Life is like that. A surging battle uphill; attainment; engulfment; then a period of peace begins. The energy of the high water flow can bring nutriments, or bring destruction, but it always brings change. On the ebb tide, assessments can be made, as old ground is revealed again to the light. It is a time of peace, re-charging, quietude; A realization comes that whatever is done, is done; nothing is really controllable.

Less than one week into the new season, and I came down with a cold. Not just any cold, mind you – the epitome of chest colds, complete with congestion, sinus pressure and one of those irritating, incessant sort of tickles in the back of the throat that seem to kick into high gear right around bedtime. All winter, and not a sniffle. That, I believe, is what they call irony. So, too, is the fact that those who have been looking forward to spring with such anticipation are already bemoaning the pouring rain we’ve been experiencing over the last week or so. April showers

bring May flowers, do they not? At least that’s how the old saying goes. Of course, some flowers have already blossomed thanks to the unseasonably warm temperatures scattered throughout March and, as such, have gone back to hibernating for the duration. More irony, indeed. No worries, there are certainly plenty of flowers to be had over the next several months, along with green grass and flourishing trees and… pollen and sap and weeds and mold spores… There’s nothing like the great outdoors. Just be sure to stock up on tissues and allergy pills before you venture out. And maybe an umbrella,

for good measure. Spring is a perfect representation of life as a whole. It’s filled with much anticipation of better days, often precluded by clouds and unseasonable changes in temperature, or moods, if you will. And still, there are those who would just as soon skip right over it into summer, assuming that sunshine and surf and sand equal happiness; when really, the unknown is never guaranteed to be better than the present. And that, dear readers, is the essence of it all. Appreciate today and all the sniffles and sunbursts it may bring; stop and pick a flower, splash in a puddle, enjoy the moment. It’s the only one you’ve got.

INTERNATIONAL ISSUES - Recently, students at Bay Shore High School had the opportunity to participate in a Model United Nations Conference. The students split into groups representing different countries. They then debated issues surrounding violence against women and children in conflict zones. It was a great opportunity for students to consider global issues from different viewpoints.

Teens for Jeans With the help of generous community members, Islip High School’s Junior Chamber of Commerce Club recently collected 300 pairs of denim jeans to donate to the homeless, 20 more than the previous year. Islip joined the annual initiative in 2011 through DoSomething.org’s Teens for Jeans campaign. “The number one item requested by people living in shelters is a pair of jeans, and for the past six years, the Junior Chamber of Commerce Club has committed to helping

the homeless,” said club adviser Renee Clock. “This campaign allows teens to take a leadership role in our community by organizing and collecting jeans from family members, neighbors and local businesses. CRAFT NIGHT - The Bay Shore Dual Language Parent Faculty Association (PFA) organized a family craft night for the K-5 families in the Dual Language Program. The families came to Brook Avenue School on a Friday night to create a scrapbook page using their own family photos. The Dual Language PFA provided the families with all the necessary materials (pages, stickers and embellishments). The night was so much fun for all the families that attended. Where was the best place to be to play Bingo in March? Mary G. Clarkson School! On Friday, March 3rd, Mary G. Clarkson hosted its annual Bingo Bonanza. The Mary G. Clarkson PFA sponsors the family fun activity every year. This year over 100 parents and children eagerly participated. Many of the Mary G. Clarkson staff also enjoy this activity and the

chance to connect with the community. Pizza, salad, beverages and cupcakes added to the fun. Black History Month Celebration

The African Americans featured in Bay Shore Middle School’s 2017 celebration of Black History Month dreamed, believed and climbed to the top of their professions despite doubters and negative circumstances. Oprah Winfrey, Michael Jordan, Dr. Benjamin Carson and Misty Copeland each respectively perfected their communication, basketball, surgical and dancing skills with hard work and dedication to achieve success. The format of the assembly, titled Dream, Believe, Climb, was a creative dramatic production tied together by the poetry of Langston Hughes. On Tuesday, February 28th, over

twenty-five enthusiastic sixth, seventh and eighth grade students showcased their singing, dancing, acting, backstage, sound and lighting talent in the main auditorium during three assemblies to “Edutain” their supportive parents, peers, teachers, administrators and staff. Jaded by a missed opportunity to make his school’s basketball team, followed by being dumped by the girl he had a crush on, the main character, played by Aliasha Polsen, is given a memorable history lesson by the most unlikely of sources, a wise homeless man, played by Bobby Carroll. The cast and crew acknowledge the following staff members and middle

school alumni without whom their active participation, energy, and commitment, the success of this presentation wouldn’t be possible: Mrs. Ford-Hurt (Backstage and Choir Director), Mr. Kaplan (Prop Manager), Mrs. Thaler (Lighting Director), Ms. Thaler (Sound Director), Mrs. Yarborough (Playwright and Narrative Director), Diamond Moore, Jeremy Burd, and Dennison DeNatalie (Middle School Alumni and General Managers for dance choreography, sound, lighting and backstage. EXCEL Program Middle schoolers in Islip’s academically gifted EXCEL program earned medals in eight events in the regional competition against 38 other Science Olympiad teams from eastern Long Island. Islip finished fifth overall at the recent event, held at Candlewood Middle School in Dix Hills, allowing the team to take the final qualifying spot and advance to the state level in April. “Our team had been preparing since September, and all of the late nights and weekend work paid off,” said team adviser Julia Johnson. “Islip was

one of the few schools competing with only one team, so this was quite an accomplishment. We thank all the mentors who helped students prepare for events, including the new Stony Brook consortium of volunteer students who have been an asset to the team.” The Islip EXCEL Science Olympiad team consists of Anjalee Appalsammy, Liam Biscari, James Cottral, Devin DePass, Elizabeth DeSimone, Aaliyah Esmurria, Mackenzie Howell, Emmie Jensen, Sheyla Lopez, Noah Margolin, Jaelyn McCracken, Victoria

Pearsall, Vasu Persaud, Liam Rich and Steven Schadt. Students Travel Overseas

Forty-eight Bay Shore High School International Baccalaureate (IB) students traveled to Denmark for an international exchange visit with a Danish high school during winter recess. The students’ goal was to raise their global awareness with a ten-day immersion in Danish culture. The trip began with a threeday exploration of Copenhagen. Excursions to Amalienborg Castle to see the changing of the guard and to Helsingor to visit Kronborg Castle, fabled inspiration for the castle in Shakespeare’s Hamlet, were followed by evenings spent under the colorful lights of the city.

After the whirlwind tour of Danish culture, the students traveled to Odense to meet their host families for the second half of the trip, during which they attended a Danish high school, Sct. Knud’s Gymnasium, and collaborated on international projects. The students received a lesson in Danish language and history. As part of an initiative developed in collaboration with Sct. Knuds’ students, the IB students traveled to the Red Cross Center in Jelling to meet immigrants seeking asylum. The students gathered with refugees from Syria, Uganda and Eritrea to hear
