The key, I suppose, it to find a way to bottle that feeling and be able to call upon it when needed, to apply it to the world beyond my yoga mat. Perhaps that comes with practice. More practice than the once-aweek, sporadic schedule I have assembled for myself. One can only assume. One day at a time. One class at a time. One deep breath at a time. That’s all any of us can focus on in our infinite quest to find that deep, soul-searching sense of meaning to it all. No stress, no judgment, no pressure. Just you, alone with your thoughts. Breathe in, breathe out. And repeat.

I settled into somewhat of a routine, using the classes to de-stress and unwind. Then came the winter, that vast, endless stretch of bitter cold, spurring the urge to hibernate until the first flowers decided to bloom. Unfortunately, stress doesn’t wait until spring, and so, come March, back to yoga I went. The first few weeks were a bit rough, what with the creaking bones and stiff muscles and, well, just a general laziness and lack of motivation. But, like magic, after getting back into a bit of a routine, there it was – that old familiar feeling of inner peace. For a few minutes anyway.

NEW UNIT UNVEILED - Staff at Good Samaritan Hospital Medical Center were joined by administration and physicians, community members and elected officials at the recent ribbon cutting for the Mother Baby unit. Here, mothers and newborns remain together in private rooms for the entire hospital stay. For the nearly 2,800 babies delivered a year, this approach offers several benefits, including facilitating mother-baby bonding and establishing breastfeeding.

Reaching Their Goal Magnificent Voices, a self-advocacy group at AHRC Suffolk comprised of individuals with intellectual and developmental disabilities, made the decision to become more involved in their community by making a difference in the life of a child. What better way to do this than to partner with Big Brothers and Big Sisters of Long Island (BBBSLI) for a clothing drive? BBBSLI set Magnificent Voices’ goal at 200 bags of clothing; if they reached that goal it would provide BBBSLI with the funding needed to match an “at risk” child facing adversity with a caring, screened adult mentor. The group exceeded their goal by collecting over 240 bags of clothing from all of AHRC Suffolk’s day programs across the Suffolk County, making them the first
organization to reach their goal with BBBSLI for 2015. “I am happy because we are helping the community and Big Brothers Big Sisters will help children,” said Michael Kelly, Magnificent Voices Member. Magnificent Voices is using projects like this to get more involved in their communities and to find platforms to become better advocates for themselves and others. They are working together to create community connections that will further their reach and their mission. Being a part of this group and being involved in these projects has helped its members find their voices. “It’s important to speak up for yourself and we learn that,” said Peter Hathaway, regarding Magnificent Voices. “It’s
good to help other people out and it’s important.” By holding this clothing drive, Magnificent Voices has helped BBBSLI to further their mission of helping children who face adversity through mentoring. The 45 members of Magnificent Voices have made helping others a priority, it is one of their main goals; Big Brothers Big Sisters of Long Island helped them achieve that goal. “The members of the Magnificent Voices were an absolute pleasure to work with,” said Joanne Kassebaum, Community Relations Manager of BBBSLI Donation Center. “Their enthusiasm and unwavering drive to meet their goal to make an impact on a child’s life on Long Island was commendable! I’m looking forward to working with them again next year.”

