in political science, publishing the first article using this method in a major political science journal (American Political Science Review, 1992) as well as a widely-used text for computational modeling in the social sciences (Computational Modeling, Sage, 1996). He also received nine research grants from the National Science Foundation, has edited the journal, Political Psychology, and serves on the editorial boards of several leading political science journals. Chuck’s most recent book, “The Rationalizing Voter,” co-authored with Milton Lodge, won three national awards for best book of 2013. “The Giving Back Award is being awarded to leaders of institutions of higher education who exemplify what it truly means to ‘give back’ to others,” said Holly Mendelson, publisher of INSIGHT Into Diversity magazine. “These administrators are role models, and we honor their efforts to promote diversity and inclusion on their campuses and in their communities.”

The New York State Department of Environmental Conservation (DEC) and Office of Parks, Recreation and Historic Preservation (OPRHP) will hold their annual Spring Family Fishing Festival on Saturday, April 1st, at Belmont Lake State Park. “Freshwater fishing is an activity the whole family can enjoy, especially on Long Island,” DEC Regional Director Carrie M. Gallagher said. “The spring fishing festival at Belmont Lake State Park is an excellent way to kick off the fishing season and introduce the family to the sport. No license is needed to participate. Festival visitors can learn about freshwater fishing opportunities on Long Island and local fishing clubs, try fishing for trout, participate in the casting contest, and more.”
Additional sponsors for the fishing festival include the Natural Heritage Trust, the Fisherman Magazine, and radio stations 106.1 WBLI and 102.3 WBAB. The festival begins at 10 a.m. and is free of charge. Activities include open fishing, fishing instruction, fly casting demonstrations, and fish cleaning services. DEC and a number of local fishing clubs will have a display and demonstration area, and participants are urged to try their hand at fly casting. Loaner rods and free bait will be available to participants throughout the day. The supply of loaner rods is limited and participants are encouraged to bring their own fishing tackle if they have it. Children’s activities also begin at 10 a.m. and include an inflatable slide (weather dependent), the

To further encourage fishing in New York State, Governor Andrew Cuomo signed legislation in 2012 expanding the opportunity for free fishing clinics and allowing more New Yorkers to experience fishing for the first time with increased DEC free fishing clinics throughout the state. The Free Fishing Days program
began in 1991 to enable more people to sample the incredible fishing New York State has to offer. Governor Cuomo’s NY Open for Fishing and Hunting Initiative, under the 2016-2017 budget, provides $3 million for State land access projects and $4 million for hunting and fishing infrastructure. The Spring Fishing

Beware IRS Scams Suffolk County Sheriff Vincent DeMarco wants residents to be on alert for tax season scammers who may attempt to obtain copies of your W-2 forms, file your taxes and steal your refunds. This may happen in the form of official sounding phone calls asking you or your employer for copies of W-2s, or through email phishing scams that ask for personal and employmentrelated information. If you receive such an e-mail, report it to the Internal Revenue Service by sending a copy to phishing@irs.gov with “W-2 Scam” in the subject line. You can also call the special hotline set up by the Treasury Inspector General’s Office at
800.366.4484 or visit them online at https://www. treasury.gov/tigta/contact_ report.shtml. Another common IRS scam involves phone solicitors calling people to demand money to pay for taxes. These callers can be very aggressive and typically threaten to arrest people who do not meet their demands. Here are five tactics that scammers often use but the IRS will not do. If you receive one of these calls, hang up immediately. If you do owe federal taxes, or think you might owe taxes, simply call the IRS at 800.829.1040. IRS workers will answer any questions. Author Visit
On January 25th, students at the Bay Shore Middle School library used Skype to speak with comic book author Mike Maihack. Mr. Maihack presented to our school, as well as a few others, during Teach Graphix Week sponsored by Scholastic, Skype in the Classroom and Microsoft Education. He has written many books including the Cleopatra In Space series and Cat Library. Mr. Maihack graduated from Columbus College Of Art and Design. He currently lives in Lutz, Florida, with his wife, two sons and cat. During his presentation
Mr. Maihack told us about the many procedures he goes through to write and illustrate a book, and how he does them. He explained that he takes about a year to make each comic book because he draws every comic from the ground up. The students in the library were able to listen and ask questions. Stephen asked Mr. Maihack what his favorite comic books are. Gabby asked what inspired him to make his comic books. Kartic asked who his favorite comic book character is. He said to Stephen that Wonder
Woman and Batgirl are his favorite comic books. He told Gabby that the things he does in life by reading and watching everything inspired him to do what he does today. His favorite activity as a child was to draw. This helped him to develop his comics when he became older. Maihack started off posting drawings and small comics online. We really enjoyed our Skype session with Mike Maihack. We hope to connect with many other authors.
WHATEVER FLOATS - Students on Team 61 at Bay Shore Middle School recently learned a lot about buoyancy and gravity. They used tinfoil to craft small boats, which they then filled with marbles to see how long it took for each boat to sink.
Pop Art Hearts
Second-graders at East Islip’s Connetquot Elementary School recently learned about pop artist Jim Dine before creating mixed-media hearts during art classes. Under the direction of teacher Dana BelfioreO’Connell, students were taught how to use oil
pastels, paint, crayon and marker. They utilized the pros and cons of each material, such as turning crayons on their side to create texture and using the small tips of the markers to create intricate details not achievable with other materials. They tried various techniques and
experimented with using the materials in new and exciting ways. “The paint was my favorite material to use because you can blend the colors to make new ones,” said second-grader Kate Habel.

