The opioid epidemic has highlighted that all ages, socio-economic backgrounds, and all communities can be profoundly vulnerable to addiction. YES Community Counseling Center has been providing both addiction treatment and prevention services for the past three decades with the understanding that the needs of each individual is uniquely different and therefore, treatment must also be individualized and utilize a variety of approaches.

YES Community Counseling Center’s addiction treatment services are comprehensive and approaches are based upon the developmental stage and readiness of each individual. Under the supervision of the agency’s Medical Director, specializes in evidence based services which are available for adolescents, young adults, adults and family members, including: •Adolescent Family Program (AFP) •Young Adult groups •Impaired driver evaluations and treatment •Moral Reconation Therapy for those who are legally involved (MRT) •Recovery groups •Trauma focused therapies •Parent and signiﬁcant other support groups •Educational groups

It is also understood that most often, family members are deeply affected by addiction and require support and well as an understanding the complexities of the disease and how to support a loved one through their recovery. Early education about addiction is critical along with early interventions that build individual, family and community protective factors to reduce the likelihood of young people resorting to substances to cope with life’s challenges. In light of marijuana legalization, it is so important that parents learn the detrimental effects of all substances on the developing brain. In addition to prevention services within the local schools and community, YES CCC offers early intervention

Home Voyage and the Protein Panda, Islip High School’s Virtual Enterprise teams, both participated in a virtual trade show last month. Guided by instructors Renee DeCrescenzo Clock and Danielle McMullan, each firm has entered 11 different competitions this year, at both the regional (against more than 3,000 participating firms in the Northeast, Long Island, and New York City) and national (against more than 5,000 firms throughout the United States) level. Since they face different firms at each

competition, doing so has allowed both Islip firms to keep advancing in the overall Top 50 VE Firms standings. Virtual Enterprise is a simulated course that allows aspiring entrepreneurs to create their own corporation and experience how an actual business works. Students design and price products, develop company policies, organize financial statements, and oversee the operation of all aspects of a corporation. Firms from different schools around the world are able to interact and buy

products from one another using the virtual currency gained through the sale of their products. Each competition involves departments within the firm working together to create a written document that is presented with a virtual oral presentation. Student “employees” within each firm work hard to meet deadlines and perfect their submissions while continuing to operate the daily functions and requirements of their firms.

East Islip’s National Honor Society Holds Second Successful Sports Equipment Drive

East Islip High School’s National Honor Society recently completed its second successful sports equipment drive. More than 60 bags and over 150 different articles of gently used and new sports equipment, ranging from baseballs to hockey sticks, were donated to Strength Heals, an Islip nonprofit that raises awareness for children who grow up in abusive situations. The organization helps abused

children by providing an outlet through sports and an opportunity for them to build healthy relationships with coaches and mentors. East Islip’s NHS leadership project began last year with alumnus Ryan Thompson, and was continued this year by members Dylan Hernandez, Kevin Smith and Sean Smith. “We were extremely pleased with the turnout,” Hernandez said. “We

would like to thank all who donated and were involved with the drive.” “This has been an incredibly inspiring drive,” said NSH adviser Nicole Ingram. “I love that our members decided to make this an annual collection. The amount of donations this year was incredibly impressive and the fact that it will directly impact victims of abuse makes all of us at NHS extremely proud.”

LEGISLATOR FLOTTERON HONORS THE 100TH EAGLE SCOUT WITH TROOP 205 - Legislator Steven J. Flotteron recognized the 100th Eagle Scout with Troop 205, Robert Martin Camlet, of East Islip in a ceremony held at Timber Point Elementary School. Robert earned his Eagle Scout ranking by completing his service project of planning, constructing and replanting the 9/11 Memorial along with the East Garden in front of the John F. Kennedy Elementary School in East Islip. He is a graduate of East Islip High School, where he held high honors throughout all four years. He is currently a freshmen in the Honors Program at Suffolk County Community College, completing his core requirements and next year will be applying to four-year colleges to complete his bachelor’s degree.

Pal-O-Mine Equestrian Now Offering Barnyard Buddies Program For Children Ages 2-5 Years

Pal-O-Mine Equestrian, Inc. , a private, not for profit organization providing a comprehensive therapeutic equine program using horses to facilitate growth, learning and healing for children and adults with disabilities, has launched a new program for children ages 2-5 years. The Barnyard Buddies Program is a hands-on learning program which involves Pal-O-Mine’s therapy animals. It is facilitated by experienced and licensed educational and healthcare professionals who will use an experiential approach to learning. Its unique, age-appropriate curriculum includes social-emotional, physical, cognitive, and imaginative concepts and activities such as expressive art projects. Additionally, it incorporates focused exposure to pre-reading/ reading, mathematics, and

problem-solving skills. Children enjoy learning in Pal-O-Mine’s naturalistic learning environment full of positive support. Children of all levels of abilities are welcome. The Barnyard Buddies program consists of four sessions held once a week on Tuesday mornings at Pal-O-Mine Equestrian, 829 Old Nichols Road, Islandia, NY. Session dates are April 26th, May 3rd, May 10th and May 17th. Each session is 90-minutes long and begins at 9:30 AM and ends at 11:00 AM. Sessions are limited to a maximum of ten children. One parent or caregiver must accompany each child. The fee for the fourweek program is $150 per child and must be paid in full prior to the first session. Cash, checks and credit cards are accepted and there is a 3.25% processing fee on credit card transactions. To learn more or enroll your child

