ast Islip’s Timber Point Elementary School recently celebrated the annual Pick a Reading Partner program with a theme of pirates and mermaid princesses, roping in Principal Danielle Naccarato and creating decorated ships and hats. Timber Point students showed how much they “treasured” reading by reading treasured books at home with their reading partner, and then sharing the messages of the books by making message-in-a-bottle displays.

Long Island Game Farm Opens The Long Island Game Farm - Wildlife Park & Children’s Zoo officially opens for the season the weekend of Saturday, April 16th and Sunday, April 17th. Now in its 47th season, the park has long provided Long Island students and families with a wide array of animals, education, and most of all fun. As part of its opening

celebrations, the zoo will once again have an array of baby animals in the nursery barn during its springtime hours. The Game Farm will be open from Thursday to Sunday, April 21st to 24th and Wednesday to Sunday from April 27th to May 1st. The park will be open on a limited schedule in early May and will ultimately

be open seven days a week beginning Wednesday, May 25th. For information regarding dates and hours of operation, please see the events calendar on the Game Farm’s website. In addition to hand feeding and petting its animals, the Game Farm is excited to announce its new Ranger Eric Live Animal Show, which is being held

at 1 p.m. on May 14th and May 21st. David Rosaire’s Dog Show will also return to the zoo beginning Saturday, May 28th. “We are looking forward to the 2016 Summer Season,” says Melinda Novak, Vice President/CoOwner, Long Island Game Farm - Wildlife Park & Children’s Zoo. “In the meantime, we’re hard at

work planning the special events we’ll host this year. We can’t wait to see everyone.” The Game Farm will be open on the following dates over the next two months: April 16th-17th, 21st-24th and 27th-30th and May 1st, 5th-8th, 11th-15th, 18th-22nd and 25th-31st. After that time, the zoo will be open seven days a

Marathon Funds Distributed County Executive Steve Bellone said. “Through a broad range of services, these organizations take a variety of approaches to help veterans adjust and return to their civilian lives. I am proud of the success of the first marathon, and the fact that we’re able to strengthen services delivered to veterans.” Legislator Steve Stern, who announced the awards, said, “As Chairman of the Veterans Committee of the Suffolk County Legislature, I have the privilege of working with and for the brave men and women who have served our great nation and their families. I am honored to participate in today’s event, distributing the proceeds of Suffolk County’s first marathon to local veterans organizations to fulfill our responsibility to ensure that we provide not just our thanks, but meaningful support to those who have sacrificed so much for us all. I look forward to this year’s marathon, which I am sure will be an even

greater success and thank County Executive Steve Bellone, Veterans Services Agency Director Tom Ronayne and members of the Suffolk County Veterans Grant Committee for their hard work in making this event such a resounding success.” The Catholic Health Services Second Annual Marathon will be run on October 30th, with a full marathon, a half marathon and a newly added 5K. Net proceeds will again go to benefit local veterans’ services. The race will be followed by the Freedom Fest, which will feature local produced foods, award-winning wines and beers, and live entertainment. Suffolk County officials announced Thursday, March 24th the names of organizations that have been chosen to receive funds from the proceeds of the first annual Suffolk County Marathon. Nineteen organizations received awards ranging from $2,500 to $23,600 from the nearly $160,000 net proceeds from the September 13th, 2015 race. Recipients were chosen by the Suffolk County Marathon Fund Disbursement Advisory Committee, which assessed the needs of Suffolk County’s veteran population, established criteria for awarding funds to charitable registered 501(c)(3) organizations providing services to local Suffolk County veterans, and established priorities and develop a list of goals and objectives in order to rank applications. “With these awards, we can provide the services that our veterans need when they return home from service,” Suffolk

Afterwards, the students were given a chance to ask Victoria questions, then go up for a first hand look at the animals she brought with her. Fourth grade teacher Vanessa Sobotko first met Victoria last spring at the Sweetbriar Nature Center in Smithtown where Victoria was exhibiting

her pets at their annual Wildlife and Craft Fair. After the two discussed Victoria’s educational program, Ms. Sobotko reached out to Victoria the next day and invited her to give her presentation to the fourth grade students at her school the following year. Victoria was very impressed with Ms. Sobotko and extremely honored that she would select a date for her visit almost a year in advance.

