Just over one month ago, the Long Island Game Farm - Wildlife Park & Children’s Zoo welcomed two fluffy Blackbelly sheep into its enormous family one female and one male. In addition, another female was born three weeks later! When the Game Farm finally opens its doors next month, visitors will be able to get a glimpse of all three for the very first time. The three newest American Blackbelly sheep were bred and born right on the grounds of the Game Farm. They will be

featured in the nursery section of the farm, and guests will be able to bottle feed these adorable, ebonycolored animals beginning on opening day - April 12th, during scheduled times throughout the day. Since the sheep do not have names yet, the Game Farm has initiated a naming contest for all three newborns. Contestants may visit the Game Farm’s Facebook page to enter the contest for a chance to win a Family Fun Pass. Those who wish to participate can enter one name for each of

the three baby sheep. The American Blackbelly sheep are small to medium-sized sheep that are extremely energetic and playful. They are a type of hair sheep and are actually a cross between Barbados Blackbelly with the Mouflon and the Rambouillet sheep. They all have distinct coat pattern, which range from tan, to brown, to red with black markings. Rams generally display spectacular horns, while ewes generally are polled, which means hornless. Typically, they grow more or less wool according to winter conditions. “We are so excited to introduce these three cuddly babies to our guests this upcoming season,” says Melinda Novak, CoOwner, Long Island Game Farm. “They are adorably friendly animals that will be sure to put smiles on our visitors’ faces.” The deadline for submissions is May 31st. Golf Season Opens County Executive Steve Bellone was by joined Legislator Jay Schneiderman, Legislator Thomas Cilmi, Suffolk officials and a dozen Suffolk County veterans to announce the opening of the 2014 golf season and new fee reductions for veterans and active military personnel. The new legislation, sponsored by Deputy Presiding Officer Schneiderman, (I-Montauk) expands a pilot program that make the veteran fee reductions at county golf courses permanent. “After one of the harshest winters on record, we gather to say goodbye to winter and hello to the 2014 Suffolk County Golf Season with new discounted rates

for veterans and active military personnel,” said Suffolk County Executive Bellone. “I thank Legislator Schneiderman for sponsoring this legislation to reduce military veterans’ golfing fees permanently in Suffolk County.” “Members of the military serve to protect the freedoms of this country,” said Deputy Presiding Officer Schneiderman. “This is one small way we can show our appreciation to the men and women of the armed forces.” Suffolk has four countyowned golf courses, each with distinct characteristics ranging from panoramic shoreline vistas to tree-lined, undulating fairways. The four courses are Indian Island Golf Course in

Riverhead, Bergen Point Golf Course in Babylon, West Sayville Golf Course, and Timber Point Golf Course in Great River. Each course is staffed by a PGA professional and includes: a driving range, a practice green and a full service restaurant and catering facility. Are We There Yet? By: Jamie Lynn Ryan Is it safe to assume that spring has truly arrived at this point? Are we done with the random, sudden snowstorms - you know, the ones originally forecast as a 50% chance of rain? Can we begin the planting process without fear of our blossoms being petrified by the next deep freeze? One can only hope. At least baseball is back. Both New York teams seem to have great potential for success this season, assuming everyone stays healthy and on the

roster for more than a month, of course. Being a lifelong Yankees fan, the biggest attraction is the thrill of witnessing Derek Jeter’s farewell season, a celebration of a true class act. Along with the start of spring sports comes the prospect of beach weather just beyond the horizon, outdoor concerts and long, lazy afternoons spent in the warmth of the sun. Well, in an ideal world, anyway. For those of us in the workforce, the weekends are the only time to truly capitalize – and doesn’t it

