Seeing the Signs By: Jamie Lynn Ryan

I’m always looking for signs. Except when I’m not, which makes them all the more poignant and undeniable. Case in point, the one year anniversary of my grandfather’s passing recently came and went on March 13th, bringing with it the anticipated mix of sadness and reflection that these milestones tend to create. Back on that day, one year ago, shortly after learning the devastating news, I stared blankly out my sliding glass door at the tree directly in front of my apartment, only to be met

with the gaze of one solitary robin. Sitting. Staring. I must have stood at that door for a solid half hour, mesmerized by this tiny bird, alone in a barren tree, his eyes fixated on me. Was it a sign? Was it just a matter of ironic timing? Who knows… I chose to find solace in the serenity of the moment, comfort in the quiet. A month later, we discovered a nest of four perfect robin’s eggs at my grandparents’ house, the first of its kind in that backyard, ever. We marveled at how it seemed to literally drop out of the sky at a most opportune moment, manifesting out of thin air,

a precious symbol that life does, in fact, go on. Fast forward to last week. I ran quickly to the store for a bunch of roses to bring to the cemetery, knowing that the impending “blizzard” and freezing temperatures would most likely destroy them in a matter of hours. As I headed back to the car, a sign for birdseed caught my eye. And then, it hit me. Suddenly, I heard chirping. Loud, incessant chirping. I turned around, searching for the source… and there it was, a single, solitary robin, sitting on the top of the pile. Some signs, you just don’t see coming.

(SBPLI)’s Long Island Regional FIRST® Robotics Competition since it first opened the doors to the organization in 2005. The event, which this year takes place March 31st and April 1st at the University’s David S. Mack Sports and Exhibition Complex, is made possible through the funding and support of donors such as Hofstra. “Hosting the FIRST Robotics Competition has been a very rewarding experience for us,” says Dr. Sina Y. Students in the Retail Store Services Program, Canine Careers Program, and Health Related Occupations Program at the Eastern Suffolk BOCES Islip Career Center recently participated in a New York Committee for Occupational Safety and Healthy (NYCOSH) training. Founded in 1979, NYCOSH has worked to defend every person’s right to a safe and healthy workplace. They offer training, education, and advocacy. NYCOSH representative Susan McQuade told the students about their rights. They have the right to a fair and full day’s pay

Champions of Character East Islip Middle School held its 10th annual Breakfast of Champions on March 7th, recognizing 48 sixth- and seventh-graders who best demonstrated the school’s “six pillars of character” – citizenship, dedication, integrity, positive attitude, respect and responsibility –during the 2016-2017 school year. Each honoree was selected by a team or department at the middle school. With the students’ families in attendance, the ceremony began with greetings from Principal Mark Bernard. Nicholas Bilotti and Jason Stanton, the school’s assistant

for a full day’s work, the right to overtime pay, the right to be safe, the right from harassment and discrimination, and they have the right to organize (meaning they have the right to get together with co-workers to improve working conditions). Most young people work in the retail industry and half are injured or killed on the job. Many are not given protective equipment, they do not receive education and training, and they are asked to do work that is against the law for their age. A person under the age of 18 cannot drive a four wheel vehicle; slice meat with a machine,

manufacture brick or tile, work on a roof, or do demolition work. There are many more jobs that are dangerous and against the law for workers younger than 18 years old to do. This information can be found on the NYCOSH website. Retail Store Services Teacher Ginny Rios said, “Our students are learning skills to work in areas like food service, health care, retail, and maintenance. It’s important they are educated about their rights and how they protect themselves. We invite a representative from NYCOSH to speak to our students each school year.”

Christi Wilbert, an alumna of East Islip High School’s Class of 2014, is currently a college junior attending California State University, Long Beach, working to earn her bachelor’s degree in graphic design while minoring in web technologies and applications. Her immersion in East Islip teacher James Connell’s graphic communications and video production classes led directly to her current success in both college and recent design competitions.

“My interest in graphic design and the technology field was sparked by my experiences in Mr. Connell’s classes,” said Wilbert. “Experiencing a broad sample of the many facets of the technology field encouraged me to work on tying together as many aspects of design and technology as possible, and the skills I learned in the graphic communications class are the foundation for the graphic design skill set I currently have. Those courses at East Islip set me up for success in college

