normal home and working lives within two to six weeks. • The number of living organ donors is more than 6,000 per year - and one in four of these donors isn’t biologically related to the recipient. • A kidney from a living donor usually functions immediately, making it easier to monitor. Some deceased donor kidneys do not function immediately, and as a result, the patient may require dialysis until the kidney starts to function. • Nearly 100,000 people are currently waiting for a kidney. • 4,903 people died in 2012 waiting for a kidney. • 3,000 people are added to the waiting list for a kidney each month. • Depending on where you live, the wait for a deceased kidney can be anywhere from 3 to 10 YEARS!!! Matthew Botchler is

34 years old and is going through Stage 4 kidney failure. He is in dire need of a transplant. Since his blood type is O+, he is considered a universal donor, and unfortunately not a universal recipient. Potential donors must be blood type O+/ O-, generally healthy (DOES NOT smoke, drink excessively, DOES NOT have diabetes, or cardiac issues, and has two healthy kidneys) and must be between the ages of 18 to 40. On August 7th, 2013, Matthew heard the four most devastating words of his life: “Your kidneys are failing.” On December 26th, 2013, Matthew received a phone call from the Kidney Transplant team stating that he had been placed on the “Status 7” transplant list. This is only a small step in his long journey, as the “Status 7” list means that he must find his own living kidney donor.

Malinowitzer, East Islip’s director of careers and student services. “I knew that my dream was to pursue an education in nursing,” she said. “But I was unsure of the next step to take in order to make my dream come true.” Malinowitzer recognized her problem and immediately suggested a solution, making her

Still, she did not feel completely fulfilled. “I loved working with and helping children, but I couldn’t help wanting more,” she said. After spending many hours talking with doctors and physician assistants about their schooling and career paths, she realized that what she truly wanted was not only to care for others in their time of need, but to diagnose and treat them as well. “Arriving at this conclusion was quite empowering yet frightening at the same time,” she said. “I finally knew what I wanted in life, but I knew the road ahead was not going to be easy. After a few weeks of deep thought, consideration and changing my mind

multiple times, I decided to go for it.” Researching physician assistant programs from all across the country led her back home to apply to the nearby Touro College School of Health Sciences in Bay Shore. She was accepted into Touro in 2009, successfully navigating two years of intense undergraduate studies in order to gain the credits necessary for applying to the school’s physician assistant program. “I was accepted into the 2011 physician assistant class and the next two years of my life were a blur,” she said. “The amount of time and sacrifice needed to complete a program of that standard is unimaginable, and at times I felt like giving up. It was at those challenging times that I could hear Mr. Malinowitzer’s voice in my head, telling me, ‘I expect you to do more with this,

Tiffany.’ Knowing that my family, friends and fiance had faith in me, and that with every day I was getting closer to my dream, I persevered, never looked back and never gave up.” Gruber graduated with high honors from Touro in September 2013, earning a bachelor’s degree in physician assistant studies. She was honored for both academic and clinical achievement, and was inducted into the Pi Alfa National Honors Society for Physician Assistants. After graduation, Gruber returned once more to East Islip to visit her old mentor. “It had been seven years since I had last seen Mr. Malinowitzer, yet it had only felt like yesterday,” she said. “When I told him all that I had accomplished, I could see such pride in his eyes, although there was no

For successful physician assistant Tiffany Gruber, an alumna of East Islip High School’s Class of 2005, the remarkable journey to her career destination began with a visit to the school’s guidance office. During her senior year, with graduation approaching and in search of direction, Gruber approached Israel

aware of the school’s affiliation with the BOCES Eastern Suffolk School of Practical Nursing Program and setting up an interview for her. “He not only solved my problem, but helped me take the first few steps of an amazing journey that lay ahead,” said Gruber. She was accepted into the BOCES Accelerated LPN Program and graduated in just a year. “I couldn’t believe that only one year earlier I had been in high school, unsure of what move to make next, and all of a sudden I was a licensed practical nurse, ready to start in the workforce,” she said. Soon after graduating from BOCES, Gruber visited her mentor Malinowitzer’s guidance office in East Islip. “The news was received with such pride and joy,” she recalled. “Yet at the end of our conversation, he said to me, ‘I expect you to do

look of surprise. It was as if he had expected me to come back with the type of news that I had just delivered. Masters Of Multiplying

On a recent Friday afternoon, Gardiner Manor School 4th graders, along with students from Mr. Lorenz’s class, participated in a Multiplication Bee. The competition, organized by 4th grade teachers Mrs. Curtis and Mr. Dooley, was designed to encourage students to memorize their multiplication facts in a fun and exciting way. Two classes competed against each other at a time.