These improvements will also create economic opportunities for local businesses and provide additional streams of revenue for the Town. Atop the list of improvements to Town facilities is the revitalization of Roberto Clemente Park in Brentwood. Supervisor Carpenter’s administration has overseen the removal of all contaminated material, and has started restoring the park so that it may once again be the cornerstone of the Brentwood community. The Town, with the assistance of a $2 million grant secured by NYS Assemblyman Phil Ramos, plans to enhance the features of the park to include a Spray Park, and create a space for local families that rivals any local park in Suffolk County. While committed to improving our parks, Supervisor Carpenter’s administration has also been alleviating troubling developments in residential neighborhoods. The Town’s Division of Code Enforcement has overseen the demolition of many blighted properties that not only de-value surrounding properties, but pose a direct threat to public safety. The Town plans to increase enforcement procedures against these derelict
parcels, all at the expense of the neglectful property owners. The final portion of the speech focused on harnessing the Town’s existing resources to create economic opportunity for Islip residents. To that end, Supervisor Carpenter’s administration will continue to promote and support Islip MacArthur Airport, which recently received the news that the Governor was putting $20 million in the budget to address connectivity between the LIRR and the airport terminal. Supervisor Carpenter also highlighted the work of the Islip Industrial Development Agency, which has enabled companies to retain and create close to 5,000 thousand jobs locally. The number of active projects handled at Islip’s IDA over the past two years has surpassed any previous two-year period in its 42year history. “We remain steadfast in our belief that Islip Town is one of the best places in the state to live, work, and raise a family,” said Supervisor Carpenter. “I promise our residents that with every hour, we will work to make Town government more responsive to the needs of our residents, and to create a better future for Islip’s families.”

Islip Town Supervisor Angie Carpenter addressed local officials and members of the public today during the annual State of the Town address. Supervisor Carpenter used the speech, “Building a better Islip…for all,” to review progress that the Town has made in multiple areas of governance, while also laying-out a vision for the future of Islip Town. The supervisor stressed the importance of teamwork and inclusiveness, and a willingness to embrace challenges that will ultimately lead to prosperity for Islip residents. “I invite all in the Islip community, our residents, businesses, community and civic leaders, to become active participants in planning and shaping the future of our town, as we work together to build a better, more efficient and effective government for all the people living and working in the Town of Islip,” said Supervisor Carpenter. Supervisor Carpenter touted the Town’s strong financial position, noting the Aaa rating from Moody’s, and stressed that now is the time to invest in critical infrastructure improvements in the Town. Such projects would help residents and businesses alike, and save taxpayer dollars in the long-term.

Concord Law School at Kaplan University, the nation’s first fully-online law school, held its 26th graduation today at the Skirball Cultural Center in Los Angeles, celebrating 100 new graduates. The graduating class includes 60 graduates of the Juris Doctor program, 38 graduates of the Executive Juris Doctor program and two graduates of Concord’s Small Business Practice LLM program. Concord Law School Dean Martin Pritikin conferred the degrees. “I am so proud of our graduates, who have managed the challenge of law school on top of full-time work and family commitments. I am also excited for them, as we are at a moment when the legal profession is increasingly recognizing the need to utilize technology to reduce cost and expand access, both for lawyers and the clients
they would serve--precisely what an online law school provides,” said Dean Pritikin. The keynote address was given by Paul R. Kiesel, a partner at Kiesel Law LLP, and the Immediate-Past President of the Los Angeles County Bar Association, where he also served as past Chair of its Litigation Section. Currently Mr. Kiesel is the Co-Chair of the Open Courts Coalition, a bipartisan committee of attorneys from throughout California advocating for full-funding of the civil justice system. “Concord graduates are what the legal profession needs right now. They bring maturity of prior work and life experience to the practice of law; and they are not burdened by the high debt levels associated with traditional law schools, and so have more flexibility to pursue their goals and represent a wide variety of clients,”

Goetz Award for Academic Excellence, which recognizes the Juris Doctor graduates who achieved the highest cumulative grade point average. The Sue Lane Award, honoring a student from the graduating class who embodies strong work ethic, compassionate nature, and service to the community, was presented to Rose Silva (Central Islip, NY) and Susan Lawrence (Lancaster, CA). Meyer, Los Angeles Superior Court, was present to officiate the swearing in of Concord Law School graduate Andrew Bell, class of 2016, to the California State Bar. Islip Town Supervisor Angie Carpenter and the members of the Islip Town Board recently presented a Black History Month Award to Deanna Watts in recognition of her decades of service to our

