Capturing the Championship

slip High School’s varsity girls basketball team captured their first-ever Class A and Small School county championships with thrilling come-from-behind February playoff victories over Mattituck and Commack. The Lady Bucs went 12-0 during the League V regular season to win their first league title since 1985. After beating Shoreham-Wading River, 61-40, on February 13th in the opening round of the playoffs, they defeated Hampton Bays, 73-56.

Postscript I want to begin by expressing my sincere appreciation to all those readers who took the time to reach out in the last week to express condolences on the passing of my “Pal,” to relate to the sense of loss, to the closeness felt… but, mostly, to comment on how fortunate I was to share such a special bond with my grandfather and develop so many wonderful memories through the years. It is with that sentiment that I choose to pick up this week’s column. Rather than dwell in the sadness, I choose to reflect with a smile – on the love, the laughter, the photo albums, the video footage, the small possessions that embody much larger stories –

all the components that make pile of “unattributed” wisdom up a life well-lived. we all love to call upon from time to time. No matter the Family is precious. We source, the message is clear. know this, of course; but And so, we smile. We reflect. I think we tend to forget just how meaningful those We shed a happy tear here and connections are from time to there. But, most importantly, time. Only when called upon we remember. Appetizer Award Continued From 3 winning a best appetizer award at the state’s premier high school competition focused on restaurant management and culinary arts. The ProStart Invitational is composed of two distinct competitions – management and culinary – that showcase the most important skills needed on both sides of the restaurant and food service industry. For each respective competition, students must impress judges from leading industry corporations and colleges with the skills they have developed through their ProStart classes. The management teams develop a proposal for the next promising restaurant concept and

present it to a panel of industry judges. Next, their problem solving skills are tested as they quickly solve daily challenges faced by managers. The culinary competition highlights each team’s creative abilities through the preparation of a threecourse meal in 60 minutes, using only two butane burners and without access to running water or electricity. There is no room for error as they are evaluated on taste, skill, teamwork, safety and sanitation. The East Islip culinary team produced a threecourse meal consisting of an appetizer of panseared sea scallops and beet salad with vinaigrette dressing;

an entree of pan-fried halibut over asparagus and couscous; and a dessert of apple-filled crepes topped with caramel sauce. The judges declared the sea scallop salad as the best appetizer in the competition.

Throughout February and March, Islip Middle School seventh-grade English teacher Christine Sheridan and ENL teacher Kaitlin Rooney have hosted a Writers’ Cafe, an enrichment activity allowing students to express their creativity through poetry writing. Every Wednesdays after school, participants gather in Sheridan’s classroom to create original poems associated with cherished winter memories. The seventhgraders are encouraged to incorporate sensory

imagery and figurative language into their pieces. In order to create an atmosphere reminiscent of an authentic cafe, hot chocolate is served in coffee cups donated from Islip’s local Starbucks. Rooney also bakes decadent treats for each session. As background music gently plays, students sip their hot chocolate, nibble on delicious snacks and put their poetic skills to use. To showcase student work, the two educators plan to publish all final pieces in a winter-themed anthology. Within the cafe’s setting,

creativity knows no bounds, and imaginations soar. The cozy and relaxing environment promotes student interaction and engagement as they happily chat with their peers and share personal experiences related to their poems. Every student has a unique voice and perspective that is warmly welcomed. One seventh-grader, Kevin Fuentes, said “Writers’ Cafe is so much fun.” Fellow student Alex Lennon added, “I really like writing poetry and talking with my friends.”

After absorbing February’s Book of the Month, Ellen Levine’s “Henry’s Freedom Box: A True Story from the Underground Railroad”, which focused on

the character trait of perseverance, each class at East Islip’s John F. Kennedy Elementary School selected a “Star of the Month” student who exemplified that trait.

“These students possess the quality that allows them to persevere and continue trying, even though the task is difficult,” said Principal Aileen O’Rourke.

