Brisk winds and salt spray can enhance the experience of living by the seaside. But the same features of coastal living that attract residents can be unkind to many garden plants. Sun, salt, a light breeze and some sand may make for a picturesque day at the beach, but they can be anything but favorable to the delicate plants and flowers in a garden. Further, the very warm temperatures and arid, sandy soil that are typical of seaside locales can make planting a lush garden difficult. Despite the difficulties, coastal living and gardening is possible if you implement some tips for creating a more welcoming environment for plants. Here’s how to do just that. • Set up a windbreak. Whether it’s by using native grasses and durable plants that are typically found in coastal areas or an architectural structure, such as a stone wall or
fencing, a good windblock will help shelter other plants from blowing sand and salt. Just be sure to plan the windblock to stop most of the oncoming wind in a way that your water views are not compromised. • Amend the soil. Few things grow well in sandy soil on their own. Unless you’re thinking of solely planting cacti and other succulent plants that don’t require much water from the soil, it will be necessary to amend the soil to include nutrients and a more hospitable growing base. Sand is good for drainage, but it cannot retain enough moisture to be viable for most plants. Therefore a healthy mix of nutrient-rich soil, compost and fertilizer can provide the right start. • Consider sun and heat exposure. Select plants that are hardy in warm-weather, full-sun conditions. Droughttolerant plants are a good idea. Choose among varieties that have waxy
leaves to repel salt and sand and low-growing types that will have more protection from the sun. Should you want to plant other flowers and plants, you may have to consider creating shade with moderately-sized bushes or trees. Yucca plants thrive seaside, as does ornamental pampas grass. Brightly colored ice plants and cosmos flowers can add splashes of color. • Add costal accessories. Typically seaside gardens are enhanced with knicknacks and other items that are specific to coastal living. Pilings with rope, small anchors, sea shells, nautical accents, and much more can be used to fill in bare areas of the garden and create places for birds and other animals to explore. While there can be some challenges to seaside gardening, it is possible to plant a seaside garden if gardeners choose wisely among heat-, sand- and drought-tolerant plants.

Turning Points By: Jamie Lynn Ryan Discovering The Passion To Do What You Love… That was the topic I chose to speak on at the recent C.W. Post Honors Program Conference. The good news? Every last student in attendance at the standing room only panel had something they were passionate about and, in an ideal world, wished to pursue as a career. The bad news? Most they seemed all too content to relegate these passions to a mere hobby, rather than even giving the dreams a fleeting chance to exist in their own, real world. Musicians majoring in Chemistry, Artists majoring in Finance… This is not to say that all fields don’t hold some sort of fulfilling promise – but
just choosing a major for the sake of picking something, anything… well, I can’t say I support that philosophy wholeheartedly. And as for the money factor; well that only goes so far in dictating happiness. Say what you will about being able to purchase all the comforts and extravagances you like, but if you spend the majority of your life just going through the motions of a 9-5 job, I think it’s safe to assume no amount of compensation will make up for it. I’m not sure I made much of an impression on these students, as many are already well on their way to graduation and seem fairly set to continue on their chosen path. Others were a bit more open-minded, willing to put themselves out there and
explore – at least in the short term – for even the slightest chance at success in something they truly enjoyed. And still others remained undecided, juggling several interests while in the process of making that all-important decision of which direction to head in. I suppose the most important point I tried to make, and the one I attempt to follow myself, is that, no matter what decisions you make along the way, there is always room to change course, start fresh, adapt on the go… nothing is set in stone unless you allow it to be. As we grow and mature, so do our dreams, and what once may have seemed impossible could very well become a genuine possibility down the road.