always seem like it rains on those days? Of course, there’s something to be said for tackling that “spring” cleaning we’ve been putting off for the last year or so. And that closet… I don’t know about you all, but the nicer weather motivates me to do some serious shopping – if only I had room to stuff one more hanger in between the massive wardrobe collection that has taken up permanent residence. Carpeting has long been a reliable flooring option to keep rooms looking good and feeling comfortable underfoot. There’s something to be said about having a plush, warm cushion on the floors of a home. Carpeting can help buffer sounds and minimize injuries from falls. Walking around on a padded surface may minimize back and joint pain as well as feel more comfortable when going barefoot. Despite all of the advantages to carpeting, some people continue to avoid it for a variety of reasons, many of which are rooted in myth. The following are a few of the more common myths associated with carpeting. • Myth: Carpeting contributes to allergens constantly circulating throughout the home. • Fact: Carpeting is actually better at trapping allergens and dust in its fibers than smooth-surface floors. That means that with carpeting there are fewer particles airborne and circulating. Regular vacuuming can remove

trapped allergens. • Myth: Carpets pose significant health risks. • Fact: Extensive toxicological assessments of the components of carpet have been studied through the years. There has been no conclusive evidence that carpets present any health risk, particularly of a carcinogenic nature. • Myth: Carpet is a source of indoor air quality problems. • Fact: Regular cleaning and vacuuming of carpet reduces the number of allergens contained within, which makes carpet no more likely to contribute to air quality issues than any other type of flooring. • Myth: Carpet has formaldehyde in it. • Fact: Formaldehyde was removed from the carpet-manufacturing process in 1978. Suffolk Jail Tours children over the age of 13. When someone requests a personal jail tour for their teen through the Sheriff’s website, it will initiate a call from a Correction Officer who will often talk with the parent about the problems they are having with their child, and an appointment is made to visit the Riverhead Correctional Facility, in a group setting or individually. Once they arrive at the jail, the youth and their parents will learn about the day-to-day life inside the correctional facility. After the introduction, the Correction Officer will show them the crowded holding cells and walk through different housing areas. The tour ends in the jail’s chapel area where inmates will talk frankly with the youth about how their own poor decisions led to incarceration. “A lot of the kids and their parents are very emotional

I got in! Last week, as I was going through my e-mails, I was pleasantly surprised to see one addressed from Emory University. It told me to check the online portal to learn of my admission decision. Thankfully, when I checked the website, I was accepted. Located in Atlanta, Georgia, Emory University is one of the nation’s leading schools for Business and Journalism. Luckily, these are the two fields I have interest in pursuing. Emory University is the twentieth ranked college in the United States of America. Although not many

people from Long Island have heard of Emory, the opportunities that it will afford me are endless. As I was admitted into Oxford College, one of Emory’s freshman and sophomore institutions, I will be an upperclassman during my second year. This would allow me to take advantage of the leadership positions historically reserved for seniors. Involving myself in oncampus happenings will strengthen my application for graduate school and enrich my campus experience. Even though Emory is very far away, it has a perfect mix of urban

and rural influences. My parents are hesitant for me to enroll, as it is in a foreign area. It is hard to pass up such a prestigious education, so I have to visit to be sure it is the right place for me. As I write this article, I am sitting on a plane headed for Atlanta, row 35, seat C, contemplating my future. In a few hours, I will be on campus, where I hope to spend my next four years. Next week, I hope to tell you about my experience. I hope it is a positive one! With any luck, I will meet some very nice people and have a great time. Go Eagles!

When Suffolk County Sheriff Vincent DeMarco began offering “Youth Enlightenment” personal jail tours in 2010 for parents and their at-risk youth, he didn’t realize the impact it would have on the teenage participants. “We wanted to show young people the realities of jail: the loud sounds of cells clanking shut, the lack of privacy, the noises, and we wanted these youth to come away with a strong feeling that jail was not a place they wanted to be,” stated DeMarco. He added, “But what we learned over time by giving these tours is that the parents of these defiant kids really need support. The Correction Officers who run these tours have become a resource for parents who don’t know where else to turn for help.” The personal jail tours are available to Suffolk County residents and their

