertising Account Representative to work in a local territory and represent our company for our weekly newspapers, our seasonal magazine and our print, deliver and insert programs.

Just last weekend, I was able to satisfy my urge for a little springtime strolling in the city when the opportunity arose to accompany a friend from college to several New York Bridal Fashion Week runway shows. While I was initially far more interested in the aimless wandering aspect of the day, I have to admit I was pleasantly surprised by the experience of attending these avant-garde displays. Never having heard of the featured designers prior to seeing their latest collections in person, they proved to be quite impressive. Sure, I could have done without the crowns of flowers as accent, and I’m fairly certain I will not be accessorizing any future bridal gowns with high-top sneakers; but, quirks aside, some of the styles were quite stunning when viewed more as works of art rather than practical fashion. At the close of one of the shows, the audience was caught

off guard by an impromptu wedding proposal, orchestrated by the boyfriend of one of the featured models. As she stood aghast, he expressed his love and desire to spend the rest of his life with the woman before him, saying he could think of no more appropriate venue to pop the question than on a runway in the midst of bridal week. Judging by the standing ovation delivered by the crowd - among them, the family of the blushing bride-to-be - it seemed he couldn’t have picked a more opportune moment, one they will surely treasure forever. Bridal business aside, we managed to squeeze in some sightseeing on what happened to be one of the warmest days we have been graced with so far this season. From the Flatiron District over to the West Village, we traversed a solid six miles or so of the downtown area, taking in the nuances of each neighborhood and - of

course - finding time to snap some photos along the way. It was during an ill-fated “selfie” attempt in front of the Flatiron Building that a kind woman took pity on us and offered to take the photo, saying, “I know it’s probably taboo to walk up to random strangers and volunteer to take their picture, but you two seemed like you could use a little help.” Why yes, we could indeed. Score one for acts of kindness from fellow tourists. In all, it was a day short on the sort of haphazard adventure which has become the norm with most New York City day trips I have ventured on; actually, quite seamless. It’s funny, the tendency to almost miss the chaos when things go according to plan. I’ll have to remind myself of that irony the next time I’m traipsing 50 blocks out of the way to make a reservation at the third restaurant on the list, while carrying my shoes.

World Language Awards Islip High School students Guadalupe Gomez and Madeline Marconi were recently honored with prestigious national world language awards by the Sociedad Honoraria Hispanica, an honor society for high school students studying Spanish or Portuguese.

Recognized for their dedication to the study of Spanish and excellent skills in that language, the two students were presented with their awards by their Spanish teacher and World Language Honor Society adviser, Karen Maisano, along with Principal Michael Mosca,

and Priscilla Zarate, the district’s ENL and world language coordinator. Islip has maintained an active chapter of the Sociedad Honoraria Hispanica for the last 22 years. Gomez, a junior, won the 2018 Bertie Green Junior Travel Award for her dedication to the study of

I am looking forward to experiencing the Ecuadorian culture and learning about the country.” Marconi, a senior, won the 2018 Joseph Adams Senior Scholarship, a $1,000 scholarship awarded to only 60 students from more than 2,400 national SHH chapters. “I am so incredibly proud to have received this award,” said Marconi. “I

Local Artist Chosen Elaine Faith Thompson, a Long Island native from Bohemia, is back at Shinnecock Hills Golf Club. The United States Golf Association has chosen her as one of several artists who will paint a limitededition, fine-art print commemorating the 2018 U.S. Open Championship. The 118th U.S. Open will be contested June 14th17th, at Shinnecock Hills in Southampton. Thompson felt honored to receive the phone call on December 6th and to have been commissioned

to paint the golf course for the 118th U.S. Open Championship. She spent the following two days photographing the magnificent golf course and clubhouse. Given her roots, Thompson has worked on many paintings for USGA championships in Long Island and the New York Metropolitan area. Her first golf painting was of Bethpage State Park’s Black Course for the 2002 U.S. Open. She also worked with the USGA on posters for the 2004 U.S. Open at

Shinnecock Hills, the 2006 U.S. Open at Winged Foot Golf Club, the 2009 U.S. Open at Bethpage Black and the 2013 U.S. Women’s Open at Sebonack Golf Club. Limited edition prints will be available soon. Thompson is also well known for her New York and Long Island scenic works, including: lighthouses; The Big Duck; Theodore Roosevelt’s home at Sagamore Hill; Fire Island; Riverhead Raceway and the Peconic River; Aqueduct and Roosevelt