Making Memories On The Job
As the school year comes to a close, many of Long Island’s high school students are looking forward to a funfilled summer. For some, however, now begins the monotonous task of finding a summer job. Even though the school year is over, teens often find themselves hunting for employment for several reasons. For some, extra income is a driving factor. For others, they just want to make their parents proud. Five summers ago, when I applied for my first job, it was out of sheer boredom! I really didn’t need the money. Making my parents proud was a
nice bonus. Several years later, I still work there. In fact, now my brother works there too. As I am heading off to college, I’m not interested in working many hours. I would much rather spend time with family than pick up a shift. There will be plenty of time to work, but only a few months to spend living at home. Sometimes, work is overwhelming; it is rarely fun. Nonetheless, it is a responsibility that I have undertaken. Working teaches invaluable life lessons that will prepare me for what is to come. In addition, my job has
afforded me the ability to socialize in a new environment. I have made new friends, and the bond between my brother and I has been strengthened. Without a doubt, working has been the most beneficial aspect of my young life. I have never felt more accepted within a group in my entire life. Even though some of my coworkers are old enough to be my parents, we act like a normal bunch of high school friends. As we close out this school year, I am looking forward to a memorable summer. Hopefully, you are too!

Ecoscaping is a growing trend among homeowners who want to take care of their lawns and landscapes but want to do so in a way that’s environmentally friendly. Integrating both landscape architecture and spatial planning with environmental science, ecoscaping is meant to help homeowners create a sustainable and ecofriendly landscape design. It’s natural to assume that ecoscaping includes looking for ways to reduce reliance on chemical pesticides, but there are many additional ways homeowners can embrace ecoscaping. This includes removing or refusing to plant invasive plants that are difficult to control because they are from different ecosystems and can threaten local wildlife and existing plants. Instead of choosing exotic plants that aren’t native to the area, choose native plants that are accustomed to the local climate. Another way to embrace ecoscaping is to develop a planting strategy wherein plants are planted in beneficial growing conditions that can eliminate theneed for chemical fertilizers and excessive watering.

The Suffolk County Organization for the Promotion of Education has named two representatives from the Islip School District as recipients of the 2014 SCOPE Awards of Educational Excellence. These two members of the Islip school community were among a group of educators, support staff and volunteers from throughout Suffolk County who were honored at the SCOPE Educational Excellence Awards ceremony at Villa Lombardi’s in Holbrook on March 26th. Islip resident, parent and retired Board of Education member Laura Paehr was recognized for
her community service. “The Islip community is privileged to have a star such as Laura Paehr,” said Superintendent of Schools Susan A. Schnebel. “Her commitment to the students, staff and parents, and her sense of volunteerism are unquestionable. As a PTA leader, both locally and regionally, former Board of Education trustee and friend to all, Mrs. Paehr continues to place her community in the highest regard, and the feeling is mutual.” James Prudente, network systems administrator for the Islip School District, was honored for outstanding
Islip High School student Joseph Salerno, a member of Troop 292 of Brentwood, was officially recognized as an Eagle Scout, the highest level
in the Boy Scouting program for the Boy Scouts of America on March 9th. In addition to achieving merit badges and demonstrating leadership and service, in order to receive Eagle Scout ranking, a Scout must participate in an Eagle Scout service project. This project helps further demonstrate leadership skills, while also benefiting the community. Joseph’s project consisted of repairing and installing bird boxes for wood ducks and owls at the Seatuck
Environmental Center in Islip. The bird boxes will provide safe habitats and will hopefully promote the nesting habits and attract more ducks to the area. During the creation of his project, Joseph led troop members and family, totaling 120 hours, on the repairs and installations in the woods, pond and marshlands of the center. He raised $565 and received several donations of materials. He was able to donate $450 back to the Seatuck Environmental Center for use with future projects.

