40th Anniversary

Hofstra University’s PEIR program is celebrating its 40th anniversary this year, says Bradley Kaye, Associate Director of Lifelong Learning. PEIR stands for Personal Enrichment in Retirement. Kaye says PEIR, which meets year-round usually four days a week, provides opportunities for intellectual stimulation, cultural enrichment and personal growth for retirees or semi-retired individuals aged 55 or older. PEIR, he adds, is one of the many lifelong learning programs in universities across the country. The Hofstra program is different from many of them in that the students develop and present the courses. Classes cover subjects such as current events, literacture, history,

religion, philosophy, natural sciences, politics, performing arts, visual arts and architecture, economics, finance and technology. “There is an important social element to PEIR,” Kaye says. “For instance, every May there is a dinner-dance and every November a luncheon. In addition, there are guided trips throughout the year to such places as arboretums, museums, the United Nations, and the 9/11 Memorial. He also cites the importance of lunch where many PEIR members discuss a myriad of issues and often cement friendships among each other. “PEIR is a mix of vibrant, intelligent men and women who see retirement as a time to explore new interests in

a friendly and welcoming atmosphere,” Kaye says, “and being on the Hofstra campus they have access to the university’s many resources, such as worldclass libraries, debates and student productions.” The program attracts many people from Nassau County, Suffolk County and Eastern Queens, who often remain with PEIR for many years. “About 10 of our members,” he adds, “are in their 90s and continue to present programs to the nearly 200 members.” When asked what PEIR means to him, one member said, “Learn, learn, learn. Irish Blessings Islip Middle School’s student government paid a memorable, festive visit to residents of the Atria Bay Shore assisted living community on St. Patrick’s Day. With the luck of the Irish upon them, students, faculty and the Atria’s seniors participated in Irish-themed games and a sing-along, guided by advisers Kaitlin Rooney and Christine Sheridan.

Seventh-graders Emily Aguilar, Stephanie Castro, Selina Chan, Keera Kittles and Emma Neri, and sixthgraders Olivia Piazzolla and Nicholas Wilbur, performed various Irish tunes under the direction of orchestra teacher Laura Shaiman. Following the performance, student government members partnered with seniors and recited Irish blessings.

MONEY MANAGEMENT - Students in Mr. Carney’s Money 101 class at Bay Shore High School are learning how to manage their money. Recently they had a visit from representatives from Peoples United bank to provide information about smart money management.

TALK LIKE AN EGYPTIAN - Students on Team 62 at Bay Shore Middle School are experts on Ancient Egyptian culture. They recently took on the role of Egyptologists and researched different aspects of the culture. Students then presented the information they had learned to their teachers and classmates.

EVIDENCE OF CHANGE - Students on Team 61 at Bay Shore Middle School recently learned how to use evidence to make scientific arguments. They conducted experiments and used the evidence they gathered to debate whether a candle burning causes a chemical or physical change.

FIFTH AVENUE CELEBRATES - On Friday, March 3rd, Fifth Avenue School held an assembly to celebrate Black History Month. Students performed songs and dances for their classmates and families. Teachers put on a play for the students, which took them on a tour of a Black History Museum and highlighted the contributions that have been made throughout history. Historical figures, such as Harriet Tubman, were brought to life in the Fifth Avenue auditorium.

BINGO - Lots of families joined Mrs. Schomburg and the Brook Avenue School PFA for a night of bingo and a pizza dinner. Everyone played to win and had a fun night with friends and family! Thank you to the Brook Avenue faculty and administration for the donations to support the PFA fundraiser! Founder of Bottles for the Brave, Pamela Burner, and retired US Navy and Vietnam Veteran Larry Spencer, visited the Eastern Suffolk BOCES Islip Career Center’s Supermarket and Warehouse Program to collect several hundred redeemable water bottles collected by the students for the Bottles for the Brave organization. Teacher Ken Abel said, “We have a recycling program in the building. Each year we contact Bottles for the Brave after we collect hundreds of redeemable water bottles.

It’s a way for us to help clean up the earth and give back to those who are keeping us safe, our deployed troops, and our local veterans who have fought for our freedom.” The money from the bottle deposits helps pay for mailing the packages, Burner shared. Wrestling Mural histiocytosis. The blood drive is scheduled for Wednesday, May 31st at the East Islip Fire Department, located at 30 East Main Street in East Islip.

Michael Dondero and Cynthis Stasio, two of teacher Daniel Figliozzi’s senior art students at East Islip High School, volunteered to create a large-scale mural for the school’s wrestling team. The mural, located on the wrestling room doors, was a

vision proposed by Athletic Director Stephen Restivo. The students brought the work to fruition using enamel paint. “Even though I don’t do sports, it was nice to contribute to one of the other departments at our school,” said Dondero.

“I enjoyed doing the mural and contributing to not only the art department, but the school itself and the athletic department,” said Stasio. Both Dondero and Stasio plan to attend art school this fall.

At the 25th annual science fair at Islip’s Commack Road Elementary School, held on March 9th, smiling students demonstrated their love of science and knowledge of the scientific method while showing an interest in a variety of topics including agriculture, physics and

hygiene. Skittles were dissolved, toothbrushes were used on eggshells, mnemonic devices were tested, contraptions were assembled – all in the name of science. A winner was selected for each grade level, based on evaluations by CRES teachers. Second-grade winner Madison Giardella

researched how the growth of organic green bean seeds was affected by different types of light sources. Third-grade winner Louis Tuorto created a gyrobot which used different energy sources to move on its own. Lucas Schneider, the fourth-grade winner, focused his efforts on identifying how different additives affect the taste of water. Prompting visitors to stand on one leg to find out the results, Dakota Dieumegard’s “Does Vision Affect Balance?” was the winning project for the fifth grade. COLONIAL LIFE - To mark the end of their Colonial Life/Revolution in New York study, Mrs. D’Antoni’s class at Gardiner Manor School practiced and performed three colonial plays for other classes, the school principals and their parents. Young Scientists

Fourth-grade scientists at East Islip’s John F. Kennedy Elementary School recently explored animal kingdoms, the food chain and food webs, culminating in the dissection of owl pellets. In their studies, they realized that much can

be learned about a barn owl’s diet by analyzing the types of bones in the pellet the owl regurgitates after swallowing its prey whole. The students dissected the owl pellets together and used reference materials to identify the prey animals by their bones. Dozens of tiny

bones were compared to those on a poster of animal skeletons to reveal the types of prey consumed. The hands-on experiment led to a true understanding of how the food web really works.

Fourteen Suffolk County Community College Culinary Arts student-competitors were challenged with a two-and-a-half hour time limit to whip up a winning cupcake at what has become an annual competition at the Suffolk County Community College Culinary Arts Center: Cupcake Wars.

Jacqueline Segovia of Brentwood, center, took first place and was awarded a $750 scholarship and assorted baking supplies. Jacqueline created a mango cupcake with a mango cilantro salsa and an avocado icing. At left, second place and $500 went to Yvette Boucher-Denning of Mastic Beach for her

On March 3rd-4th, staff members engage with one another in both “family groups” and large groups to explore important social topics. The weekend, which is completely confidential, also provides students the opportunity to open up and

work through any challenges they might be facing in their own lives. The goal is to strengthen the bonds that exist at the High School and make it an even more inclusive and embracing environment for all. Over the course of the weekend, students heard from

two Bay Shore graduates who are working in the music industry. Ryan Cassata and Tre Trax both came back to the school to share their experiences at Bay Shore High School, their musical journey and advice on following your heart and passion.
