How Does the Cancellation Process Work?
East Islip High School seniors Jillian Bradley, Robert Camlet, Kelli Karlin and Sarah Piccinini – all students in Daniel Figliozzi’s AP Art and Design class – were recently selected for the Art League of Long Island’s 14th annual Go APE Advanced Placement Student Exhibition. Go APE showcases exceptional
work by 124 art students from 36 Long Island high schools. The virtual exhibit, on view at the Art League’s website through April 2, allows viewers to “stroll the gallery” in virtual rooms. Displayed works by East Islip’s students include Bradley’s digitally manipulated photography piece “Too Much of
Myself”; Camlet’s photo manipulation piece “Lost Souls”, Karlin’s “Hidden, Out and Open,” done with graphite, colored pencil, chalk pastel and gel pen on paper; and Piccinini’s “Decomposing,” done with gouache, graphite, tracing paper and colored pencil on cardboard.
Legislator Gonzalez Partners Once Again to Raise $5,000 in Food Bank Funding
Suffolk County Legislator Sam Gonzalez recently joined Anthony Antonetti of Sunrise Toyota and Mark Soto, Director of Pronto of Long Island, Inc., to announce a $5,000 donation to Pronto’s food bank. Pronto of Long Island, Inc. has been working for more than 50 years serving the community with programs and classes for residents throughout Suffolk County. During the pandemic, Pronto of Long Island, Inc. continues to distribute tons of canned
and fresh food, clothing, shoes, baby food and medicine to help those most in need during these difficult times. “Resources and aid have been scarce due to the number of families affected by the crisis and it is comforting to know that organizations like Sunrise Toyota respond to the call in a way to improve the quality of life for our residents,” said Legislator Gonzalez. “It is an honor to be able to help the community and work alongside Legislator
Gonzalez and other local organizations such as Pronto of Long Island, Inc. to assist those in need,” said Anthony Antonetti of Sunrise Toyota. Mark Soto, Director of Pronto of Long Island, Inc., said, “Thank you to all who were apart of this great donation, we could not have done it without your support.” Legislator Sam Gonzalez continues to work hand in hand with businesses and members of the community in an effort to help those most in need.

Bethpage VITA volunteers will also educate eligible working families about the Earned Income Tax Credit (EITC) while preparing tax returns. The EITC is an anti-poverty program available to four out of five eligible Long Island households. VITA volunteers will work with taxpayers to ensure that eligible families are aware of the Earned Income Tax Credit (EITC), which could bring up to $6,557 into the hands of deserving Long Island families. Credit amounts are based on income levels, filing status and other factors. Eligible households can claim up to three years back of Earned Income Tax Credits. Bethpage has also partnered with The Health & Welfare Council of Long Island, which is an umbrella human services organization consisting of over 100 member organizations. HWCLI has teamed up with getyourrefund.org to help people file their taxes online with the help of HWCLI Staff and IRScertified volunteers from across Long Island. This year, taxpayers will be able to access their tax services from the comfort and safety of their own home by visiting https://hwcli.com/ vita, or reaching out by email or phone at taxhelp@ hwcli.com or 517/7380447. In 2020, Bethpage completed 1,341 VITA tax returns and helped secure IRS total refunds of over $1,700,000. Bethpage also helped secure $163,419 in child tax credits in 202O, and $425,256 in Earned Income Tax Credits. Since the program’s inception in 2004, over
24,266 individuals have filed their tax returns through Bethpage, resulting in $26,552,294 million returned to the Long Island community. Qualifying taxpayers planning to take advantage of Bethpage’s VITA program must bring the following materials with them for review: photo identification, social security cards for you, your spouse, and dependents, current year’s tax package if you received one, wage and earnings statement(s) Form W-2, W-2G, 1099-R from all employers, interest and dividend statements from banks (Forms 1099), a copy of last year’s Federal and State returns if available, bank routing and account numbers for tax refund direct deposit, total paid for daycare, and provider’s tax ID. Bethpage Federal Credit Union will help low-to-moderate income households prepare their tax returns by offering its Volunteer Income Tax Assistance (VITA) free tax filing services online for the first time. Now, in its 18th year, the program is open to all eligible Long Islanders, including non-Bethpage members. Now through Thursday, April 8, 2021, trained and bilingual tax preparers will be available to assist eligible taxpayers with 2020 incomes of $57,000 and below, via pre-scheduled Zoom appointments. Kindness Week Brings Unity At Islip’s Commack Road and Maud S. Sherwood elementary schools, Kindness Week brought students and staff together to enhance socialemotional learning and school unity. At Sherwood, students dressed for each day of the week, wearing Islip gear to show pride, yellow to spread kindness, tie-dye to show peace and love, and purple to promote acceptance on P.S. I Love You Day. To celebrate kindness to animals, students brought in photos of their pets and shared them on the school’s main bulletin board. Sherwood students also engaged in various kindness-oriented activities in classrooms and the library. For example, third graders in Ingrid Mileski’s class began Kindness Week with each student celebrating “Why I Love Myself.” Her students also participated in a “Compli-mat” activity
