ourth-grade students at Islip’s Commack Road Elementary School recently held a biographical puppet show as part of their curriculum studies in nonfiction reading. Each student chose a person he or she was interested in, read a book on that person and then completed a biography book report. In the culminating activity, fourthgraders constructed puppets out of craft materials and wrote first-person oral reports and presented them.

Giving Kids A Smile

Sponsored by the Suffolk County Dental Society (SCDS), the Give Kids a Smile event held at the Long Island Aquarium in Riverhead brought awareness and education about the importance of good dental health to families with small children. SCDS Executive Director Dr. Paul Markowitz said, “Students from SUNY Stony Brook School of Dental Medicine, SUNY Farmingdale Hygiene Program, Academy at Bixhorn Technical Center Dental Assisting Program, and residents from St. Charles Hospital volunteered their time to provide oral care and hygiene instruction.

Dentists and specialists from all over Suffolk County donated their time and expertise to service the pediatric community. We examined over 250 patients.” Dental Assisting Teacher Carol Donohue said, “My students got the experience of working with and learning from the college students and interacting with the community.” Tamara Chery, a dental assisting student from Patchogue Medford UFSD, said she volunteered because, “It’s just a good thing to do.” She always wanted to do something with teeth. “I know that sounds funny but I was inspired by my general dentist.”

Applications for the 9th annual Polish American Museum Founders Scholarship are now available. The $500 Scholarship is offered to high school students of Polish heritage residing in Nassau or Suffolk County, and a citizen of the United States. The student must be entering college in the Fall 2015. The Scholarship was established on the

Gardiner Manor School celebrated Black History month by inviting several African-Americans who are recognized in their careers to speak to students on a recent Thursday afternoon. The invited guests came from of wide variety of professions. Some came from law-enforcement. Others are prominent in the fields of education, journalism, the arts and business. Some of the speakers were social workers. Others were community activists, musicians, artists or members of the clergy. All of these dedicated professionals gave the gift of their experience and expertise to the students

of Gardiner Manor School. They took time out of their busy schedules to speak to students about possible careers for the future. In fact, the theme of the program was “You can be anything you want to be!” The aim of the speakers was to encourage each and every child to identify a goal and to do what needs to be done to make it happen. Gardiner Manor even played host to some of the Tuskegee Airmen, the legendary squadron of African-American pilots who overcame the prejudice of that time to become the first black fighter pilots in the history of United States Armed Forces. These brave men fought through

pervasive bigotry that kept Blacks out of all but the most menial of positions. Former Tuskegee airman Dabney Montgomery shared with students a 1918 document that stated, “… the black brain was not capable of learning how to fly a plane.” Undaunted in the face of such blatant racism, Mr. Montgomery, along with fellow guest speakers Paul Berger, Richard Braithwaite, Wilfred DeFour and Audley Coulthurst, flew numerous dangerous missions over Nazi Germany and helped bring our country to victory. Gardiner Manor students were also delighted to meet and greet Ms. Ilyasah Shabazz, who donated her

African-American History time to discuss her latest book, Malcolm Little: The Boy Who Grew Up To Become Malcolm X, written about the childhood of her famous father. The students were excited to speak to Ken Grimbal, whom many recognized from his work as a reporter for Channel 12 News. The students were excited and appreciative. It was clear that they understood the message of inclusion; that all students had the capacity to do great things. The students left the program empowered to dream of their own futures, when they too, might be called upon to share their knowledge and experience with a younger generation.

