The Welcome Friends soup kitchens have provided hot, nutritious meals five days every week for over 27 years. The volunteer staff has increased to more than 200 remarkable members, and the guests typically number between 50 to sometimes more than 70 each night. Welcome Friends operates with a 100% volunteer staffed organization, assuring contributors that their donations are used exclusively for the preparation and serving of meals. The volunteers form an outstanding team that addresses hunger and works to expand relationships with individual supporters, local food markets, farm stands, religious institutions, community leaders and local village government. They begin the day early, picking up and delivering food donations. The food is then stored, sorted and prepared for the chefs. Volunteers set up, serve and clean after mealtimes. After almost three decades serving the greater Port Jefferson area, the leaders

and volunteers of Port Jefferson’s Soup Kitchen announced their decision to become an independent not-for-profit corporation, named “Welcome Friends.” The operation has become selfsustaining with a solid foundation of local community support. As they enter this exciting phase, the new corporation will serve our neighbors in the same caring tradition that has been the hallmark of these soup kitchens. Welcome Friends has independently met the challenge to become selfsustaining to ensure that guests need not fear the loss of meals. Under the leadership of the Executive Committee and Kitchen Coordinators, volunteers create a sense of community for neighbors affected by hunger and poverty by serving them with dignity and respect in a safe welcoming environment. Welcome Friends is currently in need of the following volunteer positions: Cooks, Assistant Cooks/ Food Prep and Pick Up/Delivery and a Grant Writer! Suffolk County Sheriff Errol D. Toulon, Jr. announced today that the Sheriff’s Office has launched a redesigned website at www. suffolksheriff.com. The project was one of the newly elected Sheriff’s first priorities because he wanted to ensure that the public had easy access to information such as visiting and bail instructions, filing for income and property executions, volunteer and intern opportunities - and the wide array of special programs offered by the Suffolk County Sheriff’s Office. “The redesigned website is easier to navigate and contains information on so many of the services that we offer to the public,” said Sheriff Toulon. He added, “I wanted it to be userfriendly, informative and modern, and I think we hit the mark.” One of Sheriff Toulon’s priorities is educating the public about substance

abuse, with a focus on prevention. Links to resources are available directly from the homepage. “I intend to be very outspoken about the drug epidemic and we will be continually posting information and updates on our website, Facebook, Twitter, Instagram and YouTube,” said Sheriff Toulon. In like a lion… so blow the winds of March, and with them, promises of springtime blossoms nurtured by the warmth of the sun. But until then, we must contend with the last of winter’s storms, cold and rainy as they may be. Seems to be a metaphor for life as a whole, this month of transition which ushers us out of the doldrums of our hibernation into newfound energy and possibility. Of course, change is not necessarily seasonal, nor is it always dictated by Mother Nature, but the symbolism holds true nonetheless. Being of Irish descent, one of the more notable milestones has always been St. Patrick’s Day; however, upon visiting the Emerald Isle several years back, I was

intrigued to learn that the date holds little significance for those who reside across the Atlantic. The celebration which ensues on the main streets of many cities in America is, in fact, unique to the great U.S. of A. While spring officially arrives in just about two weeks, I have always associated the beginning of the season with the arrival of the Easter bunny and all the pastel decor it brings. Once April gets underway, it’s a fast track to warmer days ahead, afternoons spent soaking up the sun on the beach and summer concerts under the stars. But I digress. March, the month of tumult and turmoil, fading out into the serenity of spring. So it ﬂows, and with

it we too are carried on the breeze as it beckons better things ahead. In the words of a quote I recently came across, We do not fear the unknown. We fear what we think we know about the unknown. A wise sentiment indeed. If only we could manage to harness these apprehensions and redirect them into positive motivation and drive to move forward, we would all be in much better position to succeed. Easier said than done, as with most things; but still, worth the effort in changing our mentality. Perhaps in the spring. ’Til then, stay warm and dry and enjoy these last few weeks of winter. And then, out like a lamb… to brighter days just over the horizon.