More than two dozen outstanding band, chorus and orchestra musicians from East Islip Middle School participated in the Suffolk County Music Educators Association All-County Division I Central (for sixthgraders) and All-County Division II West (for seventhand eighth-graders) concerts on March 9th. The SCMEA ensembles, including students from more than 30 other Suffolk middle schools, were directed by acclaimed guest conductors from some of Long Island’s best music programs. East Islip musicians in Division I included Fiona Ashe, Sophia Bates, Kayla Cappe, Giavanna Dushaj, Gracie Edmonds, Gia Geamaux, Peter Gerace, Liam Greene, Kaylee Hoffman, Thomas Locke, Caroline Meehan, Matthew Micalizzi, Justine Rizzo and Toby Zollner. Division II musicians included Jake Acocella, Connor Barnes, Alexandra Bertolini, Sarah Bloom, Anthony Ciadella, John Clyne, James Daley, John Donovan, Lauren Florenz, Victoria Keenan, Madison Lane, Stephanie Millito, Elisa Mingo and Cassidy Triolo. Ben has been on the St. Anthony’s High School rugby team during his 10th, 11th, and 12th grade as well as the high school rowing team. Upon graduation, Ben will be a college student, studying wildlife science and management. Community service has been important to Ben as he has logged 60.7 hours of community service, including being a Fire Island National Seashore National Park Volunteer and working on many Eagle Service Projects within Troop 205. Ben has also played CYO Basketball, trained in mixed martial arts, been a field maintenance worker at Heckscher State Park in the summers, and been playing guitar for the past six years. Ben is the son of Meg and John Hallowell of Great River brother to Mary, a senior at Harvard University and Emma, a sophomore at Cornell University. On March 20th, Alzheimer’s Disease Resource Center, Inc. (ADRC) took part in West Marine’s Cruising For A Cause Charity Night, which coincided with the grand opening of West Marine’s new flagship store in West Islip. The event highlighted local boating and marine environmental non-profit organizations, and offered the opportunity for them to raise funds for their
programs. This year, West Marine helped ADRC raise money for its upcoming Regatta and Awards Dinner, which will take place on June 14th at the Sagamore Yacht Club in Oyster Bay. More than $500 was raised for the Regatta. Throughout the night, those in attendance enjoyed hors d’oeuvres, beverages, music by the Below Average White Band and a live auction that featured a Blue Island Oyster Farm
visit, and Jimmy Styx stand up paddle boards. Wicked Tuna star Captain Ralph Wilkins was on hand to greet guests, take pictures, and help with several raffle drawings and the live auction. Benjamin Spencer Hallowell successfully completed his Eagle Board of Review in October, 2013, officially making him the 48th Eagle Scout of Troop 205 of Great River. Ben’s Eagle Court of Honor will be held on Tuesday, May 6th, starting at 7:30 p.m. at Timber Point Elementary School, 200 Timberpoint Road in East Islip. Ben Hallowell is a member of Troop 205, sponsored by the Great River Fire Department, under the direction of Scoutmaster Mark Businski. On his “road to Eagle,” Ben has served the troop as Assistant Senior Patrol Leader, Patrol Leader, Assistant Patrol Leader, Quartermaster, and Den Chief for the Cub Scouts in Pack 205. Ben is also a member of the Order of the Arrow, the Boy Scout Honorary Camping Society. Ben has also earned the following BSA Awards: Snorkeling BSA and Scuba BSA. Ben has had many unique Scouting experiences, including being a member of the contingent to the
National Boy Scout Sea Base – Scuba Live Aboard Adventure in 2013, 10 days of Mountain hiking at Philmont Scout Ranch in Cimarron, New Mexico in 2012, the Troop 205 Adirondack Canoe Trek in 2010, and numerous other Troop 205 campouts. Ben has also attended summer camp at Camp Wakpominee in Fort Ann, NY for five summer seasons. To become an Eagle Scout, the Scout must earn 21 merit badges, of which 12 are specifically Eagle required, progress through six rank advancements – from Tenderfoot, Second Class, First Class, Star, Life, then Eagle, and also plan, develop, and implement a major service project for the community. The Service Project that Ben conducted with the assistance of his fellow Troop members, friends and family members, was the design and development of a boardwalk on the Greenbelt Trail in Heckscher State Park. As Ben reflects on his Scouting experience, he recently said, “The Boy Scouts and my upbringing have given me a love for the outdoors and a duty to protect it. I plan to study wildlife science and resources management in college. I also want to live in an environment where I can continue the activities I have done in the Boy

