Don’t Forget the Tomatoes I have recently taken to food shopping more frequently, with the intention of picking up “just a few things” during each visit to the grocery store, eliminating the need for a cart and - theoretically - such a large expense in one shot. The cost, well, it depends on the particular outing and what items are on the menu. The cart… let’s just say I have yet to master the art of consolidating my purchases to one of those convenient little hand baskets they provide by the front entrance. Case in point: on my last trip to one of my favorite food stores, I meandered through the aisles selecting a bit of this and that. At about the halfway point, as I was nearing the deli counter, I noticed that my basket was nearly overflowing. The gentleman taking my cold cut order seemed to note the same fact simultaneously,

remarking, Are you gonna carry all that?? I’m going to try, I replied with a smile, while bracing my basket on the edge of the shelving in front of me. My order complete, I continued on my way into the next section of the store, surveying the shelves to determine how many more items I could possibly carry. As I contemplated, I felt a tap on the shoulder. I turned to find a man standing with my cold cuts, those just purchased several steps back, in hand, apparently having fetched them from the floor behind me. Whoops. On to the produce section, where I attempted to juggle tomatoes while picking out cucumbers. And there they went, rolling down the aisle, nearly taking out a young mother and her child. Mom, it’s a little red ball!

the girl squealed, taking off after the tomato. Oh my, I’m so sorry! I hurriedly gathered up the rogue produce and headed to checkout, resigned to the fact that I simply could not carry one more thing. There, I was met with a similarly bewildered look from the cashier, who watched as I piled my merchandise onto the conveyer belt, one item at a time. Do you have bags? she asked. Why yes, yes I do, three in fact. She chuckled, Three bags and no cart? Yes, I replied sheepishly. Yes, I recognize the irony in that. After my total was calculated {not quite as inexpensive as planned}, the cashier said Here’s a tip: even if you think you’re only running in for a gallon of milk, take a cart. Always. Take a cart. One day, I’ll learn.

snacks and baked goods, and contests to win prizes. To prepare for the show, students practiced customer skills and public speaking in the classroom. When asked, students could explain what they are learning to do in their program and how service is beneficial to a consumer. For example, in Retail Store Services, students explained how they learned foundational skills such as handling money, cashiering, customer service, salesmanship skills, and how they used technology - Microsoft Word - to create the flyers to promote the store. Lexus, an Islip UFSD student, shared the benefits of enrolling in the Cosmetology Program. She learned how to do haircuts, manicures, pedicures,

waxing, braiding, shapeups, and edge-ups, and has aspirations of working in a salon and opening up her own store. She was able to market and promote the program using her knowledge of the services and the opportunities she will now be able to avail for herself in the beauty industry. Students in the Welding and Auto programs displayed the equipment and tools they are learning to use. They are earning marketable certificates and getting experience at industry sites. Because of their strength of knowledge, students were well prepared to focus on marketing and promoting their programs and expound on how they will be successful because of the hands-on learning.

Dancing for Wellness The goal of Dancing for Wellness is to benefit senior communities, as well as to promote programs which assist senior citizens. Crimes against the elderly continue to skyrocket each year as criminals find more ways to carry out both new and old scams, including Medicare and phone hoaxes. In fact, seniors lose billions of dollars a year to scams. Senior citizens should be especially aware of fraud schemes targeting their lifestyle and savings and take care to follow a series of tips to protect themselves and their family members. Foundation, a 501c3 nonprofit organization formed with the goal of bringing financial education to the community through workshops, seminars and resource materials. Guided by a board of experts from the Long Island business community, the mission of Equity First Foundation is to educate members of the community so they can make financial decisions with knowledge and confidence. Guests who attended this event enjoyed an evening of ballroom dancing, drinks, and hors d’oeuvres (food and drinks courtesy of Elegant Affairs and PortoFino Restaurant). P.S. I Love You

Students in Peer Support at Bay Shore High School participated in P.S. I Love You Day. The day, which is celebrated nationally, is a day to stand up to bullying and fight depression and

suicide. Peer Support students left uplifting notes on each locker in the school so their classmates would see a positive message when arriving at school

and provided free hugs throughout the day in the cafeterias. Legislator Steve Flotteron stopped by to help the students celebrate.

Friends of Karen is a nonprofit organization that supports critically-ill children and their families. This year, they are celebrating their 40th anniversary; four decades of bringing help, hope and support to over 15,000 children and their families in the tri-state area. In 1978, Friends of Karen began with one family, one child, Karen MacInnes; and one inspired woman, Sheila Petersen, who wanted to sustain her close friends through the devastating illness of their daughter. Today, Friends of Karen serves hundreds of families by providing emotional, financial and advocacy support to children with life-threatening illnesses, and to their families in order to help keep them stable, functioning and able to cope, at no cost. To apply for help, a parent or guardian of the ill child must call the organization and speak to a member of their Family Support Team. Friends of Karen often hosts or participates in many events within their community. On Saturday, May 5th and Sunday, May 6th, they are hosting a team in the Long Island Marathon at Eisenhower Park in East Meadow. Saturday will be a 5K and Sunday will be a 10K. They are looking for people to join their Friends of Karen team and to

cross the finish line knowing they’re making a difference in the lives of many. If you are interested in participating in either or both of these races with colleagues, as a family or individually, you can sign up today! Additionally, if you are interested in volunteering your time preparing for the event - handing out t-shirts, making sure every participant has what he or she needs, etc.; or at the event - taking photos for promotional purposes, you can do so. Learning at the Lighthouse why the lighthouse, which began operation in 1858, was so useful in years past. Finally, the sixth-graders climbed 181 steps to the top of the lighthouse; on several clearer days, the students were able to see the Manhattan skyline. “Some of our students have never experienced the climb, and were thrilled with themselves when they did reach the top,” said teacher Laura Rondinella. “Integrating the Fire Island Lighthouse into our Earning recognition in science core curriculum was one of those lessons March for her dedication that the children really to learning, senior Jordan enjoyed as an experience Piacenti was named East with a real live outdoor classroom. Mock Trial Volunteers

Members of the East Islip High School Mock Trial team worked as volunteers at the American Mock Trial Association Opening Round Championship Series tournament in March. The East Islip students were invited to this college mock trial tournament, held at the Cohalan Court Complex in Central Islip, by the event’s coordinator, Harry Tilis, the president of the Suffolk County Lawyers Association. Known as the Purple Team because of their

distinctive purple uniform shirts, East Islip’s students were responsible for guiding judges and competitors through the courthouse, gathering and delivering important paperwork, and helping Tilis keep the tournament running smoothly. The ORCS tournament was one of several being held around the country. College mock trial teams from some of the top colleges and universities in the nation, including Harvard, Princeton, Yale and Tufts, competed at the

ORCS for a chance to move on to the National College Mock Championship. “What a great group of thoughtful and helpful young people,” said Tilis, praising the East Islip volunteers. “Their generous spirit and respectful and cheerful outlook made this weekend a breeze.” Senior Angela Loizides was especially excited to attend, as her sister Elizabeth, an alumna of East Islip’s Class of 2015 and former East Islip Mock Trial member, was competing for Wellesley College at the tournament. “I learned so much from watching the college teams,” said sophomore Tyler O’Neil. “It was a great experience.” Patsy Lester, East Islip’s coach, also participated at the tournament, serving as scoring judge. “I’m grateful to Mr. Tilis for offering my students this opportunity, and so proud of them for giving up their weekend to help others,” said Lester.