555 By: Jamie Lynn Ryan 555 columns, 556 with this one. Ten years, soon to be eleven. Such are the minimilestones of my journalistic career here at South Bay’s Neighbor Newspapers. Throw in a dozen or so “In Season” columns from our South Bay’s Seasons™ Magazine, and you have quite the collection of musings on life from me (with the occasional contribution from Buddy the Betta) over the last decade or so of my life. Impressive? Sure, if you enjoy what I have to say. Voluminous? Without a doubt. I have often considered the prospect of sifting through these past essays and compiling some sort of anthology – the highlights, the

lowlights, a snapshot of those topics that seemed worthy of putting pen to paper, or finger to keyboard, as the case may be. Quite the undertaking, and perhaps only for my own self-satisfaction, but a worthy effort nonetheless. Maybe throw in a few photographs to accent the project… weave in a bit of narrative to segue from one chapter to the next… Upon briefly scanning through some of the titles, I see a selection of heartfelt profiles of friends and family members who have left an imprint on my life, a few humorous “rants about nothing” on those dayto-day occurrences that seem to plague us all, a fair share of seasonal and holidaythemed edit, a handful of monumentally exciting

events (I got to interview Don Mattingly??) and… well, a host of columns that can only be categorized as “other,” those musings that delve into the philosophical, my own analysis of life as we know it. A bit uneven? Surely. Representative of my frame of mind at any given moment during the course of the last 10-going-on-11 years? Absolutely. And isn’t that what it’s all about? The opportunity to capture a moment in time, by any means, and transmit it to the public, through any medium, is a priceless one. How lucky I am to have had the chance to do so. 555 times. Pirates of PARP East Islip’s Timber Point Elementary School recently celebrated the annual Pick a Reading Partner program with a theme of pirates and mermaid princesses, roping in Principal Danielle Naccarato and creating decorated ships and hats. The program was organized by PTA members Alyson Ferreby and Marianne Gilmore. Timber Point students showed how much they “treasured” reading by reading treasured books at

home with their reading partner, and then sharing the messages of the books by making message-in-abottle displays. Each class at Timber Point had created a flag for their gradelevel’s ship on display in the cafeteria, which were surrounded by the bottle displays. Meanwhile, the school was decorated with pictures showing Naccarato and the teachers’ most beloved childhood tales, to encourage the students to try new books.

At the start of PARP, Naccarato had promised the students that she would dress as a pirate if they read for 40,000 minutes or more. They reached the goal and she kept her promise, dressing up in buccaneer gear for a vocabulary hat parade planned by the Timber Point reading teachers, in which the students wore hats decorated with vocabulary word and their definitions.

Happy with Hospitality East Islip High School alumna Amanda Hernandez, a member of the Class of 2009 and a recent graduate of Mitchell College, visited the school in February to speak to students enrolled in the Culinary Arts and Hospitality Career Academy. As a senior, Hernandez decided that she wanted to pursue a career in hospitality and met with her counselor, Chris Boehler, to search for the perfect college. He encouraged her to visit Mitchell College, located in New London, Connecticut, which she chose. During the visit, she reconnected with Boehler as well as her seventh-grade family and consumer science teacher, Patricia Emmons-Fritz.

Speaking to the culinary students, Hernandez discussed careers in the world of hospitality management, explained what the profession entails and how important it is to get an internship in the field, and told the students about the different internship positions she was given at the Mohegan Sun casino during her college years. These experiences helped her to get a full-time position as the front office manager at a Hilton hotel. Ten months ago, Hernandez was hired as a special events manager for the Hyatt Regency Long Island in Hauppauge. In her new position, she handles booking for all special events such as weddings and family reunions.

