LOCAL HERO - U.S. Coast Guard Petty Officer 2nd Class Gerard Wynne, an East Islip High School graduate, was instrumental in a heroic rescue in Texas on March 16th. He served as the coxswain of a response boat that saved a man and his dog after a dangerous storm capsized their towboat in Matagorda Bay, and was featured in numerous news reports. Wynne, a member of East Islip’s Class of 2007, enlisted in the Coast Guard after graduating and attended boot camp in Cape May, N.J. He is currently stationed in Port O’Connor, Texas. Music Lovers Scholars

Congratulations to three Bay Shore High School students on placing in the recent Town of Islip Music Lovers Scholarship Competition. Asia Stewart placed 2nd and won a $1,500 scholarship, Vincent Reyes placed 4th and won

a $750 scholarship and James Vaughan won a $150 scholarship for Honorable Mention. This year, over 50 high school musicians from Islip and Babylon townships participated in the competition. Only four vocalists were chosen as scholarship finalists and all

but one of them were from the Bay Shore High School Choir. In addition to receiving scholarships, the top four winners, including Asia and Vinny, will be performing at a benefit concert in April. Congratulations to these talented students.

Suffolk Hall Of Fame The Suffolk County Sports Hall of Fame has announced its class of 2014, which will be inducted on May 2nd at the Upsky Hotel in Hauppauge. This NotFor-Profit Organization was founded in 1990 and recognizes individuals from Suffolk County who have gained prominence in the field of professional and amateur sports. One of this year’s seven inductees will be Steve Borbet, long time Bay Shore High School track and field coach. Borbet has coached Cross-Country, Winter & Spring Track at

Bay Shore for 41 years, beginning in 1975, and began his 123rd straight season of coaching on March 3rd. Some of his many impressive highlights include: most wins ever (County & League Championships) by any coach in Suffolk County history - in any sport(s), 37 Suffolk County Championships, 64 Suffolk League Championships, seven individual National Champions in Track & Field, seven National Relay Champions in Track, 24 New York State Champions

(individual & relays) and being named Suffolk County Coach of the Year 38 times and Suffolk League Coach of the Year 64 times. The Suffolk County Sports Hall of Fame is located in Patchogue and serves as a center for educating students and adults about cultural, historical and individual contributions to the world of athletics. Congratulations to Steve Borbet on this outstanding achievement.

PENNIES FOR PATIENTS - The National Junior Honor Society’s annual Pennies For Patients fundraiser is underway. In conjunction with the Leukemia and Lymphoma Society, the world’s largest voluntary health organization dedicated to funding blood cancer research and providing education and patient services, students at Bay Shore Middle School visited advisory rooms and volunteered their lunch periods to collect donations for this worthy cause. The event runs for three weeks.

BEST OF THE BEST - Heather Toomey, an art teacher at East Islip High School, was recognized for being voted Best Teacher on Long Island in the annual Bethpage Best of L.I. competition. Talking Points By: Jamie Lynn Ryan Discovering The Passion To Do What You Love … This is the topic I selected for my upcoming presentation at the annual C.W. Post Honors Conference, a oneday schedule of seminars and panels, lectures and performances, all centered around a common theme, this year’s being Creative Engagement. When initially approached about the prospect of being a part of this Conference, one I had attended each year of my own tenure at C.W. Post, my first reaction was the usual mix of anxiety and sheer terror that comes when any form of public speaking is broached. And this, for an entire hour, in front of the best and the brightest my alma mater has to offer? I could feel the panic setting in, and the event was still months away.

Now, only one week remains ‘til the big day – and I’m still wrestling with what, exactly, I have to offer this group of impressionable young minds, all at the point in their lives where they are desperately trying to do exactly what my title suggests – discover that passion which will drive them into a particular field, hopefully to stay, for a long and fulfilling career. I guess a good starting point would be the initial inspiration for my topic, a letter I received from a local reader many months ago, in response to a column I had recently published, stating: “I wanted to let you know that indeed your words were read and inspired someone… as a humble writer myself, I know that is all we really want after all.” Creative Engagement at its best, no? Just the knowledge that my words had reached someone is some of the most positive feedback one can receive.

