SCOUTS ATTEND SCOUT SUNDAY SERVICE - On Sunday, March 3, 2021, Scouts from BSA Troops 43-B & 43-G charted by AMVETS Post 76 of Bay Shore along with Webelos from Pack 153 Charted by St Peters by the Sea attended a Scout Sunday Service at St Peters in Bay Shore. The scouts would like to thank Bishop Itty, the Vestry of St Peters by the Sea and the entire congregation for hosting this service and the warm welcome. Scouts assisted with the readings and we were provided an opportunity to publicly recognise one of our senior scouts who earned the rank of Eagle Scout in December after completing his service project during the pandemic. We will hold a formal Eagle Court of Awards hopefully later in the year, but wanted to take a moment to recognize the scout for earning this impressive rank and also he has accepted the role of Junior Assistant Scoutmaster, where he will use his skills and training to assist his fellow scouts.

The BSFCC began its food pantry ministry with a “Love Lunch” Grab for Pre-K through 5th grade children and is now expanding to serve the increased demand for food from local families. Reverend Colangelo says, “Food insecurity is a persistent problem that threatens the well-being of many Bay Shore children, youth and families. We share a common vision to address this issue. The bottom line is that you are helping us help many people who are hungry. It’s practical, grass-roots compassion in action.” BSLC President Fran Beringer agreed, saying, “Bay Shore Lions are 78 local people – your neighbors and friends – who are committed to community service. This is our 90th Anniversary year and for the past seven years, we’ve supported five local food pantries each with a $2,000 contribution annually. We recognize the additional hardship
that has come with the COVID-19 pandemic and are pleased to extend our outreach and welcome the BSFCC to our fold.” According to Mike Krieger, President BSCTA, “We strive to provide Bay Shore and Brightwaters students with highquality education, and opportunities to get involved in community service. We’re so proud of the way our students and teachers have stepped up and for their enthusiastic response to the call for food and funds for this new food pantry.” In addition to presentations from each of these organizations, local Suffolk County and Islip Town officials participated. Suffolk County Legislator Steve Flotteron and Islip Town Councilman John Cochrane presented a Citation and Proclamation respectively, praising the collaborative effort to address Bay Shore’s local food insecurity issue. The First Congregational Church of Bay Shore (BSFCC), the Bay Shore Lions Club (BSLC) and the Bay Shore Classroom Teachers’ Association (BSCTA) celebrated a successful collaboration in support of the community’s newest food pantry Saturday, March 20th. Participants gathered in BSFCC’s sanctuary, Bay Shore’s oldest Church which was first organized in 1853 and now located at 1680 Union Boulevard. Fran Beringer, President of BSLC and Mike Krieger, President of the BSCTA presented checks totaling $2,250 to BSFCC’s Reverend Anthony Vito Colangelo and Lety Anez, BSFCC’s Community Outreach Director. In addition, four full carloads of food donations were collected from seven schools represented by BSCTA. To date, close to $4,000 has been raised locally to fund the BSFCC, including generous donations from the Jacob Marley Foundation

The pandemic took its toll on CFK, as it did on many, but they stayed afloat and are thankful for the opportunity to continue to make a difference. Since 2005, CFK has given out more than 3 MILLION DOLLARS to help local Long Islanders. Here are some of the areas they’ve helped others financially: Rent, Mortgage Payments, Oil Deliveries, Utility Bills, Food, Transportation To & From Hospitals, Co-Payments, Medications & Funeral Expenses. Donations are so important to CFK, especially being that they receive no grant money. They would like to thank all thsoe who attended their Scavenger Hunt fundraising event on April 10th. Their next fundraising event will be a golf outing on June 14th, stay tuned for more information! Contractors For Kids (CFK) is a non-profit organization, which was founded for the purpose of providing assistance to families in Long Island communities. Their goal is to assist children and their families overcome obstacles that have unfortunately changed or have impacted their lives through the sickness, injury or death of a child. They are committed to this cause and want to give hope and reassurance for the futures of Long Islanders. CFK was founded in 2005 by Kevin Harney and Alan Nahmias of Stalco Construction. Kevin and Alan, both long-time philanthropists, saw the growing need for financial assistance in our communities and knew that something more needed to be done. Through random acts of kindness, they were slowly changing the lives of others, however they thirsted to make more change so they decided to form this non-profit, Contractors For Kids. The Board of Directors, members, supporters and volunteers of CFK are all “Contractors For Kids.” They are all helping others and building futures for children and their families in need. Their organization runs on donations only and is volunteer based, they have no employees. One family at a time, they make sure that the financial hardship brought on by sickness, injury or death does not destroy an already hurting family. Whether it is to pay a phone bill or a mortgage payment, they want to be there to help. So how do you qualify to get help? It’s quite simple. If you can prove that you are struggling financially because of the sickness, injury or death of a child, you live on Long Island (in Nassau or Suffolk County), and you have filled out their Application For Assistance, they will get in touch with you to see how they can be of help! This would not be possible without our fantastic partners at the Suffolk County Department of Labor, Brentwood Public Library, as well as our staff in our Career Education office.” With BHS research students Juan Delgado and Joshua Castellanos as the two voices behind the scenes, episode one features Suffolk County Labor Commissioner Rosaie Drago who discusses the nuances of her life, important insight she’s acquired over the years and the possibility of an autobiography. During
episode 2, Juan and Josh interview the Smithtown High School InvenTeam, recipients of the nationally recognized LemelsonMIT Program Awards, about their aspirations to positively impact the world. The 35-minute episode, Suffolk County Labor Commissioner Rosalie Drago, and 60-minute episode, Smithtown High School InveTeam, can both be accessed on Anchor by Spotify. The district’s “Let’s Science That!” program, initiated as a result of the COVID-19 pandemic, served as a catalyst for the podcast series. The program, spearheaded by BHS science research teacher, Dr. Rebcca Grella, showcases student STEM research and the work of regional, national and international scientists.

