VALENTINES FOR VETS - Bay Shore School students sent very special Valentine’s Day cards this year. Students across the District created cards for veterans and service members as part of Assemblyman Saladino’s Valentine’s for Veterans program. The cards were given to those who have served our country as a way to say thank you.

FUNDRAISING DINNER - On Friday, January 27th, the Special Education Parent Teacher Association (SEPTA) hosted its 6th Annual Shooting for the Stars fundraising dinner at Captain Bill’s. Once again, hundreds packed the room to support the organization’s work and dance the night away! This year’s honorees were Raymond and Jeanne Samson of Challenger Athletics, Inc.

The fourth grade students of Gardiner Manor School enjoyed an exhibition of birds of prey that were native to Long Island. Jim Jones, a volunteer with the Wildlife Hospital and Education Center, located in Locust Valley, came to the school to conduct a series of workshops with the students. In the demonstrations Mr. Jones explained the “3 R’s” of the organization’s mission. The students learned that the organization’s goals were to rescue, rehabilitate and release sick, injured or orphaned wild animals back into their proper habitats. The students were excited to see living examples of two species of owls, a kestrel and a red-tail hawk. Students learned that those animals too badly damaged to be released back into the wild were kept on and used to educate members of the public about these magnificent creatures. Most of the students had never seen any of these birds up close, despite the fact that, as Mr. Jones explained, they live all over Long Island. In addition, students learned that these birds consumed mice and rats, which otherwise would damage crops grown by local farmers. Shabrece Fuller, a student in Mrs. Schiffman’s class remarked on how exciting it was to see the birds, especially the red-tailed hawk. “I’ve never seen one so close,” Shabrece explained. “Only high up in the sky.” Joshua Penagos, a student in Mrs. Morrison’s class noted the raptors’

On April 5th, countless numbers of Long Islanders will take a step towards being Healthy For Good and walk to commemorate the American Heart Association’s National Walking Day. The Healthy For Good movement is designed to inspire all Americans to live healthier lives and create lasting change. It focuses on the simple idea that making small changes today can create a difference for generations to come. So join the movement and move more with us throughout the month of April! Studies have suggested that moderate physical activity has many proven benefits for overall health, such as lowering blood pressure, increasing HDL, or “good”, cholesterol and controlling weight. All these changes help to reduce the risk of cardiovascular disease and stroke, the nation’s No. 1 and No. 5 killers. The American Heart Association will kick off the month-long campaign on National Walking Day, April 5th, to encourage people to move more by increasing their physical activity. The campaign is broken down into weekly themes. Week one focuses on walking and the basic tools you need to get started. Walking is one of the safest, least expensive, and most sustainable forms of exercise. Weeks two and three focus on recreational sports and outdoor activities the whole family can do together, and week four focuses on mindful movement and reducing stress by doing activities such as yoga, Pilates and tai chi. The American Heart Association recommends that adults participate in at least 150 minutes of

New Commissioner Keep Islip Clean is pleased to announce that Gene Murphy has accepted the volunteer position of KIC Commissioner for Code Compliance. This designation was created for Gene because of the vast knowledge

opportunity to be a part of this grassroots effort to help support local veterans across Long Island.” The carpentry students built the crates with plywood and 2 x 4s donated by Kleet Lumber Co., Inc. of Huntington. “It was a learning experience for the students,” said Carpentry Teacher Joe Postiglione. Boots on the Ground provided specs for the crates and the students applied the knowledge and skills they were learning to build the crates. “We wanted to make good use of all the donated materials so precision, patience, and collaboration was key,” said Postiglione. The carpentry students worked in teams of two. In all, they built 10 donation

crates. The 10 crates were then transported across the Islip campus to Milliken Technical Center where they were sprayed with clear coat by students in the Auto Body and After Market Accessories Program. Teacher Brian LaBarba said, “Spraying clear coat on wooden boxes is not something auto body students typically do but given the opportunity to utilize the skills they are learning for Boots on the Ground, they immediately volunteered to spray coat and stencil the crates.” Volunteers from Boots on the Ground distributed the crates across Long Island and collected food and other sundry items for Veterans and their families.

“We are thrilled that Gene is sharing his experience with us now that he’s retired. He’s a wonderful resource who will help KIC achieve its goal of keeping our community clean and beautiful,” said Executive Director Nancy Cochran.

Fourth-graders’ research skills were showcased at annual science fairs by two East Islip schools, John F. Kennedy Elementary School and Ruth C. Kinney Elementary School, both held on March 2nd in front of proud families, friends and school staff. The projects presented were based on experiments the students conducted using the scientific method, including FIRE DEPT VISIT - Fireman Russo from the Bay Shore Fire Department recently determining a question, visited Mrs. Olsen and Mrs. Carino’s class at South Country School to share information developing a hypothesis, about what to do in case of an emergency. He taught the students about the equipment indicating the procedures that were followed, listing used by fire fighters and how to create a safe place in your home.