Four East Islip High School students – sophomore Kathryn Bingham and seniors Elaina Brzostek, Rae Peacock and Jamie Zieman – were recognized for their artistic talents, with six of their works selected by the Suffolk County Art Leaders Association for display at this year’s All-County SCALA/BACCA Art Show Exhibition. The annual exhibition was open to high school students in grades 9-12, with a scholarship portion of the show aimed at seniors who are entering a collegiate art program in the fall. The show was presented at Old Town Hall in Babylon from January 21st through February 9th, including an artists’ reception at Old Town Hall on February 6th. Bingham was chosen for her work in mixed media and fashion illustration. “For this project, students were asked to create a

costume design,” said fashion teacher Toniann Mannino. “Kathryn’s fashion illustration skills were showcased in this piece beautifully. Her original illustration and combination of materials came together for an overall impressive piece. I am very proud of her.” “This was my first piece in a show and it meant a lot to me to have the honor of being exhibited,” said Zieman, who worked in digital photography. “My parents inspire me to do more and push myself, and they are the reason my hard work and inspiration has paid off.” “As an AP 2D design student, Jamie has spent the past three years perfecting her photography and Photoshop manipulation skills in a variety of art courses offered here at the high school,” said teacher Heather Toomey. “Her dedication is evident in her work.”

Brzostek, a student of drawing teacher Daniel Figliozzi, was selected for her works in pen and ink, colored pencil and chalk pastel. “Being involved in the SCALA show was a great opportunity to see how other high school artists work,” she said. “I am very honored to have been nominated for the senior scholarship.” Peacock’s pieces were in the field of electronic illustration and computer graphics. “This is my second year having Rae in electronic illustration,” said teacher Erin Jacob. “She continues to explore new digital techniques, seeks out fresh and innovative approaches and pushes herself outside of her comfort zone. The energy in Rae’s ‘Red Bowtie’ portrait is vibrant and electric, and I am very proud of all of her hard work.”

Constant Mentoring East Islip High School’s Mentor Me program, sponsored by the East Islip SchoolBusiness Partnership, has continued to offer students a year-round opportunity to explore career opportunities in a wide variety of fields such as teaching, architecture, police, veterinary medicine, broadcasting, journalism, law, nursing, radiology, human resources, pathology, computer networking, marketing, international business, marine biology and law enforcement. More than 80 juniors and seniors have taken advantage of the program this year, shadowing professionals in different fields they met while attending two events: the Catch-a-Career Breakfast and Meet My Mentor Breakfast. Shadow experiences – in which students “shadowed” selected mentors in desire career fields – began in January and will run

through March. At Catch-a-Career, held in November at the Irish Coffee Pub, the students socialized with 44 table facilitators representing more than 30 career fields. Signature Bank Senior Vice President Andrew Corrado served as the keynote speaker. “This year was the most diverse selection of career areas we had ever had at the Catch-a-Career event,” said teacher and SchoolBusiness Partnership coordinator Paul McHugh. The program’s next event, Meet My Mentor, took place at the high school’s library in December. A total of 75 students met with 10 business professionals to discuss how to make the most of the mentoring program and prepare for a day of shadowing. “This meeting was about learning skills needed to help our students have an edge,” said teacher Bridget Lopiccolo, the coordinator of the Mentor

Me program. “The room was filled with excitement and anticipation as students were able to ask valuable questions from our mentors, such as how to turn a one-day shadow experience into an internship, part-time job or even a full-time job after their graduation from high school or college.” The winter shadowing sessions saw Mentor Me accept a record number of applicants for the program, allowing students to visit various workplaces across Long Island throughout January and February. “This program takes many hours to put together and organize, but it is the students and the mentors that make this program so tremendous,” said Lopiccolo. “It is truly a wonderful thing to watch the students show up to the hands-on shadow experience and be able to see themselves in that career one day.”

Creating with CAD modeling with a focus on construction- and architecture-specific applications. They learn how to use industryleading CAD software programs such as AutoCAD 2014 to model construction projects. Students that successfully complete the CAD course have the option of earning three college credits

Islip in the visual arts category of this year’s PTA Reflections arts contest. Orgera’s project, titled “Mom,” earned him a New York State Reflections Award of Excellence. Work by Islip High School science teacher and Keep Islip Clean club adviser Wayne Mennecke was recently included in “Fracture: Essays, Poems, and Stories on Fracking in America,” published by Ice Cube Press on February 14th. “Fracture” is the first

collection of literature from established and emerging authors and activists that focuses on the environmental impact that fracking has on communities and habitats across America. Last year, the editors at Ice Cube Press put out a call for literary works that address the consequences of oil shale fracking on the land, water and air, asking, “Can a poem stop a pipeline?” Mennecke answered that request by contributing four poems to the anthology. Mennecke is a summer volunteer for the Marmarth Research Foundation, a group of scientists, teachers and

volunteers who dig for dinosaurs in North Dakota and Montana. He has conducted research with paleontologists and fellow teachers for the past seven years, and many of his poems come from the pages of the research journal he keeps while digging for fossils, speaking with local ranchers and observing the changes the energy industry has brought to the Northern Plains. The book aims to use literature to help inform Americans about the environmental and personal consequences of unregulated drilling.

