astern Suffolk BOCES students at Masera Learning Center were introduced to shellfish, hermit crabs, sea stars, snails, oysters and clams when they explored a touch tank transported to their school by Lead Marine Educator and Camp Director Marie Cancro from the Cornell Cooperative Extension. Through the ESBOCES Arts-in-Education Program and CCE, students were exposed to sea life without having to leave their building.

Long Ago & Far Away By: Jamie Lynn Ryan Time continues to march on, and those moments we so casually took for granted along the way become nothing more than a distant memory, relegated to the nostalgia pile, to be savored in the imagination only. The difference, though, is that these flashbacks are increasingly from not so long ago, mere years, rather than decades… yet they seem a lifetime away, just out of reach. It’s the little things, too, the laughs shared, the stories told, the impromptu gatherings, the gifts exchanged, the memories made. Whether with family members, friends, co-workers, even the occasional stranger, every moment is part of something
larger, a curve in the path – your path – of life. Every decision made, or not made; each chance encounter or outlined goal – all leads to the point we are currently at, for better or worse. How amazing to be able to foresee the consequences of our actions; but then, our choices would be far simpler, wouldn’t they? Gone would be the mystery, the spontaneity, the happy accidents that tend to occur along the way when you simply close your eyes and just let life take you by the hand. There are those who believe in destiny; and there are those who refuse to think we don’t have as much input in our affairs as any otherworldly force. Which is right? Who’s to say. The only indisputable fact is that everything does
happen for a reason. People come into our lives, or go, as the case may be; and we are better for it. Every chance meeting is a lesson in disguise, to be determined at a later date. In the meantime, we go on, as does time. Our world grows smaller as circumstances change our daily dynamics, and we are forced to adjust, whether we care to or not. The memories fade, and their significance wanes in the face of more urgent, pressing matters. But we should never forget… the people, the places, the roads taken – all have led to here and now. And one day, not so very far away, this, too, will be but a snapshot in the giant album of life. We had best preserve it from now.

First graders then created their own Cats in Hats, did some Seussian brain-work on crossword puzzles, word searches and other fun activities. They honed their math skills and took part in the democratic process by taking a class vote and documenting their favorite books on a bar chart. Getting hands on

Cyril and Methodius School commemorated the month in a number of way, including a dramatic recitation of the poem I Am a Man: Ode to Martin Luther King, Jr., by Eve Merriam. They also worked as a team to create and put
on their play A Protest for Peace, about the Montgomery, Alabama, Bus Boycott in 1955. The efforts of the boycotters proved worthwhile and by the end of the play, the buses were full again after a successful protest.

Fighting to Fifth Competing at the recent Suffolk County wrestling championships at Hofstra University’s Mack Sports Complex, East Islip High School’s Shane Garcia finished fifth overall, earning All-County honors. Garcia, a senior wrestling at 195 pounds, advanced to the quarterfinal
round with a pin over Riverhead’s Jaeden Blom of High School. In the quarterfinals, he faced fifth seed Donny Wetherbee of Sachem North High School, and was trailing 4-1 with 26 seconds remaining in the final period before pinning Wetherbee at 5:41. In the semifinal round,
Garcia lost to the eventual champion, Ward Melville’s Christian Araneo, but fought back to a fifth-place finish. “Congratulations to Shane on a great finish to his season,” said Mike Longobardi, who coached Garcia along with Joe Esposito.

Discovering Darwin
During Darwin Day at Islip’s Commack Road Elementary School, fourth-graders in Judd Kramarcik’s classroom celebrated the life of Charles Darwin. Like Darwin, they became naturalists, “discovering” an unknown species of bird during the February 12th project. Each student then
created a model of his or her bird, including any adaptations the bird would have for surviving in specific ecosystems, like forests or wetlands, using materials including Styrofoam balls, feathers, sticks, pipe cleaners, plastic kitchen utensils and aluminum foil. Students then shared their discoveries using their
models. “By creating these models of a ‘newly discovered’ species of bird, the students are doing what scientists do in the real world,” said Kramarcik. “These young naturalists become fully engaged in their discussions about how the birds adaptations help it survive in the bird’s particular habitat.

The Clinical Medical Assisting (CMA) Program at the Academy LI at Milliken Technical Center (MTC) has a strong and rigorous curriculum. Since September 2015, students have learned medical terminology, basic clinical skills, routine office testing, vital signs, phlebotomy, patient care, fundamentals of health sciences, and procedures for EKG testing and CPR training. Students who successfully complete Clinical Medical Assisting may be eligible for Patient Care Technician certification and the training from this course enables students to become nationally certified by the Certified Healthy
Professional (CHP). In February, American Hearth Month, students ran a Healthy Heart Clinic in the classroom under the supervision of CMA Teachers Betty Martin and Deborah Leedham. Staff and students from other programs in the building signed up to participate. They were assigned a CMA student who remained with them as they rotated through several stations. “The CMA student took the patients vitals, blood pressure, checked their weight and Body Mass Index (BMI), and performed a cholesterol and glucose screening. Over 150 people were screened for unsafe levels and were checked for early warning signs of potential heart problems,”
said Martin. Each CMA student was required to create an informational brochure on topics like cerebral aneurysm, hypertension, myocardial infarction, coronary artery disease, and congestive heart failure to share with their patients. Students also distributed heart healthy recipes. Tamara Cantave, a student from Central Islip UFSD, said, “I want to be a doctor. The CMA course is the first step. It’s a lot of work but I feel accomplished. I like doing the Healthy Heart Clinic; it feels like I’m working in a real office setting.”
Future City Team Islip’s Future City team spent their February break in the nation’s capital, competing in the Future City National Finals after coming out on top in the New York regionals. The four Islip Middle School students from the district’s EXCEL program – Molly Breakstone, Victoria Pearsall, Sofia Rubinson and alternate Darienne Rogers – finished 10th and came home from Washington, D.C. with a trophy for Best Project Plan. Future City, a national, project-based learning experience where students
in grades 6-8 imagine, research, design and build cities of the future, encourages students to design waste management systems for residential and small businesses use. The Islip students’ work involved building a virtual city with SimCity software as well as writing a research essay, constructing a scalemodel and delivering a formal presentation. When not representing Islip at this prestigious STEM competition, the students and their families visited the Lincoln Memorial, Washington Monument, White House,