This is not to say that we all need constant pats on the back in order to feel valued and successful (although some certainly do). It simply reaffirms the notion that what we do for a living should be more than a job; it should reach far beyond the scope of merely being a means to an end, a way to pay the bills, etc. Above all else, it should engage YOU. If others find a similar connection through you, so much the better, an added bonus. I still don’t know exactly what I will say once I step to the head of the classroom a little over a week from now. But I suppose a good starting point is simply speaking openly and honestly and attempting to make a connection. And if I can reach even one person and help them discover his/her own passion in life, I will consider it a success.

Celebrating Culture

Cultural activities were in full swing during East Islip High School’s celebration of Foreign Language Week, held in the school’s library. From American Sign Language Day on March 4th through the culminating annual International Cafe on March 7th, students and teachers participated in dance, food and media presentations showcasing French, Italian and Spanish/Latino culture as well as ASL. The weeklong festivities kicked off with ASL Day. “This was the fourth year that American Sign Language Day has been a part of Foreign Language Week,” said ASL teacher Jovina Ricciardi. “It’s a

great opportunity for my advanced students to show their knowledge of ASL through interpreting popular songs and teaching the ABCs as well as everyday signs to their fellow foreign language peers.” On March 4th, French Club members celebrated Mardi Gras with a trivia game and the construction of colorful Mardi Gras masks. The following day saw a Spanish dance and culture presentation by the Sol y Sombra troupe, who demonstrated traditional dance forms and taught handclapping patterns by playing castanets. At the International Cafe, more than 1,000 students and faculty members

joined together for a grand finale to the week, enjoying a menu of representative foods and beverages from the cuisines of France, Italy, Spain and Latin America, reflecting the three Romance languages taught at the school. Members of the East Islip Foreign Language Honor Society served as waiters and waitresses, chefs, food servers, cashiers converting dollars to euros, music helpers and food delivery persons. New Configuration

Remember when you were eight years old and had to look up the spelling and meaning of words just to compose a complete sentence? What happened if you did not have a dictionary at home? Third graders at South Country and Gardiner Manor Schools were fortunate enough to receive generously donated

dictionaries and support materials from the Rotary Club of Bay Shore and the First Baptist Church. Rotary’s District Governor Gwenn Ramage, Rev. Dr. Daris Dixon Clark, Ms. Virginia Bull and Rotary Club President Mr. Mark Velapoldi were among the many volunteers who spread cheer through the gift of words.

It was a great day to be a 3rd grader. Children received their dictionaries in a special assembly and were excited to get them back to class and use them. Many thanks to all the members of the Rotary Club of Bay Shore and First Baptist Church for this act of kindness and their ongoing support of student learning.

At its March 13th business meeting, the East Islip Board of Education voted 4-1 in favor of implementing a new grade span reconfiguration of the district’s four existing elementary schools for 2014-2015. The new structure will help the district maintain its current four elementary school buildings, without an imminent school closure, and will pair elementary school teachers and students by grade in the same buildings next September – a model currently used in other high-performing districts. In a series of community forums held in February and March, the district

reiterated that the model can only enhance educational opportunities and will help to preserve a full-day kindergarten program, reduce current average class sizes, and maintain the current offerings in music and the arts for the 2014-2015 school year. Additionally, the district believes that opportunities for dynamic interaction among a talented teaching staff will be enhanced as it continues to distribute high-level instruction and continuity of curriculum. Schools will have the following indicated modified grade-level configurations to maximize building capacity,

efficiency and services for the district’s elementary student population as follows: • One K-2 primary school building – north side • One 3-5 intermediate school building – north side • One K-2 primary school building – south side • One 3-5 intermediate school building – south side The School Board is considering which grades will be housed in each building and will have the respective buildings clarified shortly.