Bellina’s Pizza & Restaurant, located at 22 East Main Street in East Islip, was recently welcomed to the community on November 1st of last year. Owned and operated by co-owners Haki Mucaji and his brother-in-law Mati Shatri, this establishment was immediately seen as a

great addition to the other Main Street businesses. Along with serving delicious pizza, pasta, heroes and other specialties, Bellina’s has a policy of serving those in need in the surrounding neighborhood. A sign at the front door notes that anyone who is hungry and unable to pay will be fed for free. As Mucaji, a native of the former Yugoslavia, reminisced, “My father always said - do good and it will come back to you.” Mucaji says he brought this policy over from a former business in Bay

Following a series of six qualifiers, 40 FIRST® LEGO® League teams from across Nassau and Suffolk Counties are set to compete at the SBPLI Long Island Championship at Longwood High School on Sunday, March 4th. During the event, presented by SchoolBusiness Partnerships of Long Island, Inc. (SBPLI), students (ages nine to 14) and their mentors from the program will present their LEGO robots that best address the “Challenge” set forth in this year’s theme – FIRST HYDRO DYNAMICSSM. Throughout the season, these teams were among the more than 190 that worked hard to research, design, build, program and test LEGO robots that address a problem within the human water cycle. Students were first tasked with identifying the problem - it could be something as simple as quenching one’s thirst or swimming in a pool, or as complicated as how water is used to produce food, energy and even technology, among other things. Once a problem was identified, the students then evaluated current solutions that add value to society, developed an innovative solution, and

subsequently presented their project to the Judges. In addition, using a LEGO MINDSTORMS® kit, they designed and built a robot to solve missions on the competition tables. FIRST LEGO League introduces young people to the excitement of learning with its partner The LEGO Group. Students are encouraged to explore and pursue science, technology, engineering, and math (STEM) fields both within the FIRST program and in their future education and careers. Students presented their solutions during one of six different Qualifier tournaments that were held at Great Hollow Middle School and Mineola High School in late January and early February. Teams that competed at the Qualifiers worked to earn an opportunity to advance to the SBPLI FIRST LEGO League Championship at Longwood High School on Sunday, March 4th. The full list of 40 teams that earned the chance to compete in the Championship tournament are noted below. These teams will work to earn the chance to advance to the FIRST World Festival in Detroit on April 28th. “We had a great FIRST LEGO League season on

Long Island and we are looking forward to our final event at Longwood,” says Stephanie Stern, CoProgram Director and SBPLI/FIRST Long Island representative. “Every year, we are amazed at the skills that our students acquire from this program – be it teamwork and sportsmanship or science, technology, engineering and mathematics (STEM) education. The days are getting longer and the temperature is warming. This means that Daylight Savings Time will soon begin, and New Yorkers will set their clocks forward one hour on March 11th. The Firemen’s Association of the State of New York (FASNY) urges all New Yorkers to take this opportunity check their smoke and carbon monoxide alarms to ensure their homes are properly protected. If alarms have removeable batteries, those batteries should be replaced. Alarms equipped with sealed-in batteries should be tested to ensure they are in proper working condition. Alarms that are more than 10 years old should be replaced. At the end of 2015, Governor Andrew Cuomo signed a bill into law that will require all smoke alarms sold in New York State to be equipped with sealed-in, non-removable batteries that last for at least 10 years. The new law will take effect in 2019 and marks an important step in

improving New York’s fire safety. According to research from the National Fire Protection Association (NFPA), three of every five home fire deaths occur in homes without working smoke alarms, and the vast majority of smoke alarm failures are due to dead or missing batteries. Ten-year smoke alarms require little maintenance, and unlike alarms with removable batteries, they are nearly impossible to deactivate. Regardless of the type of alarm in one’s home, FASNY urges everybody to take some time and ensure their alarms are in proper working order. “Smoke alarms are the single most importance appliance found in every home,” said FASNY President Ken Pienkowski. “FASNY urges all New Yorkers to conduct routine, simple maintenance to ensure these lifesaving devices are in proper order. We strongly encourage New Yorkers to install 10-year smoke

alarms, which cannot be easily deactivated. Equally important is installing and maintaining carbon monoxide alarms, which are also critical in protecting life.” FASNY smoke & CO alarm tips: • Test alarms at least once a month by using the test button. • If you have an alarm with a removable battery, be sure to

check the batteries every six months, and change the batteries every year. If a battery is starting to lose its power, the unit will usually chirp to warn you. Do NOT disable the unit. • Vacuum or blow out any dust that might have accumulated in the unit. • NEVER borrow a battery from an alarm

Spring Into Safety to use somewhere else. • NEVER paint a smoke or CO alarm. • Install at least one smoke alarm on every ﬂoor of your home, including the basement, and in, or near each sleeping area. • Smoke alarms should not be installed near a window because drafts could interfere with their operation.

