Suffolk County Executive Steve Bellone released the following statement in response to the FDA releasing the agency’s proposed regulations restricting e-cigarette sales. “New enforcement actions are needed immediately to curb the vaping epidemic that has taken our youth by storm. While we have taken swift action in Suffolk to crack down on the illegal sale of e-cigarettes to minors by increasing penalties and continue to implement new educational programs, the time has come for the FDA to step in and regulate these sweet, fruit flavored e-cigarettes that are targeting our young ones and causing serious damage to their health.”

Deanna of Islip says her family's Artichoke Pie is typically served as a side (vegetable) dish, but is delicious heated up the next day for lunch, too! "My mom, Connie, would make this Artichoke Pie recipe as one of the many dishes at holiday gatherings in her home," says Deanna. "Mom passed away last year, just before Easter, at the age of 99. Her recipes will always be a part of our family celebrations as we honor her memory." What You Will Need 1 14oz can Artichoke hearts (packed in water) ½ lb. mozzarella cut into 1 inch chunks 2 eggs beaten ¼ tsp salt ¼ tsp pepper ¼ tsp garlic powder or 1 clove finely
chopped & sautéed in oil ¼ cup of Parmesan cheese 2 tbs. milk 2 homemade or frozen 9 inch pie crusts Preparation Preheat oven to 350 degrees. Combine diced artichoke hearts, mozzarella, eggs, salt, pepper, garlic parmesan cheese and milk into a large bowl. Mix well. Pour into bottom pie crust. Cover with top crust, pressing to seal the edges. Bake for 30 to 40 minutes (ovens and preference varies). Recipe makes 6-8 servings. Enjoy! Love? Love is the most cherished gift that life has to offer. It is also one of life’s greatest mysteries with myriad questions to ponder. Your heart starts to pound, your palms get sweaty, your mind drifts to that person day and night and you may be exhilarated and scared all at the same time. That is the beginning stage of romantic love. Five years later, and perhaps a marriage, children and a mortgage later, you’re no longer jittery around that person, you can definitely focus on your daily tasks, and in fact, you may not think about your significant other for hours at a time while at work. You may even hit a slump where you find yourself questioning, “Am I still in love?” The beginning stages of love are just that; the beginning stages. Love is not defined by a list of symptoms like the flu. It’s not a specific destination nor is it an elusive fairytale. The beauty of love is in the journey, and if we are lucky, that journey can last decades where love deepens and takes on many different forms. In fact, there are times where
we may not even like someone we love, but we would still run to their side or have their back at the drop of a hat (even if we have a scowl on our face while doing it). There are many forms of love. We love our parents, siblings, children, friends, animal companions and life partners. We can love looking at a rainbow or a sunset; and we may love God if that is how we choose to express our faith. Love is not to be judged, but experienced. The beauty of love is that it pulls us out of time and space, and brings us into the present moment. It also helps us in our growth and development as human beings. You cannot grow and expand without experiencing love in all its forms. Love can also be as simple as loving yourself, which is essential before you can love anything or anyone else. The old saying, “You cannot give away what you do not have,” has never been truer. No matter who you are, know that you are not deficient in love, because you are love. Our endless capacity for love is the greatest superpower we possess.
How we define it, measure it, express it, give it and receive it is instrumental in defining the parameters by which we live. We’ve all heard people say things like, “I want to be defined by this,” or “I don’t want to be defined by that.” You are not defined by past mistakes, nor are you defined by what you percieve as your greatest worldly achievements. We are all defined by our ability to give and receive love. You may at times question the love in your life, particularly as it pertains to romantic love. If you are in a new relationship that is still blossoming, enjoy the ride and know that in order for love to grow, it needs to mature into a deeper, more comfortable love. If you are in a longterm relationship or a marriage and you are longing for the days of new love, remind yourself that just as you would not regress to being a baby or a child again, your ripened and developed love could not and should not regress to that of brand new love. Enjoy the richness and depth of well worn love.