Hernandez has decided to further her education and obtain a master’s degree in either occupational management or human resources. Although pursuing an advanced degree is not required, she realizes that educational advancement will help her to move further up the chain of command. “Hospitality, allows one to grow and do different things, and gives you that ‘I want to do better’ mentality,” said Guidance Director Israel Malinowitzer. “Amanda has found her passion in hospitality management and now she wants to give back and help educate other students who are thinking of pursuing a career in this field.”

Outstanding Journalists East Islip High School’s acclaimed student newspaper, The Broadcaster, won the top prize of “Most Outstanding Newspaper” at Adelphi University’s annual Quill Awards on March 9th. The paper also earned five individual awards in writing, layout and design, and illustrating, topping last year’s wins. The Quill Awards, part of Adelphi’s Press Day event,

featured more than 300 entries from 26 competing public and private high schools from Nassau, Suffolk and Queens counties. Individual winners for East Islip included Therese Mittleman, whose story “Is High School Football Safe?” won second place in the best sports story category; Katie Burke-McGoldrick and Ashley Karlin, who won second place for best

Eight great hoops shooters from East Islip’s John F. Kennedy and Ruth C. Kinney elementary schools were among more than 8,000 fourthand fifth-grade students participating in the 30th annual Town of Islip Sharpshooter Basketball Contest. Sponsored since 1993 by Islip’s Department of Parks, Recreation and Cultural Affairs, and co-sponsors Southside Hospital, the Islip Elks and the Town of Islip Housing Authority, the Sharpshooter “Just Say No to Drugs” challenge encourages local

schoolchildren to improve their basketball skills while serving as an alternative to drug and alcohol abuse. The initial school-level competitions provide each student a chance to score as many baskets as possible in one minute. JFK’s first-place winners at the school level were fourth-graders Ryan Fioresi and Emma Stein, and fifth-graders JoJo Cruz and Lauren Holmes. Runners-up were fourthgraders Mairead Cardillo and Charlie Heffernan, and fifth-graders Christian Anatra and Sara Simonetti. RFK’s first-place

winners at the school level were fourth-graders Luca Centauro and Leah Dolson, and fifth-graders Nicole Palmer and Justin Shayew. Runners-up were fourthgraders Jesse Najera and Joanna Wylie, and fifthgraders Anthony Rigogliosi and Jayouna Wilkins. In the final round of the 2016 competition, attended by Islip Town Councilman Steve Flotteron and Councilwoman Mary Kate Mullen, JFK’s Stein came in second place overall among all fourth-grade girls.

Eighth graders at Saints Cyril and Methodius School in Deer Park worked in teams to solve the question: “How do fluids exert pressure?” Student teams were given simple materials such as cotton balls, towels, tape, styrofoam donuts, sheets of plastic, popsicle sticks, cotton swabs and a tarp. They were then tasked with working together to design

and construct a carrier that would prevent an egg from breaking when dropped from a pre-determined height. The carrier needed to withstand numerous drops and students could only use the materials provided to complete their projects. Each of the teams did a fantastic job of creating unique and effective carriers for their eggs. Moreover, they had a ton

of fun and showcased their “egg-cellent” teamwork skills, all while soaking in valuable lessons on the concepts of momentum, force and energy. Four of the five teams were successful in completing repeated egg drops with no breakage and all seemed to enjoy the scientific process. Go, Science!

Ghost-Out Day Sixteen student “victims” at East Islip High School were “struck” by the Grim Reaper on March 18th during the Students Against Destructive Decisions Club’s annual campaign. The chosen students spent the remainder of Ghost-Out Day wearing

black shirts and remaining silent as a mute reminder of the young lives lost every 13 minutes due to substance abuse. “Sadly, we lose students to drugs and alcohol each year,” said teacher and SADD adviser Bridget Lopiccolo. “We need to open our eyes and act now

to save our children. Ask questions and don’t let your child drink or drug, because what seems to be a little thing is really just the beginning. We need parents, teachers and the community to get involved to help combat drugs and alcohol.”