in which the class shared compliments about one another and wrote why each classmate was appreciated. “The Kindness Week building activities made everyone feel appreciated,” Mileski said. At Commack Road, an entire Kindness Month in January culminated in a Kindness Spirit Week. Commack Road’s Spirit Week activities began with a Monday in pajamas, and also included a friendship bulletin board with heartshaped words and a “Kind & Seek” challenge encouraging students to seek acts of kindness. Teachers Jill Bohnaker, Cheryl Brown, Sara Comiskey and Shannon Dignam created a Great Kindness Challenge poster contest and bulletin board. Snowballs on the board recognized acts of kindness that students caught their classmates doing over the prior month. The week
ended with students and staff wearing purple for P.S. I Love You Day and its “Together We Will Rise” theme, led by the fourthgrade class of teachers Meghan Flynn and Christine LeMaire. “We completed acts of kindness throughout the month of January as a schoolwide kindness initiative,” Commack Road Principal James Cameron said. “It was wonderful to watch the students come together to spread kindness and define success at CRES.” “Even though the week ended, our class continues to encourage everyone to show kindness and compassion always,” LeMaire said. As a result of these many kindness activities, Islip was recognized as a Kindness Certified School District by Great Kindness Challenge organizers Kids for Peace.

In the 1640s, the Halsey family began farming in the Water Mill and Bridgehampton area. Today, their family farm tradition continues as Milk Pail Fresh Market & U-Pick, which is run by both Amy and Jennifer Halsey. Both Amy and Jennifer received agricultural educations and returned to the farm after college. Amy manages the retail store, helps design gardens, custom designs planters and more. Jenn is on the farm growing the crops. She once had even been named New York Young Farmer of the Year by the New York State Farm Bureau and proudly represented her state at the national finals held in Texas. At their farm they grow apples, peaches, pumpkins, blueberries, pears and table grapes. Many value-added products are made from their produce, including fresh apple cider, apple cider donuts, apple and pumpkin pies and more. With the help of their dedicated staff, this family farm continues many traditions, while also trying new ideas to grow the business! Running a farm is no easy task, but Amy and Jennifer make it seem so! Visit their farm for a great experience on the East End.
Rhonda Klch is the Executive Director and Founder of Equity First, which was formed in 2004. This organization provides financial education, literacy and best practices to the community at low or no cost. Financial decisions are based on emotional scenarios, often times leading to clients making poor choices and decisions in regards to their future. Equity First creates and implements an approved client plan until the desired result is achieved. Their programs include money management, budget reviews, financial well check, credit restoration, debt settlement, bankruptcy consulting, loss mitigation services and more. Each service is paired with ongoing consultations to ensure a thorough understanding of timelines, expectations and benchmarks. Rhonda and her team are making an incredible impact in the Long Island community. In addition to financially assisting others, during the pandemic they have also given locals in need food, gift cards, personal hygiene products and more.
Lisa Gatti is the Founder and CEO of Pal-O-Mine Equestrian and the mother of her 13 year old daughter, who is the pride and joy of her life. Her passion for horses and teaching began at a very young age. In college, she was the captain of the equestrian team and she graduated with a dual degree in Elementary and Special Education. She has supplemented her education throughout the years by taking other educational programs. In 1996 and 2000, Lisa was named as US Team Leader for the US Equestrian Paralympic Team in Atlanta, Georgia and Sydney, Australia. From 2008-2013 Lisa served as Chairman of the Board of Directors of EAGALA, the global standard for equine assisted psychotherapy and personal development. In 2015, Lisa was named to the Board of Autism Communities. Most recently in 2019, she was appointed to the Town of Islip Disability Advisory Committee to help local government identify the most crucial issues facing our special needs population. She was honored with the 2020 Woman of Distinction and Distinguished Service Award from The Town of Islip, is a current finalist for the Imagine Awards for the Leadership Excellence Category and just received the 2021 Circle Of Excellence Award from the Long Island Business News. Throughout the pandemic, she still sees the greatness around her everyday and believes that when we see it in others, we know it, and when we trust its presence in ourselves, we embody it.
