Getting Inspired Through its Inventing Self series of guest lectures, Islip’s EXCEL program for the academically gifted provides an inspiring ongoing personal look at how successful individuals are living fulfilling, meaningful lives. The first visitor this school year was teenager Ben Yao, a representative from Kids Change the World, a global youth-led nonprofit organization that envisions a world in which young people work to combat societal issues to ensure all are blessed with the opportunities that allow them to lead productive and fulfilling lives. At age 11, Yao was EXCEL’s youngest Inventing Self guest. Even before middle school, he was already very active in community service projects both inside and outside of school, and has been involved with many Kids Change the World activities, including the Smile Train ReadA-Thon, Cards for Kids program, collecting books and school supplies for children, and UNICEF Trick or Treat. Yao was joined for the EXCEL presentation by his sister Amanda, speaking on how everyone can do his or her part to give back to an audience that ranged from fifth-graders through

high schoolers. After the lecture, the EXCEL students began work on making cards for the Cards for Kids Program. Most recently, science explorer and inventor Scott Bronson from Brookhaven National Laboratory visited as Inventing Self speaker, providing the EXCEL students with hands-on experience regarding genetics, virus inhibitors, fly fishing casting and the world of sledding with Alaskan malamutes. Bronson, the manager for BNL’s K-12 programs, holds 11 copyrights for science education kits he developed with Brookhaven scientists, for which he was named Brookhaven National Laboratory’s Inventor of the Year. He also oversees the lab’s Elementary School Science Fair and Maglev and Bridge contests. Prior to joining BNL, he worked at the Watson School of Biological Sciences at Cold Spring Harbor Laboratory and appeared on PBS show “Scientific American Frontiers.” According to EXCEL coordinator Julia Johnson, “Inventing Self was created with the objective of helping students address perhaps the most important question life has to offer: How do you create the person you

wish to become? In other words, how does one ‘invent’ oneself? This query goes beyond the topic of what career you wish to pursue, and delves into deeper questions of what life means to you, what morals, ethics and values guide your decisions and

how you navigate life’s path. Inventing Self guests come from an eclectic range of backgrounds, yet they are all successful in that they are living a life that is true to themselves.”

Are We There Yet? I’m fairly good with directions. For someone who, as a passenger, is rather oblivious to her surroundings, once in the driver’s seat, I can generally navigate with little trouble. Of course, in this day and age, there is always the added benefit of GPS to fall back on. And by benefit, I mean often maddening source of frustration and bewilderment. Case in point: my friend and I have, over the last several years, attended several of the laser light shows at the Vanderbilt Planetarium. Of course, there are several possible routes to take, but all roads ultimately lead to one winding, somewhat meandering path through the

hilly terrain of Centerport. As these shows are generally in the evening, I always plug the address into the phone’s map so as to be sure I don’t miss a turn en route. Of the approximately half a dozen times we have headed this way, I can honestly say we have never managed to travel the same way twice. Never. Not once. Just last week, as if to prove the point, my phone’s darling virtual assistant proceeded to take us on a grand tour of the residential area surrounding the planetarium, complete with dozens of unnecessary turns (followed by U-turn’s and “rerouting”), forks in the road (continue heading straight, she said) and even a pass over a small body of water (do you remember there

being a bridge here before?). And on the return trip, there was more of the same – except, not quite the same, as we detoured through an entirely different neighborhood. How is this possible?? At a certain point, it became more a source of amusement, a fun guessing game as to which way she might send us next. Amazingly, our time of arrival only fluctuated by a minute or so, in spite of the fact that our route never came close to matching the virtually straight line that had appeared on the map. It was a bizarre journey, to be sure – and will continue to be, should we venture that way again. That, at least, seems to be a guarantee.