Islanders Visit
Five members of the Islanders team visited the children in the various pediatric units of the Nassau University Medical Center. They were welcomed by Dr. Politi and hospital officials, who took them to the various floors
and introduced them to children in the emergency room, on the 18th floor and in the pediatric outpatient practices. The children, who are big fans of the Islanders, were thrilled to have the players visit them and bring some
cheer during their hospital stay. The players who signed autographs and gifted the children with T-shirts, blankets and Islanders cups were: Ryan Strome, Josh Bailey, Nick Leddy, Thomas Hickey and Brock Nelson.
Student Spotlight HOW TO BE A HERO
SUBMITTED BY: LAURA WALTERS, AGE 15 • LINDENHURST HIGH SCHOOL Have you ever wondered what it would be like to be a hero? I know I have. Wouldn’t it be cool to run into a burning building to save a little baby or catch the criminal? We all know the definition of a hero: A courageous person who helps others without thinking of him or herself or the consequences that may follow. Also, everyone under the sun knows heroes are brave, selfless, caring, etc. But, have you ever thought maybe that’s just not enough? How can something so incredibly important to society have such a short definition and description? That’s because it’s wrong. A hero is an ordinary person who can and will go out of his or her way to help, care and solve people’s problems .... basically, anyone. I bet at least one, if not every teacher you had, told you to be kind to one another, and that you never know what someone else is
going through. I just never knew that person would be my best friend. She had some problems. She lives about thirty to forty-five minutes away from me. We didn’t go to the same school, nor have any mutual friends. We met through our parents. I never knew how close I could grow to someone who lived so far. We can talk for hours. Well, when talking for hours, you run out of things to say. When I asked how school was, I knew it was the worst and best thing I could ask. She admitted she constantly felt uncomfortable in school. She was jealous of all her peers’ happiness. Her parents were fighting a lot, she was bullied, and there was also the secret. This secret was one I knew for a long time and promised to keep to this day. Let’s just say it got to her. She became depressed and cut herself. I, being the friend I am, did what
I needed to do. I told. I told my mom to tell her mom to get her to a therapist. What I didn’t do is tell her secret. I never break my promises. I just told her she was getting bullied and cutting. But this, to any parent, is traumatizing. Long story short, it took three years, but I got her through it. But what does this have to do with heroes? Well, now I consider myself a hero. So does my friend. I’ll never forget the day I got the text: thanks for saving my life. Not to be selfish, but what I did took guts and time. I selflessly got my friend through, by far, the roughest time of her life. I think I am a hero. What I’m trying to say is that even the stupidest thing can keep someone from self-harm. Even the happiest of people go through depression. Please be kind to others, and be a hero by simply listening.

The students represented the ACF Eastern Long Island Chefs Chapter team and won overall in the ACF Northeast Region Baron H. Galand Culinary Knowledge

Fundraiser Set The Southold Historical Society is pleased to announce a special fundraiser – a Chinese Auction – which will take place on Saturday, April 11th. The auction will be held at the Peconic Recreation Center, located at 970 Peconic Lane, Peconic, New York and will be open from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. The Honest Abe fundraiser will benefit the conservation and preservation of the Society’s rare, Civil War “Wide Awake” parade banner. The banner was originally created for the Mattituck “Wide Awake” Club. The “Wide Awakes” were a paramilitary campaign organization affiliated with the American Republican Party during the United States Presidential election of 1860. Local newspapers report that on the day before the election of 1860, the “Wide Awake” groups of the North Fork marched in a torchlight parade through Southold in support of Abraham
Lincoln’s election. The Mattituck Club is mentioned as marching in that parade. While the banner survived mostly intact over the years, it does require preservation work to ensure its long term survival. “Conservation is quite expensive,” stated Geoffrey K. Fleming, Director of the Society, “but this object is so important and so rare – not another example is known from Long Island – that it merits being fully preserved so that it can be shown to the public once more in all its glory.” At the Chinese Auction, there will be a large selection of special items, including elaborate gift baskets, fine jewelry, and art to bid on. Cathie Dunn, who volunteered to run this fundraiser for the Society, has done many other similar events in the past for other local charitable causes. “We are indebted to her for volunteering her time for this event,” stated John Barnes, chair
of the Society’s fundraising committee. Those who attend the auction need not be present to win the item that day. Winners who cannot stay until the auction’s conclusion will be notified the following Monday to pick-up their winnings. In addition to the auction, the staff at Jeni’s Main Street Grill, located at 54195 Main Road in Southold, will be donating all their tips on Friday, April 10th, towards the banner’s preservation. “We hope as many people as possible will partake of Jeni’s fine food and homemade desserts that day to aid our cause,” continued Fleming. A Day For Friendship First-graders in Tracy Pignetti’s class at Islip’s Wing Elementary School recently celebrated Friendship Day by reading books about friendship and
discussing what it means to be a good friend and how to keep a friend. The students also shared a delicious strawberry shortcake treat to
symbolize how different ingredients, like people, can come together and create a special bond.