Raceways; Smithtown Bull; Downtown Sayville and Schoolhouse; Mount Sinai Garden; Lady Golfer at Timber Point Timber; and the Statue of Liberty. Her portraits include “Pope Francis in America,” Derek Jeter, John Heisman, and George Washington at Valley Forge. Her other portraits are of pets, houses, cars, boats, motorcycles and planes, all painted in selected scenes. At the reception Thompson will also be displaying other art including very affordable prints which

make great personalized gifts for Mother’s Day and Father’s Day. The most famous commission that Thompson received was from President Ronald Reagan for the official poster design of the National Vietnam Veterans Memorial Statue in Washington, D.C. Students at East Islip’s Timber Point Elementary School recently celebrated Heart Month by learning all about the heart and circulatory system as well as the importance of exercise for personal heart fitness. During physical education classes with Patricia Bush and Diane Wahrenburg, the students

participated in healthy heart stations that got their hearts pumping. One station even imitated the body’s actual circulatory system in delivering oxygen to the muscles and bringing carbon dioxide back to the heart and lungs. Students also learned about the anatomy and function of the heart, lungs and circulatory

system through viewing posters as visual aids and watching videos on the school’s Smart Board. “Many students found these body systems to be fascinating and participated in the healthy heart stations with enthusiasm,” said Wahrenburg. “Healthy hearts are happy hearts.”

Although there is no deﬁnitive way to prevent dementia, living a long, vibrant life may be possible by encouraging some healthy habits for the brain. It is never too late or too early to begin health and lifestyle changes.

Exercise

Becoming more active can improve brain volume, reduce risk for dementia and improve thinking and memory skills. The journal Neurology found that older people who vigorously exercise performed better on cognitive tests than others of the same age, placing them at the equivalent of 10 years younger. Increased blood ﬂow that occurs with physical activity may help generate new neurons in the hippocampus, an area of the brain involved with learning and memory. The Harvard Medical School says aerobic exercise may help improve brain tissue by improving blood ﬂow and reducing the chances of injury to the brain from cholesterol buildup in blood vessels.

Quit Smoking

The Alzheimer’s Association indicates that evidence shows smoking increases the risk of cognitive decline. Smoking can impair blood ﬂow to the brain and cause small strokes that may damage blood vessels.

Engaging in mentally stimulating activities can create new brain connections and more backup circuits, states Dr. Joel Salinas, a neurologist at Harvard-afﬁliated Massachusetts General Hospital. Working the brain through puzzles, reading and participating in social situations can stimulate the release of brain-derived neurotrophic factor (BDNF), a molecule essential for repairing brain cells and creating connections between them. A good way to combine these lifestyle factors is to take an exercise class with friends, mixing the social, stimulation and exercise recommendations together. Cognitive decline can come with aging, but through healthy habits, people can reduce their risk of memory loss and dementia.

Friends of Karen is a nonprofit organization that supports critically-ill children and their families. This year, they are celebrating their 40th anniversary; four decades of bringing help, hope and support to over 15,000 children and their families in the tri-state area. In 1978, Friends of Karen began with one family, one child, Karen MacInnes; and one inspired woman, Sheila Petersen, who wanted to sustain her close friends through the devastating illness of their daughter. Today, Friends of Karen serves hundreds of families by providing emotional, financial and advocacy support to children with life-threatening illnesses, and to their families in order to help keep them stable, functioning and able to cope, at no cost. To apply for help, a parent or guardian of the ill child must call the organization and speak to a member of their Family Support Team. Friends of Karen often hosts or participates in many events within their community. On Saturday, May 5th and Sunday, May 6th, they are hosting a team in the Long Island Marathon at Eisenhower Park in East Meadow. Saturday will be a 5K and Sunday will be a 10K. We want to do everything we can to keep these drugs from falling in to the wrong hands. This is a hugely important community service we’re proud to provide.” Unused prescription medications can be a temptation for curious teenagers and others to experiment with opiates or other drugs. Northwell Health has made one of its missions to help curb the opioid epidemic in New York State through its Northwell Health Opioid Management Steering Committee, which is an outgrowth of the successful pilot program at Southside Hospital. There were 2,726 deaths related to opioids in New York State in 2015, according to the New York State Department of Health, up from 2,256 the prior year. New York City saw 893 of those deaths; there were 463 more on Long Island. “Hearing these staggering numbers each year breaks my heart and has prompted us at Northwell Health to aggressively work in a variety of ways to try to lessen the amount of opiate and prescription drug abuse in our area,” said Jonathan Morgenstern, PhD, assistant vice president of addiction services at Northwell

