Easter Sunrise Worship Service The Long Island Council of Churches invites one and all to its annual Ecumenical Easter Dawn worship service at Jones Beach State Park on April 1st at 6:30 a.m. The service will be led by people from many denominations and people of all faiths are welcome. The preacher will be the Rev. Thomas W. Goodhue, a retired United Methodist clergyman and Executive
Director Emeritus of the Council. He also will tell a story to children (and the young at heart) from his collection “Sharing the Good News with Children,” published by Franciscan Media. Liturgical dancers from St. David’s Episcopal Church in Cambria Heights, led by Carol Callendar, will perform. In addition, the Bethpage New Apostolic Church choir and the men’s choir
from Woodbury New Apostolic Church will both sing. Other worship leaders will include the Rev. Ron Garner, pastor of Wantagh Memorial Congregational Church, the Rev. Moira Ahearne from Community Presbyterian Church in Merrick and Yolanda Murray from the LICC’s Freeport office. The Council of Churches has been hosting this annual event for many
years. “It has grown steadily over the past fifteen years or so,” Goodhue notes, “drawing hundreds of people from all sorts of backgrounds. Easter celebrates something completely unexpected, Jesus being raised from the dead and God triumphing over injustice. This worship service always celebrates the Resurrection in some way that is fresh and new. This year we will have the
liturgical dancers from Cambria Heights for the first time and two choirs from the New Apostolic Church, the newest denomination to join the Council of Churches. I’m glad to be leading it one more time.” The service will begin at 6:30 a.m. at Jones Beach State Park, Parking Field 6. This is just east of the East Bathhouse, which itself is east of the Wantagh
Parkway. Look for a large blue Long Island Council of Churches banner. The service will be brief (about half an hour) and fairly informal. Dress warmly and bring a blanket or beach chair. Donations for the LICC’s emergency food pantries and monetary contributions for the pantries will be gladly received.

My Spring Awakening I have never seen the play which bears my title, nor am I especially familiar with its subject matter; however, I feel it an appropriate moniker on this, March 21st, as I begin to put my thoughts together for the column you are reading. To start, I have been curious for some time as to why the dates for the first “official” days of each of our four seasons seem to fluctuate year to year when, back in school, the calendar remained fairly standard. The Summer and Winter Solstices fell on June 21st and December 21st, respectively; and the Vernal and Autumnal Equinoxes occurred on March 21st and September 23rd, without fail. Now, it seems most have been pushed up by an entire day, throwing my entire elementary school curriculum into question.
Upon doing a bit of research, it seems this variance is due to a combination of factors; namely, that the earth’s elliptical orbit is gradually changing year after year, causing a slight difference in when the planet reaches its 90-degree intervals around the sun, signaling the change of season. Additionally, the concept that days of Equinox result in the precisely equal separation of day and night is also not quite accurate. This, apparently, is due to atmospheric conditions which lead to “refraction,” leading us to believe we are seeing the sun slightly prior to its rise and a bit past its set.

The Welcome Friends soup kitchens have provided hot, nutritious meals five days every week for over 27 years. The volunteer staff has increased to more than 200 remarkable members, and the guests typically number between 50 to sometimes more than 70 each night. Welcome Friends operates with a 100% volunteer staffed organization, assuring contributors that their donations are used exclusively for the preparation and serving of meals. The volunteers together form an outstanding team that addresses hunger and works to expand relationships with individual supporters,
local food markets, farm stands, religious institutions, community leaders, local village government and other agencies. After almost three decades serving the greater Port Jefferson area, the leaders and volunteers of Port Jefferson’s Soup announced their decision to become an independent not-for-profit corporation named “Welcome Friends.” The operation has become self-sustaining, with a solid foundation of local community support. Welcome Friends is currently in need of the following volunteer positions: Cooks, Assistant Cooks/ Food Prep and Pick Up/Delivery and a Grant Writer. Great American Cleanup As Earth Day approaches on April 22nd, it is time to prepare for the national community enhancement and environmental improvement event known as the Great American Cleanup. The GAC is an initiative of Keep America Beautiful and it involves over 5 million volunteers from approximately 20,000 communities across the country. Keep Islip Clean, which is a not-for-profit affiliate of Keep America Beautiful, is the local
sponsor for this national program. KIC supports thousands of volunteers throughout all hamlets of Islip Township during the GAC each year. These volunteers don gloves, safety vests and litter grabbers to improve their shared community. The goal is to remove litter and debris, clean shorelines and waterways, plant flowers and community gardens and increase recycling, all in public spaces. KIC strives to have an
activity for everyone. People can join large community-wide cleanups organized by KIC or create their own project. All volunteers are given the supplies to ensure a successful event and community service hours are provided for students. The welding students at Islip Career Center are currently in the process of creating horseshoe shamrocks to donate to the St. Baldrick’s Foundation, which benefits childhood cancer research. Islip Career Center (ICC) is an Eastern
Suffolk BOCES school that provides special career education services to students with special needs. The skills students acquire at ICC may enable them to obtain entry-level employment in certain industries. Each horseshoe must
be restored through a labor-intensive process prior to welding them into shamrock configurations. This task involves smoothing edges, grinding away nails, and trimming excess pieces. After completing the prep work, students weld and paint the horseshoes. The class plans to donate approximately 20 horseshoe shamrocks to the foundation, which sells them to raise additional funds and also presents them to individuals who raise significant sums of money. ICC’s welding students have created and donated horseshoe shamrocks to St. Baldrick’s for the last three years. Said Welding Teacher Taylor Terhaar, “Channeling creativity through welding is a lot of fun, but doing so to contribute to a worthy cause is even better.”