Five extraordinary friends will join together for the second consecutive year on Sunday, May 25th for a 125-mile adventure. The journey will take them from the Brooklyn Bridge to Montauk Point on foot to raise funds for Developmental Disabilities Institute (DDI), the leading service provider for children and adults with Autism on Long Island, as well as bring about awareness of Autism and other developmental disabilities. “Our journey from the Brooklyn Bridge to Montauk was more than just 128 miles,” commented Nathan Holmes. “The experience that we had completing “From the Bridge to the Beach: Walking LI for Autism” changed our lives in the most positive way imaginable. The opportunity to meet the children and teachers at several school programs demonstrated to us firsthand the incredible value of the services that DDI provides. We were moved

by the warm receptions and motivated to keep walking by the electric enthusiasm when we were sent off on our way, especially from the young students.” Nathan Holmes and John Kenny will join with Morgan Zajkowski, Liam Kenny, and Michael Sardone for the sevenday expedition, averaging 17.9 miles per day with stops along the way will include multiple DDI sites. Planting a garden can add aesthetic appeal and functionality to a property. Vegetable gardens can transform landscapes while putting healthy and homegrown food on the table. By growing their own fruits and vegetables, homeowners have total control over what foods can be harvested, and they can ensure sustainable, safe practices are used to care for the plants. Vegetable gardens can be compact or expansive, depending on how much space is available to cultivate. However, firsttime gardeners may want to begin small so they can hone their skills and experiment to see which plants are most likely to thrive in their gardens. Expansion is always a possibility down the road. Choose A Location Spend some time examining your landscape. Vegetables generally need ample warmth and

sunlight to thrive, so find an area of the yard that gets several hours of direct sunlight per day. A sunny spot is good, but you also want a location with adequate drainage so your garden does not succumb to flooding or fungus during and after heavy downpours. Don’t place the garden too close to rain gutters or near a pool, where splash-out may occur. Select a location that is isolated from pets so the plants are not trampled and cats and dogs do not relieve themselves nearby. Decide What To Plant When deciding what to plant, consider what you eat and how much produce the household consumes, then choose vegetables that fit with your diet. Some vegetables, like peppers, tomatoes, eggplant, and squash, produce throughout the season. Others, such as carrots and corn, produce one crop and then expire.

Plan accordingly when you purchase plants or seeds, as you want enough food but not so much that it will go to waste. Choose three to four different vegetables and plant them in the garden. Select varieties that require similar soil conditions, so that you can adjust the pH and mix of the soil accordingly. This will serve as good practice, particularly the first year of your garden. After you have mastered the basics, you can branch out into other produce. Know When To Plant Many of the foods grown in vegetable gardens, including tomatoes and peppers, are summer vegetables, which means they reach peak ripeness after the height of the summer season. Add Color To Kitchen Cabinets Many homeowners dream of giving their kitchens a full-scale remodel. Though such a project can give a kitchen an entirely new look, that look does not come cheap. According to Remodeling magazine’s 2013 “Cost vs. Value Report,” homeowners can expect to spend more than $53,000 on a major kitchen remodel and recoup just below 70 percent of that cost at resale. So while the idea of a full-scale kitchen remodel might be a dream project, the cost of such an undertaking is beyond many homeowners’ budgets. But homeowners who cannot afford a full remodel can still give their kitchens a new look and can do so for relatively little money. Painting kitchen cabinets a new color or simply giving fading cabinets a fresh coat of paint can instantly add life to a

kitchen, giving the room an entirely different feel without breaking the bank. The following are a few tips for homeowners planning to paint their kitchen cabinets. Assess your existing cabinets. Some cabinet materials, including wood and metal, can be repainted without much of a fuss. But other materials, including plastic laminate, are not so amenable to repainting, and will likely require specialty paints. Homeowners with plastic laminate cabinets should first paint a spot or two with a sample paint, being careful to choose a spot that’s concealed. If the paint bonds well to the plastic laminate, then you can go forward and buy enough paint to redo all of the cabinets. If the paint does not take, consult a professional to find a paint that’s likely to be a better fit. Expect this process to be one of trial

