Many St. Patrick’s Day Traditions Are Not From Ireland St. Patrick’s Day is made special by various traditions. Everything from dyeing major cities’ rivers green to parades to enjoying green foods has become part of the pageantry of St. Patrick’s Day. The next time you raise a green beer to your lips, you may wonder which traditions are authentically Irish and which ones were created by regions with an abundance of Irish emigrants. Surprisingly, many seemingly Irish traditions likely began elsewhere. First parade It would be accurate to assume that various elements associated with St. Patrick’s Day began where St. Patrick, the patron saint of Ireland, once resided, including the first St. Patrick’s Day parade. However, some of the first parades held in St. Patrick’s honor took place in two North American cities, New York and Boston, that had high numbers of Irish immigrants, but historians say the first ever St. Patrick’s Day parade was actually held in St. Augustine, Florida in 1601, a year after gunfire blasts were used to honor the saint. The parade may have been at the request of an Irish priest living there at the time. Corned beef and cabbage What would St. Patrick’s Day be without an authentic meal of corned beef and cabbage? This dish is not so authentic after all, and actually is an American innovation. Ham and cabbage was widely eaten in Ireland, but corned beef was a cheaper alternative found in America by immigrants. Therefore, corned beef became a staple of poor Irish immigrants living in lower Manhattan. The salted meat was boiled three times to remove
some of the brine and make it palatable. Green beer Green beer is not an Irish custom, but an American one. The most common beer consumed in Ireland is Guinness, which is dark brown to black in color, making green dye useless in Irish pubs since it would be largely invisible in the stout. Golf tournaments One would not associate golf with St. Patrick’s Day unless they reside in Nome, Alaska. Golf is a popular Irish pastime, and each year the Bering Sea Ice Classic Golf Tournament takes place right around St. Patrick’s Day. Bright green golf balls are used, and breaks are factored in between holes to warm up at local bars.
Wearing green According to The Christian Science Monitor, individuals in the United States started wearing green to celebrate St. Patrick’s Day in the early 1700s. They believed it “made one invisible to leprechauns.” The official color for the holiday used to be a sky blue known as “St. Patrick’s Day Blue,” established during the reign of King George III. In addition to these traditions, specialty items, such as coffees and shakes, also are very popular. However, most of these do not have origins on the Emerald Isle, either. Yet, no matter where traditions began, there’s no denying St. Patrick’s Day has long inspired celebration.
Feast On Irish Pub Fare This St. Patrick’s Day St. Patrick’s Day celebrations were different in 2020. Due to the global COVID-19 pandemic, many communities were forced to cancel their annual St. Patrick’s Day festivities. Typically lively, jovial gatherings of good-spirited revelers, St. Patrick’s Day celebrations are beloved by Irish and non-Irish people alike. Though the COVID-19 vaccines figure to help people across the globe return to a semblance of normalcy at some point in 2021, that long-awaited return to life as the world once knew it is unlikely to occur before mid-March. That means St. Patrick’s Day celebrations in 2021 will likely have to take place at home, much like they did a year ago. With no parade to attend and limited seating at the local Irish pub, wouldbe Patty’s Day revelers may have to take matters into their own hands this March 17. Cooking up some traditional Irish fare, such as this recipe for “Bacon and Cabbage” from Margaret M. Johnson’s “The Irish Pub Cookbook” (Chronicle Books) is a great way to bring a taste of your favorite Irish pub into your home this St. Patrick’s Day. Bacon and Cabbage Serves 4 to 6 3 pounds Irish boiling bacon 1 small head cabbage, cored and quartered Parsley Sauce or Whole-Grain Mustard Sauce for serving (see below) Boiled potatoes for serving 1. Put the bacon in a large saucepan and cover with cold water. Bring the water slowly to a boil, then cover and reduce the heat to medium-low. Simmer, skimming the water occasionally to remove the
foam, for 11⁄2 hours (about 30 minutes per pound), or until the meat is tender when pierced with a fork. 2. About 20 minutes before the bacon is cooked, add the cabbage. Cook for 15 to 20 minutes, or until the cabbage is tender, but not soggy. Transfer the bacon to a serving dish, and let cool for 10 minutes before slicing. Drain the cabbage, reserving 1⁄4 cup of the cooking liquid for the Parsley sauce or 11⁄2 cups for the WholeGrain Mustard Sauce, and transfer to a serving dish. 3. To serve, slice the meat and serve it with the cabbage, potatoes and sauce. Parsley Sauce 4 tablespoons unsalted Kerrygold Irish butter 3 tablespoons all-purpose flour 1⁄4 cup bacon cooking liquid 11⁄4 cups hot milk 1⁄2 cup minced fresh flatleaf parsley Salt and freshly ground pepper to taste In a small saucepan over medium heat, melt the butter. Gradually stir in the flour. Cook for 1 to 2 minutes, or until blended. Slowly stir in the cooking liquid, then the milk. Bring to a boil and cook, whisking constantly, for
3 to 5 minutes, or until slightly thickened. Add the salt, pepper, and parsley and cook, whisking constantly, for 3 to 5 minutes more, or until the sauce is smooth. Serve warm. Whole-Grain Mustard Sauce Makes About 2 Cups 2 tablespoons unsalted Kerrygold Irish butter 1 small onion, chopped 1 clove garlic, minced 2 teaspoons whole-grain mustard 2⁄3 cup dry white wine 11⁄4 cups bacon cooking liquid, plus more as needed 11⁄4 cups half-and-half, plus more as needed Salt and freshly ground pepper to taste In a saucepan, melt the butter over medium heat. Add the onion and garlic and cook for 5 minutes, or until soft. Stir in the mustard and wine and cook for 2 minutes. Add the cooking liquid and half-and-half and cook, whisking constantly, for 5 to 7 minutes, or until reduced by half. Add the salt and pepper and cook for 5 minutes, or until the mixture has a creamy consistency. Add more boiling liquid or half-andhalf, if needed, to make a smooth sauce. Serve warm.