Recently, Suffolk County Executive Steve Bellone was joined by local officials, the United States Golf Association (USGA) and representatives from the Shinnecock Hills Golf Club to announce the opening of the USGA Championship offices in the Village of Southampton in advance of the 2018 U.S. Open. The Championship will be held at Shinnecock Hills Golf Club on June 14th-17th, 2018. Suffolk County and Shinnecock Hills Golf Club previously hosted the U.S. Open in 1896, 1986, 1995 and 2004. The USGA also recently announced that the U.S. Open will return to Shinnecock Hills in 2026. “I applaud the USGA for having boots on the ground well in advance of the 2018 USGA
Championship,” stated County Executive Steve Bellone. “Charlie Howe, USGA Championship Director, along with other USGA officials have already engaged in planning with the Town and Village of Southampton and the Suffolk County Departments of Economic Development and Planning and Public Works. The Shinnecock Hills Golf Course is one of the best in the world and we are happy to host the U.S. Open in Suffolk County.” Shinnecock Hills is one of the oldest formal organized golf clubs in the United States (1891) and also holds the title of the oldest golf clubhouse in the U.S. (1892). Suffolk County Executive Steve Bellone announced Monday that the expanded Catholic Health Services third annual Suffolk County Marathon will take place Sunday October 29th, starting and ending in Patchogue. The marathon, half marathon, 5K and newly added marathon relay races support organizations serving veterans living in Suffolk County. The race is also a qualifier for the 2019 Boston Marathon. The 2016 race, with 2,677 registered runners, raised $140,000 for veterans’ organizations. “This event is a great opportunity to support the veterans who have sacrificed so much to our community,” the County Executive said. “Because of these races, we are able to bring a spotlight onto their contributions and raise funds that will provide services for veterans in need.” The race will also feature a GPS application that will allow people to

Thunderbirds to Headline Bethpage Federal Credit Union, New York State’s largest credit union, and the New York State Office of Parks, Recreation and Historic Preservation, are very pleased to announce that the United States Air Force Thunderbirds will headline the 14th annual Bethpage Air Show at Jones Beach taking place on Saturday, May 27th and Sunday, May 28th, 2017. The United States Navy Blue Angels have also committed to headline the 2018 Bethpage Air Show at Jones Beach. ‘Tis the time of year when all become Irish for a day, in the honorary sense anyway, and partake in the various St. Patrick’s Day celebrations held across Long Island and New York City. The funny thing is – well, perhaps more ironic than outright humorous – is that when my family and I traveled to Ireland several years ago, we were somewhat surprised to learn that those native to the Emerald Isle do not commemorate the occasion in even remotely the same manner as we do. In fact, the holiday takes on a far more religious tone, filled with pilgrimages to mountaintops to honor St. Patrick himself; a far cry from the drinking and parades which wind through most main streets on this side of the pond.
Speaking of Ireland, and travel, I certainly wish to do more of it, both here and abroad. Before our family trip, I had never been on a plane in my 30 years on this earth; nor, of course, had I bothered to apply for a passport. Old-fashioned road trips across the good old U.S. of A had never held much appeal due to my, shall we say, occasional tendency toward motion sickness during any car ride surpassing two or so hours. And so, at this point, my travels have extended ever so slightly north and south of New York, about halfway down the east coast – no further. And my passport, while it proudly sports that one stamp from Ireland, has remained packed away ever since. Unacceptable, I know. And with that, a new season is on the horizon, although whether Mother Nature will
cooperate remains to be seen. March has always been a notoriously fickle month, what with the remnants of winter storms to contend with, spring rains hovering overhead and blossoms waiting to burst forth from the trees. It is a time of beginnings, of growth, of shaking off the chill of the last several months to head out and feel the warmth of the sun as we explore the great outdoors. No need to pack a suitcase – just hop in the car and go, in any direction, and enjoy the beauty on this long island that we call home. So, as you head out in your green attire this week, take a deep breath of fresh air and start planning some fun activities to see you through to summer. Spring may be a gateway to the season of sun and surf and sand, but it is pretty spectacular in its own right. Enjoy it.

Long Island Yarn Crawl After two successful years, nine yarn shops from Mattituck to Port Washington will be participating in the third annual Long Island Yarn Crawl from March 30th through April 2nd, 2017. Over the course of four days yarn crafters - knitters, crocheters, weavers and spinners - are invited to participate in this self-guided tour of our Long Island yarn shops, which will have extended hours and special activities throughout the weekend. It is a great way for crafters to explore what our local fiber community has to offer and meet other local yarn enthusiasts.
Participants are invited to either pick up their Long Island Yarn Crawl Passport from a participating store or download it from the yarn crawl’s website, and have it stamped as they “crawl” from shop to shop. Crawlers who collect stamps from all 9 stores will be entered to win amazing prizes: the grand prize, a $100 gift card from each of the participating stores; or second prize, over $400 of yarn donated by gold sponsor Knitting Fever. Participants who drop off a passport with fewer than 9 stamps will be entered to win a separate drawing. Further prizes will be announced as the
yarn crawl approaches! Special edition Long Island Yarn Crawl bags can be purchased at participating shops, or are available as a free gift with a $40 minimum purchase (while supplies last). Each store has specials planned and will have drawings for door prizes during the crawl.