Confirming his commitment and interest in the selection process, Meehan submitted a comprehensive application for review comprised of detailed essays, selfassessments, school reports, recommendations and transcripts, which will undergo a rigorous evaluation by a highly qualified educational panel. In April, 500 Scholar candidates will be named as semifinalists, and up to 141 students from this pool of candidates are then named U.S Presidential Scholars in May, recognized as some of the nation’s most distinguished graduating high school seniors. The Scholars are invited on an expense-paid trip to Washington, D.C. in June to participate in

monthly business meeting. His career at East Islip will conclude after the 20132014 school year ends. “We will miss you terribly,” said Alise BeckerSanta, the district’s assistant superintendent for instruction and personnel, noting Fraser’s eight years of strong stewardship of the school district’s business matters. “Carl, you are a gentleman and a gifted business official,” added Superintendent of Schools Linda J. Rozzi. In 2012, Fraser received the prestigious Philip B.

East Islip High School senior and upcoming valedictorian William Meehan is one of only approximately 3,000 students nationwide – and one of only a dozen in Suffolk County and 34 on Long Island – who has been named a candidate in the U.S. Presidential Scholars Program, now in its 50th year. Each year, roughly 20 male and 20 female students are selected per state, by invitation only, based on their exceptional SAT or ACT scores, superior

National Recognition Weekend, culminating in a White House-sponsored recognition ceremony in which medallions are presented to the recipients. In other recent accolades, the top-ranked Meehan was named an AP Scholar with Distinction by the College Board, as well as a Commended Student in the 2014 National Merit Scholarship Program, based on his outstanding score on the 2012 Preliminary SAT/ National Merit Scholarship Qualifying Test. He also achieved the highest possible composite score of 36 on the ACT college admission and placement exam, a significant and rare achievement. Nationwide, only 781 out of more 1.66 million high school students who took the ACT test earned this score.

For the East Islip varsity girls bowling team, 20132014 was a truly perfect season, finishing as undefeated New York State champions as well as league and county champions. It was their 16th consecutive league championship and 21st overall. Other team statistics of note – all tops in the county – included their 10-0 season record (winning 358 points and losing only 42), high game (1,192), high series (3,412), team average (1,075) and average per bowler (215). In the January 30th wild card tournament, the Lady Redmen scored a three-

game total of 3,200 (213 per bowler). At the county playoffs on February 1st, they earned East Islip’s 10th championship with a team total of 6,273 (209 average per bowler). Scoring 5,632 as a team (188 average per bowler) at the New York State championships on March 1, the team were named state champions for the third time (East Islip had previously won in 2000 and 2008). All six of East Islip’s starters – seniors Nichole Baione, Jordan Kruger, Megan Kuehne, Veronica Milito and Amanda Schilling, and sophomore

Olivia Lopera – made AllCounty, a first in Suffolk County history. “The girls worked exceptionally hard all season, especially throughout the playoffs,” said varsity coach Harold Cooley Jr. “They deserve and should be proud of all their accomplishments, both team and individually.” Cooley is particularly pleased for the team’s seniors, who have made it to the state playoffs an unprecedented three times, finishing third in 2011, second in 2012 and champions in 2014. “I am elated for them,” he said. “They deserved it. The senior athletes have added to the tradition established in the past by their peers. With less than forty school days of my senior year left, I am beginning to understand why people are always talking about savoring the moment. As a high school senior, I am very excited to be “in the home stretch,” even though this means that I am one step closer to leaving my home, my school and my family. With just about four months before I leave, I find myself spending more time with my brother. Lately, we have been bonding over the simplest things. Perhaps, this is because he will be sad when I

leave for college, like my mom predicts; however I have my own theory. I believe that I am the one who will miss him when I leave for college! As the primary agent of my socialization for these past seventeen years, my family has had a ridiculous impact on my personality. My brother, more than anyone, has shaped my life. He is the peanut butter to my jelly; my little brother has always been there for me. Even though I am counting down the days before I hit the road, I am well aware that my days with family

are numbered. I know that I am going to miss them. Even though I will love college, I will miss playing catch with my little brother on the front lawn. I will miss my mom’s cooking, and I will miss my dad’s antics. As I cross off each day on the calendar of my high school career, I can say that I enjoyed every minute that I spent with my friends and family. When I start the next chapter of my life, I will not forget the memories that have been formed or the bonds that I have made with my friends, and most importantly, my brother.

