he East Islip Middle School eighth-grade Girls Leaders Club recently visited the Long Island State Veterans Home in Stony Brook for a morning of creative crafts and tribute to the veterans. During the annual visit, supervised by club adviser Diane Wahrenburg, the students worked with the veterans to make cards and posters. Music Lovers Club The Music Lovers Club was founded in 1925 to share an interest in and appreciation of music, to extend to others the pleasure derived therefrom and to provide scholarships to outstanding young musicians who are seniors in high school and live in the towns of Babylona and Islip. This year, the 65th Annual Scholarship Benefit will be presented on Sunday, April 26th. The performers for the concert will be this year’s winners. They will join a

list of almost 200 other winners from the past 64 years. Following the performance, they will receive their scholarship awards. Time for Buddy: The Sequel. As some of my more loyal readers may recall, I recently adopted my very own Betta fish, Buddy. He’s currently one and a half months old in time-spent-in-myfishbowl years, which has already surpassed the lifespan of most of my previous goldfish, surely a good sign. Like most fishy friends, it seems Buddy’s main mission is to eat. Constantly. Every time he catches a glimpse of me, here he comes, face pressed up against the glass, ﬂippers “wagging”

expectantly. And then there’s the chewing. The adorable motion he makes when consuming his special Betta ﬂakes is nothing short of precious. Who knew fish had teeth! Aside from his daily meal, Buddy seems content to swim endless laps around his prized plant decoration, occasionally knocking it from the gravel in his mad exuberance. Once exhausted, he generally settles under one of the branches for a little ﬂoating shut-eye – with eyes wide open of course. That usually only lasts until the instant he spies me, as even the slightest

prospect of food ends any siesta. Sure, he may not be as entertaining as a puppy or kitten or some other furry critter, but Buddy provides his own unique level of amusement from beyond the bowl. I think he’s adjusted quite well to life as a member of my household. Of course, that may be said for anyone who feeds him but… I still say Buddy and I have developed a special bond. Here’s hoping for many more milestones celebrated with my new fishy friend – and many more meals consumed together!

Distinguished Honor

Jonathan Nelson of Bay Shore High School has been named a “Distinguished Teacher of 2015” by the Harvard Club of Long Island. “Our awards honor teachers who transform lives,” explained Dr. Judith Esterquest, Harvard Club of Long Island Chair of the Distinguished Teacher Selection Committee. “Dedicated teachers like Mr. Nelson offer Long Island students deep expertise, extraordinary talents, and countless hours of devotion. By capturing the minds and imaginations of our children, preparing them for challenges that were unknown even a few decades ago — academic, social, political, cultural — these teachers shape our country’s future.” One of fourteen teachers from across Long Island to receive this award — from across the 150 public school districts and private schools on Long Island — Mr. Nelson will be honored at the Harvard Club of Long Island’s annual University Relations Luncheon on April 26. Following the award ceremony, Alyssa A. Goodman, Professor of Astronomy at Harvard University, will highlight her work at the boundary of astrophysics and data visualization. Today’s scientific breakthroughs often depend on scientists employing visualization tools to gain insight and draw conclusions from tremendously large and

diverse data sets. Prof. Goodman’s lecture, entitled “Seeing Science,” will be structured as a historical saga, beginning with Galileo, and ending with how virtual reality and immersive tools are changing how we “see” stars forming and arteries hardening. Mr. Nelson, who heads the International Baccalaureate program and teaches Theory of Knowledge for juniors and seniors at Bay Shore High School, has taught AP English, Sophomore Humanities, and Creative Nonfiction, among other courses, over the past two decades. He holds a BA in English from Columbia College, a masters in English Education from Columbia Teachers College, and an advanced graduate certificate in administration from Stony Brook University. Prior to teaching he worked as a healthcare management consultant, specializing in due diligence for companies manufacturing cardiovascular devices, for example, angioplasty catheters, vascular grafts, and pacemakers. The quality of Mr. Nelson’s teaching has achieved widespread recognition: most recently, he was named Dowling College/News 12 Educator of the month two years ago and, in 2001, the NYS English Council named him Teacher of Excellence. Coaching awards include

Suffolk County Soccer Coaches Association 2007 League II Coach of the Year and 1994 JV Coach of the Year. The District awarded him its SCOPE Award for Teacher service in 2013 and its Sallie Mae First Class Teacher Award in 1994. This spring, Mr. Nelson is leading a ten-day school exchange trip to Denmark with 28 of his students. After spending a few days in Copenhagen, learning about Danish culture, history, and art — and taking a bicycle tour of the city — they will spend six days at an upper secondary school in Odense, each student staying with a host family and working on collaborative education projects comparing our cultures, societies, politics, and literature. For the last four years, the Bay Shore students have reciprocated by hosting visiting Danish students for a week in October. As avocations, Mr. Nelson enjoys reading and travel, and avidly follows British Premier League Soccer, especially the Arsenal Football Club. An active athlete, he participates in an over-30 men’s soccer league and USTA tennis leagues. Married for 23 years to Laura Bothfeld, he and his wife enjoy their two teenage children, Olivia and Henry; and, as a family, caring for their 80-pound dog, a black Labrador/ terrier mix named Feste (after the clown from Shakespeare’s Twelfth Night). Over his career, Mr. Nelson has written recommendations for 150 or more of his students. Nominated this year by Asia Stewart, a former Bay Shore High School student who will graduate from Harvard College in June 2018, Mr. Nelson was described as “interested not only in the academic skills of his students, but in their well-being, making time to devote many hours to each and every one of us.” “Mr Nelson expanded my mind and world,