Which Color LED Light Is Brightest?”), while Frank Muscarello finished third (“Paw Preference”). Students throughout the Islip School District participate in visual arts activities with Islip’s fine and performing arts staff, culminating in an annual art show. Whether with colored pencils or paints, on paper or canvas, students are given the opportunity to both practice their artistic skills and create works of art worthy of special recognition. This year, Islip recognized 80 artists who created works that displayed both technical ability and artistic growth. The artists ranged in age from 6 to 18 years of age,

and worked in media ranging from pencil drawings to darkroom photography. Artists and their families came to participate in a recent recognition ceremony, where they could view their works and the works of others on display. “The assembled works highlighted not only artistic abilities but also valuable crosscurricular skills, including perseverance and problem solving,” said Vincent Green, Islip’s director of fine and performing arts. “The commitment these students make to their art will serve them beyond the

Scaling Up art classroom and into any career they choose.” Kyle Renwick, who studies photography with teacher Lorraine Knoblauch, was on hand to discuss his intimate portrait work as well as his quest for the right athletic photograph, noting that some of his pieces took more than a year to get right and that he often struggled to balance his desire for the perfect photo against the athlete’s need to focus. “I’m trying to get the right picture without being a distraction to them during the game,” said Renwick.

East Islip High School students in Hal Kench’s advanced computer-aided design course recently completed their major unit project, a scale model home. Seniors Hunter Engrassia and Joseph Mignone and junior Kiernan Stanton had completed the collegelevel introduction to CAD during the 2015-2016 school year, and decided to continue on with the subject at an advanced level. The three students

started with a complex set of blueprints, and though diligent teamwork, complex math equations and precise measurements, brought the house to life. “I’m really proud of this group,” said Kench. “They’ve come up through the CAD ranks together, and really did a fantastic job on this project.” Like all other programs in East Islip’s technology department, advanced CAD is offered at the college level, and students who successfully complete

the rigorous syllabus can earn three college credits from Suffolk County Community College. “Our partnership with SCCC in the Excelsior program is a great way for our students to get a feel for college-level courses, and earn transferable credit at a fraction of the cost,” said Kench. Engrassia is taking her engineering aspirations a step further by shadowing a local architect as part of the school’s Mentor Me program.

Life, as we know it, doesn’t always go according to plan. Sometimes, the most carefully orchestrated days can go awry in the blink of an eye, through no fault of our own. How we react, and recover – or don’t, as the case may be – says a lot about our character, or lack thereof. The fact is, more days than not will fall into this category. Seldom do schedules run like clockwork; rare are there uninterrupted intervals of peace and tranquility. Life doesn’t stop for anyone, and you had best hang on for the ride. Speaking of rides, and unexpected detours if you will, I recently took my car – my six-year old “Celeste” – for her annual checkup at the dealership. Over three hours, and nearly $500, later, I left with new rear brakes, an oil change, assorted minor

maintenance and a clean bill of health – for now. One day later, a co-worker said, “Didn’t you just get your car serviced?” Um…yeah? “Brake light is out.” And here I was so excited to no longer have a monthly car payment to contend with. Sigh. Take a deep breath; it calms the mind… so they say. On that note, I am happy to report to many inquiring readers that I have found a new yoga studio at which to continue my practice; new locale, anyway – same teacher, same familiar faces, same positive vibes. It’s amazing what those 75 minutes can do for the soul, even after the most pressing of days. There is something truly healing about those inhales and exhales, even while the mind races through its endless loop of thoughts. We could all benefit from

slowing down the pace a bit, mentally and physically. What has rushing ever accomplished that more careful consideration and contemplation couldn’t have improved upon? Even my baby betta, Spud, seems to have realized this, as he purposefully swims to and fro in his tiny bowl, stopping every so often – about once every five minutes, on average – to carefully inspect the thermometer I recently installed. Maybe he can read? Even his eating habits are methodical, as he carefully chooses each crumb, gobbling them up in – I kid you not – size order. And here I thought I was a bit OCD. Like human, like pet. And with that, the clock has tolled on deadline. And so, In Step readers, I bid you a fond adieu. ‘Til next week. Make it a good one.

On the weekend of March 10th-12th, the freshman Red team participated in the CAN/AM 2017 Challenge Cup Tournament at the Lake Placid Olympic Center, competing at both the 1980s Herb Brooks Arena as well as the 1932 Olympic Rink.