This year’s winners, one for each grade, were kindergartner Sophia Chillemi, first-grader Michael Stadelman, second-grader Jake Vassalico, third-grader Daniella Chillemi, fourthgrader Brianna Zinkiewicz and fifth-grader David Dreyer. Runners-up included kindergartner Kiera Zeledon; firstgraders Kelly Nelson and Vanessa Rossa; secondgraders Alessandro Jarvis and Brendan Munno; third-graders Carlie
Edmonds, Angelina Sekela and Anthony Sekela; fourth-graders Michael Baldino and Johnathan Yankus; and fifth-graders John Rizzo and Jonathan Stanzione. The five winners will be continuing on to Brookhaven National Laboratory’s Elementary School Science Fair on May 3rd, competing against more than 500 students from more than 100 Suffolk County schools. Close to 100 students extended their knowledge of science topics by participating in Connetquot Elementary School’s annual Science Fair on March 11th. “The many outstanding projects demonstrated the hard work and commitment that the students displayed in conducting and presenting their experiments,” said Principal Deborah Smith. Friends and families viewed the various projects while attending the fair, which was organized by adviser David Lake. Teacher Vivian Reilly also assisted in facilitating the judging. 100 YEARS YOUNG - Suffolk County Legislator Tom Barraga recently had the pleasure of attending a celebration for Tess Luskin Robinson at the Atria in Bay Shore. Surrounded by family and friends Legislator Barraga presented Tess a proclamation congratulating her on her 100th birthday. Tess was born in New York City on March 24th, 1914. For over 76 years she was happily married to her late husband Robert Robinson. Tess devoted her life to her husband and three children. She has nine grandchildren and four great grandchildren.

The East Islip varsity softball team began the spring season with several impressive wins, beating Comsewogue on March 24th (12-2) and Kings Park on March 27th (19-7). After losing 5-1 to Eastport-South Manor on March 28th, they defeated Huntington on April 1st by the score of 3-2. Eighthgrader Cierra Colon picked up her first varsity win,
throwing three innings of scoreless relief. Down 2-0 in the bottom of the fifth, eighth-grader Jessica Selle hit a solo home run into the tennis courts (her second of the year) to make the game 2-1. After a Heather Zenk single, Megan Munn hit a triple to tie it. In the bottom of the seventh, tied 2-2, Selle led off the inning with a double, Zenk bunted

Throughout the month of March, the English department at East Islip High School, students and their families collected donations for care packages for U.S. Marines serving in Afghanistan, an annual project organized by teacher Dori Hirsch. Students helped Hirsch load up the donations to bring them over to Rena Costello, a home and career skills teacher at East Islip Middle School who facilitates the districtwide program of donations for overseas troops.
“I would sincerely like to thank you for collecting items and sending out care packages to me and my Marines,” wrote 2nd Lt. Patrick J. Burns, an engineer operations officer in Combat Logistics Battalion 7 stationed in Afghanistan. “Everything you sent is extremely appreciated and really helps keep the morale high through these difficult and demanding days. The fact that so many Americans are still sending out packages after all these years truly reinforces how strong a
nation we really are.” Costello also arranged a March 24th visit to the high school from U.S. Marine Corps Staff Sgt. John Jones, a double amputee who was injured in January 2005. As they read the classic John Knowles novel A Separate Peace, set in 1942-43, sophomores in Greg Kguloian’s English class have labored hard to gather factual information about the World War II era. Taking initiative, students performed self-directed “web-quests,” searching for interesting facts, people and events from the same time period. Acting as museum curators, they then created PowerPoint and museum presentations
to share their factual findings with the class. The next step, according to Kguloian, is to follow these discoveries with a carefully crafted crosscurricular ELA-social studies lesson, inspired by the National Institute of Trial Attorneys unit, in which the students will put Gene Forrester, a character from the novel, on trial. “I have been a teacher at East Islip for nearly 20 years and I am still learning every day,” said Kguloian.
“We all work together and learn and accomplish so much more than we could alone. The students deserve to learn as much and do as much as they can, and they discover that they can enjoy learning more and doing more with what they learn. Three young scientists from East Islip High School – Laura Coffin, Derek Dattero and Jake MacMorris – participated in the annual Protein Modeling Challenge at Stony Brook University on February 28th. In their first time competing, East Islip’s team scored eighth out of 28 schools, scoring above average in all categories. Prior to the contest, the entire science research
class – also including Christopher Cangelosi, Nick Carney, Gabbie Marino, Joe Nickel and Hetal Patel – researched and built a model of the Ras 5p21 protein, which plays a role in cell growth and division. The model was judged by a team of protein scientists at the university. On the day of the competition, hosted by Stony Brook’s Center for Science and

