READ EVERY DAY - Bay Shore Middle School scholars know the importance of reading every day. During free time and independent reading, they choose their own books to read and utilize one of the many reading spaces available in the building.

WELCOME TO IB - Scholars at Bay Shore High School who wish to challenge themselves and their abilities have the opportunity to pursue an International Baccalaureate (IB) diploma in addition to a traditional diploma. Those who are joining the program next year had the opportunity at a recent orientation session to ask questions of current and former IB scholars.

CLOSE READING - Bay Shore High School scholars do more than simply read. They use various methods of study to determine the themes and elements of the texts they read. Recently, scholars in Mr. Cummiskey’s class did a close reading of Walden from Thoreau.

MAD SCIENCE - Learning science is even more fun when it is brought to life. Scholars in Mrs. Jackson and Mrs. Partridge’s class at Gardiner Manor School had a visit from the Mad Science Group, who performed experiments that delighted and amazed.

TOP 25 - Congratulations to the Bay Shore Girls Winter Track team! The team SETTING GOALS - Scholars on Team 64 at Bay Shore Middle School know that competed impressively at the Stanner Games. Roshni Singh placed 1st in the 3000 setting goals leads to success. Dr. Jean Tribuzzi recently helped the scholars set reading with a time of 10:11, placing her in the Top 25 in the country. and writing goals for the remainder of the school year.

The Welcome Friends soup kitchens have provided hot, nutritious meals five days every week for over 27 years. The volunteer staff has increased to more than 200 remarkable members, and the guests typically number between 50 to sometimes more than 70 each night. Welcome Friends operates with a 100% volunteer staffed organization, assuring contributors that their donations are used exclusively for the preparation and serving of meals. The volunteers together form an outstanding team that addresses hunger and works to expand relationships with individual supporters, local food markets, farm stands, religious institutions, community leaders, local village government and other agencies. After almost three decades serving the greater Port Jefferson area, the leaders and volunteers of Port Jefferson’s Soup announced their decision to become an independent notfor-profit corporation named “Welcome Friends.” The operation has become self-sustaining, with a solid foundation of local community support. When Life Gives You Lemons Strange as it may seem, I still hope for the best, even though the best, like an interesting piece of mail, so rarely arrives, and even when it does it can be lost so easily. ~ Lemony Snicket ~ The above is one of my favorite quotes, penned by American author Lemony Snicket, creator of the famed “Series of Unfortunate Events” books and several other works. A bit tongue in cheek, with a dash of sarcasm, his words have always resonated with me on many levels. Mostly concerning the irony of life as a whole, they offer an undeniable degree of wisdom in between the cynical undertones. I have often been categorized as an unapologetic idealist; which is to say, optimism mixed with a touch of unrealism. Having taken to heart the expression that you can - quite literally - do anything you put your mind to, I see no valid reason why the seemingly

impossible be not, in fact, very possible with the proper balance of dedication and drive. Of course, this concept often involves multiple parties working as one, which is generally where problems come into play. Individually, we can each set our minds to particular goals and aspirations and see through the necessary steps to complete them. As a group, even a small one, it often requires a meeting of the minds, so to speak, a bit of give and take to find an acceptable middle ground. The problem with this is agreeing upon the “happy” medium. As with most favorite quotations, this particular one seems to resonate year after year, albeit applied to different circumstances; but relevant, nonetheless. As much as time marches on, just as many aspects of life remain the same. I will always feel optimism is a preferable quality to embody, farreaching as it may be. If you can’t hope for the best, then what is the

point of setting goals at all? Sure, the outcome will always be in question; but this is what makes taking calculated risks - and yes, even the occasional blind leap of faith - necessary. It may not pan out the way you desire; but, on the other end, it just might lead to something even more wonderful in the long run. Who’s to say? If life has taught any of us a fairly universal lesson, it is that there are plenty of things beyond our control, just as many things within our grasp; and, as good or bad as a situation may seem at a particular moment, it is apt to change in the blink of an eye. This is why it’s so incredibly important to hold on to the moments of peace and prosperity, fleeting as they may be, while always driving forward to overcome the obstacles which present themselves. If you run over a few lemons in the process; well, that’s what sometimes leads to the sweetest batches of lemonade.

Since September 2017, Law Enforcement students from the Academy at Milliken Technical Center collected and recycled 6,000 empty water bottles. Proceeds from the recycled

bottles donated to the Bottles for the Brave organization cover the cost of postage for mailing packages to deployed troops. Law Enforcement

Teacher Sandra Lochren said, “These students are definitely on a mission. Last year they collected 4,000 bottles. It’s only February and they’ve already collected 6,000.”

The Suffolk County Legislature is slightly more representative of the population it serves with 1/3 of its membership being female. “It is my hope that when we honor the women elected to office, we will inspire more women and girls to want to be part of our democratic process by not only running for office, but to also be engaged in all parts of governmental administration and society,” concluded Legislator Hahn.
