Rare Disease Day Recognized

n a joint awareness effort that spanned Redmen Street, East Islip High School and East Islip Middle School recognized Rare Disease Day on February 27th. The student council and Girls Leaders Club organized the day’s activities, purchasing special T-shirts for the event to benefit the NBIA Disorders Association. Numerous students celebrated in the auditorium during homeroom with Kyle Engblom, a sophomore who has a rare disease known as FAHN-FA2H.

Making A Difference The Long Island based credit union NEFCU announced today the 2015 recipients of its annual Making A Difference college scholarship program, granting a total of $12,500 to 10 local college students. The scholarship program recognizes students currently enrolled at accredited universities, colleges and community colleges who have succeeded in both their classrooms and communities. Those eligible for the scholarships must be members of NEFCU or related to a member. Since the establishment of the Making A Difference scholarship program, over 10 years ago, students have been awarded over $1,000,000 in grants. “NEFCU is proud to continue the tradition of offering a scholarship program for our members and their families. We believe that investing in education produces great returns,” said Valerie Garguilo, vice president of marketing and community relations for NEFCU. “This year’s scholarship recipients are all very bright, wellrounded individuals and we congratulate them for their academic achievements.” Through the “Making A Difference” college scholarship program, NEFCU awarded five $1,500 vouchers to undergraduate and graduate students (with a minimum GPA of 3.5), and five $1,000 vouchers

to students enrolled at an accredited community college (with at least a 3.0 GPA). In addition to meeting the academic qualifications, applicants were required to answer an essay question, as well as provide a resume and an unofficial transcript from their school. Catch Me If You Can! Islip High School’s long tradition of excellence and innovation in musical productions continued with Catch Me If You Can, a new stage musical based on the Dreamworks motion picture starring Tom Hanks and Leonardo DiCaprio. The school’s production, held March 19th, 21st and 23rd, was the first on Long Island for the musical, which opened on Broadway in 2011. The story of “Catch Me If You Can” derives from the 1980 autobiography of Frank Abagnale Jr. who ran away from home as a teenager, in search of the glamorous life and successfully posed as several different highlevel professionals. While the 2002 film version emphasized the relationship between Abagnale and pursuing FBI agent Carl Hanratty, the stage musical – which debuted in Seattle in 2009

– tells the tale as a series of musical flashbacks as Abagnale recounts his own story to Hanratty and a crowd of bystanders. Islip’s production, performed with a live orchestra comprised of both students and professional musicians, was directed by Rich Harris Jr. with choreography by Kristen DiGilio. Stage crew and art were handled by Melissa Trocchio-Cohen. “We were really excited to be the first Long Island group to produce ‘Catch Me If You Can,’” said Harris. “The high-energy show was exciting and fun, and the visuals, music and dancing kept the audience’s attention the entire evening.” The play itself wasn’t the only thing that was new, as local senior citizens were invited to an inaugural luncheon capped by a free matinee performance of the musical. The meal was served by members of the

The Islip students had worked hard since the beginning of the school year to prepare for this rigorous competition, which included both studying the complexities of meteorology, topography, entomology, physiology

and epidemiology, among other topics, and building events in which the students were required to construct devices including a wheeled vehicle and a robot. The EXCEL students competed in 17 different Science Olympiad events, winning nine and as well as the team Quiz Bowl challenge.

Hoops In The House East Islip Middle School hosted a Hoops For The House three-onthree charity basketball tournament on March 19th to support the Ronald McDonald House of Long Island. Planned by the middle school’s student

government and Girls Leaders Club, with teacher and basketball coach Chris Padgur serving as master of ceremonies, the event also served to kick off the school’s March Madness Spirit Week. A total of 91 students on 24 teams participated,

raising $220 in charity funds through dollar entrance fees and snack sales. Each member of the winning Hornets team – Brendan Cox, Matt McHugh, Adonic Nunez and Ryan Spatola – received a $10 iTunes gift card as a prize.

Making A Green Scene Dancers and bagpipers made a green scene in East Islip on March 16th, celebrating St. Patrick’s Day one day in advance. Timber Point Elementary School hosted a special set of Irishthemed performances in the school’s cafeteria, including a demonstration of Irish step dancing by four students from the district.

Keep Islip Clean’s greeting card recycling drive ended on a high note, with thousands of cards collected for three charitable organizations. The project began as a way to support St. Jude’s Ranch for Children, where cards are refashioned and sold to support their programs. The Ranch cannot accept several

brands so those were set aside for children’s recycled art projects at Long Island Women’s Empowerment Network, a shelter in Brentwood. Hundreds of brand new cards were also donated to the drive and KIC has partnered with the American Legion Rusy Bohm Post 411 to begin a letter writing campaign

for deployed units based out of Fort Totten as well as veterans at Walter Reed Hospital in Washington. “I’m grateful to all who took the time to collect and sort cards,” said KIC Executive Director Nancy Cochran. “Many children and veterans will benefit from what truly was a fun project.”

Pet Expo A Success The Long Island Pet Expo that was held from March 6 through March 8th at the Suffolk Community College in Brentwood, had a record-breaking number of attendees and pets adopted this year. The 6th annual event had well over 14,000 attendees in the 2.5-day expo. Over 70 pets adopted, the most at any of their shows in the tri-state, from local rescue groups that were at the expo. Over 600 owned dogs came with their owners to enjoy the pet friendly event over the weekend.

“We were very pleased with the number of adoptions at the expo, especially learning that a few senior dogs were adopted including a 10 year-old dog. That makes me very happy!” said Karen Garetano, co-owner of Family Pet Shows, who host the show. “Even though we have been hosting pet shows for 25 years, this 6th show at Suffolk Community College in Brentwood was a great show for us. People came from all over the island and from Queens, New York

City and Brooklyn. It was wonderful to have so many dog owners bring their dogs with them to enjoy the show too. Our vendors were very happy with the turnout and there were a lot of smiling faces, from the children to the adults and even their pets who attended.” Next year’s show is scheduled for Friday through Sunday: March 4th, 5th and 6th, 2016.
