The annual Foreign Language Week brought exciting activities and celebrations of French, Italian and Spanish language and culture as well as American Sign Language to East Islip High School during the first week of March, confirming the importance of studying world languages. For the day devoted to American Sign Language, advanced ASL students
interpreted popular songs, taught basic signs and played fun games in the library to spread deaf awareness to their fellow peers who are enrolled in a foreign language. As part of the week’s initiative, students were asked to participate in a poster contest to encourage learning new languages, with this year’s theme being “Explore a Language, The World
Needs You!” The winners, selected by art teacher Daniel Figliozzi, were awarded with Barnes & Noble gift certificates provided by the high school’s former language director, Dr. Janet Hiller. Genesis Madera-Blondet earned first place for her poster, while Ella Centauro came in second, Olivia Zhang took third and Madison Sturtz earned honorable mention.

During the ceremonies at the NYS Assembly, the scouts were recognized when they presented the State of the Boy Scouts in Suffolk County Council (BSA). They presented on the state of Scouting in all of New York - youth members served, community hours given, and projects completed for community organizations. In addition, youth heard from leaders about the importance of of community service and how being actively involved will serve them throughout their lives. Youth had a chance to meet and greet and take photos with various leaders. Explained Eagle Scout Michael VanLoon of Troop 125 (Commack), “I did not speak to the assembly, but the people that did get the opportunity to speak spoke about the opportunities that Scouting has provided them, such as camping and developing citizenship in a way that many of their peers had never
been able to experience. Additionally, one young lady that spoke was able to do the same activities that her brother had been able to do through his own troop, once Scouting had recently opened up to girls across the country.” The teens included members of the Girlonly and Boy-only Scout Troops, Cub Scout Packs, and the Middle Island Fire Department’s Co-Ed Explorer Post 9515. In addition to the presentation to the State Legislature, Eagle Scout Aiden Donnelly of Troop 362 (Centereach) was presented with the Silver Badge Hornaday Award. Eagle Scout Michael VanLoon of Troop 125 (Commack), representing the Order of the Arrow (the National BSA Honor Society), additionally said “It’s great to see that our state officials continue to show their support for Scouting as we keep the Scouting program alive and strong in Suffolk County.”

Suffolk County Council (BSA)’s representatives participated at the annual New York State of the State in Albany on February 24, 2020. The youth members and their adult volunteer leaders of the Scouts BSA Troops participated in this event and were given a tour of the NYS Capitol. The scouts presented the legislature with an update on how well scouting is serving the Suffolk County community and each of the Cub Scouts, Boy Scouts, and Explorers had a chance to speak to the NYS representatives as they shared this information. The 19 youth members and their ten adult Scouting leaders (among others scouts from NY State) had a lunch in the Legislative Building and took a photo with Senator Martinez following a tour of the Capitol Building. The Scouts and Adult leaders listened to New York State Comptroller Thomas DiNapoli, as well as Senator John Flanagan and Senator Monica Martinez speak about their support for the Scouting

Public demand for environmental safeguards grew in the second half of the twentieth century, and those demands have grown stronger in recent years. Legislation is continually evolving to protect the air, land and water. Sustainability has joined the buzzwords of the movement, and most industries now have a vested interest in changes that can minimize risk to human health and the environment. Mitigating or avoiding environmental effects, proper waste disposal, reduction in water discharge, and emphasis on reducing, reusing and recycling have become important components of environmental wellness. And people are being educated at earlier stages on the importance of environmental mindfulness. For example, core subjects of the environmental movement are increasingly covered in elementary schools. Twenty million people turned out for the first Earth Day in the United States. Today, more than 190 countries are engaged and more than one billion individuals are mobilized for action every Earth Day, advises the Earth Day Network. To mark the 50th anniversary, the most pressing topic for the year is climate change. Climate Action is the 2020 Earth Day theme to engage the global public. Reduce, reuse, recycle is a mantra for many people. It’s difficult to imagine that just 50 years ago awareness of the state of the environment was not part of the collective consciousness. An emerging public consciousness about the planet began amid environmental issues like increased air pollution and massive consumption of fossil fuels in the 1960s. The bestselling book “Silent Spring” by Rachel Carson also raised public concern for living organisms and the links between pollution and public health. The push for environmental reform gained even more momentum on April 22, 1970, when the first Earth Day was celebrated. Then-Senator Gaylord Nelson from Wisconsin put Earth Day on the national stage following a large oil spill that struck off the coast of Santa Barbara, Calif. Before this disaster, recycling was not a word in the popular lexicon. But when the disaster struck, people began to reason that changes would have to be made to save the planet. Since the first Earth Day 50 years ago, many strides have been made in the environmental movement. This grassroots initiative gave rise to the establishment of the Environmental Protection Agency, the Clean Air Act and the Clean Water Act. Environmental awareness has become much more mainstream and is a less polarizing issue than it was in the 1970s, although there are still debates about the reality of climate change and other risk factors.