• Families should also develop and practice a home fire escape plan. • Always follow the manufacturer's instructions for testing smoke alarms and replacing the batteries. The Impact of Mandates and Optouts on our Teaching and Learning Communities,” at the State Administrator Association of New York State’s annual conference, held at the

Otesaga Conference Center in Cooperstown, New York. “It was a great opportunity to share and collaborate with colleagues from across New York State,” said Martin. The SAANYS workshop attendees journeyed through Islip Middle School’s mission to develop, maintain and improve the school’s climate and culture through the faculty and staff. Cameron

and Martin shared their experiences, research and implementation of an authentic and uniquely developed climate and culture survey that has been the driving force behind Islip’s professional growth as a community. “It is our hope that we empowered school leaders to develop surveys to assess and respond to the unique needs of their districts and buildings,” said Cameron.

Exciting Tech in East Islip Since school started in September, there has excitement in the air in East Islip’s schools revolving around the installation of Smart Boards in every classroom. This new technology was quickly embraced by teachers, who have utilized the boards in classroom instruction and lessons for everything from mathematics and literacy to music. “Our students are District Superintendent of Eastern Suffolk BOCES (ESBOCES) David Wicks was February’s guest speaker at the monthly Community Legislative Committee meeting. Wicks presented Advocacy 101 to a room of 50 attendees who included students, parents, ESBOCES staff, and members of the community interested in answers to questions such as ‘What is advocacy?’ ‘Who can advocate?’, and ‘How do we advocate?’

Robotics Team Succeeds Challenge tasks robotics teams with designing, building, programming and operating robots in an alliance format. At the Long Island FIRST Tech Challenge Qualifier held on January 8th at Lynbrook High School, the GPR team earned the Control, Inspire and Think Awards. The Inspire Award, an overall award, is given to teams who are ambassadors for FIRST programs, are positive and inclusive, and have a high quality and thorough engineering notebook. Following up

this performance, the GPR team won first place Alliance Captain and the Think Award at the Center Moriches qualifier on January 14th, earning them a spot in the Long Island Championship on February 11th. Erika Dannenfelser, Islip’s robotics adviser, said, “The Islip Girl Powered Robotics team, in just its second year, has demonstrated the FIRST Challenge values of hard work, innovation and sharing ideas.”

In a true group effort, more than 70 East Islip Middle School students worked seamlessly to present a successful production of “The Little Mermaid” as this year’s school musical. Three magical performances were held in the school’s auditorium on February 9th, 10th and 11th. “The Little Mermaid” starred sixth-grader Hanna Ross in the leading role of Ariel, eighth-grader Trevor Cox as Prince Eric, seventh-grader Tristan Hearth as Sebastian, sixthgrader Leah Dolson as Flounder, eighth-grader

Emily Blair as Scuttle, eighth-grader Tim Hogan as King Triton and eighthgrader Allison Lichter as Ursula. Additional cast members included Angelina DeAmicis as Flotsam, Kristy Murphy as Jetsam, Isabelle IrizarryMcAdam as Aquata, Sydney Holmes as Andrina, Brooke Lubin as Arista, Sophia LoMonaco as Atina, Samantha Federico as Adella, Kelly Waldron as Allana, James Mendolia as Grimsby, Tim McCall as the Pilot, Alexandra Totillo as Carlotta and Andrew D’Amico as the Chef. The cast rehearsed

together for 80 hours in addition to the time they spent practicing lines, songs and dances at home, while the crew put in remarkable effort in mastering lights, sound, props and makeup. Set and costume design were handled by the musical’s assistant director, Jean Marie D’Aversa, with help from Diane Doyle. “The passion and dedication of our students, along with many hours of rehearsal, paid off to make this show a success,” said director Alyssa Tripi. “We are very proud of every student involved.”