Displaying a growing mastery of technology skills, East Islip Middle School students recently held a demonstration of the school’s VEX-supplied robotics program, which debuted this year. This new robotics class, which is made up of seventhand eighth-graders, meets every other day under the direction of technology teacher Hal Kench to perfect the skills needed to operate these machines. Both grade levels learn to work together as a team in order to successfully
complete each task. For the demonstration, the students brought their VEX robots to the middle school’s professional development room to show how they operate and what each robot has to do in order to complete its mission, lifting four colorful blocks and moving and placing them on the opposite square tile. The students then taught district administrators including Superintendent John Dolan, Assistant Superintendent for Instruction and Personnel
Paul Manzo, East Islip Middle School Principal Mark Bernard, and East Islip High School Principal William Brennen - how to use the robots. “This was a true STEM event, showcasing how these students have begun to learn about building robots, and coding and programming them,” said Technology Director Israel Malinowitzer. “The adults also had a great time and tried competing with one another to see who could get all four blocks into one square tile.”
Skills and Substance Broadway returned to Islip High School this February with the school’s fast-paced production of “Legally Blonde,” directed by Dr. Rich Harris Jr. The memorable musical, written by Heather Hach with music and lyrics by Laurence O’Keefe and Nell Benjamin, was based on the 2001 comedy film of the same name. Starring in the lead role was Morgiana McDevitt. Dressed in pink and sporting a blonde wig, she transformed into Elle Woods and not only won the heart of Emmett, played by John DelGenio,
but the entire audience as well. Their talented fellow student-actors brought the story to life with lively songs, snappy dialogue and entertaining choreography. The cast also included Nick D’Auria and Jonathan Powell as Warner Huntington III, Matthew Mahr as Professor Callahan, Emma Regina and Faith Terrill as Paulette Bonafonté, Toni Castranova and Gia Sciara as Brooke TaylorWyndham, Brendan Larson and Jack Michael as Kyle, and Sheila Kiernan and Olivia Schadt as Vivienne Kensington.
“From the moment the curtain opened, all of us in the audience knew we were in for a musical treat,” said Superintendent of Schools Susan Schnebel. “When that curtain closed on the last performance, it was clear to all that this event was more than just a musical production. In today’s world, where people are quick to judge and substance is often overlooked in favor of the superficial, our cast, crew and musicians came together with unity and understanding to positively create a marvelous experience for all.”

Laundry room renovation ideas T o former apartment dwellers or those who have never enjoyed the benefit of a dedicated laundry area, even the smallest washer and dryer space can seem like a luxury. The benefits of dedicated laundry rooms abound. However, disorganized laundry rooms can nullify such benefits. Depending on the needs and preferences of each homeowner, laundry room designs can be customized for convenience.
Employ vertical space
Floor space may be at a premium in a laundry room, especially for those who want to devote as much space as possible to bulk-size washer and dryer units. Therefore, utilizing wall space is key. Use shelving, wire racks, hooks and other organizational tools to store items on the wall. Shelves can be tucked into just about any space, and there are different options that can fit into corners or shallow areas. These are a great option for keeping detergent or other laundry essentials nearby.
Clean designs reduce clutter
Simple, clean designs can be an asset in a laundry room. If budget and space permits, cabinetry built into the design will help keep items out of sight in the laundry room. Cabinets hung directly above the appliances can store detergent, bleach and fabric softener. Use cabinets elsewhere in the room as catch-alls for cleaning supplies used in various other rooms around the house.
Incorporate a sink in the design
Some older laundry room setups have a slop sink to drain discharged water from the washing machine. However, newer homes may have plumbing installed directly through the floor or walls. It is still a worthwhile idea to have a sink in the laundry room for rinsing out stains, handwashing items and having a go-to sink for messier cleanup.