Four Student-Artists Chosen For SCALA Showcase

East Islip High School student-artists Lauren Holmes, Dom Nickson, Nick Winegard and Brianna Zinkiewicz were recently chosen for display at the 2022 Suffolk County Art Leaders Association’s All County and Senior Scholarship Art Showcase, with both Holmes and Nickson taking SCALA’s Best in Show awards. Nickson, a student in Elizabeth Gibbons’ sculpture class, won first place in the multimedia art category for his sculpture, while Holmes, a student in Daniel Figliozzi’s Advanced Placement art class as well as Heather Toomey’s digital imaging and design course, earned the top spot in the digital media category. Zinkiewicz, a student in Figliozzi’s AP art class, represented East Islip as the Senior Scholarship artist, with three of her works displayed. Winegard, who studies photography with Amarilis Singh, exhibited his darkroom prints. “I really feel honored to be a part of the show,” Nickson said. “It was a wonderful opportunity, and great seeing everyone else’s artwork.” “I am so thrilled that Dom won the Best in Show award,” Gibbons said. “He continues to impress me with his creative solutions, his artistic initiative and skill level. Dom brings a level of sophistication to the classroom environment that elevates not only his artwork, but his classmates as well.” “I was so surprised that my piece was entered and even more honored that it was chosen for the All County award,” Holmes said. “I am very passionate about digital art and design and am planning to pursue it in my future career.” “I am so proud of all of the student-artists exhibiting at SCALA this year,” Toomey said. “The students and art teachers

East Islip Middle School NJHS Donates Blankets For Homeless Families

East Islip Middle School’s National Junior Honor Society recently partnered with Blankets of Hope, a nonprofit organization whose mission is to provide blankets to homeless families. BOH provided 219 blankets to the NJHS, who then invited staff and students to help by writing letters of kindness to the

families. Guided by NJHS adviser Betty Muller, the letters were assembled along with the blankets and donated to two Long Island organizations that help homeless families, 30 to Mercy Haven in Islip Terrace and189 blankets to Long Island Coalition for the Homeless. In addition, BOH asked the school to continue this

act of kindness within the community and invited the students to join their 21day Kindness Challenge. “The NJHS appreciates all the help within the school community to support families in need, Muller said. “It is amazing what a community can achieve when we all work together.”

In Suffolk County, we have three species of ticks to be careful of, namely: the Blacklegged Tick, the Lone Star Tick and the American Dog Tick. Suffolk County Legislator Steven Flotteron collaborated with Catholic Health Good Samaritan Hospital and The Islip Arts Council in bringing local Veteran organizations together for an art exhibit and informational expo followed by a viewing of the acclaimed documentary Walk With Frank to increase awareness of mental health and our Veterans in the community. The event brought many community members and Veterans together, making the First Annual Veterans Awareness Project an overwhelmingly success.

So many Veterans face such issues as PTSD, mental illness, homelessness and ongoing recovery. The Veterans Awareness Project was possible with the help of sponsors such as, Catholic Health Good Samaritan Hospital, Islip Arts Council, Kerzner Contracting Corp., Bay Shore Lions, Francis Beringer, Legislators Cilmi and Flotteron and Ken Nevor. The art exhibit featured local Veteran artists and the documentary welcomed home Bay Shore native and Veteran Frank Romeo. Legislator Flotteron

presented a check from funds raised through our Veterans Awareness Project. The New York State Office of Parks, Recreation and Historic Preservation is pleased to announce that “Fly Casting Clinics” and instructional courses will be offered at two Long Island State Parks. The Long Island Chapter of Trout Unlimited will be conducting two clinics on “Basic Fly Casting”, one on Saturday, April 2nd at Connetquot River State Park Preserve in Oakdale and one on Saturday, April 9th at Caleb Smith State Park Preserve in Smithtown. The clinics will be held rain or shine, from 10:00AM – 1:00PM, and are open to everyone 16 years and older. If you own fly fishing equipment, bring it with you, but it is not required to attend. Clinic topics will include basic casting instructions, equipment

needs and selection, conservation, and safety techniques. Reservations are required and accepted beginning two weeks prior to each clinic. There is no registration fee, however, there will be an $8.00 vehicle use fee in effect. The Long Island State Park Region also operates Nissequogue River Fly Fishing School at Caleb Smith State Park Preserve. The school offers a series of ongoing instructional classes for groups and individuals in basic to advance freshwater and saltwater fly fishing and casting techniques, stream entomology, and still water (pond) techniques. kind, the Commack Road Lighthouse Committee sponsored a schoolwide activity highlighting acts of kindness on campus. Third grade students in co-teachers Shannon Dignam’s and Meghan Flynn’s class were each given a construction paper light bulb and instructed to write about “When I was

Kind” or “I saw someone doing something kind.” After the lightbulbs were colored, they were hung on the class’s bulletin board to resemble strings of lights. As peers passed the Light Up the World with Kindness bulletin board, they were able to read about all kind acts by fellow students.