T h e Twilight Wish Foundation is a 501(c) (3) non-profit organization whose mission is to honor and enrich the lives of seniors through intergenerational Twilight Wish celebrations. Since the organization’s founding in 2003, their goal has been to make the world a nicer place to age, one Twilight Wish at a time. When a Twilight Wish is granted, a senior is recognized for all that they have done throughout their lives and is shown that they are appreciated and valued. To date, the Twilight Wish Foundation has granted over 3,700 wishes throughout our country and multiple wishes have being granted on Long Island recently! These wishes have ranged from simple needs wishes, such as shaving razors for nursing home veterans, to living life to the fullest wishes, such as going cross country in a tractor trailer truck. Recently, many Long Island residents had their wishes come true. Each week for the remaining weeks this month, I will feature wishes that were granted right here on Long Island, starting with Kathy W. Dorothy Delia is an 87 year old resident of West Babylon. She worked and volunteered for the Salvation Army in Ridegewood and Queens for over 20 years. Prior to COVID, she was very involved in her church by coordinating the prayer chain, greeting worshippers and helping at fundraisers and events. Dorothy desperately needed dental work, but because she lives on a fixed income, she could not afford it on her own. She had been losing teeth and could only eat soft foods. She wished for dental work, which was granted! In February 2020, she got a new healthy smile! Many seniors experience social isolation, which can lead to undesirable

Adelante of Suffolk County and Pronto of Long Island, both non-profit organizations that serve the predominantly Hispanic and Latino communities of Bay Shore, Central Islip and Brentwood, sponsored a care caravan of food and supplies to local people struggling with homelessness. Called the Help Everyone Love People (HELP) project, the Adelante and Pronto vans were filled with hot and cold food for about 500 people, clothing, personal protection equipment and hygiene products, all donated by local sponsors, including Carroll’s Kitchen, United Health Care, Angels of Long Island and Communities Loving Communities. More than 500 meals were given out by volunteers from Adelante,
Pronto, United Health Care and the students from My Brother’s Keeper. “It has been apparent that during the pandemic there are more and more people struggling with homelessness,” said Maidaya Maldonado, director of Adelante. “Adelante, together with our neighbor Pronto of Long Island, have joined forces to collect food, clothing and other muchneeded items that were distributed. We couldn’t do this without the generous support of our sponsors.” “Serving our community with our sister organization Adelante and our generous sponsors out in the neighborhoods they live in is a blessing and the beginning of many more outreach partnerships to come,” said Marc Soto,
executive director of Pronto of Long Island. Volunteers from Pronto and Adelante helped to distribute the supplies and a strong contingent from Brentwood High School’s My Brother’s Keeper group also participated. The Suffolk County Police Department was also present to assist at each of the four stops. Included in the care packages was contact information for emergency housing options, mental health crisis hotline; and other outreach organizations that can assist people struggling with homelessness. 222.6 on the day, which was 18 pins higher than her season average. The Lady Redmen had key contributions from everyone on the team, including freshman Kailyn Bloch, who shot a 1,265; eighth grader Dakota Collins, who shot a 1,224; junior Kristy
Murphy, who rolled a 1,170; and senior Mia Lembo, who rolled a 1,115. In the final and best match of the day for the team, seventh grader Makayla Boyd came in relief and bowled a 220 in her first county experience. The boys finished the morning session at -92 behind Smithtown. In game 4, the first of the afternoon, they shot a 1,031, a high for all schools in that game, which closed the gap to -12. With a big game 5 scoring 1,103,
the Redmen took the lead and never looked back, finishing the tournament at +89 and swinging the tournament by 181 in the afternoon session. Joseph Zagari, who bowled a county high average during the regular season with 232, totaled 1,462 pins for an extraordinary average of 243 on the day. Captain Dylan Sgueglia bowled 234, 206 and 225 in games 1, 3, and 6;
Sebastian Gebhard rolled 207 and 245 in game 3 and the critical game 5; and Shawn Watts bowled 246 and 210 in games 1 and 4. Seventh grader Matthew Sundberg subbed in game 4 and stayed in the lineup for games 5 and 6, averaging 229. with COVID restrictions, we were uncertain if we would be able to celebrate World Read Aloud Day but we did it, thanks to technology.” “It was such a great experience to be a part of, not only for our students but for their families and Islip staff,” Flynn said. “To see their smiles was heartwarming.”