It’s important to select flooring materials that will not be damaged by contact with moisture or spills. Vinyl, tile and some composite products often make good laundry room floor materials. Resilient flooring that mimics the look of hardwood may add a classy touch, and give the appearance of wood without having to worry about damage. To alleviate fatigue
while spending long moments in the laundry room, invest in a memory foam mat that can be placed underfoot.
Keep lighting in mind

ardening enthusiasts may have been thinking about their landscape plans throughout the winter, eager to once again get their hands dirty with soil. Whether a home gardener is making preparations for edible crops or beautiful flowers, he or she must take time to make the soil amenable to planting. To establish hearty, durable plants, gardeners can focus on three main areas: addressing soil composition, cultivating and adding nutrients.
the soil. Mother Earth News suggests working on garden soil when the soil is damp but never wet; otherwise, garden soil can become messy and clumpy. Use a digging fork or shovel to lightly turn the soil when it’s mostly dry. Gentle tillings also can open up the soil to incorporate the nutritional amendments and relieve compaction that likely occurred from freezing temps and snow pressure. Tilling also helps with drainage and oxygen delivery to roots. The DIY Network suggests turning over soil at a depth of 12 inches to work the soil — about the length of a shovel spade. However, the resource Earth Easy says that existing garden beds have a complex soil ecosystem and simply top-dressing with compost or manure can be enough preparation for planting. Gardeners can experiment with the methods that work best for their gardens.
Take a sample of the soil and examine it to see what is present. If the soil is too full of clay, too sandy, too dense or too loose, that can lead to problems where plants cannot grow in strong. Work with a garden center to add the right soil amendments to make a rich soil. This may include organic compost or manure, which will also add nutrients to the soil.
Cultivation
Cultivating the soil can involve different steps. Removal of weeds, errant rocks, roots and other items will help prepare

Testing the pH and the levels of certain nutrients in the soil, namely nitrogen, phosphorous and potassium, will give gardeners an idea of other soil additions that may be needed. Soils with a pH below 6.2 often can benefit from the addition of lime several weeks before planting. Soil tests will determine just how much fertilizer to add to the soil. Complete fertilizers will have equal amounts of nitrogen, phosphorous and potassium. Individual fertilizers can amend the soil with only these nutritional elements that are needed. Top-dressing empty beds with a layer of mulch or compost can prevent weed growth and preserve moisture until it is time to plant. If existing shrubs or plants are in garden beds, use more care so as not to disturb roots or dig too deeply. Preparing garden beds takes some effort initially, but can be well worth the work when plants flourish throughout the growing season.

an astounding experience,” said Desiderio, who attends Joy Taylor’s photography class. “I was honored to be chosen and I thoroughly enjoyed being able to see the perspectives of each contestant. I am proud to have received this opportunity.” Cornell, who is enrolled in Heather Toomey’s electronic illustration class, said, “It was an honor to be chosen for the exhibition, and with my

Every shelter animal comes with a sad story that they’re unable to communicate. Abuse, neglect, abandonment and displacement leave them frightened, bewildered, often despondent and desperately seeking a friend. Pet Peeves, Inc., an umbrella organization that provides financial support to Long Island animal shelters, pet rescue groups, humane education programs and pet therapy programs is hosting its annual Unleash the Love! Luncheon Friday, April 27th at the Crest Hollow
Country Club in Woodbury. Unleash the Love! is Pet Peeves major fundraiser of the year. Proceeds from the luncheon directly benefit local shelters, rescue groups and other programs. Tickets are on sale now at www.petpeeves. org. RSVPs are requested by April 15th. “We think of Pet Peeves as the voice of Long Island pets in need,” says the organization’s founder, Janine Dion. “As a fundraising organization, we do not perform the hands-on rescue but through corporate and
individual donations fund the shelters, rescue groups and individuals who work on the front lines. The monies we raise go directly to animal rescue, care and rehabilitation – not to administration, salaries or issues that do not directly impact the welfare of the animals.” Pet Peeves is a 100% volunteer-driven organization made up of compassionate individuals and corporations who want to make a difference in the lives of vulnerable companion animals and give them a second chance
by supplying the funds needed for food, medical care and a warm place to sleep. Most of all, Pet Peeves helps nonprofit rescue groups and shelters give these desperate animals a chance to find a new family and home through adoption programs. Through its grant process, Pet Peeves provides funds for spay/ neuter programs, low cost and free clinics, medical supplies, trap-neuterreturn [TNR] programs for feral cats and Safe Haven Programs. The organization is also an avid
supporter of pet therapy programs and continually seeks to raise funds and awareness of the programs that bring companion animals into hospitals, nursing homes and schools. It actively supports Humane Education initiatives that provide workshops, seminars and lectures geared to children and their families who own pets, are considering owning a pet, or have avoided pet ownership due to misconceptions or lack of information. and career planning with her students, which is crucial for students in Brentwood,” said Ms. Iqbal. “Without Mrs. Lastorino, I truly do not believe that I would be the person I am today and would not have accomplished the many things that I have without her constant guidance. Past winners of the scholarships have enhanced their teaching by sampling the resources available to Harvard students: meeting with faculty; visiting research laboratories, rare book archives, and specialty museums; and enjoying visual and performance art. The scholarships are funded by contributions from Harvard alumni living on Long Island. This year’s 12 Distinguished Teacher Award winners were nominated by current Harvard undergraduates and then selected by Harvard Club of Long Island board members. This year’s award winners teach economics, English, history, math, physics, chemistry, science research, and Spanish. The winners teach in the Bellmore-Merrick, Bohemia, Brentwood, East Meadow, East Williston, Herricks, Hewlett, Lynbrook, Manhasset, Mt. Sinai, and Roslyn school districts. This is the first year that the Harvard Club of Long Island is honoring Brentwood Union Free School District teachers.