Honored For Excellence Two Suffolk County Community College adjunct professors are recipients of Chancellor’s Awards for Excellence in Adjunct Teaching for Academic Year 2014-2015. The award recognizes consistently superior teaching at the graduate, undergraduate, or

professional level. Suffolk’s Kelliann Schrage Flores, assistant professor of Foreign Language, Humanities and Women Studies and Krystyna Janicka-Wlodek, assistant professor of Mathematics were among 48 award recipients from 30 colleges and

universities state-wide it was announced by SUNY Chancellor Nancy L. Zimpher. “The Chancellor’s Award confirms what we have known all along,” said Suffolk County Community College President Dr. Shaun L. McKay. “This

recognition is a systemwide acknowledgment of the contributions and dedication to high quality education by our adjunct teaching faculty.” Chancellor’s Awards are presented annually in seven categories: Faculty

Confucius said, “The man who moves a mountain begins by carrying away small stones.” Such is the principle of proactivity based upon, of taking small steps to advance great lengths, ultimately. The key, of course, it to begin the process. Complacency is man’s worst enemy; however, settling into such a mindset is perhaps one of the simplest tasks to accomplish. Never mind that “To Do” list – it will be there tomorrow. And the next day. And the day after that. This is closely followed by its evil bedfellow, entitlement; that sense that you somehow deserve more than you have without feeling the need to prove it, or earn it, as the case

may be. Together, these flaws can lead once promising, motivated individuals down a path of bitterness, resentment and arrogance – not a flattering combination. The problem is, you don’t see it happening. You exist day to day, you settle into your routines, and then…well, then you just settle. Plain and simple. Ambition flies out the window, and with it, that drive that propelled you forward for so many years falls flat. As easy as it is to fall prey to this downward spiral, it takes a concerted effort to right the ship and get back on course. This is where the “small stones” come into play. Even something as simple as making lists, outlines of what needs to be done in a

particular time frame, can help. Sometimes, the simple act of checking an item off can make all the difference in turning a gloomy outlook into one of positivity. One item. One stone. One day at a time. And repeat, for as long as it takes to accomplish whatever it is your goal may be, whether something as simple as saving money for a particular item; or perhaps a far loftier ambition to go out and change the world. Whatever it is, however complex, all can be achieved using the same basic steps. So begin. And maintain. And, before you know it, this newfound motivation will become the stuff of habit – the good kind… the kind that leads to a fulfilling and successful life.

Bullying is defined as “an overbearing person who habitually badgers and intimidates smaller or weaker people,” according to http:// dictionar y.reference.com/ browse/bullying?s=t. Being a student in seventh grade and a victim of bullying, my definition for bullying is when somebody thinks you are weak, “odd” or strange and makes fun of you for being who you are simply because you are different than them. Bullying is a very serious subject. Many cases of bullying happen each day, and kids do not tell an adult so they can get help putting an end to it. I made this mistake. I did not initially tell an adult, and this lack of action only made it worse for me. If you are getting bullied, you need to tell somebody or

you could eventually become self-conscious and doubt yourself. You could lose selfesteem and believe that you are what the bully says you are and isolate yourself from your friends. You think to yourself when your friends invite you to hang out, “They are only going to turn their backs on me too. I should just stay away from them from now on so they do not bully me.” Your friends may sometimes be the only people to help in these situations. When I was bullied, it was for three years! One in ten people get bullied every day. If you notice somebody being bullied, you need to stand up for them and tell the bully, “Stop it! Leave them alone.” If you are continuing to see somebody being bullied, you need to get an adult

immediately. Sometimes you may think that people are just joking around, but their intentions are to just make fun of you without you actually realizing what they are doing to you. Bullying does not have to be just verbal; it can also be cyber bullying and also physical bullying. In my case, I was verbally bullied. The words hurt dreadfully, but one way of handling it was by talking to my family. This was my way of getting the point that I was being bullied out, and I was able to also communicate my feelings when I talked about my situation. My family guided me in techniques to handle the situation and how to put an end to the bullying. Bullying is a serious subject.