Stony Brook University Hospital Accepting i-Pad Donations for Telehealth Distancing Measures Members of the community have been reaching out and asking how they can help the healthcare professionals and those afflicted with COVID-19 pandemic. One very important way: we need an influx of iPads to keep our inpatients connected to their providers and their families. Anyone who has an iPad that is not being used, please consider donating to Stony Brook University Hospital. We will repurpose the donated device to provide telecommunication for our patients to connect
with our medical staff. We are looking for about one hundred devices of a supported iPad model. Before donation, the device should be cleaned, reset (click here for instructions), and placed in a zip lock bag if possible with a viable power chord. It takes a team effort to convert these devices into a secure patient friendly solution. We will do our best to make your gift count and give someone comfort during these remarkable times. The donations of medical supplies and comfort care items such as gum, lip balm, tissues and
snacks have been pouring in and we appreciate the community’s response. We’ve also received many video messages of support and are sharing those throughout the hospital. Please keep them coming! Spanish students a number of activities and games to enrich their language proficiency skills. The participating high school students are encouraged to immerse themselves in the language by speaking
only Italian or Spanish for the entire day, while the seventh graders have the opportunity to hear the language being modeled and also practice their vocabulary.

Essential Staff Providing Care For Animals On Campus Amid Coronavirus (Covid19) Pandemic North Shore Animal League America’s Adoption Center is currently conducting adoption by appointment only. Our Adoption Team is contacting pre-approved adopters with a scheduled day and time to complete their adoption. The health and wellbeing of NSALA staff, volunteers, adopters, and the community remains our priority at this time. We currently have over 40 dogs of various ages and sizes on campus, as well as more than 100 felines, from kittens to older cats, all looking for loving homes. As always, the animals on the NSALA Port Washington campus are being well-cared for by our devoted staff. In addition to finding homes for more than 110 canines, some of whom were from our recent Mill Dog rescue (we saved 100 dogs and puppies from deplorable
conditions with some going to our area shelter partners,) we have also placed more than 30 animals into foster homes. During this time, the Alex Lewyt Veterinary Medical Center will remain open to see sick patients and emergency cases only. How Does The New Coronavirus Affect You And Your Pets?
Pet owners can rest easy that there is no reason to believe that dogs or cats in the United States might be a source of infection for the new coronavirus disease — COVID-19 — or cause its spread according to the Centers for Disease Control (CDC) in Atlanta, Georgia. And so far, according to the CDC, there have been no reports of pets becoming sick with COVID-19. This coronavirus appears to be primarily transmitted from human to human. As a pet owner, you may have heard of canine coronavirus, an intestinal infection in dogs, especially puppies, and feline coronavirus, which can cause feline infectious peritonitis (FIP). These types of coronaviruses have been around for quite some time and are not associated with the current outbreak. To protect yourself, your family, and possibly even
your pets, from this new coronavirus, you should follow these precautions: • Frequently wash your hands thoroughly with soap and water (use hand sanitizer with more than 60 percent alcohol if you can’t wash) • Avoid close contact with people who are sick—stay at least three feet away • Cover your mouth/ nose with a tissue when you cough or sneeze, then throw away the used tissues and wash your hands • Stay at home if you are sick • Sanitize often-used surfaces in your home and office If you do become sick with COVID-19, how then should you care for your pet? The CDC recommends that you restrict contact with pets and other animals just as you would with people. Ask another member of your
household to care for your pets while you are sick. If you must do it yourself, wash your hands before and after you interact and wear a facemask. She was not quite two years old. She grew up hearing stories about how her family made preparations to leave (as of 1936) if the Nazis were victorious. Mireille Taub has a professional diploma in special education and a Master’s Degree in reading.

husband, Robert, works as an Electrical Engineer and volunteers as an EMTCC (Emergency Medical Technician - Critical Care) in their home town. Their son, Michael, is a student at St. Mary’s School in East Islip. Like the rest of us, they are respecting the quarantine by staying home. Also like the rest of us, the Stadelman’s wanted to do something to help. Unlike the rest of us, the Stadelman family actually used their time at home to build a ventilator! During the build, Robert Stadelman taught son Michael a lot about the inner components and machinations of a ventilator; about BVMs (bag valve masks), what a piston is and does, and Michael learned to work
with electronics and circuits. For Robert, this was a proof of concept prototype. “I sure with a little work we could improve this to be a viable emergency ventilator.