Mrs. Manzo, the 4th grade Dual Language teacher, rolled a pair of virtual 12-sided dice then projected onto a Smartboard. One student from each class read the numbers as quickly as possible and shouted out their answer; the first one to respond correctly earned a point for their class. Mrs. Nieto’s, Mr. Dooley’s and Mrs. Ridolfi’s/Mrs. McCracken’s classes earned

Love Of Reading Learning to read is the single most important component of a child’s education. Studies show that children who read at home are better prepared to succeed in school. Parents/People As Reading Partners (PARP) is a program that cements the necessary bond between home and school in order to encourage a love of reading in our students. PARP is a statewide PTA-

administered program that asks parents and/or caregivers to read with their children for at least fifteen minutes daily, recognizing that reading can be fun as well as informative. The daily activity of reading together strengthens a child’s reading and communication skills as well as the parent/child relationship. PARP has

been alive and well at Mary G. Clarkson School for many years and 2014’s program runs from January 20th to February 14th. During each of these four weeks, students will read at home with their families, fill out a coupon and return it to school to show their participation: one “coupon” for each week of family reading. Students will receive weekly prize incentives.

Pillows For Patients As Valentine’s Day approached, students in Carol Wilson’s fifthgrade class at Timber Point Elementary School embarked on a Pillows for Patients project in conjunction with the school’s February character education trait of kindness. Waving Goodbye To Winter

As we wave goodbye to winter, it is easy to forget that there are people out there without a home, food or even shoes. The homeless are at an exponential disadvantage when it comes to adverse weather. We often complain about the trials of winter, but do we really have it so bad? Just having a house to go back to at the end of the day is an asset that we all take for granted. Many people don’t have heat. There is no relief at the end of an afternoon commute. Sure, they have no driveway to shovel, but they also

end up sleeping on the streets in the middle of a snowstorm. A few weeks ago, I took part in a Midnight Run. We went to the city and gave out bags of clothes to those who needed them the most. They were eternally grateful for our contributions. One man even tried to give us a thank you gift. Despite the fact that they have so little, the homeless people that we met proved to be some of the most generous. Even though some people regard them as “bums,” the homeless are fighting an uphill battle each and every

day. If one thinks living on minimum wage is tough, try surviving on change. Although I have no firsthand experience in the realm of the homeless, I can imagine just how hard it may be. People can be intolerant of the homeless. They wave them away when all they ask for is change. There is no daily salvation for this group of people that are trying so dearly just to make it. Before you curse the weather while waiting for your car to heat up, remember the men and women who are sleeping in the snow.

Maud S. Sherwood Elementary School students in the Islip School District are jumping their way to good health. Throughout the week of February 10th, students in second through fifth grade participated in the American Heart Association’s Jump Rope for Heart program during

their physical education classes. They learned about the importance of heart health, keeping active and staying fit and eating wellbalanced meals. “Jump Rope for Heart is a schoolwide fundraiser, where our students are donating money to help fund research and raising awareness for people

On Thursday, February 6th, Bay Shore High School hosted students from five surrounding school districts as part of the Ambassador Program created by the Town of Islip’s Anti-Bias Task Force. This Task Force, under the leadership of Rabbi Steven Moss and vice-chair Mary Louise Cohen, has organized the Ambassador Program to educate local

high school students about bias and what they can do to educate their peers. This year, the program expanded to four sessions; the first three were held at Islip Town Hall, Central Islip High School and Bay Shore High School, respectively, while the culminating session will be held at Islip Town Hall where the students will be sworn in as Ambassadors

of Anti-Bias in April by the Town Supervisor. The Ambassador Program has been running for a number of years, with seven schools participating in 2013-2014 alone. Defining bias crimes and talking about ways to address them in our own communities in a safe and supportive environment is the goal of the Ambassador Program.