Take Heart With Tea An apple a day may keep the doctor away, but a recent study found drinking tea might keep the cardiologist at bay.
The USDA reported that men and women who drank black tea for three weeks reduced their total and bad
cholesterol (LDL) levels by an average of 7.5 percent. Researchers concluded that drinking tea may reduce the
risk of coronary heart disease. Antioxidants called flavonoids, found in both green and black teas, are thought to
be potent weapons in the fight against heart disease. That news may be especially important
for women, given that heart disease kills more women than all forms of cancer combined including breast cancer.

Setting Up A Backyard Play Set Outdoor play is a highlight of childhood. Being able to run, jump and swing outside is an excellent form of exercise and a way for kids to interact with their friends. One staple of youthful play is spending time on a play set in the backyard. Parents without a play set in the backyard need only look into a neighboring yard with a play set to witness these prime congregation spots for the neighborhood children. And play sets don’t just benefit kids. Parents who want to keep tabs on their children can do so much more easily with a backyard play set, and knowing they
are having fun close by alleviates worries. The decision to purchase a play set is one pondered by parents all across the country. There are scores of ready-made varieties available or sets that can be custom designed. The choice of which one to buy should be based on a number of factors, both in desired features and also models that offer safety. Materials The first decision parents face is which material to use for the play set. The main materials used to build play sets are plastic, metal and wood. Plastic sets tend to be very basic and may be reserved
for young children’s sets. While they can go outside, they may not last more than a few years and are often best relegated to indoor toys. Metal sets are some of the most durable and strong. They are frequently seen at parks and playgrounds. Metal play sets are often cemented down to a foundation for stability, which doesn’t make them ideal for a temporary set that will be removed when the kids outgrow it. Also, you cannot generally add onto a metal set. Wooden sets are usually a compromise between the two. They’re good for backyards because they
can be taken down when they’re no longer used. They can also be made more useful with addon attachments, such as extra slides, rock walls and different swing variations. Safety Play sets are designed for children, so all of them should be safe, right? Not exactly. Some manufacturers cut corners or create somewhat questionable designs. Look for recessed hardware and bolts so that clothing doesn’t snag on pieces that stick out. Choose play sets that have handles for extra stability while children are climbing. Avoid ones
with metal hardware that can rust and weaken over time. Wood-to-wood attachments won’t rust and will be more durable. When choosing wood sets, be sure to select hardwoods that will not soften and warp. In addition, choose designs that feature rounded edges so there will be less chance for splinters or injuries from hitting blunt edges. Be sure to have plasticcovered chains on swings and other moveable parts so that fingers cannot get inside of the links and be pinched. Check to make sure treated and stained wood does not contain harmful
material, like arsenic, that can leach out of the wood into the surrounding soil. Some parents also may want to look for a wooden play set that is made from materials harvested following sustainable forestry guidelines. This gives parents some peace of mind knowing their child’s play set is eco-friendly. Play sets can be fun additions to the backyard. They come in many different sizes and configurations, so it’s possible to find one that will fit in any backyard.