There might have been some sad faces after a loss against the New York Rangers on Tuesday night – the final faceoff at Nassau Coliseum for both New York based National Hockey League teams – but the New York Islanders scored big smiles with patients at Stony Brook Children’s Hospital on Wednesday afternoon as three players visited the hospital. Leaving their skates and sticks at the rink, forward Eric Boulton (#36),
defensemen Matt Donovan (#46), and defenseman Brian Strait (#37) delivered tee-shirts, beach towels, and hats to the patients and their families. Over 40 patients, along with family members, received visits from the players. The threesome walked through the entire in-patient pediatric unit and the out-pediatric hemotology/oncology clinic at Stony Brook University Cancer Center. They were able to spend some time with the kids,

Books Are Calling In an appropriate analog to the area’s weather, this year’s Parents As Reading Partners program at East Islip’s Timber Point Elementary School revolved around a wintry theme of “Snow Is Falling…Books Are Calling.” The annual PTAsponsored initiative featured an “If I Lived In A Snow Globe” story project, a “Warm And Cozy Guest Reader Day” with students donning pajamas, and a “Snow-e-tree” writing contest. In the latter,
five winning poems were chosen and read over the loudspeaker at morning announcements, and all of the entries were printed into a booklet for students to enjoy. “We had a great time creating lots of fun ways for the students to enjoy reading at home, fitting in with our theme,” said PTA representative and PARP co-chair Denise Feldman. “The feedback was great and the kids did an awesome job with everything.” In a special “Principal’s

Challenge,” the students surpassed their goal by collectively reading over 42,000 minutes during the two weeks of PARP. The reward was seeing Principal Lisa Belz spending an entire day dressed as a snowman. “I’m not sure who had more fun, the students or Dr. Belz,” said Feldman. As PARP came to a close in February, the class in each grade with the highest rate of participation was rewarded with an “Ice-PARP” party in the cafeteria.
Marking 100 Days loved their school and created posters that each collected 100 items. Tying in to the math curriculum, the students also counted to 100, utilizing a variety of objects as well as their rectangular 10 frame counting tools. “The day was filled with numeracy lessons on the many different ways to count to 100,” said
Principal Deborah Smith. “Everyone agreed that the children were 100 days smarter and there were hundreds of happy smiles throughout the school.” In a final, charitable endeavor for the 100th day celebrations, students collected a total of 560 cans to donate to St. Peter’s food pantry.

Watery Wisdom Suffolk County Water Authority educational programs coordinator Kathryn Fedun recently visited sixth-grade science classes at Islip Middle School to discuss awareness of local water
aquifers. Her presentation served to inform students about how clean, drinkable water gets to Long Island’s homes, schools and businesses. The SCWA program also discussed
different ways in which water can become polluted, the importance of keeping our water clean and the process of how water is purified at the SCWA.