Eileen Scanlon has been a NYS Licensed Cosmetologist for 30 years. She has worked with Corporate America, Non Profits, Academia and local grass-roots organizations. Ten years ago, she started Scanlon’s Traveling Salon. T h e Twilight Wish Foundation is a 501(c) (3) non-profit organization whose mission is to honor and enrich the lives of seniors through intergenerational Twilight Wish celebrations. Since the organization’s founding in 2003, their goal has been to make the world a nicer place to age, one Twilight Wish at a time. When a Twilight Wish is granted, a senior is recognized for all that they have done throughout their lives and is shown that they are appreciated and valued. Did you know that senior citizens are the fastest growing population in the world? The number of Americans 65 and older is projected to more than double to over 98 million by 2060. To date, the Twilight Wish Foundation has granted over 3,700 wishes throughout our country! These wishes have ranged from simple needs wishes, such as shaving razors for nursing home veterans, to living life to the fullest wishes, such as going cross country in a tractor trailer truck. Recently, many Long Island residents had their wishes come true. Below is a story about Michael, a Plainview resident. Michael wished for a record player and vinyl records. The Twilight Wish Foundation happily granted his wish, and as far as the records go, he received two of his favorites! Michael had worked in insurance and took an early train into the city every morning, returning home late at night. By the time he retired, he was ready for senior living accommodations. However, retirement did not stop his desire to volunteer. Prepandemic he worked closely to help people who were lower functioning/ had dementia. During the pandemic,
he was still the first person to ask others what they needed and if he could be of help in any way. He truly gives so much without thinking of taking. Thank you for being you, Michael! You can qualify for a Twilight Wish if you are at least 65 years old, are a legal U.S. citizen, demonstrate financial need, provide a history of giving back to others and possess the cognitive, emotional and physical ability to experience the wish. Please note, when going to grant a wish, this foundation takes all the necessary safety precautions. If you are interested in volunteering with their Long Island Chapter, you can fill out the Chapter Volunteer Application at www.twilightwish.org/volunteeropportunities/ and someone will get in contact with you regarding how you can do so. Warrior Ranch Foundation Benefitting Veterans Following an exclusive screening of “One Soldier, One Horse,” the first story of a soldier to go through the Warrior Ranch Foundation program at Stony Brook University, Legislator Steven J. Flotteron was fortunate to be able to get up close with one of the horses assisted by Trainer Tony Simonetti. The Foundation was established as a not-forprofit 501 © organization in 2016. It was established
in the hearts and minds of its founder Eileen Shanahan long before that. Their passion for horses, love of country, and appreciation of our nation’s veterans were combined to bring forth this unique organization designed to help veterans and rescue horses. In the past, Warrior Ranch Foundation has helped more than 20 Veterans/First Responders and saved two equine
lives through interaction, enrichment and family day programs with the horses. Services are provided at no cost to Veterans, first responders and their families. L.I. Hispanic Bar Association Reaches Out to Adelante & Pronto The Long Island Hispanic Bar Association (LIHBA), under the leadership of its new president, attorney Liza Milgrim, has launched an educational outreach initiative in partnership with Adelante of Suffolk County and Pronto of Long Island, both nonprofit organizations that serve the predominantly Hispanic and Latino communities of Bay Shore and Brentwood. The LIHBA has been offering a series of free, educational workshops called “Know Your Rights,” which are accessible via
Facebook Live and on the association’s website. Now by working in partnership with these two non-profits, Milgrim says she is hopeful that the useful information provided by the LIHBA will reach even more people who need it. In addition to the virtual workshops, the LIHBA will be providing internships, career advice and mentoring to those interested in a future career in law. “Working closely with the LIHBA will open up extraordinary opportunities for our
youth, and give them access to role models who can inspire them and help them navigate a career in law,” said Maidaya Maldonado, Operation Director for Adelante. “Pronto and Adelante are two organizations that reach thousands of people in need of food, clothing and services,” Milgrim said. “By working together, I know that the LIHBA can provide some very useful information to their clientele. We are thrilled to be able to work with them on this new initiative and I am confident that it will be
a wonderful collaboration.” Pronto Executive Director Marc Soto said, “Knowledge is power and anything we can do to empower our clientele is a good thing. The LIHBA volunteers are a wonderful resource. These workshops provide a safe and secure environment in which people can ask their legal questions.” The first “Know Your Rights” presentation aired in December 2020. The workshop called “Know Your Rights in Special Education Law” covered how to request special
education services for your child.