and error. Plan for ornate cabinets to take a little longer. Painting projects will go faster when cabinets have flat fronts, but they can take considerably longer when cabinets are unique and more detailed. If your cabinets are ornate, then factor this extra time into your schedule. Remove the doors and hardware. When painting cabinets, it’s best to essentially disassemble them, removing the doors, handles, knobs, latches, and any additional hardware. When removing hardware, be sure to set them aside in clearly marked plastic bags so it’s easier to reassemble the cabinets once the fresh coat of paint has dried. As doors are removed, number each door and its corresponding location, much like products that require assembly are numbered at the factory. This makes it easier to

reassemble and ensures the cabinets and their hinges will align properly once you have finished painting. Don’t paint dirty surfaces. Cabinet surfaces have likely collected their share of dirt, grease and grime over the years, so you want to clean these surfaces thoroughly before painting. Once surfaces have been cleaned, rinse them off and give them ample time to dry. Sand the surfaces. Once the surfaces have been cleaned and are completely dry, it’s time to start sanding them. Lightly sand the doors using a wood sanding block, working to create a firm base to which fresh paint can easily adhere. Areas that are most exposed to wear and tear may require some extra elbow grease, and some areas may be especially flaky. When old paint is flaking off, this means

the previous finish did not adhere very well to the surface, which is not necessarily uncommon in kitchens, where moisture and grease residue can make it harder for paint to adhere to the surface. In such instances, sand the flaky areas to the bare wood before spot-priming with a primer or sealer designed for areas with heavy staining. After all of the sanding is complete, vacuum the surfaces to ensure there is no leftover sanding dust before painting. Apply primer-sealer. Primer-sealer ensures the fresh paint will bond well to the surfaces, preventing conditions like flaking in the future. Paint the cabinets. After the primer-sealer has been applied, it’s time to paint the cabinets. Begin with the inside edges and openings of the face frames, followed by the outer cabinet sides and then the front of

the frames. Then move on to the cabinet doors and any drawer fronts you might be painting as well. Cabinets with more elaborate designs require closer attention to detail than flat cabinets. When painting, opt for thin coats, which dry more quickly and also create fewer visible brushstrokes. When applying multiple coats, allow the paint ample time to dry between coats. Four hours between coats is a good rule of thumb, and lightly resand all surfaces before applying the second and final coat of paint. Reassemble the cabinets. Once the final coat of paint has fully dried, carefully reassemble your cabinets and then enjoy the fresh and inexpensive new look that your freshly painted cabinets have created.

Breakfast Of Champions The spring season opened on March 27th with a win at Half Hollow Hills West for the East Islip varsity boys track team. While the wind had died down a bit from earlier in the week, the cold remained, but the athletes found the best way to Honoring sixth- and seventh-grade students who demonstrated the “Six Pillars of Character” during the 2013-2014 school year, East Islip Middle School held its seventh annual Breakfast of Champions on the morning of March 11th. Each honoree was chosen by a team or department at the middle school. After greetings from Principal Mark Bernard, the school’s two assistant principals, Christian Seifert and Jason Stanton, presented each honoree with a certificate and lanyard commemorating his or her special achievement. After the

ceremony, the students enjoyed sharing breakfast with their families and the school staff. In order to raise awareness and show support for students with Down syndrome who are integrated into the East Islip School District, the school’s career development program encouraged the many participating students and staff to wear brightly colored or funny

socks. The idea behind it was that the socks would provoke questions, providing opportunities for the wearers to inform others about World Down Syndrome Day, which is celebrated annually on March 21st to symbolize the third copy of the 21st chromosome in people with Down syndrome. “We currently have and have had several students with Down syndrome in the career development

All 10 Pet Supplies Plus locations on Long Island have participated in a “buy a pound/donate a pound” program to benefit pets in need. During the donation period of February 10th to March 9th, for every pound of Evo, Innova, Cal Natural, Iams or Eukanuba dog food