A record breaking, crowd of over 1000 Long Islanders attended the 14th Annual Long Island Go Red For Women Luncheon on Wednesday, February 11th. The sea of red could be seen throughout all the rooms at the Crest Hollow Country Club in Woodbury. This year’s honorees included Howard Stein, Senior Managing Partner of the Real Estate Practice Group, Certilman Balin Adler & Hyman, LLP and Deborah K. Richman, President and CEO DKUSA, Ltd. and Community Honoree, Premier Cardiology. Those in attendance also heard from 14 year-old heart survivor Gianna Schupler, a competitive dancer. Gianna shared her open heart surgery experience and how she recovered to go on to win a national dance competition. Gianna was an inspiration to everyone in the crowd. “Being a part of this event from start to finish was an amazing experience” said Teresa Evans, Executive Director, Human Resources, CHL Mortgage a division of Freedom Mortgage who chaired this years’ event. In a unique twist on the social studies curriculum, third-grade students at East Islip’s Ruth C. Kinney Elementary School presented a “wax museum,” dressed in costume as important figures from history. After selecting and researching a particular historical figure, students prepared poster boards that highlighted the accomplishments and contributions their chosen figures made to society, and constructed timelines to highlight the

significant events of their historical personages’ lives. Presenting to their classmates, each thirdgrader dressed and spoke as if they were their chosen figure, fielding questions from their peers. As a culminating activity, the RCK library was transformed into an interactive wax museum. Parents were invited to tour the museum, where they had the opportunity to push a “button” in front of each student portraying a historical figure. When the button

was pushed, the historical figure came to life and told about his or her life and major accomplishments. Upon completion of their speeches, they reverted back to wax figures until the next visitor pressed their buttons. “This was our first year doing this,” said teacher Jennifer Beebe. “The parents really enjoyed the opportunity to come in and see the students’ hard work, and the students loved seeing each other dressed in costume and learning from their peers.”

Rising To The Challenge The dedicated young actors of East Islip Middle School brought down the house on February 6th7th during two nights of sold-out performances of the school musical, “Once On This Island” that were filled with family, friends and community members. The one-act 1990 Broadway musical, written by Lynn Ahrens and Stephen Flaherty and based on Rosa Guy’s 1985 novel “My Love, My Love; or, The Peasant Girl,” is

set on a Caribbean island. The story questions why humans have prejudiced thoughts. Nearly the entire show is sung or features spoken dialogue specifically timed to the musical score. “With almost nonstop music, the cast members did a fantastic job with the challenging musical content of this show,” said Musical Director John Patrick Murphy. “The ensemble cast members were also on stage for the

entire show, which is a challenge for any actor to stay focused and in character for that length of time.” The production showcased the talents of more than 80 students involved in every theatrical position from acting to ushering. “All of the students collaborated and became a theatrical family over the past months with one goal in mind – to tell the story,” Murphy added.

Fourth-grade students at Islip’s Commack Road Elementary School recently held a biographical puppet show as part of their curriculum studies in nonfiction reading. Each student chose a person he or she was interested in, read a book on that person and then

completed a biography book report on the person. In the culminating activity, fourth-graders constructed puppets out of craft materials and wrote first-person oral reports, presented at a special show attended by parents. “This was an opportunity for children to learn about

a famous person and then practice public speaking without having to be the face and stand in front of an audience,” said teacher Joan Munson. “All the children in the class enjoyed presenting with their puppets.”

Camp Pa-Qua-Tuck is hosting five open house sessions for prospective campers and families of children and young adults with special needs in March, April and May. During the tour, parents will have a chance to meet the staff — the camp’s director, nurse and office manager — and ask questions or address any concerns that they might have. They will have the opportunity to view the entire camp and explore the different areas dedicated

SHARPSHOOTERS - On February 21st, the Department of Parks, Recreation & Cultural Affairs, along with its co-sponsors, Southside Hospital - a member of the North Shore LIJ-Health System - the Islip Elks, & the Town of Islip Housing Authority, held its 28th Annual “Just Say NO” Sharp Shooter Basketball Contest. The “Just Say NO” Sharp Shooter Basketball Contest has been held in the spirit of friendly competition, highlighting what people can accomplish when they say “NO” to the detrimental effects of drugs and alcohol. This year, over 8,000 fourth and fifth grade boys & girls participated in the contest, which is held in conjunction with the elementary schools in the Town of Islip.