Stop the Bleed

Thanks in part to the efforts of Brentwood High School Physical Education Teacher, Mrs. Susan Goumba, BHS students were joined with representatives from Northwell Health Trauma Institute and Cohen Children’s Medical Center for the launch of an interactive simulation called “Stop the Bleed.” The campaign which was launched at the White House, following the Sandy Hook Elementary School shooting, was created as an initiative to empower students as well as the general public with the knowledge and

resources to stop or slow life-threatening injuries in an emergency. According to the Department of Homeland Security, “No matter how rapid the arrival of professional emergency responders, bystanders will always be first on the scene.” The event taught students basic life-saving medical interventions, including CPR, tourniquet application, and bleeding control with gauze packs and topical hemostatic agents. “Our school is taking a proactive step towards ensuring that our students receive the tools necessary

to the save lives in the event of an emergency in school buildings, at home or where ever they may be in the world,” said Principal Callan. The event will teach basic life-saving medical interventions, including CPR, tourniquet application, and bleeding control with gauze packs or topical hemostatic agents. Given the recent tragedy that has occurred within the Brentwood community at the beginning of the school year, the event will provide information to aide students in an unlikely event that would require them to save a life.

The Great South Bay Power Squadron of the United States Power Squadrons has installed its officers for 2017-2018. The Change of Watch meeting was on Friday, February 17th at the Rusy-Bohm Post 411 American Legion, Islip, New York. Arthur K. Wallach, AP, of Commack, NY has been installed as Squadron Commander. Installed to serve with Commander Wallach is John Pergola, AP, of Patchogue, who is Executive Officer; James M. Milton, JN, of Islip Terrace as Squadron Educational Officer; James F. Milton, AP, of Islip Terrace as Secretary; and Steve Potestio, P, of Holbrook as Treasurer. Commander Wallach is a Squadron Advanced Pilot of the United States Power Squadrons and served as the Executive Officer over this last year. His previous Squadron responsibilities include being the Administrative Office in 2015. Arthur has received the following educational advancements and awards in the Squadron: achieved the grade of Pilot and Seamanship in 2011, friends and family, and the Basic Boating developed, planned, and Course in 1998. York State Assemblyman Andrew Garbarino, Suffolk County Proceeding Officer Dwayne Gregory, the Town of Islip and Supervisor Angie Carpenter, Town of Brookhaven Supervisor Ed Romaine, Nassau County Executive Edward Mangano, Deborah Henley, and from President Jimmy Carter from The Carter Center. Organized in 1914, the United States Power Squadrons is the world’s large private boating organization. The national organization is comprised of over 40,000 members in over 450 local Squadrons across the country. The United States Power Squadrons is a non-profit organization of boating enthusiasts who have a common interest and appreciation of recreational boating, boating safety, and education. Going Red To support women’s heart health, staff at East Islip’s Connetquot Elementary School were clad in crimson on February 3rd in honor of National Wear Red Day.

The event, which began in 2003 as a joint effort by the American Heart Association and the National Heart, Lung and Blood Institute, is held annually on the first

School librarian Gina Seymour runs a unique MakerCare program at Islip High School dedicated to nurturing philanthropic qualities while benefiting both local and global organizations. Collaborating with service-based clubs in the school and cultivating partnerships with outside agencies, the students carry out hands-on service projects, taking an active role in making a difference in their community and the world. Participants in the program, now in its third year, include those who need service hours or who want to make a difference; and members of clubs such as Interact, SADD, Maker Club; Heidi Stevens’ sewing class; as well as Commack Road Elementary School students involved through their library program. “Maker activities for children foster valuable

learning opportunities,” said Seymour. “In our school makerspaces, students learn about science, technology, engineering and even artistic expression. This seems like a lot, and yet there’s even more that students can learn in a makerspace – namely, compassion and empathy. Maker education need not be limited to STEM or STEAM but can embrace the whole child. As a make and donate program, MakerCare fosters civic engagement among our students.” This year, the MakerCare program has encompassed a wide variety of projects. Earlier in the school year, students made dog toys for the Town of Islip Animal Shelter using tennis balls recycled from the high school tennis team and fabric rope made from recycled T-shirts. “Dogs are often bored being kenneled all day, and

joy can be brought to them by creating these simple toys,” said Seymour. “All of the necessary supplies were derived from recycled materials as we emphasize environmental sustainability as well as helping others. “ Students in Stevens’ sewing class learned how to sew a basic straight stitch by making catnip toys for the animal shelter. The class also sewed dresses for African schools through the Little Dresses for Africa program. In other projects, Habitat for Humanity Club adviser Sue Riche and art teacher Lorraine Knoblauch were in the makerspace with students, working on decorative wood plaques to be donated to Habitat for Humanity, while Islip’s KIC Club helped make skeins of “plarn”’ – yarn made from plastic bags – to be crocheted into sleep mats for the homeless.