Response to Intervention

At Islip’s Commack Road Elementary School, the teaching and learning community has developed a new Response to Intervention Committee to help determine if students are responding to classroom instruction and progressing as expected. Currently the RTI Committee is represented by 15 faculty members from Commack Road and the district, including at least one teacher per grade level, a reading teacher, an English as a new language teacher, the building psychologist, a social worker, representatives from pupil

personnel services and the office of curriculum and instruction, and the building principal. Commack Road’s RTI Committee has met biweekly since September to discuss, problem solve and develop plans for classroom and tiered intervention of student instruction. Inspired by the work, research and publications of Jim Wright, the team attended Wright’s series of workshops at Eastern Suffolk BOCES this year. “Jim Wright says that RTI is about teamwork and collaboration,” said fourth-grade teacher and

Commack Road parent Cathy Nieves. “I am incredibly proud of the work and efforts that team members are putting in and appreciative that they are giving of their own time to a worthwhile cause.” “The development of a multitiered student support system that we are undertaking will be a threeto-five-year project that will build on the already great things happening at CRES while improving the teaching and learning of all students of all abilities,” said Principal James Cameron.

Police Smart Presentation Two of Islip’s elementary schools – Commack Road and Maud S. Sherwood – recently collaborated to provide local families with a Police Smart seminar on digital citizenship. Organized by Commack Road Principal James Cameron and Sherwood Principal Chad Walerstein, in cooperation with the Suffolk County Police Department, more than 120 students and parents participated in an informative evening about electronic usage as well as Internet and gaming safety. The evening was supported by Parent

Teacher Associations from both schools, which donated Kindle Fire HD tablets that were rafﬂed off to one lucky student from each building. During the session, Community Relations Bureau officer Sabrina Pitch provided helpful tips and proactive strategies to keep students safe in the digital world. Pitch shared information on apps that allow predators to gain access to children. “Every parent should attend a presentation like this one,” said Sherwood PTA member Christine Breslin. “It was so

informative and truly eyeopening. It’s such a scary world for our children and presentations like this help us stay in the know and keep our children safe.” “This presentation helped reinforce to children that the rules we have in the house are not scare tactics or mean, they are only to keep them safe,” said Commack Road PTA member Hope Keeney-Bowe. “Thank you to Mr. Cameron, Mr. Walerstein and Officer Pitch for opening the door for an honest conversation to take place with our children.”

Congratulations to the winning teams of the Great Chili Cook-off held at the Islip Career Center. The Islip Career Center is an Eastern Suffolk BOCES school that provides special career education services to students with special needs. The assignment for students in this Introduction to Cooking Program required them to perform numerous tasks designed to teach life and employment skills,

both of which promote independence. Those exercises included sourcing a chili recipe online, developing a recipe theme with corresponding table signage and décor, adhering to a budget, following all recipe instructions, preparing the chili and any side dishes or condiments, and being able to answer judges’ questions. All recipes were assessed by a panel of school staff members and points were awarded based

on various criteria, such as taste and presentation. Said Chef Michael Frankson, Introduction to Cooking teacher, “Completing this contest is a great activity for my students. The many facets bolster their confidence while teaching indispensable life skills, as well as proficiency for possible entry-level employment in the food service industry.”

Artist Recognized Town Supervisor Angie Carpenter and members of the Islip Town Board, joined in celebration of Edward Stephenson Bates, a WWII U.S. Navy Veteran and nationally acclaimed artist. Born in 1915, Mr. Bates began his career as an artist at the young age of 15, winning the Bamburger Award from the State of Pennsylvania

and a Scholastic Award, for his rendition of the Atlantic City Seascape. After serving in the Navy in WWII, he moved to New York in 1955 and became an illustrator of women’s wear. His vivid oil-paintings are renowned for capturing the heart and essence of African American culture, and have been displayed in prestigious art shows,

museums, colleges, libraries, municipalities and banks throughout Long Island, the Tri-State Area and other parts of the United States. Throughout the month of February, the masterful work of Ed Bates has been on display in the hallways of Islip Town Hall outside of the Town Board room.