and beyond.” As part of a brand workshop class, Wilbert was recently invited to work on an internal branding project for Hallmark, providing her with valuable realworld experience. She also participated in Knowbility’s OpenAIR 2016 collegiate web design competition, where she was part of a team that paired with and created an accessible website for a nonprofit organization. Wilbert’s team earned first place. “Christi was one of my all-time favorite students,” said Connell. “Her enthusiasm for the classes she took with me was very rewarding to me as her teacher. North Shore Land Alliance, a local land trust, is seeking high school students, retirees, educators, nature enthusiasts, youth groups and community-minded businesses to help protect and steward the beautiful areas in our communities. These areas safeguard our air and water supplies, provide wildlife habitat and create places for people of all ages to play, learn and connect with nature. The Land Alliance is very fortunate to work with more than 200 volunteers who contribute 1,000 hours of community service annually. Stony Brook University will recognize the 47th Vice President of the United States of America, the Honorable Joseph R. Biden Jr., at its annual Stars of Stony Brook Gala on Wednesday, April 19th, at Pier Sixty at Chelsea Piers at 6:30 p.m. in New York City. Vice President Biden is being recognized for his outstanding career and dedication to the fight against cancer. “Cancer touches us all in some way and at some point,” said Vice President Biden. “Everywhere I go, people share their stories of heartbreak and hope. And every day, I’m reminded that our work to end cancer as we know it is bigger than just a single person. It carries the hopes and dreams of millions of people who are praying that we succeed, praying for hope, praying for time – not someday, but now.” Joe Biden has devoted his life to public service and the greater good. As Vice President he led the White House Cancer Moonshot, with the mission to double the rate of progress in preventing and fighting the disease. Under his leadership, the White House Cancer Moonshot Task Force catalyzed novel, innovative and impactful collaborations among twenty government agencies, departments and White House offices and over seventy private sector collaborations designed to achieve a decades’ worth of progress in the prevention,

diagnosis and treatment of cancer in just five years. In addition, he helped lead the effort to pass the 21st Century Cures Act that provides $1.8 billion over seven years for the Cancer Moonshot’s scientific priorities. “We are privileged to have the opportunity to honor former Vice President Biden,” said Stony Brook University President Samuel L. Stanley. “The Cancer Moonshot has the potential to transform cancer research and prevention around the world. This critical initiative is a reflection of the work our researchers and doctors are doing in Stony Brook Cancer Center labs – using insight, innovation and strategic collaborations to push the boundaries of what we know about how best to diagnose treat and ultimately prevent the disease that is responsible for more than 8 million deaths a year worldwide.” Research and discovery are at the heart of the Stony Brook ethos and the university’s Cancer Center is a shining example of its commitment to combating the malady. Stony Brook doctors are on the forefront of the next generation in cancer care. The Cancer Center will relocate next year to the new 254,000 square-foot Medical and Research Translation facility (MART) which was designed to enable scientists and physicians to work side by side to advance

cancer research and imaging diagnostics. It will be home to the new Bahl Center for Metabolomics and Imaging, for instance, Stony Brook researchers are receiving worldwide attention for their pioneering research into the genesis and behavior of cancer cells at the molecular level, which will one day help detect, treat, and eliminate the disease altogether. Every spring the Stony Brook Foundation hosts the Stars of Stony Brook Gala to benefit student scholarships and a select academic program. Since its inception in 2000, the event has raised more than $42 million. A portion of the net proceeds from this year’s gala will support the Stony Brook Cancer Center. UPS recently announced that 63 elite drivers from New York are among 1,575 newly inducted worldwide into the Circle of Honor, an honorary organization for UPS drivers who have achieved 25 or more years of accident-free driving. New York boasts 307 active Circle of Honor drivers with a combined 8,675 years of accident-free

driving. Ronald McKnight of the Bronx is the state’s senior-most safe driver, with 48 years of accidentfree driving under his belt. There are 5,217 total fulltime UPS drivers in New York. Globally, 9,349 active UPS drivers are members of the Circle of Honor. Collectively they’ve racked up 266,554 years and

nearly 14 billion safe miles during their careers. That’s enough miles to travel to the moon and back almost 29,000 times. “My thanks go to all of them for their dedication and focus and for the countless lives they’ve saved,” said George Brooks, president, UPS East Region. “Their attention to detail has kept them safe

King Kullen Cares

King Kullen, America’s First Supermarket, recently came to the aid of Long Islanders in need by hosting a “Check Out Hunger” campaign in its stores, raising $35,000. The money was donated to the Long Island Cares/Harry Chapin Food Bank, which has been serving the hungry on Long Island since 1980. King Kullen Co-President Brian C. year’s campaign ran from October through December 31, 2016. Dance Honors

Another milestone was celebrated at Nassau BOCES Long Island High School for the Arts (LIHSA) when its first cohort of students was inducted into the National Honor Society for Dance Arts (NHSDA) in February. The seven students from throughout Long Island were recognized not only for their skill on the dance floor but also for their academic achievements and leadership. The inductees were Tara Durkin (Massapequa UFSD), Jason Fauser (Northport-East Northport

UFSD), Alexandra Ferrugia (Massapequa UFSD), Madison McGrath (Massapequa UFSD), Rose Ozimkowski (Northport-East Northport UFSD), Aliyah Petrone (Massapequa UFSD), Jared Stern (Levittown UFSD) and Sydney Weltman (Bellmore-Merrick CHSD). “These are highachieving students with evolving artistry and a genuine interest in so many areas of the arts,” said LIHSA’s lead dance teacher Dina DenisPaolucci, who spearheaded the efforts to achieve this

national recognition for her students. “I’m really proud of all of you,” she told the students. “This is a huge accomplishment for our program.” The students were directly involved in the development of the LIHSA chapter of the NHSDA and helped plan their own induction ceremony.