Scholars did this experiment to learn about the scientific Woodhull School on Fire Island. Working with the Woodhull students, they learned process, as well as to learn how to write a lab report. about the heart by dissecting a sheep heart and inventing a tool to clear arteries.

Laura A. Lastorino of Brentwood West Middle School has been named a “Distinguished Teacher of 2018” by the Harvard Club of Long Island. “This award honors teachers who transform lives,” explained Dr. Judith Esterquest, Harvard Club of Long Island Chair of the Distinguished Teacher Selection Committee. “Devoted teachers like Mrs. Lastorino offer Long Island students deep expertise, extraordinary talents, and countless hours of attention. By capturing the minds and imaginations of our children and preparing them for challenges that were unknown even a few decades ago, these teachers shape the future of our
from populist political influence, why the Philadelphia convention was so unrepresentative of national opinion, and why ordinary Americans approved a scheme that drastically reduced their political influence. After graduating from Brentwood High School in 1987, Mrs. Lastorino earned an associate’s degree from Suffolk Community College, a bachelor’s degree in teaching from Dowling College, and a master’s degree from SUNY Stony Brook. She returned to Brentwood to complete her student teaching and started her teaching career in the Brentwood Union Free School District in 1993. She initially taught at Pine Park Elementary School and Southeast Elementary School but since 2003 has taught sixth grade at Brentwood West Middle School. For the last 10 years, Mrs. Lastorino has been one of the chair people for her building’s school improvement team. As a co-chair, she organizes many building events that get students and their families’ involved in after-school events and coordinates schoolwide fundraising. She is also part of a district-wide committee that plans and

Islip High School students in Renee Clock’s career skills and internship course have been learning transferable workplace skills within the Town of Islip’s Department of Parks, Recreation and Cultural Affairs. Mary Pat Klueber, who is the executive assistant to Commissioner Tom Owens, meets with Clock and the students several times a week to assist the high schoolers in learning skills needed to
succeed in the workplace after high school. Taking charge of the department’s warehouse, the Islip students organized, categorized and counted equipment used for the town’s youth after-school and summer programs. They are now in the process of creating a working inventory system for these items. “The students have been applying decisionmaking, critical thinking,
organizational and mathematical skills during this internship,” Clock said. “We are appreciative to the town for providing this real-life work experience for our students. Their participation in the education and work experience of our students is a perfect example of a school-to-business partnership. Ms. Klueber has been paramount in creating this workplace environment for our students.” The students also intern within the town’s offices at Brookwood Hall in East Islip, which also houses the Islip Art Museum and Islip Arts Council, and assist with special assignments. “Ms. Klueber and I vary the work experiences for the students to give them exposure to the numerous job skills that are required to perform the many jobs within this department,” Clock said. Purple is for Positivity East Islip High School recently celebrated P.S. I Love You Day with positivity and teamwork. The event was sponsored for the second consecutive year by the school’s student council, with help from members of several other clubs including the Gay-Straight Alliance, Key Club, STARS and the literary magazine. In preparation for the event, East Islip students cut out purple hearts that were
displayed in the main lobby and made hundreds of purple ribbons that were distributed to students and staff. “It was our goal to have as many clubs as possible come together to make this a success,” said adviser Jessica Pignataro. “We hope to make it bigger and better every year.” P.S. I Love You Day was started in 2010 by West Islip teenager Brooke DiPalma, following the
tragic suicides of her father and a senior at her school. The event is held annually on the second Friday of February to promote positive messages of love, acceptance and community, symbolized by the color purple. In attendance was Islip Town Councilman Steve Flotteron, who spoke with the students about the day and his personal connection to the DiPalma family.