All Kids Fair The 4th Annual All Kids Fair takes place on Sunday, April 27th, from 10:00 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. at the Melville Marriott - Long Island. The event is dedicated to bringing together individuals, businesses, and non-profit organizations with children from birth through high school age and their families. The All Kids Fair is part education and activities expo and part health and wellness fair. In over 80 exhibitor spaces, many

available programs and services will be presented, including after school activities, birthday party ideas, schools, camps, health and wellness products and services, special needs, financial services, day cares, and tutoring. In four speaker rooms, some classes will be focused on the adults and others will be geared towards children. Topics for the adults include childhood obesity and treatments

for varicose veins from pregnancy. Classes for the children and their families to enjoy together include music, crafts, and fitness classes. For their attendees’ convenience, a new addition to this year’s event is free valet parking. Also, QuackerJack of the Long Island Ducks will be visiting and taking photos with the kids. Choir Raises Funds

At East Islip High School’s first of two winter concerts last December 17th, the honors choir performed a beautiful a cappella piece, composer Kurt Bestor’s Prayer Of The Children. Bestor had originally written the piece to reflect the experiences of children living in wartorn Yugoslavia in the early 1990s. However, the East Islip choir students performed it in honor of the victims and families of the 2012 tragedy at Sandy

Hook Elementary School in Newtown, Conn. The students collected donations from the audience members during the concert, as well as from their fellow students during subsequent lunch periods. Additional donations were made by two of the high school’s staff – foreign language teacher Marylou Ferreri, who began her teaching career as a perdiem substitute teacher in Newtown, and Bethany Affelt, the director of the honors choir.

Through these means, the choir was able to make a donation of more than $1,000 to the Newtown Memorial Fund. A display of green and white ribbons was set up in the high school’s main lobby, signed by those who had donated money to the cause. “We thank all of the students and East Islip community members who donated,” said Affelt. Nesting Bald Eagles Staff from The Nature Conservancy confirmed recently the presence of a pair of nesting Bald Eagles at The Conservancy’s Mashomack Preserve on Shelter Island, New York. The eagle nest at Mashomack Preserve is just the third known nesting site in the Long Island region in recent times. Tucked away high in an oak tree in a remote, hard to access location, the birds were discovered by Nature Conservancy’s Preserve Manager Mike Scheibel, who said, “Bald eagles have recently become a regular sight on Shelter Island. We are extremely pleased to find them nesting on the Mashomack Preserve where years ago The Nature Conservancy preserved this land as a secure nesting area for ospreys. It is indeed rewarding to know that this valuable habitat is now also home to our national symbol.” Edged in white by 12-miles of coastline, Mashomack Preserve on Shelter Island is considered one of the richest habitats in the Northeast. Just 90 miles from New York City, the preserve covers a third of Shelter Island with 2,039 acres of interlacing

tidal creeks, mature oak woodlands, fields, and freshwater marshes and is often referred to as the “Jewel of the Peconic Bay.” “The fact that bald eagles are nesting at Mashomack speaks to the value of preserved land and its significance for wildlife,” said Michael Laspia, Director of Mashomack Preserve. “We couldn’t be happier that our national bird is gracing us with its presence –and we hope this majestic species has a successful season rearing its young here.” Mashomack was purchased by The Nature Conservancy 34 years ago, in an effort to stop development of this nearly pristine peninsula and to protect an important concentration nesting ospreys along the northeast coast. The bald eagle is an opportunistic feeder and subsists mainly on fish, although capable of catching live fish bald eagles are primarily scavengers feeding on dead fish found on the beach or stolen from ospreys. Ensuring that healthy fish populations –and good water quality is maintained in the Peconic Bay and other Long Island waters