April’s Charity of the Month is: Operation S.P.L.A.S.H.
In honor of Earth Day, an annual event celebrated on April 22nd, which brings awareness about environmental conservation, I chose an eco-friendly non-profit on Long Island that strives to help conserve our island.
Operation S.P.L.A.S.H. is a non-profit volunteer ran organization that is committed to improving the quality of life on Long Island Shores. Their mission is to provide a low cost solution to the growing problem of waterfront pollution through public awareness, community action and your participation. S.P.L.A.S.H. stands for Stop Polluting, Littering and Save Harbors. Joanne and Al Grover started Operation S.P.L.A.S.H. in 1990. 2019 is their 29th year of cleaning up our bays, beaches and waterways. Operation S.P.L.A.S.H. has grown from 1 person to several thousand concerned members in 7 chapters dotted all along Long Island’s South Shore.
This organization has 7 boats that go out in our waterways to patrol and pick-up trash and debris between March and November. All of the boats are operated by volunteer captains and crews that give their time to go out on clean-up trips. Clean-up trips usually last about 3 hours. After their boats are taken out of the water for the season, they bring them back to their Freeport headquarters and immediately start to work on them to get them ready for the next season. They have rescued 2,498,267 pounds of trash from our waters in 28 years! The amazing impact that Long Island Waterways sees from the work of Operation S.P.L.A.S.H. is something each of us should be thankful for! County Executive Bellone announces an agreement for Warrior Ranch Foundation to utilize former beagle club property. Warrior Ranch Foundation Helps Veterans and First Responders Suffering from PTSD through Equine Therapy. This program rehabilitates retired race horses for adoption, preventing euthanasia. As participants engage in these activities, they develop bonds, give guidance, demonstrate leadership, and help horses overcome fears. In doing so, participants experience companionship and lower stress levels while participating in activities that are proven to reduce symptoms of PTSD. The Warrior Ranch Foundation rehabilitates troubled horses, making them fit to return home or fit for adoption. In doing so, veterans are able to assist in repurposing these horses while also helping themselves. The Warrior Ranch Foundation is a not-for-profit 501(c)(3) corporation.

practicing multiplication with the Great Array game; identifying remainders with “I’ll have the leftovers”; using logic skills with Super Tic, Tac, Toe; and trying to use their feet in solving a walkable
“no-left turn” maze, before enjoying five different types of pie to eat. “The students all agreed that it was a ‘Pi’-fect day,” said teacher Judd Kramarcik.
Secrets of DNA As part of their affiliation with Brookhaven National Laboratory’s Open Space Stewardship Program, middle schoolers in Islip’s EXCEL program recently tackled DNA barcoding to identify organisms they found last fall with naturalist Brett Curlew in nearby Pardees Pond. “We went out and did some collecting of
invertebrates, plants and abiotic components to find out what was going on,” said Curlew. “The students had a driving question: They wanted to see if the biodiversity changed from the north side of the pond to the south side, so they collected samples from both ends. Now what they are doing is extracting DNA from those samples to

As part of a social studies unit on civics and government, thirdgraders at Islip’s Sherwood Elementary School were visited by Suffolk County
Legislator Tom Cilmi for a discussion of the process. Cilmi detailed the branches of government for the students as well as the importance of political
parties, while student questions included what it’s like to be a legislator and whether Cilmi plans to run for senator.
Love of Languages National Foreign Language Week was celebrated in the East Islip High School’s library from March 4-8, bringing a diversity of cultures to the forefront, including American Sign Language. For ASL Day, advanced students signed popular songs, taught vocabulary and the alphabet as well as other survival signs, and played fun, interactive games to spread deaf awareness.
On a day for Italian culture, students danced the Neapolitan tarantella. In Dr. Janet Hiller’s annual Foreign Language Week poster contest, Olivia Zhang took first place, Shannon Wodicka came in second and Olivia Pena in third, with Christian Guiliano earning honorable mention. Hiller, the district’s retired world language chairperson, provided the winners with Barnes & Noble gift cards.

Revitalizing Suffolk's Shellfish Industry Suffolk County Executive Steve Bellone will join with local businesses and members of the shell fishing industry to announce a pilot program designed to assist local oyster farmers and stimulate the industry by allowing vendors to expand their retail opportunities. The County Executive will introduce legislation
to implement an Annual Temporary Event Permit for vendors of shellfish grown or harvested in Long Island waters and slash red tape. In addition, the County Executive will announce a one-page resource guide to provide an overview of the industry to assist residents in buying local. Long Island has a rich heritage in oyster

A “Product”-ive Meeting Islip High School students from the school’s Business Leadership Academy recently participated in a business breakfast, followed by a question-and-answer session with guest speaker Robert Modica, a field representative supervisor from worldwide meat distributor Porky Products Inc. The students learned about career opportunities and the vast amount of jobs needed to run a worldwide organization. “A good work ethic is the most important attribute that all employees need,” Modica told the students. “Your desire
to achieve goals in life, whether personally or professionally, should always be guided by your morals and work ethic.” Many of the 25 seniors, juniors and sophomores enrolled in the academy are interested in majoring in business management, finance, accounting or marketing in college; others want to start their own businesses and learn how they are managed. The academy students meet monthly with Islip business teachers and business professionals to learn about the world of business and opportunities that exist. Students also
take field trips to various businesses where they talk to employees and learn about the ins and outs of moving up the corporate ladder. “Students are intrigued to learn about the different types of careers and businesses that exist,” said Curt Juengerkes, the high school’s assistant principal and coordinator of the careers department and Business Leadership Academy. “The guest speakers are from different industries, with diverse backgrounds and education, and this forum inspires our students to expand their horizons.”