Cleats For Feets Carpenter and Councilman Cochrane unanimously agreed that it was a worthwhile initiative that the Town should support, and offered Town Hall and its Annex to serve as official donation sites. “It is programs such as these that can really make a difference in a child’s life,” said Supervisor Carpenter. “We applaud everyone who has been instrumental in organizing this effort, and encourage our residents to think twice before they discard cleats that their children have outgrown, and instead, stop by Town Hall to donate them.” “I have seen first-hand the positive impact that
Challenger Athletics has had on a number of special needs children, so when I learned about the Cleats for Feets Pilot Program, I immediately wanted to get involved,” explained Councilman Cochrane. “The donation box will be in my office, and I look forward to overflowing donations.” Ferrara, a life-long Islip resident and 1996 graduate of Islip High School, along with Spinato, spearheaded the Cleats for Feets Drive, which they say, is different from other donation drives. While both supported the concept of reusing athletic cleats, Ferrara and Spinato realized that the shoes were a haven for spreading bacteria and
funguses. “We knew we could make it better,” Ferrara said. “Being in the business of reducing germs, we knew that donating shoes as is could pose a problem, as it is handing off bacteria and fungus with the equipment. We believed that our products were a perfect resolution to this problem, and began laying the ground work to create our own cleat drive. I am extremely excited at the response we are getting from not just the community, but from the officials here in the Town of Islip. To be able to work with the Town to help members of our community is truly a blessing. This program will help a lot of children in need.” “We are very excited to be part of this new initiative that will benefit kids and make a positive impact on the environment through recycling, “ said Ted Nagengast, Department Chair of Bay Shore High School Athletics. Islip Town Supervisor Angie M. Carpenter and fellow Town Board Member John Cochrane, Jr., were recently joined by representatives of the Bay Shore High School Athletics Department, the nonprofit organization Challenger Athletics, Inc., and Islip-based company Anti3 Protect Series, to announce the official launch of the first annual Cleats for Feets Donation Drive. This campaign will enable residents to drop off used athletic cleats at donation sites at Councilman Cochrane’s office at Islip Town Hall, 655 Main Street, the main lobby of the Town Hall Annex, 401 Main Street, and at Bay Shore High School and Middle School. All donated cleats will first be cleaned and disinfected before being donated to any child in need in Bay Shore Schools. The donation drive has been made possible thanks to the partnership among Bay Shore School District’s Athletes Helping Athletes, Challenger Athletics, Inc., the Town of Islip, and Anti3 Protect Series - a locally-founded company that makes products such as hair and body wash and equipment spray, formulated to protect against skin infections and diseases. Members of Bay Shore School District’s Athletes Helping Athletes are promoting the pilot program in the district, and will collect all donations made to the schools, while Islip native and company founder Chris Ferrara and his partner Dean Spinato of Anti3, will collect the cleats from the Islip Town Hall locations. All donated cleats will then be cleaned and disinfected before being donated to Challenger Athletics, Inc., a nonprofit organization whose goals are to develop social skills, build self-esteem and increase community awareness through sports such as lacrosse and tennis, for distribution throughout the Bay Shore School District. Legacy Of Leadership In the final edition of East Islip High School teacher Greg Kguloian’s Lit.2 Life cross-curriculum lesson program, dubbed “Blue and Gold (Leadership and Legacy),” high schoolers worked in cooperative groups to create a studentcentered learning project for a mock National History Day competition. Groups in each of Kguloian’s English 10 classes worked together to create the three components of their presentation: a news report
about their research on a chosen historic leader, an original skit about that leader and how they came to power and what they accomplished with their power, and a lesson which allowed the students to actually “teach” each other about what they learned via their cooperative research. All of the students used appropriate sources of information and included proper citation for verification of the validity of their reports. Among the leaders
selected for research were Mahatma Gandhi, Jackie Robinson, Sen. Robert F. Kennedy and Martin Luther King Jr. The latter’s famous “I Have A Dream” speech was reenacted by one of the students. “I was bursting with pride about how my students approached and executed their mock National History Day project,” said Kguloian. “It reminded me why I come to work every day.”

Several of our enthusiastic Middle School students worked hard to bring a performance of a creative dramatic production, titled Rise, to center stage. Bullying, scarlet fever, polio, blindness, abuse, and stuttering are just a few of the obstacles that the famous African Americans featured in the Bay Shore Middle School’s
2015 celebration of Black History Month had to rise above in their journeys to success. Before becoming a champion boxer, Olympic runner, musical genius, well-known writer and famed actor, these African Americans were inspired to greatness by their mentors. These individuals were brought to life in a series of vignettes performed by
the students. Thanks to the following staff members and middle school alumni. Without their active participation, dedication, energy, and commitment, the success of this presentation wouldn’t be possible. For Lisa Dieumegard’s first-grade class at Islip’s Wing Elementary School, learning the fundamentals of writing proved worthy of a very special celebration, in which their own personal narratives were published in book form and displayed for their proud parents. The students had spent the previous few months working through the writing process in a series of steps. During the first step, one of immersion, the children listened to mentor texts to learn about the decisions that writers make and the crafts that they use. Using the personal narrative components learned from the mentor texts combined with their own stories, the students began to generate ideas for their own writing. These ideas were then sorted through, and each student selected one idea they wanted to develop
and publish. During the drafting process, the students assembled facts about their topics to write their stories. The students worked with partners during the revising stage to add dialogue and make sure their writing said what they wanted it to say. In editing, they checked that their writing was clear and readable, with a focus on spelling, punctuation, capitalization and word usage. Finally, the children arrived at the publishing stage, where they readied their stories for an audience and words and pictures were finalized. “Watching the children move through the stages of the writing process was very exciting,” said Dieumegard. “Firstgraders love telling stories about themselves and the goings-on of their daily lives, and this gave them the perfect opportunity to take a story that was