Teens for Jeans The Islip High School Junior Chamber of Commerce Club completed another successful Teens for Jeans campaign this year, collecting a total of 295 pairs for charity. This long-running annual campaign, initially started via DoSomething. org, is designed so teens can help their peers, take leadership roles in the community and learn about having compassion for others. The gently used or new jeans are collected, laundered and distributed

to those in need. Once again, the Town of Islip Youth Bureau organized the pick-up and distribution of the club’s jean collection, which was augmented by donations from new dropoff locations at Suffolk County Legislator Tom Cilmi’s office, Kennedy L.I. Realty and the Islip American Legion Post 411. The school’s new Business Academy, the Islip Chamber of Commerce and other local organizations and community members also

helped with the campaign, which the Youth Bureau has expanded during the past few years to include neighboring school districts and clubs within the township of Islip. This year’s crop of collected jeans were distributed by the Youth Bureau to River of Life Outreach in Bay Shore, according to teacher Renee Clock, the adviser of the Junior Chamber of Commerce Club.

Ohmiller (who will attend Stony Brook this fall on a lacrosse scholarship) needed just seven points to reach the 1,000-point scoring milestone for her four-year career, which she attained in the first quarter, earning her a game ball presented by Section XI basketball coordinator Kevin O’Reilly. The Lady Bucs held a one-point advantage at halftime, but Commack came back to defeat Islip, 51-44. The team’s last game was the Long Island championship at St. Joseph’s College, where they fought Nassau Class A champ Floral Park for a trip to the state championships. It was a tight game throughout, and the Lady Bucs cut the deficit to three points with less than three minutes

remaining, but in the end, Islip lost, 62-53. Ohmiller and fellow standout Sanne van Poelgeest were named to the All-Tournament team, an award given to only seven players. At the All-County awards banquet on March 9th, all five of Islip’s starters – DeCaprio, Julia Hande, Meg Oberg, Ohlmiller and van Poelgeest – were recognized as All-League athletes. Oberg, Ohlmiller and van Poelgeest were also named to the All-County team, and Hande was named All-Conference. Cheyenne Coughlin and DeCaprio were named Academic AllCounty, and van Poelgeest was named League V MVP. Islip High School’s varsity girls basketball team captured their first-ever Class A and Small School county championships with thrilling come-frombehind February playoff victories over Mattituck and Commack. The Lady Bucs went 12-0 during the League V regular season to win their first league title since 1985. After beating Shoreham-Wading River, 61-40, on February 13th in the opening round of the playoffs, they defeated Hampton Bays, 73-56, on February 16th in the second round. In the third meeting of the year for the two teams, Islip met defending county champions Harborfields for the Class A championship on February 19th at the Selden campus of Suffolk County Community College. By halftime, Islip was trailing by eight points, but came back out and put Harborfields away for good by a score of 52-41. In the next game, Islip took on Mattituck for the Suffolk County Small School championship game, held February 24th at SCCC’s Brentwood campus. The Lady Bucs were again down at halftime, this time

HIGHEST HONOR - Matthew Sharrock of Islip Terrace recently attained the rank of Eagle, boy scouting’s highest honor. For his Eagle Project, Matthew spearheaded a construction project to build roofs on the Junior/Senior dugouts at the Central Islip Little League Fields on Eastview Drive. The project was completed in cooperation with his fellow members from Troop #327 of Islip Terrace and Scoutmaster David Maziarz.

East Islip Middle School held its ninth annual Breakfast of Champions on March 8th, recognizing 24 sixth-graders and 21 seventh-graders who have demonstrated the “Six Pillars of Character” during the 2015-2016 school year. Each honoree was selected by a team or department at the middle school. The ceremony began with greetings from Principal Mark Bernard. The school’s assistant principals, Christian Seifert and Jason Stanton, then presented the honorees with certificates and lanyards commemorating

their great achievement, followed by a celebratory breakfast with the students, their families and staff members.