Art League Exhibition East Islip High School seniors Melissa Mavrich, Jordan Rant, Zoe Stengel and Jenna Tergesen have been featured in the Art League of Long Island’s 11th annual Go APE Advanced Placement Student Exhibition. The exhibit runs from February 17th through March 4th at the Art League’s Jeanie Tengelsen Gallery in Dix Hills, celebrating the exceptional talents of Long Island’s young AP art students, as selected by their teachers. These East Islip students are enrolled in Daniel

Figliozzi’s AP art 2-D design course; they will attend a Go APE closing artists’ reception at the gallery on March 4. All four seniors plan to attend art school in the fall and are in the process of applying and committing to schools. “These four girls are amazing,” said Figliozzi. “This is my fourth year teaching all of them, and they have shown amazing growth and transformation in their art practices. I was more than happy to select them for this exhibition, as it is a wonderful opportunity for them to

share their work with a larger audience.” “I’m honored to be a part of such a prestigious event and couldn’t wait to see artists’ works from other schools,” said Stengel. She has taken nearly every art course that East Islip High School has to offer and received a 5 on her AP drawing exam last year. Stengel plans to pursue a career in illustration, and was awarded with the highest merit scholarship to attend the School of Visual Arts in Manhattan next fall. “I can’t believe I was

given this amazing ART-pportunity,” said Rant. “My artwork, ‘Peacocking,’ is based on personal experience and my interactions with the people I surround myself with.” A skilled drawer and cartoonist with a knack for humor, Rant is likewise considering SVA, but plans to pursue cartooning. She has also been accepted to Columbia College in Manhattan and Savannah College of Art and Design in Georgia, and is in the process of making a decision for her college

career. “Being selected for the Go APE show was unexpected,” said Mavrich, acclaimed for her ability to create photorealistic portraits. “I feel accomplished. My artwork, ‘Emma & Jenny,’ showcases my best friend and my cousin. I captured the calmness of Emma and the energetic nature and excitement of Jenny in the work.” Mavrich has also applied to SVA and plans to attend the fine arts program there. “I was excited to be able

to showcase my work after four years of hard work in my art classes,” said Tergesen of Go APE. “My progression over the years has lead to an artwork that I’m really proud of. I feel accomplished that am able to show this piece alongside other AP art students on Long Island.” Tergesen plans to pursue interior design next year and hopes to attend the New York School of Interior Design this fall.

Signing On East Islip High School senior Lyndsie Brunner recently signed a national letter of intent on Feb. 14 to play soccer this fall for the New York Institute of Technology in Old Westbury. She cited her prior training experience with NYIT Assistant Coach Karim Diallo as a factor in her choice. Brunner, a starter on the Lady Redmen varsity team since her sophomore year, was named team captain as a senior and earned All-League status for 2017-2018. “I’d like to say that our engagement story was picture-perfect but, the truth is our engagement was as real life as it gets. Kurt was coming over and, on his way in, he gave me a package from “outside” that he said must had been delivered. I didn’t think too much of it; I figured it was something I had ordered for Christmas. I opened it up and there was a box of Lucky Charms with a very legitimate looking letterhead. It said that I was a winner of their “Marshmallows Only” contest, which I had entered religiously over past few months since their promotion started. I was so excited that I put down the letter before I finished reading it, and took out two bowls for him and I to enjoy. A few minutes passed and he asked me if I read the letter and I answered him “yes” - but the truth is I didn’t. I was too involved in my marshmallow winnings to be concerned about the invoice. He picked it up and said to me that I won a prize. I answered him, “Of course I won a prize, we are eating it! Marshmallows are the best prize ever!” I took the letter from him and finished reading it. It said “Congratulations Ms. Titcomb! Please take the prize at the bottom of the box as a token of our appreciation!” I reached in the box and pulled out a little blue velvet box, and when I turned around, he was down on one knee and asked me for my hand in marriage. I was so surprised I wanted to scream with joy, but I still had a mouthful of marshmallows and started to choke a little bit. He asked me if I was okay and to please not throw up on him. I was finally able to stop coughing and he looked up at me - still down on one knee because I had forgotten to answer him! I finally realized and said, “Yes, 100 million times, YES!” He got up and we kissed and I was crying tears of pure joy! I realized he had painstakingly hand-picked out hundreds of marshmallows over weeks and weeks to give me the absolute sweetest, thoughtful engagement I could have ever imagined. It may not have been picture-perfect for everyone, but it couldn’t have been more perfect for us. Sometimes things don’t always go exactly as planned, but with a little bit of luck and a heart filled with love, memories like this will surely be cherished forever!”