and several museums on the National Mall. “It was amazing to meet students from all over the nation – plus two teams from China – who have been working so hard to meet fantastically challenging goals and to create innovative futuristic technologies which are plausible in city concepts of the future,” said EXCEL director Julia Johnson. “Just to make it to this level of competition is quite a challenge and for us to leave D.C. with a specialty national award is outstanding.”

Sharpshooter Winners Islip Town Councilman Steve Flotteron and Councilwoman Mary Kate Mullen recently attended the Town’s 30th Annual Sharpshooter Basketball Contest. This annual tradition brings together children in fourth and fifth grade from across Islip Town for some friendly competition and to help promote drug and alcohol awareness. The event was made possible through the efforts of the Islip Parks and Recreation Department, Northwell Health, the Islip Elks and the Islip Housing Authority. “Over 8,000 children participated this year in qualifying events at their schools and in the finals,” said Councilman Steve Flotteron. “For decades, the Sharpshooter Contest has been one of our proudest traditions and has helped inform our kids about the dangers of substance abuse.” “It’s incredible to watch kids from all across our Town come together

Connetquot Celebrates East Islip’s Connetquot Elementary School celebrated the 100th day of the school year on February 23rd with a variety of meaningful literacy and mathematics activities, held throughout the school day. Students demonstrated how they would look as
centenarians; counted to 100 by ones, fives and tens; created crowns with 10 ten-frames that equaled 100, and made T-shirts and posters displaying 100 items. All of the building’s second-graders worked on “pizza posters,” cut into 10 slices. The students topped off each slice with 10
different things for a total of 100 items. Paying tribute to the 100 days of learning that have taken place, the celebration came to a close with a sing-along of “100 Days of School,” arranged by music teacher Aaron Ely to the tune of “I’ve Been Workin’ on the Railroad.”
Marine Education
Eastern Suffolk BOCES (ESBOCES) students at Masera Learning Center were introduced to shellfish, hermit crabs, sea stars, snails, oysters, and clams when they explored a touch tank transported to their school by Lead Marine Educator and Camp Director Marie Cancro from the Cornell Cooperative Extension (CCE). Through the ESBOCES Arts-in-Education
Program and CCE, students were exposed to sea life without having to leave their building. Special Education Teacher Jean Bennett said, “Some students may not get the opportunity to visit an aquarium, so this gave them a chance to experience something different. It was wonderful to watch them go up and touch the sea life, feel the different textures, and see their expressions.”
Cancro also set up a whale table with a variety of objects for the students to touch. She said, “It’s very hands on and it’s a cool way to learn about whales.” After the presentation, the students engaged in culminating activities in their classrooms such as coloring pictures of whales and other sea creatures, and reading books about marine life.
Islip’s Sherwood Elementary School recently issued 21 laptops to students, beginning with the youngest learners in grade 2. The devices, housed in a mobile cart, will float from classroom to classroom on a rotating schedule, providing the students with access to all of the educationenhancing websites currently available in the
computer lab. “Our students are now connected during their school day, which brings them a world of opportunities,” said Principal Maureen Martin Teachers, and staff in network operations and the library media center have been busy implementing the technology with the students. In teacher Robb Le Vien’s classroom,
students have taken the opportunity to use the laptops to explore biographies and the water cycle with Brain Pop Jr. “With the implementation of this initiative, Sherwood continues to align with the school’s Standards of Excellence Committee 2015-2106 goal of emphasizing STEM in the classroom,” said Le Vien.

Scholarships Available A new round of scholarships to encourage high school students to pursue high tech careers in New York State is available. The New York State Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics (STEM) Incentive Program provides a full SUNY tuition scholarship to the top ten percent of students in New York high schools if they major in a STEM field and work in a STEM job in New York State for five years after graduation. To qualify for a STEM award, a student must be attending a New York State high school and be ranked in the top
ten percent of his/her graduating class and enroll in full-time study at a SUNY in the fall term following high school graduation. HSEC SUNY STEM Scholarship Award Eligibility An applicant must: • be a legal resident of NYS and have resided in NYS for 12 continuous months; • be a U.S. citizen or eligible non-citizen; • be a high school senior/recent high school graduate who will be enrolled full time at a SUNY or CUNY college, including community
colleges and the statutory colleges at Cornell University and Alfred University, beginning in the fall term following his or her high school graduation; • be ranked in the top 10 percent of his/ her high school graduating class of a NYS high school; • be matriculated in an undergraduate program leading to a degree in Science, Technology, Engineering or Mathematics at a SUNY or CUNY college; • earn a cumulative
grade point average (GPA) of 2.5 or higher each term after the first semester; • execute a service contract agreeing to reside and work in NYS for five years in the field of Science, Technology, Engineering or Mathematics; • not be in default on a student loan made under any NYS or federal education loan program or repayment of any state award; and • be in compliance with the terms of any service condition imposed by a state
award. Students matriculated in these programs of study may be eligible for a STEM Incentive Program award. The program of study must result in an approved occupation. The deadline for submitting the NYS Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics (STEM) Incentive Program Application is August 15th, 2016.