and taught me to question my beliefs and preconceived notions,” Ms. Stewart explained, “even challenging me as a writer, one of the only teachers I’ve met who told me how my writing style needed to change.” “Mr. Nelson’s program was honestly the hardest experience of my high school career,” continued Ms. Stewart, “but also the most worthwhile: He truly prepared me for the academic rigor I have found at Harvard.” Mr. Nelson’s sage guidance “followed me to college,” she concluded, repeating advice that changed how she engaged the world, “You can do anything, but not everything.” Mr. Nelson was nominated in 2013 by Erin Corcoran, who graduated from Harvard College in 2014 and entered the Bay Shore IB program in its second year. Ms. Corcoran described Mr. Nelson as “engaging and thoughtprovoking,” “always there when I needed to talk,” and “his life was IB and it really showed.” Further, she noted that her IB “experience was absolutely amazing for me.” In 2005, the first year of the Harvard Club awards, Emily Katz, who was then a senior at Harvard College, wrote, “Mr. Nelson was the first person to encourage me to speak for myself.” She described Mr. Nelson a a “great teacher” who made it easy to debate because his “respect and admiration for students” was unmistakable. At the ceremony on April 26, the Harvard Club of Long Island will announce the Distinguished Teachers of 2015 who will also receive scholarships for a “Harvard experience” at the Harvard University campus in Cambridge, Mass. Past winners of the scholarships have enhanced their teaching by sampling some of the resources available to Harvard students. They have met with

faculty; visited research laboratories, rare book archives, and specialty museums; and enjoyed visual and performance art. The scholarships are funded by contributions from Harvard alumni living on Long Island. “We are proud to honor these teachers, whose efforts enable our Long Island students to thrive at top universities and to be upstanding citizens,” said Dr. Rhonda Berger, Harvard Club of Long Island President. When Superintendent of Schools Dr. Karen B. Salmon learned of this award, she observed, “Jon Nelson is the one teacher we all wish our daughters, sons, grandchildren and other family members could have the opportunity to learn from; he is engaging, charismatic, knowledgeable and passionate about teaching.” Noting that “Our entire Bay Shore team strives to provide students with a learning environment that fosters intellectual curiosity, independent thinking and creativity,” Dr. Salmon further commented “Mr. Nelson is a perfect representation of those goals being successfully met.” “Mr. Nelson has demonstrated incredible vision in the development and implementation of Bay Shore School District’s International Baccalaureate program,” Dr. Salmon continued. “He has inspired our students to pursue course work that is rigorous, focuses on high quality learning, and encourages them to become lifelong learners who will assist in creating a more peaceful world through intercultural understanding and respect.” “Like all of our teachers,” Dr. Salmon concluded, “Mr. Nelson is an integral part of ensuring that our students leave Bay Shore ready for college or a career — and a fulfilling and engaged life.”

This year’s fourteen Distinguished Teacher Award winners were nominated by current Harvard undergraduates and then selected by Harvard Club of Long Island board members. This year’s award winners teach biology, chemistry, earth science, English, history, International Baccalaureate, Latin, math, music, science research, and Spanish. The winners teach in the Baldwin, Bay Shore, Bellmore-Merrick, East Meadow, Island Trees, Jericho, Plainedge, Sachem, Sewanhaka, Syosset and Three Villages school districts, as well as St. Anthony’s High School and The Stony Brook School. Prior winners of this award from the Bay Shore district include history teachers Patricia Ponzi in 2006 and Suzanne Litrel, who was named a Fellow of the Harvard Club of Long Island in 2012 and awarded a scholarship for a Harvard “experience” where she reconnected with her thesis advisor and mentor from University of Michigan, now at Harvard, and did research for her next novel. Harvard College has received 37,303 applications from the US and abroad for the Class of 2019 (almost 700 from Long Island) and will accept about 5%. “Over the past 20 years, Harvard has accepted students from more than two-thirds of the public, private, parochial, and charter high schools on Long Island,” remarked Carolyn Hughes, who chairs the Harvard Club of Long Island’s Schools & Scholarships Committee, which ensures that every Long Island applicant to Harvard gets a personal alumni interview. Mrs. Hughes noted that 70% of Harvard undergrads receive financial aid, based exclusively on need, with Harvard providing above $180 million in scholarship aid this year.