Health. “People bringing their unused prescriptions to these sites can help us make an impact on the opioid epidemic.” In addition to removing unused prescriptions drugs from the community, Northwell Health is working on several initiatives to target opioid abuse from screening and life-saving techniques to offering treatment: Northwell’s screening, brief intervention and referral to treatment (SBIRT) program helps identify potential issues by screening patients during routine medical visits. South Oaks Hospital in Amityville offers free naloxone training and rescue kits to community members. Naloxone, otherwise known as narcan, is a nasal spray that is used when someone has overdosed to try to reverse the situation. Northwell, in conjunction with the Engel Burman Group, are in the process of building a substance abuse treatment residence in Calverton on eastern long Island. Southside Hospital has a secure prescription return location available 24/7 in the hospital’s lobby. Nine Northwell Health facilities will be participating in this year’s National Prescription Drug Take Back Day on April 28th, which is an opportunity for people to take unused and expired prescriptions and safely remove them from their homes. Southside Hospital in Bay Shore; Peconic Bay Medical Center in Riverhead; Huntington Hospital; North Shore University Hospital in Manhasset; Long Island Jewish Medical Center in New Hyde Park; Northern Westchester Hospital in Mt. Kisco; Phelps Hospital in Sleepy Hollow; and Lenox Hill Hospital and Lenox Health Greenwich Village in Manhattan will have receptacles at the hospitals for people to safely deposit these leftover prescriptions from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Northwell Health collected more than 300 pounds of unused prescriptions during National Prescription Drug Take Back Day last October. The latest event is organized by the Drug Enforcement Association. “It was so gratifying to see the large quantity of unneeded and expired drugs brought to Northwell Health facilities last drug take back day in October,” said Peg Butler, Northwell Health’s assistant vice president of marketing and external relations who helped organize last year’s efforts in Manhattan as well

Outreach Center Opens National Grid just opened its new Consumer Advocacy Outreach Center in Brentwood, where we will be able to give our most vulnerable and income-eligible customers the programs, services and one-on-one attention they need to meet their home energy needs. “We are excited to broaden our reach and help more customers who need and deserve it most,” said John Bruckner, President, National Grid New York. “The new Brentwood Consumer Advocacy Center is just one more example of how we’re assisting customers and communities on Long Island and across New York State. We have been investing in our systems, our people, and in programs to provide safe and reliable service to our customers. We have hired 380 new employees including new consumer advocates and field/office customers service professionals. We have upgraded our Liquefied Natural Gas (LNG) facilities, reduced estimated bills through Automated Meter Reading (AMR), built a state-of-the-art Gas Control Center, and improved our billing system. We have also established a thirdparty payment center with Western Union, where customers will not be assessed the pre-transaction fee. To best serve our low-income customers on Long Island, we’ve recently hired additional Consumer Advocates. As part of our newly expanded team, advocates covering Long Island will connect customers to programs and services we offer at National Grid, as well as those offered by local community and governmental agencies. They will also provide energy efficiency tips and gas safety information, while working with customers individually to meet their specific needs. Services Include: • Bill payment and food pantry assistance • Community expos, where advocates partner with local community agencies to offer a one-stop-shop for customers • Presentations to consumer groups and agencies

on topics including: financial assistance programs, energy-saving tips and payment options • A bi-lingual advocate available to speak to our Latino customers • Clean energy workshops to help customers manage their energy footprint and energy bills • Customized billing for the disabled, such as largeprint, braille, and third-party notifications Our advocates will also give customers information on programs, services and special protections including: Energy Affordability Program (EAP)

EAP offers a monthly bill credit to customers enrolled in the federally funded Home Energy Assistance Program (HEAP) or a similar qualifying program. EAP bill credits are based on the customer’s HEAP benefits (which provide the greatest benefits to households with the greatest needs). Low Income Energy Assistance Program (LIHEAP) LIHEAP is a federally funded financial assistance program available to help income eligible households and individuals pay their home heating costs. It is not

a loan – i.e., customers do not have to pay back money they receive. Project Warmth This emergency assistance program helps families and individuals meet their fuel costs. Project Warmth provides a one-time grant for fuel, plus an additional amount for fuel-related electricity. Customers can use the heating grant to pay for any fuel source, such as oil, gas, electric, propane, etc. National Grid sponsors the program, which is administered through United Way of Long Island. Medical Hardship This is a ‘special protections’ program to protect a customer’s household when a resident in the home suffers from a serious illness or medical condition that severely affects his/her well-being. Hospitalized Customer Assistance Program allows customers who are temporarily disabled due to hospitalization to pay their bill up to 30 days past its due date. Increased Low Income Funding/ Discounts Low Income Order A structured, multi-tiered approach provides monthly discounts to qualifying heating and non-heating customers in New York City and on Long Island. Customers will pay no more than 6% of their annual income on their energy bill, meaning customers with the most need will get the biggest benefits. Conversion Rebate Program Up to 100 customers in both KEDNY and KEDLI’s Residential Reduced Rate programs will be entitled to receive a rebate of up to $7,500 if they convert their homes to natural gas and install efficient heating equipment.