Helen Keller Services (HKS), a 501 (C)(3) nonprofit offering programs and services through its two divisions: Helen Keller National Center for Deaf-Blind Youths and Adults (HKNC) and Helen Keller Services for the Blind (HKSB), today announced it will host its Second Annual Helen’s 5K Run. Walk. Ride. Virtual Fundraiser online from April 24 to May 9, 2021. Participants can register to run/walk/ride, and/or assist with fundraising by creating their own personal Individual or Team Helen’s Run.Walk. Ride. Fundraising page at https://events.elitefeats. com/hks21. “While we cannot be together in person this year, we invite you to join us virtually to be a part of this year’s fundraising campaign,” said Sue Ruzenski, CEO
of HKS. “Whether it is indoors or outside in the fresh air while running, walking or riding the 5K, there are many ways to participate, support and stay connected.” Last year was the first year HKS could not have an in-person event in over 30 years. Nonetheless, the event was a big success, which included participants from Maine to Hawaii. This year the event seeks to raise $30,000 and to reach an even broader audience. Proceeds from this year’s fundraising campaign will enable HKS to assist individuals who are blind, visually impaired or have a combined hearing and vision loss to receive equal access to opportunity. The 5k Run. Walk. Ride. seeks to Break Down Barriers to Independence, Build a More Inclusive
Society and Bring Inner Capability Out. Participants register online and then record their runs with a timer or smartphone app such as Strava. After the run, participants update their time on the website for credit. In addition to raising funds for HKS, participants can compete to win a variety of prizes, including TD Bank and Nike gift cards in amounts ranging from $500 to $100. Full details are online. Brentwood Students Achieve Finalist Standing in National Competition

The Brentwood Union Free School District (BUFSD) announced that Brentwood High School (BHS) has been selected as one of only five high schools in the nation to achieve finalist standing in the 2021 SourceAmerica Design Challenge. The national engineering competition showcases students’ exposition in STEM to develop assistive technologies for individuals with disabilities in their work environment. “It brings the district great pride to celebrate the hard work and success of The Quick Stamper team. The dedication these individuals have demonstrated is beyond imagination,” said Mr. Richard Loeschner, Superintendent of BUFSD. “Our students’ recognition as national finalists in the SourceAmerica Design Challenge is a testament to their capabilities and the determination of the district’s Science Research and Technology Department. We look forward to supporting The Quick Stamper team throughout the remainder of the competition.” BHS’s student team, The Quick Stamper, brings together the knowledge and expertise of four high school students: Javier Garcia, senior; Katie Torres, senior; Nicole Olekanma, junior; and Cecia Martinez, fully
remote junior. Under the guidance of BHS technology teacher Mr. Jake Mulderig, the team created a label-placing device called The Quick Stamper which incorporates an easyto-follow, four-step process that increases the accuracy of placing labels onto the center of boxes using a stamping method. After several months of fine-tuning and documenting their project’s iterations, the team’s volunteer device tester, a student with disabilities, experienced an increase in accuracy and decrease in frustration when placing labels using this device. As finalists, The Quick Stamper will prepare an online presentation of their project and will be expected to answer specific questions pertaining to their work. Judges will be responsible for evaluating the content of technical papers and videos. Projects will not be assessed on their level of sophistication but rather their potential impact in a professional working environment. The 2021 Design Challenge Finals Event, a 90-minute virtual awards show, will be hosted by actor and disability activist RJ Mitte on Wednesday, April 7, 2021. The event will feature project presentations from the finalist teams, judges’ remarks, awards, and a special announcement about the future of Design Challenge.