Painting Pinkies Islip Middle School introduced some compassionate excitement on two Mondays during March, with students’ pinkies painted blue as part of “Mani for a Cure to Bullying.” Sponsored by the school’s Art Club and student government with the support of the PTA, Mani Mondays promoted kindness and empathy among the community. At the March 9th and 23rd events, manicure stations were set up during lunch

periods outside the school cafeterias, and the middle schoolers had their pinkie nails painted with blue nail polish to show support for kindness to all students, and to act as volunteer manicurists. “I think it’s a great way to show support for anti-bullying,” said eighth-grader Kerry Monahan, a member of student government who volunteered to paint nails at the event. “It’s so simple and anyone can do it.” “The intention of the

event was for students to stand up for kindness and compassion and let people know that it’s not OK to bully others,” said student government advisers Sue Lange and Shari Pennington. “The event was a huge success and we had an excellent turnout, with many students excited to show their support. Students are becoming educated and aware that what they say and do does truly impact other people’s lives.”

Accepting The Challenge Islip’s Commack Road Elementary School was the recipient of a March 10th visit from Rachel’s Challenge, an organization that was formed in memory of Rachel Joy Scott, a victim in the 1999 Columbine High School tragedy. Scott believed in the transformative power of kindness, and that one act of kindness could start a chain reaction. During the presentation, students learned how to start their own “chain

of kindness,” both at school and in the greater community. Commack Road proudly accepted Rachel’s Challenge, and each student had the opportunity to sign the “I Accept Rachel’s Challenge” poster displayed in the main lobby. Parents, middle- and high-school students, and community members were invited back for a Rachel’s Challenge presentation on March 13, so that they too could hear Scott’s inspiring story. At the meeting, Ann

Hess’s third-grade class led Commack Road in joining together the first links on their chain of kindness. In just a few short days, the chain had already stretched across the auditorium. According to Principal Jeannette Feminella, Commack Road will continue adding links of kindness and plans to keep the chain reaction going for the rest of the year. Dahill’s drawing “Yukon” is a self-portrait of the artist wearing the hide of a bear. “Through the use of delicate line work and saturated color gradients, he conveyed the importance of embracing what you are passionate about,” said Figliozzi, who noted that Dahill is continuing to explore this idea in the body of work he is developing for the concentration section of his Advanced Placement drawing exam.

Value Of Freedom The East Islip Middle School eighth-grade Girls Leaders Club recently visited the Long Island State Veterans Home in Stony Brook for a morning of creative crafts and tribute to the veterans. During the annual visit, supervised by club adviser Diane Wahrenburg, the students worked with the

veterans to make cards and posters. The veterans talked about their lives outside the military, told stories of their military days, shared heartfelt memories and gave lifechanging advice to the students. “This field trip was one of our favorites,” said Leaders Club Vice President

Victoria Keenan. “It was a true eye-opener and taught us the value of devotion to a cause. We learned to give back to the people to whom we owe it all. Our veterans really drove home the point that freedom isn’t free – truly an important lesson to learn.”

Legislator Tom Cilmi, along with members of the Suffolk County Detachment Marine Corps League, and Babylon American Legion Post 94, met with East Islip Middle School students who participate in the “Builders Club.” The Club works under the direction of their advisor, Ms. Rena Costello, to collect and send care packages to Marine Corps troops in combat. The group met at the East Islip Post Office and afterwards

at Legislator Cilmi’s office where they ate pizza and engaged in lively discussions with several veterans in attendance. Packages are sent out weekly. Cilmi, who paid the shipping costs for the packages, praised the effort and talked with the students about the U.S. Constitution and the

sacrifices made by those in the armed forces. “It’s great to see this club growing,” he said. “Ms. Costello is a patriot in the truest sense of the word and cares deeply about the men and women who so profoundly give of themselves to fight for the ideals that make this Country great. It’s inspiring for me and it’s clearly inspiring for these young Americans. I couldn’t be more proud of these students.”

Prioritizing safety, the Islip School District has finalized the operation of its new visitor management system, one that will prove instrumental in helping monitor guests to the buildings. The system’s hardware will be fully installed in time for the first day of use on Monday, April 13th. A crucial part of the district’s long-range plans, the core of the system was paid for as part of the capital bond project approved in 2012. In the first phase, vestibule work was completed for the start

of school last fall, with enhanced security cameras for receptionist access to visitors. All security monitors at each building were also provided with updated visitor and access control training during Superintendent’s Conference Day. The system offers an advanced level of safety procedures. In the past, visitors simply scrawled their names – often with unidentifiable signatures – in paper books as they entered a building. The VMS, by contrast, insures that all guests will need

New System to present a driver’s license or other photo ID (for residents without an ID, information can also be input manually). The system will read the license or ID, akin to a credit card swipe, and automatically check it against the national sex offender database. A photo will be taken, and a special pass will be created that displays the visitor’s photo. The entire procedure will take less than 10 seconds and will be consistent for every visitor at each of Islip’s schools. The VMS will allow the district to know exactly when a visitor arrives and leaves, and who is in a particular building at any given time. “This puts Islip way ahead of the curve for security and will be a helpful safety measure for staff, students and visitors,” said Donald Flynn, the district’s security consultant.
